SUNDOGS & INVERSIONS & FATA MORGANA, oh my!

Natural phenomena in the Big Sky are far more mysterious and interesting than rainbows and rainclouds SUNDOGS

A

lso known as mock suns, this atmospheric phenomenon typically appears as two bright spots of light to the left and right of the sun. Often, a luminous ring connects the pair of mock suns. Produced by light interacting with suspended ice crystals, sundogs are classified as halos. When the crystals float downward and turn their hexagonal faces toward the ground, they bend light rays to each side of the (real) sun.

Sundogs have confused our best thinkers from Aristotle to Descartes. A second century Roman philosopher who wondered, “What is the cause of… the appearance in heaven of two rival images of the sun?” Though we now know why 12

sundogs appear, they will always capture our imagination.

INVERSIONS

This otherworldly effect happens in a particularly beautiful way here. An inverse in the temperature gradient causes a layer of fluffy clouds to sink down into the valley, submerging all but the tips of the tallest mountains, like Whitefish Mountain Resort. Riding up the chairlift feels like rising above a cloudy day in a plane. Suddenly, you break through the clouds, and it’s warm, brilliant blue, and sunny above.

The heavy blanket of clouds can block atmospheric flow, so in areas with heavy pollution, inversions can be problematic.

In Montana, however, they only trap clean, crisp air on the valley floor.

FATA M O R G A N A

This often and unusual superior mirage appears in the far distance in a narrow band above the horizon. It’s hard to describe Fata Morgana, but in Montana,

the mirage distorts mountaintops in the distance. It often looks like the range is lined with column-like crenellations, or that it has ephemeral floating peaks. This optical phenomenon is also the result of bent light, but in this case, sunrays refract when they pass through air layers of different temperatures.

The mirage earns its name from an Italian sorceress Morgan le Fay, who was known as The Fairy Morgana. As legend goes, she created untouchable airborne fairy castles that floated just above the horizon in the distance.

The old 19th century tale of the Flying Dutchman can likely be chalked up to Fata Morgana. According to folklore, the Dutchman is a ghost ship that can never find its home port, and thus doomed to sail the seas forever. But it’s more likely that the floating forms sailors observed in the distance were just a mirage. Today, the illusion still dupes many—those who believe in extraterrestrials might imagine that a Fata Morgana is a UFO cruising in from space.

HELL ROARIN’

HISTORY Skiers have been schussing down Big Mountain— among Montana’s oldest ski resorts—for nearly 70 years

T

hough the ski area is now called Whitefish Mountain Resort, the snow-capped peak overlooking town has always been known, simply and fittingly, as Big Mountain. Long ago, two of its first skiers, Lloyd “Mully” Muldown and Ole Dalen, donned leather and wool instead of Gore-Tex to ski, but they appreciated Big Mountain for everything locals still love it for today.

While the resort offers terrain fit for any kind of skier, it’s best known for tree skiing. There’s nothing like bobbing through hillsides of trees bent over and encrusted with heavy snow, taking on the peculiar appearance of “snow ghosts.” For those still honing their skills, there’s an expansive lower mountain with smooth, groomed trails. For skiers seeking technical lines, the resort also offers many short but steep runs. Many of these can be found in Hellroaring Basin, the name

a nod to Mully and Ole’s days ripping around the undeveloped mountain.

In 1935, the two men built a cabin at the head of Hell Roaring Creek. This marked the unofficial birth of the Hell Roaring Ski Club, which became the heart of the burgeoning ski community.

Mully became the club’s first president and the first ski coach at Whitefish High School in 1937, taking it upon himself to teach as many locals as possible to ski.

He traveled to Europe to keep abreast of the newest ski equipment and technology in the yet-emerging sport, determined that rural Whitefish would stay on the cutting edge.

Soon, the club built a second cabin, cleared trees for continuous runs, and added a rope tow. Then in 1940, the Great Northern Railway sent a scout to Whitefish. Al Lindley, who had been a member of the 1936 US Ski Team, was

to survey the area for future development. After skiing a few days with the Hell Roaring crew, he reported back: We’ve got to build a ski resort here. But, come World War II, many of Whitefish’s skiing pioneers left town to serve overseas. Some, like Ole, even joined the prestigious 10th Mountain Division, an infantry of soldiers trained to do battle on skis.

Development slowed until mid –century. George Prentice and Ed Schenek arrived one winter from Great Falls, Montana, searching for the West’s great undiscovered ski area. They planned to stay a season to fully test Big Mountain’s snow quality. By March, though, they were already mapping out final plans for lifts and runs. On December 14, 1947, they opened the doors to a new resort, no longer undiscovered, but still one of the West’s great ski areas.

Get to know Glacier National Park, home to 25 active glaciers, bighorn sheep, and a road to the sun

S

ome 170 million years ago, the soaring mountains that define Glacier Park were formed when enormous bands of limestone wrinkled under the pressure of Earth’s ancient plates. A flash of geological time later, miles of glaciers crept down from the north. They eased their way down the deep valleys, buffing and smoothing some slopes while leaving the peaks jagged and raw. Today, the park’s northern edge bumps up against the Canadian border, meeting Waterton Lakes National Park to create the world’s first International Peace Park. Stretching out over 1 million acres of land, it’s still wild and pristine.

One of Glacier National Park’s defining features is the Going-to-theSun Road, an engineering marvel of a road that cuts across sheer mountain faces in the park. Approximately 50 miles long, it stretches between the east and west entrances. It takes about two hours to traverse without stopping. But of course, with lookouts and pullouts and points of interest along the way, it’s nearly impossible to drive the Sun Road 38

without stopping at least once to take in a vista—and there’s always the possibility that traffic will halt to let a friendly mountain goat cross the road.

The road got its name from the nearby Going-to-the-Sun Mountain, which in turn got its name from a Blackfeet sun deity, Sour Spirit, who descended to the Earth to teach First Nations tribes the hunt. When he returned to the skies, as legend tells it, he left his mark on the top of a mountain so that the Blackfeet could remember his teachings and find continual inspiration.

With one of the most diverse and intact ecosystems in the world, a swath of land encompassing Glacier National Park is known as the Crown of the Continent—and the park is known as its Jewel. An inspired George Bird Grinnell, after whom the Grinnell Glacier is named, first coined the term in 1901. Find the trailhead for this four-mile loop near Lake McDonald on the Going-to-the-Sun Road. The eastern half of the trail passes through a hemlock and red cedar forest carpeted with ferns and moss. Shortly after departing from the trailhead, it passes by Avalanche Gorge, and then climbs alongside Avalanche Creek into a denser forest. Two miles in, hikers reach the foot of Avalanche Lake. Relax on the sunny, sandy beach area, or continue down the western shoreline to the head of the lake.

Only the woodland caribou and bison have disappeared since the park’s founding over 100 years ago.

Grizzly bears capture the imagination of Glacier’s visitors more than almost any other species. Scientists’ most up-to-date estimates place over 300 grizzlies in the park (along with 600 black bears). They spend all summer wandering lowland meadows and aspen groves, and then return to the high country for their winter snooze.

They steer clear of humans for the most part, but if you get lucky, you might just see a bruin lumbering up a trail.

Cutting through the Garden Wall above the Going-to-the-Sun Road, this trail gives hikers the most bang for their buck. Relatively flat, the hike is more of a long, panoramic traverse.

And though it’s called a loop, this 11.8-mile hike is actually a one-way hike, so hikers can tailor their trip, turning around earlier if necessary.

It’ll be hard to turn back, however, as the easy access to high-elevation mountain passes also provides vistas not visible from the Sun Road.

Located near the southwest corner of the park, this is one of the first hikes visitors encounter after passing through the West Glacier Entrance Station. The seven-mile trip is a steady climb not for the feint of heart, but it winds up a burn area from 2003, meaning you have endless views the whole time. And when the trail tops out at the lookout, it provides a unique vantage point of Lake McDonald. One of the first established hikes in the park, the Apgar Lookout trail is a classic.

This two-mile trail sets off from the eastern side of the Sun Road, about 10 miles west of the St. Mary Entrance Station. Gentle and with little elevation gain, the path passes through conifer forest toward the St. Mary River. Hikers press on as the sound of rushing water grows. Soon, the trail bumps up against the 35-foot tall, three-tier St. Mary Falls. Even on the hottest of summer days, the falls cast a cool mist down the gorge, making for a perfect picnic location.

magine this. It’s 1880 and you’ve settled by the southern tip of a sparkling, expansive lake at what feels like the edge of the universe. Your family’s hands have built a town with all the trappings of home, and just a few hours to the south sit settlements and more resources.

But there’s also the matter of the north—to the north is a dark, dangerous, beautiful mystery. Mountains rise up on all sides of your little settlement, and where there’s not an impassible rocky peak, there’s an endless body of water.

Some have traveled on foot or horseback on rocky trails around the lake, but for the most part, homesteaders don’t think about the risks and uncertainty of traveling to the interior of the valley up north.

Then, in 1884, Fred Lingren, Neil and George Nelson, and Hugh F. Sinclair ventured to sail across the lake.

Large enough to carry 20 tons and several passengers, their vessel, the Swan, delivered the men across 28 miles of choppy water to Dooley’s Landing.

It wasn’t smooth, but it was a success.

Two years later, James C. Kerr, a former captain on Lake Superior, converted the Swan into a steamboat and everything changed.

The new Swan crossed Flathead Lake twice a week, permitting the transportation of enough goods and people to develop the new harbor town. More ships came. In a single five-day span, one steamer called the Tom Carter carted some 580 passengers. For the next fifty years, hundreds of ships would brave the Flathead’s waters—and steamboats became a sign of growth and development.

The popularity of these ships didn’t last forever, though. They sealed their

own fate, in a way. Steamers soon began to ship supplies that would connect the Flathead to the Great Northern Railway.

The railway was completed in 1892, and with a train stop in Kalispell (it was later moved to Whitefish), need for the steamboat dwindled. Some even sunk in the lake and were never retrieved.

Just after the turn of the 20th century, steamboats became obsolete and eventually, car travel replaced rail travel in popularity. Look at the boats on the lake today—sleek, beautiful, all fun and finesse—and you’d be none the wiser that their legacy traces back to the heavy-duty, steam-powered predecessors that made it possible to settle the Flathead Valley.

Stop by a roadside stand for one of the region’s best treats: Flathead Sweet Cherries. Or head for the hills to harvest your own Montana-famous Huckleberries

S

ometime near the middle of May—when exactly is dependent on weather patterns around the lake—cherry trees at the southern terminus of Flathead Lake begin to flower. The bloom flows north, and as entire orchards turn white, it surrounds the lake in a ring of flowers by the end of the month.

The sweet cherries themselves, however, ripen later in the summer, in July and August. That’s long after most other cherry trees across the country have dried up. So if you’ve ever eaten fresh cherries on Labor Day, there’s a good chance that you’ve already enjoyed this regional treat.

There’s no specific strain of Flathead cherry. Farmers here grow millions of pounds of all varieties, including Lapin, Sweetheart, Rainier, and Santina cherries. It’s the unique soil, climate, and

water here that makes the crop singular.

Everything comes together like magic for a reliably plump harvest.

A stalwart crop for local farmers, people living around the valley have long celebrated the cherries at the Flathead Cherry Festival in Polson, at the south end of the lake. One of the summer’s best weekends, craftsmen, vendors, musicians, and foodies come together for the fête.

The region is also famous for its prized huckleberries, a purple-blue berry related to the blueberry. The huckleberry’s flavor is similar to its cousin’s, often just a little bit more tart. It’s a staple in the Montana palate.

Much more elusive, sensitive to weather shifts, and resistant to domestication, huckleberries are a special breed. Unless you have a particularly nice friend, or you catch a roadside stand early in the morning, one must harvest these

berries themselves.

Most summers, the mountains surrounding the Flathead bear a generous huckleberry bounty. They thrive in mid-alpine regions between 3,000 and 7,000 feet. Look for forests with roughly 50 percent tree cover. Huckleberries love sunlight, just not too much. Anytime between May and July, you’ll likely find wild hucks on sunny, south-facing slopes with a slight incline. As the summer stretches on, bushes at increasingly higher elevations will pop bright blue.

They’ve long been used as a traditional medicine, and now you can find them in almost every baked good and household product, from pie and muffins to soap and candles. But here’s the thing: You’ll never get sick of ‘em. We promise. Same goes for those sweet, sweet Flathead cherries. Mid-winter, you’ll thank your lucky stars that you bought some preserves. When the next summer rolls around, you’ll look for that explosion of white flowers and blue bushes.

And you’ll slam on your breaks the second you see that first “Fresh Hucks for Sale” sign.

Recently ranked by Golf Digest as the best course in Montana, it unfolds over 7,000 yards of rolling, manicured, kelly-green land. Legendary architect Tom Fazio created something that feels so natural, and incorporates Montana’s features so seamlessly that you might just believe that the universe made the land this way. Let’s take a closer look at the 18 glorious holes.

The first hole is a straightforward par-four. A large bunker guards a leftto-right fairway and two-tiered green.

The second hole’s tiered shot gives the impression of a generous landing area, but a large ravine cuts between the multitiered green. Hole 3, another par four, requires a well-placed drive to a far-off

peninsula green. But don’t go too long— the green sits high above a steep dropoff. The fourth hole faces the Sapphire Mountains. You’ll need to place your tee shot from the elevated tree on the left side to access the protected green.

Careful—there’s a small creek just short of the green.

The fifth hole is the longest par-three on the course, and hole six is the longest par-five on the course. It plays 615 yards from the championship tees across a sloping fairway that sends shots to the left.

The seventh hole is an uphill par-three for which you’ll want to club up. Next, hole eight, a dogleg-left par-five, which also plays uphill. A big lake on the left is a hazard, and golfers who tend to hit long might want to aim left, cut off some yardage, and go for the green in two. The ninth hole is a long par-four that plays into a breeze from an elevated green.

Hole ten, a par-four, is one of the most picturesque. A deceptively roomy fairway slips into a green that sits partially hidden. On the next hole, 11, pin placement is the name of the game. The 12th

hole is a par-three downhill that gives way to serene pastures. This shot is all carry, so bring some club—and don’t hit it short. 11 is followed by the most beautiful hole of the course, a dogleg-right par-five that plays back toward the Three Sister/ Como peaks. A generous fairway catches errant tee shots, and a deep green slopes severely. Hole 14 is beautiful but tough. The par-four requires a great tee shot to clear the large bunker left. Your second shot will play uphill to a bowlshaped green.

Now you’re on the home stretch. At number 15, a short, dogleg-right parfour, you’ll want to hit a straight tee shot. That’ll set you up to nail the shallow, sloping green. The 16th hole is a short, uphill par-five that puts up a good fight. Second to last, 17 is a tight, short par-three lined with Ponderosa pines. It requires pin-point accuracy. Say adieu to this wonderful course with a classic gunsight hole that provides the best views of the day. A severely elevated tee helps the up-down-up play longer than it really is.

ontana Gubernatorial candidate and tech pioneer Greg Gianforte founded customer-experience software company RightNow Technologies in 1997.

He later said that their nascent venture was an “experiment in whether Internet could remove geography as a constraint in where you locate a business.” Nearly 20 years later, Gianforte has proved that a tech business could survive— and thrive—in a picturesque Montana mountain town. But it wasn’t any mountain town. It was Bozeman.

The city is chock-full of tech entrepaneurs, innovators, and successful start-ups.

Last year, the Big Sky state was ranked as the most entrepreneurial in the United States.

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported in fall 2015, following the first bi-annual Montana high tech jobs summit, that the high tech industry is adding jobs at a faster rate here than any other sector, and that the jobs are generally higher paying.

The trend isn’t new, though— Gianforte was not the first tech giant to pop up in Bozeman. The industry’s legacy here can be traced back to the early 1990s, when Chris Nelson formed Zoot Enterprises, which parses credit file data.

As the University of Montana’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research reported, the trend has stayed strong ever since. “Growth in high tech businesses is outpacing that of other sectors of the state’s economy,” a study reads.

The university itself is a locus for progression in the local tech industry.

“This is like a tech founder’s dream,” James Woodson, CEO of a startup that streamlines heart attack and stroke care, told the Chronicle. “When it comes to getting resources, [Bozeman] has been a fantastic environment start to finish. It was a no-brainer to set up here.”

Intelligent tech workers migrate here for the same reason that most people do—the beautiful quality of life and natural amenities. The region may “not have the same sway as Silicon Valley,” Lewis Kendall, the Chronicle’s business editor has written, but “the area is quickly gaining a national reputation.”

“You don’t think about the Gallatin Valley as being the hub of technology,” Senator Steve Daines told the U.S. Senate in a 2015 speech, “But as the world is changing, as technology is removing geography as a constraint, you have places where the quality of life is exceptional and [you] can grow world class high tech companies there.”

The United States’ first national park has a long history steeped in disbelief and myth

M

ankind has been amazed by Yellowstone’s natural splendor for some 11,000 years, when groups of Native Americans began to hunt in the rich forests and fish the rushing rivers.

European explorers first stumbled upon Yellowstone’s otherworldly lava flows, geothermal features, and high-elevation lakes in the early 1800s. John Colter, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, defected to join a group of fur trappers and passed through a portion of the future park. When he returned home, he excitedly described a place of “fire and brimstone,” but most people thought he was delirious—his “visions” were nicknamed “Colter’s Hell,” and became the stuff of folklore.

In 1869, the adventurous Ferdinand V. Hayden set out on a two-year trip

to explore the northern Rockies with U.S. Army Surveyor Captain William F. Raynolds. But heavy spring snows prevented their passage across the Continental Divide. Had they been able to cross the pass, they would have gazed down on Yellowstone as the first organized, official survey.

The occasional report of Yellowstone’s oddities from intrepid explorers continued to trickle back east over the years.

They did little to dispel the perception that the boiling mud and steaming rivers were myth. Finally, after the conclusion of the Civil War, a detailed expedition funded by three private explorers ventured west in 1869 to prove “Colter’s Hell” as fact or fiction.

After a month, they returned west with a definitive report of the region’s bizarre beauty. They recommended that Congress should “pass a bill reserving the Great Geyser Basin as a public park forever.”

But the populace still didn’t quite buy it. So Ferdinand V. Hayden, deciding he would finally see this place for himself, returned west with government sponsorship on what was later called the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871. He came home with large-format photography and paintings. Almost immediately upon his return, in March of 1872, Yellowstone received its designation as the first national park in the United States.

Once upon a time, in 1973, when the resort opened, just four lifts ran up its slopes. Big Sky was the vision of NBC News anchorman Chet Huntley, a Montana native who came back to his home state after airing his last broadcast in 1970. In 1995, Big Sky installed the Lone Peak Tram, an engineering marvel.
