WHO WE ARE? We support, advocate for and empower individuals, children & families by applying educational, social and economic resources that move the community towards self-sufficiency.

I

would like to personally welcome each of you to Flanner House of Indianapolis’ 120th Anniversary Gala Celebration.

It’s an exciting time for Flanner House as we continue to grow with a focus on being adaptable, motivated, and responsive to the needs of our clients and the greater Northwest Area.

Flanner House, as in the past, is well positioned today to respond to the challenges facing all of Indianapolis, with a laser-like focus on our immediate community.

Housing, Economic Development, Crime Prevention, Youth Development, Community Asset Building and Food Security are just some of the programs we offer to address challenges that are impacting residents.

We strive to address these challenges in a way that restores self-dignity, builds community pride, and spurs growth and development without the threat of displacement of our residents.

In a time when there is so much focus given to what divides us, let us come together to celebrate our common bonds of kindness, compassion and humanity.

Booker T. Washington, who worked with Frank Flanner to create our beloved agency once wrote, “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.” There have been many challenges and obstacles that we have faced over the last 120 years, and each one has served as a valuable lesson in shaping and helping us refine our practice to serve all of our community and to meet each client in the fullness of their humanity.

OUR WORK

T

he Flanner House Child Development Center was established at Flanner House over 80 years ago. The program is designed to provide quality early childhood education for low income working parents. The program utilizes the Core Knowledge Curriculum and assess student progress with the Brigance Assessment. All of the teachers in the program are CDA certified by the State of Indiana. The majority of the families are subsidized on a sliding scale fee based upon their income. Program funding is received either through government resources or private funders. The FHCDC is also licensed by the state of Indiana and has earned a Level 4 Paths to Quality certification. Flanner House be-

lieves that in order to prevent the progression of individuals into a life of poverty, it must begin with quality education at a very young age.

At FHCDC, children graduate from this program with a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and independence, FHCDC’s long term commitment to maintaining a high quality environment is evident in its recent improvements in the areas of professionalism, management, organization and curriculum implementation. FHCDC hours are from 6am – 6pm serving ages 3 mos. – 5 yrs. CCDF and On My Way Pre-K accepted.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Center for Working Families

Before and After Care/Youth

R

esearch shows that most crimes by youth and adolescents occur immediately after school dismisses. Flanner House provides before and after school programming for a number of area youth ages 5 – 17 years old. Our programing is broken into two parts. The first is Flanner House’s Before & After Care Program. This program is for children grades K – 6 and is designed to provide mentoring, homework assistance and a safe place for children during non-school hours.

Community Service. These programs are supervised by a professional staff including area college students. The students are offered a variety of activities such as the Jim Caldwell Computer Lab, summer work opportunities, sports opportunities, mentoring opportunities, arts and crafts and drug and violence aversion programs.

enter for Working Families is a national program located in many large urban areas across the United States. Site selection is a competitive process. Flanner House is one of the twelve CWF sites who have been operating since 2009. Funded by the United Way (CWF), Siemer, CICF, Nina Mason Pulliam, Honda and generous individual contribu-

tors, this program provides financial emergency assistance, life skills training, job readiness, financial coaching (budgeting, credit, banking etc.), Skills to Success classes (Job Readiness Program) help assisting individuals on resumes, mock interviews and job search. We host a Monthly Job Fair held on the third Thursday of each month 1pm – 3pm.

Additionally, Flanner House provides college scholarships to low income area youth that are enrolled in college through the Osma D. Spurlock ScholarThe second is Flanner House’s Impact Positive ship Fund and tuition scholarships for the Flanner Youth Program. This program is for youth 12 – 17 House Summer Camp and Before & After School years of age and its focus is to help develop youth Care. Since 2009, Flanner House provided over into community leaders. Teen participants take $62,500 in before and after school care scholarpart in activities such as: Workforce Development, ships.

lanner House operates a thriving senior program for low income individuals in our community who are 55 and above. The Flanner House program provides social services referrals, socialization activities, transportation support, hot meals, health screenings and myriad of other services specifically geared to this population. Flanner House operates an Elder Center on site Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 10am – 2pm. Over the years the Elder’s Program has been able to host a successful Salad Spread with over 200 participants from surround-

ing centers, a Mind, Body and Soul program that has put together community programs such as Veterans Day, Mother/Father’s Day, Health Awareness and end of the year fellowship. As the seniors maintain their Health and Wellness they have collaborated with the Watkins Centers in the Chair Aerobics programs, Karanett water aerobics and Line Dancing at Riverside. This program has been funded by the Indianapolis Senior Fund, CICF and private individual funders. The agency partners with Second Helpings to provide food service.

I

n direct response to community need, Flanner House has been serving as the convener and fiscal agent for the Northwest Quality of Life Plan created by the residents in 2014. The overall goal of the plan is to revitalize the surrounding neighborhood through the ongoing efforts of six community action committees including Arts, Parks & Public Spaces, Community Safety & Peace Building, Economic Development, Housing, Education and Food Access.

Each committee is led by a resident and an institu-

tional stakeholder with a vested interest in the success of the plan. The committees are supported by a governance committee that works alongside the TIF Advisory Council to ensure that resident input is included in those decisions that directly impact them. We encourage everyone including business owners, faith based and nonprofit organizations to join us every third Thursday at 5:30 for fellowship, a light meal and updates from the committees. Together we can make it happen!

T

he northwest area of Indianapolis is the largest food desert in Indy which makes sustainable urban agriculture in high demand and a much needed addition for the existing social service and programming of agencies like Flanner House. On the heels of the remaining Double 8 grocery stores closing, Flanner House established its 2.5 acre Flanner Farm to address the rapid food scarcity in our catchment area and beyond. Flanner Farm allows us to provide healthy, affordable, culturally appropriate produce to those who need it most, while becoming food secure and self-sufficient in the process. There are multiple urban farms in the city, but our operation is committed to addressing food insecurity through providing affordable food access.

For 120 years Flanner House has been a hub of community resilience and food justice. Going back to its inception, Flanner House training programs have always emphasized the idea of self-help and community empowerment. The Food Program was one of the most memorable programs that reflected those objectives. The Food Program consisted of gardening, canning, nutritional and food distribution initiatives. A participant in the program could have a garden plot and worked with a trained agriculturist through the process to help them develop their skills. Community members could then preserve their food at a self-help cannery, which was

equipped with production grade equipment. Along with the cultivation of organic produce, Flanner House also organized a food Co-Op for community members to source directly from those growing in the neighborhood. The Food Program provided cooking classes that taught about food preparation and nutrition, which not only helped residents balance a healthy diet, but also gave them the skills to find job opportunities in the culinary or food service industry. These initiatives/enterprises that sustained our community for generations. We are seeking to rekindle the collective memories of resilience in our community to once again create the infrastructure for an equitable food system and economic opportunity.

F.E.E.D. is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and opportunities for young men and women 16 to 24, who are currently not enrolled in school, unemployed and engaged in the legal system; to help them become gainfully employed, adequately educated, economically stable and socially engaged within the growing sectors of the local food economy in Indianapolis. This program offers a trade in farming/distribution of farm products and at the same time providing an Urban Farm to address the food desert within the North West area of Indianapolis.
