What is therapeutic education?

Five Rivers

For over 31 years Five Rivers has been at the forefront of developing and informing practice around what works in turning children’s lives around.

Our therapeutic model represents an evidence based responsive and sensitive approach to addressing the impacts of adversity experienced by many children.

At the core of our service is the understanding that, for children, development occurs in the context of relationships.

Our primary focus is to help children come to terms with areas of their young lives where they have experienced marked difficulties and trauma. Through our offer of therapeutic educational programmes we aim to help children fulfil their potential, relate well to others and enjoy life.

A flexible and responsive approach

The strength of our service lies in its experience, flexibility, understanding and responsiveness. We take referrals for placements from Local Authorities and schools.

We offer part time placements that are flexible to meet the needs of the child. This can include supporting the child through stressful situations or a period of imbalance by

teaching new problem-solving approaches and coping strategies through timely interventions by specially trained and experienced staff.

The Attachment and Trauma Sensitive Schools Award (ATSSA)

The Attachment and Trauma-Sensitive Award validates schools that demonstrate a culture of compassion and nurture, fundamental components for getting children into a state of ‘learning readiness’. The award is issued only to providers who can demonstrate they have met its rigorous quality standards.

Our offer A holistic approach

Five Rivers adopts a holistic therapeutic approach that considers and addresses emotional, cognitive and social development together with stages tailor-made to meet the needs of the child.

Within this service we work with children aged 5–11 years.

Our other services support children and young people aged 6–19 years. Our specialist therapists, teachers and support workers help to develop the whole child. Our holistic approach boosts confidence, self-esteem and helps children develop skills to become more resilient, cope with change, get along with others, adapt to new environments, regulate their emotions and develop self-efficacy.

Our therapeutic educational offer

We offer bespoke individual therapy and educational programmes to meet the individual needs of the child. We have found that children respond best to an integrated and seamless experience that supports them develop emotionally, academically and socially. Our approach to therapeutic education is to work with local authorities, schools, parents and guardians to reduce exclusions and improve the experience of children and to offer interventions for children in care and on the edge of care.

Relationships

Many of the children we have worked with have had turbulent life experiences at home, school or in care. We understand that when the environment becomes predictable it calms and supports children. Achieving self-esteem is the first step towards making progress.

Our therapeutic approach is based on building trust and relationships, the vital foundations for emotional growth, learning and development. Our teams provide a warm and consistent environment where children develop positive behaviour, using therapeutic techniques.

Our most valuable resource is our people

Each child has a team of highly trained and skilled professionals who create a network around the child. We recognise the balance between creating safety and security whilst avoiding over dependency.

Our other services Our education provision is fully integrated with other services

Assessment & Therapy: We formulate our individually tailored education plans with input from our team of clinicians. They support the children as they experience therapeutic intervention and prepare them for any transitions in care or treatment.

Crisis Intervention: Children undergoing a crisis must have educational support. 1 ACE provides a familiar, stable base, creating the foundations for rebuilding self-esteem through step-by-step success.

Education: A pivotal part of Five Rivers fundamental services. A passport to the future. 1 ACE is an education

provider in the community; a school without walls. It offers a bespoke, trauma informed education that challenges children to learn in all directions and supports them every step of the way.

Fostering: Children in the care of our fostering service can receive tailored one to one educational support through our 1 ACE outreach service.

Residential: Children in residential care have access to onsite registered schools or receive tailored one to one support through our 1 ACE outreach service.
