TRIP ADVISOR REVIEWED June 2018

★★★★★ Best in its class! “The Wagon Wheel Motel is my choice if I’m anywhere near Killam. The rooms are all a little different from each other. Very comfortable and homey. Every time I get a room, I think – this is my favorite and then I get even a better room on the next visit and think – this is my new favorite. At the end of a long day, arriving here is like being home. I look forward to my next visit. The Motel is so quiet that you can sleep with the windows open and not have your rest interrupted. I really could go on forever about this place. It’s a real gem!”

MUSEUMS Take a step into the history of the Flagstaff Region

Alliance and District Museum Collections feature artifacts of the early history of the area and village. Displays include early costumes, military uniforms, pioneer furnishing, flags, maps, native artifacts, and an old radio collection. The museum has grown to include other buildings alongside of the church. There is a log cabin where three generations of one family lived; The Doll house situated behind the church is dedicated to the museum’s historical doll collection. They have over 1,000 dolls that are exhibited on a rotational basis. The Doll house even includes a special area where young visitors can play with dolls. Across the road is an antique farm machinery display, a blacksmith’s shop and a barn. 202-2 Street E, Alliance Ph: 780.879.3911

Diplomat Mine Interpretive Look around you. Hard to believe that millions of years ago this area was a lush subtropical forest, but the petrified tree stump unearthed at the Paintearth Mine gives you an inkling. That rich foliage as it decomposed and was compressed under layer upon layer of other materials and formed the plentiful coal deposits in this part of Alberta. In the early 1900s, area homesteaders first began digging small underground mines into the banks of the Battle River to access these deposits. Coal cars like the rebuilt model on site hauled coal out of the mines. The large machines here made their debut at the Diplomat Mine when the transition was made to surface mining in the late 1940s. Today, mining continues south of the river with draglines that can be used to mine much deeper coal. 14 km SW of Forestburg on Highway 855 Ph: 780.582.3668

44

Forestburg and District Museum Forestburg and District Museum is housed in an original Masonic Temple built in 1927. The museum houses a collection of homesteading and agricultural artifacts, an authentic 1920s kitchen, and memorabilia from WWII. In recognition of the area’s mining tradition, there are examples of early mining equipment complemented by a great selection of mining photos. The museum also brings in visiting exhibits from University of Lethbridge’s Art Department and Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD) in Calgary. 4707-50 Street, Forestburg Ph: 780.582.3668

Goose Creek School Museum The school houses a nice collection of sports uniforms, equipment, and memorabilia from the area. There is also a variety of adding machines and antique typewriters on display. In fact, the Oliver Typewriter is displayed next to typed pages from that typewriter. The school includes a Waterbury heater, green walls, hardwood floors and original writings on the blackboard. The classroom setting has been recreated and is complemented by other displays set around life in the country. 4702-48 Street, Sedgewick Ph: 780.384.3741

Iron Creek Museum Take a stroll down the wooden boardwalk and visit the homesteader’s cabin, a lawyer’s office, the shoemakers, or the Anglican Church where church services and wedding can be held to this day. The museum also has two schoolhouses, a collection of antique farm machinery, and a working scale-model water wheel that a local resident used to generate electricity. Each of the buildings features artifacts relating to the early history of the area. Across the highway from the original museum site is the wooden Pioneer Grain Elevator, the latest acquisition of the Iron Creek Museum. Highway 13, Lougheed Ph: 780.386.3970

45

Sedgewick Archives Gallery and Museum Sedgewick Archives Gallery and Museum are housed in a historical sandstone building built in 1906. This was the original Merchants Bank of Canada, later to be the Bank of Montreal. The sandstone bricks used in the building were made locally; there are several houses in town also made from these same types of bricks. The museum has a variety of collections including household accessories, tools, clothing and hats, medical supplies, jewelry, town archives, maps, and an extensive pictorial compilation. The gallery displays work by local artists and has an exceptional china collection. For a more personal experience, the archive is affiliated with the Salt Lake City Genealogy Library and equipped to access extensive genealogy information. 4702-48 Street, Sedgewick Ph: 780.384.3741

Sodbusters Archives Museum In 1904, settlers began to flock to the Strome area from around the world, enticed by the prospect of ‘free’ land. Strome became the hub of the wheel, with spokes leading out to the surrounding district. The museum preserves the story of the pioneers. Over 20,000 artifacts have been gathered that tell the ingenuity of the homesteaders and their families, and to show the rapid changes of this country – from oxcart to airplane. Many of the artifacts date back to the 1800s and include items that would be of interest to every age group. There is a wildlife display that includes a vast collection of Native and natural artifacts, as well as a train display donated by Strome resident George Woodward. The memorial hall displays local wedding dresses through the ages and features three generations of wedding dresses from one family. 5029-50 Street, Strome 780.376.3688
