ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Flagler Museum Supporters:

My fellow Trustees and the Museum Staff are so grateful for your continued support. This past year has been one of many changes, which have positioned the Museum for continued success in the years to come.

As the world emerged from the restrictions of the Pandemic early in this past year, I was honored to be elected as the new President of the Board of Trustees and to have the Museum’s former long-time Executive Director resume his leadership role at the Museum. Together the Trustees and Executive Director charted a new course for the Museum and in short order the Staff put together a full schedule of quality programming, despite a staffing shortage that seemed to plague nearly all nonprofits coming out of the Pandemic, and attendance quickly returned to pre-pandemic levels. None of this would have been possible without you, the Museum’s many Members, Contributors, and Grantors. By year-end, the Museum was more than ready for the new year and the new Season, which proved to be, in many ways, perhaps the best Season the Museum has ever had.

I hope reading this Annual Report fills you with pride and a sense of certainty that your support is making an important difference in our community and that the Museum is a credit to Palm Beach, Florida, and America, for the tens of thousands who visit each year from more than 40 countries and every State in the Union.

The Museum's Continuity of Leadership

In1959, the entire Whitehall property was in danger of being razed. Fortunately, Henry Flagler's granddaughter, Jean Flagler Matthews, learned of this and formed a nonprofit corporation, The Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, to purchase the property in 1959. The following year, Whitehall opened to the public with Jean Flagler Matthews as the President. Jean Flagler Matthews would serve as President for the first 20 years of the Museum's history.

Following his mother's death in 1979, George G. Matthews served as the Museum's President for the past 42 years. In addition to his role as President, Mr. Matthews has served as a Museum Trustee for 64 years, an extraordinarily long combined tenure, quite probably unmatched among the museums of the world, and continues to serve as a Trustee of the Museum.

During Mr. Matthew's tenure as President, he oversaw major restorations of the Museum, completed under the direction of the Museum's Executive Director, John Blades. This process involved over two dozen capital projects, the Museum's designation as a National Historic Landmark, its accreditation, and reaccreditation, by the American Alliance of Museums, and the receipt of the prestigious Ross Merrill Award for conservation. Only three other institutions in the nation have received all four honors. Among the many new programs, exhibitions, and additions to the Museum that Mr. Matthews was responsible for was a popular Bluegrass Concert series in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Always sold out, the concerts have become an innovative and welcome addition to the local music scene.

In March 2022, the Flagler Museum was pleased to announce that its Trustees elected Mrs. Kelly M. Hopkins as the third President of the Flagler Museum, following her father, George G. Matthews.

Mrs. Hopkins has served as a Trustee for 23 years and was the Founder of its Whitehall Society. She is a Hull Fellow, Class of 2013, through the South Eastern Council of Foundations. She also serves as a Trustee of the Relgalf Charitable Foundation, the Roaring Gap Foundation, and she served two terms on the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Mrs. Hopkins received her B.A. in education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a Master of Science in organizational development from McColl School of Business at Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Director's Report

WhenI was first appointed Executive Director in 1995, I knew that I found the right place for me and I continued to count my blessings over the next 21-plus years as together we undertook about two dozen capital projects to bring Whitehall back to its former glory and developed a comprehensive set of programs and exhibitions. Of course, when I retired in 2016 I was well aware that there will always be more to do at a place like Whitehall, I just wouldn’t have guessed that six years later I might have the honor again of helping to insure Whitehall’s preservation and continue its development as one of America’s great house museums. But, once in a great while lightning actually does strike twice. So here I am, lucky to have the opportunity to as Henry Flagler once said, “contribute to the work of the world.”

With the Pandemic ending and what seemed the whole world relocating to Palm Beach County, we had no time to waste putting together a full set of programming to interpret Whitehall, Henry Flagler’s life, and Florida history for the Museum’s many Members and Contributors, and all the new residents and visitors coming from around the world.

The Museum resumed Group Tour sales and walkup general admission in early spring. The 1,000 participants in the sold-out Annual Easter Egg Hunt enjoyed a beautiful day at the Museum. And, the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Holiday Evening Tours were, as always, very popular.

Director's Report

As has been the case for many years, the Palm Beach Mayor, Danielle Hickock Moore, delivered her Stateof-the-Town Address at Whitehall as part of the Civic Association’s Annual Meeting. The Museum’s Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day Teas were once again sold-out.

The Museum’s Beaux-Arts Café reopened Thanksgiving weekend, and once again walk-up sales were welcomed. The Museum Store was rebranded as H. M. Flagler & Co. with a refocus on quality proprietary and missionrelated merchandise.

In honor of the 120th anniversary of Whitehall’s completion, the Museum’s Fall Exhibition, titled The Story of Whitehall: 120 Years in the Making, opened in October and recounted the history of Whitehall as a home, a club, a hotel, and finally for the last 63 years as a museum and National Historic Landmark, revealed the symbolism throughout Whitehall, and highlighted its many unique features.

The Museum’s upper-level Members enjoyed both a Trustee's Reception and a special panel discussion with Paul Leone President of The Breakers, William Abare, President Emeritus of Flagler College, and John Blades about the preservation of three important historic Flagler sites.

Director's Report

The preservation of Whitehall is a never-ending endeavor that requires enormous resources and discipline. The Museum was very lucky to have William Fallacaro, Bernie Schell, and Idan Lopez come out of retirement to lead the Museum’s effort to insure that the Museum’s physical plant and its many systems are well-maintained. Among the many projects completed in 2022 was the repainting and conservation of Whitehall's 1,000-foot-long historic fence.

Other staff rejoined the Museum’s team as well, like David Carson who resumed his position as the Public Affairs Director, overseeing the production of all the Museum’s publications (including its magazine, Inside Whitehall, and this Annual Report), and Laura MacDermeid, who returned as the Museum’s Grants Manager.

Without hard work and help from every quarter - Founder, Trustees, Staff, Members, Contributors, and Grantors alike - the Flagler Museum would simply not exist. When Henry Flagler was once asked what it was like to be a self-made man, he scoffed at the idea, saying, “I have often wondered how far any of us can go as individuals without a helping hand from others?” I have to believe 130 years after Henry Flagler made that observation that he would be both gratified and amazed at what Whitehall has become, thanks to the hard work and help from all those recognized in this Annual Report, and so many more.
