The Spanish Armada & Spanish Point Throughout 1587 & early 1588, rumours that Philip of Spain was assembling a massive fleet to conquer England & Ireland were spreading like wildfire. These reports came mainly from the crews of trading ships returning from the ports of Spain. The purpose of the Armada was to wipe out the English fleet. From the mouth of the English channel the Armada moved in a tight crescent-shaped formation, defying & puzzling the English. However, they broke the formation by sending in fireships by night, causing panic among the Spaniards. In the subsequent sea battle, grave losses of ships & men were incurred by the Spanish fleet while the English fleet came through unscathed. The wind changed & the commander of the Armada ordered the fleet to sail North, around Scotland & wide around Ireland & back to Spain. The winds were unkind to the fleeing Armada along the western coast of Ireland as was the reception given any of the sailors which had come ashore to barter for food & supplies as none was given. There was news of many disasters along the coast. At the White Strand the San Esteban went down along with almost all the 300 crew having drowned but about 60.

At I Brickane, the San Marcos, broke up on the reef between Mutton Island & Lurga Point, with only 4 survivors. On coming ashore some of the survivors from both ships were killed by the English & some natives & the rest were held in Clancy’s Castle near Spanish Point. There prisoners were all hanged & their bodies buried in a mass grave known as Tuama na Spaineach.

John Burke May 2017, saw John Burke become the first Clare man to stand on top of Mt. Everest. He planted the county flag on the summit after years of planning & training for the gruelling & challenging assent to the top of the world. He climbed hills & mountains in Ireland & Scotand, scaled Mount Blanc, the Matterhorn, Kilimanjaro & Ama Dablan in the Himalayas in preparation for the big one - Mt. Everest.

On his return he was welcomed home by crowds of well wishers at the airport & in Miltown Malbay. Clare Council awarded our Clare hero a civic reception where many of the councillors paid him their own personal tributes.

Willie Clancy Statue On November 9th, 2013, a life-size bronze statue of Willie Clancy was unveiled on the main street of Miltown Malbay by renowned uilleann piper Liam O’Flynn. Liam was a friend & student of the legendary West Clare piper before Willie's death in 1973. The statue has been donated to the people of Clare by Judith & Barry Merrill, an American couple who spend much of the year in the Miltown Malbay area & have been great supporters of the summer school. Judith & Barry commissioned local sculptor Shane Gilmore to create the statue which was cast in Séamus Connolly’s foundry in Kilbaha, Co. Clare. The base & seating area was constructed using Liscannor Flagstone

A fellow walks into a bar very down on himself. As he walks up to the bar the bartender asks, “what’s the ma�er?” The fellow replies, “I’ve got these two horses & I can’t tell them apart. I don’t know if I’m mixing up riding �mes or even feeding them the right foods.” “Why don’t you try shaving the tail of one of the horses?” said the bartender.

The man stops crying & says, “that sounds like a good idea, I’ll try it.” A few months later he comes back to the bar in worse condi�on than before.

“What’s the ma�er now?” the bartender asks. The fellow sniffs & answers, “I shaved the tail of one of the horses but it grew back & I can’t tell them apart again!” The bartender says, “why don’t you try shaving the mane, maybe that will not grow back.” The fellow stops crying, has a few drinks & leaves. A few months later the fellow is back & the bartender has never seen anybody in this sorry a state. Without even being asked the fellow cries. “I shaved the mane off one & it grew back”.

The bartender, now furious at the guy’s stupidity, yells, “for crying out loud, just measure the stupid horses. Perhaps one is taller that the other!” The fellow cannot believe what the bartender has said & storms out of the bar. The next day the fellow comes running back into the bar as if he had just won the lo�ery. “It worked, it worked!” he exclaims. “I measured the horses & the black one is two inches taller than the white one!”

One night a man stumbled into the police sta�on with a black eye. He claimed he had heard a noise in his back yard & went to inves�gate. The next he knew, he was hit in the eye & knocked out cold. An officer was sent to his house to inves�gate & he returned 2 hours later with a black eye.

“Did you get hit by the same person?” his captain asked. “No,” he replied. “I stepped on the same rake.”

A rich man was trying to find his daughter a birthday gi� when he saw a poor man with a beau�ful white horse. He told the man that he would give him €500 for the horse. The poor man replied, “I don’t know mister, it don’t look so good,” & walked away. The next day the rich man came back & offered the poor man €1,000 for the horse. The poor man said, “I don’t know mister, it don’t look so good.” On the third day the rich man offered the poor man €2000 for the horse & said he wouldn’t take no for an answer. The poor man agreed & the rich man took the horse home. The rich man’s daughter was delighted with her present. She climbed onto the horse, then galloped right into a tree.

The rich man rushed back over to the poor man’s house, demanding an explana�on for the horse’s blindness. The poor man replied, “I told you. It don’t look so good.”

When the store manager returned from lunch, he no�ced his clerk’s hand was bandaged, but before he could ask about the bandage, the clerk had some very good news for him. “Guess what, sir?” the clerk said. “I finally sold that terrible, ugly suit we’ve had so long!” “Do you mean that repulsive pink-and-blue double-breasted thing?!” the manager asked. “That’s the one!” “That’s great!” the manager cried, “I thought we’d never get rid of that monstrosity!

That had to be the ugliest suit we’ve ever had! But tell me, why is your hand bandaged?” “Oh,” the clerk replied, “a�er I sold the guy that suit, his seeing-eye dog bit me.
