Despite some soggy weather, last month was bustling with activities on the course, in the Clubhouse and at the Pool. July looks to be even more exciting and fun-filled, especially with our Independence Day celebrations which include the Bourbon & Bacon Fest and our Rockin’ BBQ and Fireworks. You can also get your 4th of July started off right with the annual Pancake Breakfast at the Club.

Our Golf Professionals outdid themselves with another great Men’s Invitational last month.

Although there was a slight rain delay, it didn’t deter our members and their guests from having an incredible experience. I want to thank all the members who participated and commend all of our staff for a job well done. I’d also like to thank our members who did NOT participate in the Whummle for your patience and support of this event.

July has arrived and spectacular golf and fun are on the Loch Lloyd horizon. The Whummle has come and gone and oh, what stories there are to talk about. Once again, the weather was at the center of attention … which has been the case all year long. This year, a “gustnado” was thrown into the middle of the Whummle. This resulted in some minor damage to the practice green, tree and tree limbs down and the inability to play one match. Other than that, we survived!

The month of July has the Club celebrating the 4th of July holiday with BBQ and fireworks.

The golf course celebrates Independence Day with our annual Flag Tournament on Friday, July 5th. The flag tournament is a fun way to try to win some credit. There will be a representative from the golf team on the first tee Friday morning to explain the rules.

Highland Game THE BRITISH OPEN Saturday, July 20th (All Day)

Join us for our fourth (and final) Highland Game of the season! Our Highland Games are friendly competitions that you can sign up for on the first tee.

Each Highland Game has a different format, revolving around the PGA Tour’s major championships. This month we’re paying tribute to the British Open. The Golf Professionals have designed this month’s game to add a little fun to your round, without interrupting your traditional Saturday group.

The cost of the event is $10 per player and guests are eligible to play, too! (Guest fees and cart fees additional.)

Dear Members, At the time of this writing, the eve of The Whummle was upon us and so was the first day of summer. The wet, cooler weather has not done us any favors to help our Zoysia grass fairways and June did not have the feel of summer at all.

Fairway Sod Project Update We finally have a break in the weather allowing us to revisit the sodding of damaged areas on fairways. If the weather holds, we are planning on prepping areas on Tuesday, July 9th and Wednesday, July 10th with sod install to start on Monday, July 15th. These dates are all based on when we can get the work done and receive sod from the turf farm.

One thing I want everyone to keep in mind, is that you will still notice “thin areas” after this project is completed. The thin areas will be purposefully left as they all show signs of improving and the Zoysia creeping back. The areas that heal themselves will be a much stronger plant than that of the new sod. Lastly, we will be mapping out areas for future drainage projects with an intention of doing this through the winter months. I have been asked by many members if our fairways struggled due to winter kill or from the amount of rain we’ve incurred. Great question as it truly is a combination. However, moving forward, the team is excited to finally repair these unsightly areas and bring our fairways back to the conditions you have all come to expect and enjoy.

A few additional updates with in-house projects:  Over the next couple of weeks, the maintenance team is going to re-sod the approach of Hole 4 on the Sechrest.  The Clubhouse parking lot planting was recently completed. We are working on a few pathways in the area to make

walking through the parking lot more manageable.

 Azaleas behind 16 Green were recently planted.  We are working on a non-slip product to cover the walking bridge to 18 Green. Recent granite path has been

installed but we still have some follow-up work to complete in this area.

I’ve been asked recently about our native areas. As discussed in previous updates, the native areas will take several years to truly mature. This spring, the late rains have hurt us in many areas but have certainly been beneficial to our natives.

We have done extensive mowing to the natives so we can understand and manage weed suppression and control. Spray applications will continue in these areas for this exact reason. We actually map out our thin areas so this fall we can focus on additional seeding, as needed. With a record-breaking wet spring, the weeds have grown exponentially. Also, moving forward, we will only mow isolated areas and thus allow other areas to grow to their intended height. As you will notice from the pictures on the next page, we have made great strides in establishing a good stand of turf in many of the native areas. This will be ongoing.

Lastly, a reminder about the cart rules for 2019 that we discussed in June’s newsletter. Please adhere to those directions as it will help us mitigate any unnecessary damage to the course. Again, we anticipate keeping carts on paths for Holes 3, 18 and all par 3’s on the Tom Watson and Hole 4 and the par 3’s on the Sechrest. This is your course so whether it’s cart traffic control or fixing ballmarks, please hold yourself and others accountable and work together to keep it in the best possible condition. These simple guidelines will make such a difference. Thank you.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the TAKE Self-Defense Training Program on May 30th. The program opened with a few words from the father of Ali Kemp, a 19-year-old Leawood, Kansas woman who was murdered. The impact of hearing what the parents went through and have since done to honor Ali’s legacy brought tears to everyone’s eyes.

For the past 14 years, this program has trained more than 68,000 women, ages 12 and older.

The 34 women who participated at The Country Club at Loch Lloyd, learned several handson self-defense techniques from the program director, Jill Leiker. We can’t thank Jill enough for putting on such an outstanding, helpful and very informative program.

We took a few photos during the class instruction, shown below. It is our hope to offer this program again in the future so that more Loch Lloyd women will know what to do to in order to protect themselves. Stay safe and have a wonderful July!

It hardly seems possible that July is here already! We’ve been planning for our Fourth of July celebrations and have a great line-up of events including our Bourbon & Bacon Fest on July 2nd, Rockin’ BBQ on the Event Lawn followed by FIREWORKS on July 3rd and our popular Pancake Breakfast on the 4th of July. It’s an exciting and busy time for the Club and we hope to see many of you join us for the festivities!

In addition to our Independence Day activities, we have other exciting events planned this month including another installment of our Men’s Happy Hour, a Ladies’ Happy Hour “Road Trip” and a wine-blending party during which you’ll create your own wine. Details of all of these events may be found in this issue. As always, we appreciate your advance RSVPs so that we may plan and staff accordingly.

You may have noticed the new mounted television as you enter the Clubhouse main entry.

We will use this television to highlight events, post photographs, welcome bridal parties and special guests, and keep you updated on Club happenings. We think it is a great addition to our Clubhouse and are pleased to have yet another way to communicate with you.

His work with spirits and cocktails has been featured on KSHB Kansas City Live, the Pitch Weekly, the Kansas City Star, and 435 Magazine. Pierpont’s in Union Station, Tannin Wine Bar and Kitchen, and James Beard Awarded Extra Virgin are among the establishments that have counted on his services.

Currently, this Certified Sommelier is working as the Midwest Brand Development Manager for Altamar Brands, LLC. If you spot him in your neighborhood bar, say hi. He’ll probably buy you a drink!

Under the tutelage of John “Edge” Edgerly, a 40-year veteran in the wine and spirits industry, you’ll engage in a fun, interactive discussion about wine, pairing, tasting and blending, while performing a series of flavorful experiments to create YOUR perfect wine!

Bring your spouse, BFF or fellow wine lover as we’ll work in pairs. Each duo will use (and take home) a Blendtique’s Signature Blending Kit, which contains everything you’ll need to experiment with the kit’s four premium half bottles of wine. One of these kits will be on display in the Clubhouse lobby so be sure to stop by and check it out. We’ll record our “formulas” so that once you design your perfect wine, you may order a case of it if you’d like. Blendtique also offers services such as creating your own bottle label — perfect for weddings, receptions and parties. (You may have seen Blendtique on ABC’s Shark Tank!)
