Report

A Note From FAIA’S President & CEO

After facing one of the worst hurricanes in Florida history in 2022, 2023 continued to test the resilience of our members and the Association. Florida’s volatile insurance market dominated the news headlines and was a central focus of the Florida legislature. As is usually the case, it took the near collapse of the market for the legislature to enact reforms the insurance industry has been seeking for decades.

FAIA and our company partners fought hard for the transformational attorney fee, and Assignment of Benefits (AOB) reforms passed during the 2023 legislative session. However, we also warned the legislature, our members, and insurance consumers that it would take time for the market to recover after years of poor financial results at the hands of unscrupulous attorneys and contractors.

While the market saw minimal improvement throughout the year for agents and their customers, quarterly financial data submitted to the Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) by carriers does show positive trends. Those positive trends did lead to increased interest from investment capital. Several new carriers have already launched, and more are on the way.

Aside from legislative advocacy, FAIA continued to focus on ensuring that the Association’s value proposition continues to serve our members, no matter the agency’s size. 2023 was the first full year your association provided ten hours of continuing education to every licensee of

a member agency as part of membership dues. I am proud of this endeavor and the increased number of agencies that have taken advantage of the benefit. Professional development and continuing education have been, and will continue to be, one of the fundamental tenets of FAIA.

Speaking of education and professional development, FAIA’s 2023 Convention and Education Symposium was a recordbreaking show. With 1,832 registrants and 318 exhibitors, more than 3,400 people attended the event.

FAIA’s focus on our member’s needs is driven by strong leadership from our Board of Directors, volunteer leaders, and a dedicated team. Each is committed to ensuring our members have all the tools and resources needed to navigate these challenging times.

This report is a collection of this past year’s highlights, accomplishments, and successes. I am proud to say there were many. Thank you for your membership, and we look forward to continuing to serve as your trusted business partner.

THE BIG Picture

The Florida Association of Insurance Agents (FAIA) is a nonprofit state trade association of insurance agencies affiliated with the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America, Inc (IIABA). Advocacy

In 2023, more than 150 agents from throughout the state participated in FAIA’s annual Capitol Days event. Attendees had the opportunity to reconnect with association members and insurance industry stakeholders, hear from Legislative leadership, and work the hallways of the Capitol advocating for insurance reforms supporting independent insurance agents and the consumers they represent.

With so many of the 2022 legislative reforms focusing on property insurance, 2023 provided an opportunity to continue fine-tuning property insurance reforms and broaden the scope to address legal issues impacting the insurance market. During the 2023 Legislative Session, FAIA successfully advocated for the legislative priorities established by the association’s Board

of Directors and the Legislative and Regulatory Advocacy Council. The association’s advocacy efforts contributed to the passage of several items on the association’s Legislative plan of work, including:

• Tort Reforms: HB 837 – Includes several provisions addressing transparency in damages, bad faith reforms, repealing one-way attorney fees for all insurance cases, limiting contingency fee multipliers, and shortening the statute of limitations (negligence cases).

• Citizens Insurance: SB 7052 – Authorizes Citizens to consider coverage for damaged properties when a consumer loses insurance coverage because of insolvency.

• Construction Defects: SB 360 – Addresses the litigation crisis in construction defects claims by amending the statute of limitations, shortening the statute of repose, and limiting construction defects claims to certain defined defects.

• Auto Glass (AOB): SB 1002 – Prohibits the assignment of post-loss benefits for automobile glass claims.

The work to stabilize Florida’s insurance marketplace will continue into 2024. As the legislative arena ramps up, you can get more information on the above bills and more on our website.

Young Agents Council

FAIA’s Young Agents Council is dedicated to fostering a supportive environment for young insurance professionals committed to growing their careers and communities. Continuing its successful trend of YAC members ascending to FAIA volunteer leadership, several former and current YAC members will serve on FAIA’s 2023–2024 Board of Directors, including Chair-Elect Karyn Roeling and current board members Matt Ostrander and Tina Blackwell Romaine.

Each year, YAC honors its outstanding members and company partners with awards. This year, Joe Iten received the YAC of the Year Award, which recognizes an individual who has achieved a successful career in the independent agency

space, has made innovative contributions to the Young Agents Council, and has distinguished themselves as a future leader within the industry. Joe, who first served as the YAC Chair-Elect and then Chair in 2023, is known for his down-to-earth and compassionate nature. Despite his family being deeply ingrained in various volunteer roles throughout FAIA, Joe shines brightly in his own right and has made a name for himself within the association through his dedication and hard work.

Shannon Conlon Kernohan with Johnson & Johnson, Inc. was awarded YAC Company Individual of the Year. This award recognizes company members who have helped improve YAC with their time, resources, and knowledge.

Shannon, who started as a volunteer in 2019 and later became an official YAC member in 2022, was honored for her dedication, positive spirit, and meaningful contributions to the community.

Burns & Wilcox was recognized as the 2023 YAC Company of the Year. The award is given to company partners that make significant strides to contribute to the success of YAC and the insurance industry. Burns & Wilcox not only supported YAC with participation in events and a strong presence at the Sales and Leadership Conference, but they also added 27 members

$10,000 in school supplies collected and donated to underprivileged children in Florida

to the YAC roster this year and have been gold sponsors for three years in a row.

One of YAC’s most significant annual events is the YAC Sales and Leadership Conference (SALC). The conference draws young agents from around the state to learn about innovative sales techniques, current trends in insurancerelated technology, and leadership skills from industry leaders. This year, 138 agents attended the conference, where they got a chance to network, earn free CE credit, and sharpen their skills. Florida State University’s annual Intercollegiate Sales Competition was also hosted in conjunction with SALC this year, drawing in students from around the state.

Giving back to the community is one of the cornerstones of YAC, and this year, the group raised $20,000 for donation to the Folds of Honor during its annual Topgolf Tournament held in conjunction with FAIA’s Convention. Since 2010, YAC has donated more than $200,000 to Folds of Honor. In July, YAC also collected roughly $10,000 in school supplies and more than 200 backpacks for donation to four non-profit organizations across the state as part of the SmartStartforKids initiative.

CONVENTION 2023

In 2023, FAIA’s annual Convention and Education Symposium welcomed 1,832 registrants. Each year, FAIA’s chair helps to select the theme for our Convention. In honor of his love of the 80s and one of his favorite movies, Chair Garrett Butler chose the theme “Back to the Future.” All told, more than 3,455 people, including 318 exhibitors, attended last year’s Convention, marking the largest crowd ever to attend the event.

Each year at Convention, FAIA grants its most prestigious honor, the Mitchell Stallings Memorial Award, to an individual who has dedicated a lifetime to this industry, the association, and their community. Barbara B. Hall, CIC, CPIW was this year’s winner.

Known to most as Bobbie, she attended business school in Jacksonville and studied at the Santa Fe Community College and the University of Florida. She joined the Howard Hall Agency in 1963 as a bookkeeper and received her agent’s license in 1965. After briefly working in claims, Bobbie wrote property insurance and managed the office. In the late 1980s, she became the president and chief operating officer of the Howard Hall Agency, and, after selling the agency to American Phoenix, Bobbie remained the president for three more years.

Committed to helping the association and the insurance industry move forward, she

served on FAIA’s Board of Directors from 1992–1995, returning as vice chair in 1995 and becoming chair from 1998–1999. She was on the committee that hired Jeff Grady and served as the first chair during his tenure as president & CEO. Under her leadership and dedication, she not only helped Jeff learn many of the ins and outs of the insurance industry, but she introduced him to the world of independent agents.

Bobbie was presented the award at her home. She was overwhelmed with gratitude for being chosen to receive the Mitchell Stallings Memorial Award and we were able to capture the special moment on video

Education

Education is one of the founding pillars of FAIA. The association’s goal to deliver the best professional training for independent agents is always top of mind, and we strive to introduce new content in the best way possible. As part of that effort and at the direction of FAIA’s Board of Directors, the association began offering a complimentary 10-hour continuing education credit (CE) catalog in 2022. This year, members earned nearly 4,500 hours of free CE through the webinar-based courses. Through the new member benefit, which is valued at $250 for every licensed agency employee, members have collectively saved roughly $106,000 on professional development training.

Outside of the Education Member Benefit, the Education Department also offered a member-exclusive roster that included 52 unique classes. Collectively, classes were held a total of 462 times and drew in more than 6,200 students over the course of the year. More than 1,100 students also attended our National Alliance classes this year.

In March 2023, the department held it’s annual Spring E-Summit, offering each attendee up to 10 hours of complimentary continuing

education credit as part of their membership. More than 490 agents took advantage of the event, with attendees earning more than 3,000 hours of CE.

FAIA’s commitment to professional development has been recognized by the Big I for the last 16 years, with the association consistently earning the highest education designations. Continuing our tradition of excellence and commitment to education, FAIA again earned the Diamond Elite recognition in 2023, marking the fifth consecutive year the association has earned the designation.

Workforce Development

Bridging the talent gap for FAIA members is a top-tier priority for our team. The association believes that empowering the 11-state college risk management programs and working with Florida State University and the University of South Florida is fundamental to closing this gap.

This year, nine insurance companies pledged $30,000 to the Good Works Fund to support workforce development in our state. Thank you to American Integrity, Amwins, Carbrillo, Enterprise Holdings Foundation, Florida Peninsula, Frontline, Safeco Insurance/Liberty Mutual, Tower Hill, and UPC Insurance for your donations.

During our Summer Leadership Conference, the Workforce Development and Good Works

Fund committees also came together to adopt a plan of work for the future. FAIA recognizes that while financial assistance for these programs is essential, hands-on involvement is equally crucial to driving the desired change.

More than 740 members across the state qualified for a portion of the bonus. Over the last 13 years, FMS has awarded more than $2.2 million in utilization bonus money to FAIA members. As FMS continues to expand its market access programs, FAIA members earn more commission dollars. These competitive programs have returned over $100 million in commission income for agents over the past 13 years.

Our E&O team currently manages a $10.7 million professional liability book of business that includes 1,111 in-force policies. In 2023, we wrote over $1,000,000 in new business premium.
