Dear Members and Friends of Circle City Lodge, Just as our Julefest on Dec. 3 was, I hope you had a memorable Christmas. Getting together with family and friends for casual visiting is rewarding and special, so I hope you had the opportunity to do this.

I enjoyed visiting with my Mom in Minnesota and my sister from South Carolina, who I picked up at the Minneapolis airport on my way.

The new year is here and we look forward to some exciting events and programs. One half hour prior to our Saturday, January 14, noon meeting, those interested in writing personal memories will gather. Feel free to join us even if this is your first time in our Memoir Writing Club. Our lutefisk

meal is in February and in April, after she returns from Florida, Carol Neiman has agreed to give a hardanger embroidery workshop. In May we will have a Grieg concert played by Greg Martin, faculty at the University of Indianapolis. The details of these and other programs will be communicated to you in the future as the details are finalized.

A walk along the canal in Indianapolis is scheduled for the third Saturday in January (Jan. 21

at 10:30 am). Meet at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center. The group will eat lunch at the Center afterwards so parking will be free. Another new offering planned for 2017 is to participate in the district bowling tournament between January and April. See the article on page 8 for the details. The feasibility of a genealogy workshop is also being considered.

I look forward to sharing these events with you, and if you have any program ideas please share

them with me. It is the executive board’s intent to make membership in our lodge fun and fulfilling.

Please join me in offering a very warm welcome to all 12 of our new members for 2016. They

are listed on page 5 of the newsletter. Please print this section (or remove it if you receive a paper copy) from your newsletter and insert it in your membership directory for future reference.

In January 2016, the board established three goals for the year: 10 new members, 10 earned

cultural skills pins, and 10 earned sports medals for the year. We have exceeded the first one as you read above! Assessing whether we met the other two goals is difficult since members submit the paperwork for cultural pins and don’t receive a response until months later. Several have been received in 2016 and others should be awarded soon. On the sports medals, I am not aware of any THE LUREN / V26 ISSUE ONE / PAGE 2

that have been granted. Although there are many physically active members, they have simply not registered in the sports medal program.

Genealogy A TEN-STEP PROGRAM TO GET YOU STARTED

1. A method to learn and write about your family history 2. Golden Rule – Always start with yourself 3. Start by writing down what you know 4. Go through your family “stuff” 5. Talk to other family members; keep in mind “Grandma may have lied”!

6. Use the Internet at home or at a branch library as some sites are not free a. Keep in mind variant spellings of name 7. Go the area where your family lived and visit: a. Cemetery (talk to anyone who happens to be there) b. Court House c. Church d. Local Library e. Look for others in the area with the same name f. Contact local or County Genealogical Groups 8. Share your work and information with other family members 9. Write your personal life story, or snippets, for future generations 10. If you find a “black sheep”, don’t be alarmed as you are not responsible for others with your family name, plus you have something special!

NORWAY’S DECEMBER WEATHER AS WARM AS SUMMER

This winter’s mild weather in Norway set a new record on Thursday night. (30 December 2016) In the town of Sunndalsøra in Møre og Romsdal county, the thermostat reached 18.1C, the highest temperature ever recorded in Norway this late in December.

That’s also significantly higher than the average temperature of the summer months. The Sunndalsøra observation centre recorded average monthly temperatures of 13.6C in June, 15.8C in July and 14.1C in August.

While 18.1C is the new record for this late in December, Thursday’s high fell just short of the month’s record.

The Sunndalsøra observation centre recorded 18.3C on December 1st, 1998.

Other areas in Møre og Romsdal recorded abnormally high temperatures on Thursday night, including Tafjord (16.8C), Marstein (16.3C) and Valldal (14.4C). www.thelocal.no

We are hoping to start a moderate walking group (no forced marches.) The walks will be on the third Saturday of the month at 10:00 or 10:30 – to be announced before the walk.

After the walk we will have lunch at a near-by restaurant.

We will not walk if it is icy or the weather is threatening (thunderstorms, blizzards, tornadoes, and the like) so by Friday noon before the walk I will need to have confirmation by email or phone of those planning on joining us.

The first walk will be held at 10:30 sharp on January 21, leaving from the Indiana Historical Center. Following the walk we will eat at the Stardust Café, which means that we may park for free in the IHC’s lot. A wonderful match-up occurred as a result of the last newsletter. Jean Tygum said it was really fun to hear from a “new” relative.

Greetings, I just read the bio for Jean Tygum, in Volume 24 Issue 2 of your Sons of Norway publication. As it turns out, I’m related to Jean, in that we both have the same great-great-great grandparents, Peter and Thora Solverson, who immigrated from Norway in 1858.

I’m wondering if you could provide a contact email for Jean.

I’m planning to visit the Vernon County area next spring, where Peter and Thora had their original homestead and I’m hoping she might be able to provide information on its location. I visited the Fortun area in Norway in 2013, where Peter was originally from and it would be interesting to see their homestead In the US too.
