TOM & HEATHER TUCKER Richard Adams Leadership Award

Heather and Tom have always loved children. As President of Holiday House summer camp on Long Island, Heather inspired Tom’s decision to start a camp to help kids in the New York area who needed support. They ultimately built a camp on beautiful property in upstate New York near Colgate University, Tom’s alma mater. Over time, Tom realized that a year-round program was needed to have the greatest impact on the children they served at the camp.

Working with the board and staff, Fiver was transformed into a year-round youth development program in the early 2000s. The revised model has had a remarkable impact on the children it serves.Heather graduated from Beaver College in 1968 and worked as an elementary school teacher in Manlius, not far from the future home of Camp Fiver. After graduating from Colgate University in 1967, Tom joined the navy. In 1977, he joined Lehman Brothers and worked there for 19 years until retiring in 1996 as an Executive Vice President. Heather and Tom have three children and 7 grandchildren.

THE HASPEL FAMILY Richard Adams Leadership Award The Haspel family has been an integral part of Fiver’s development since its very inception. Ira Haspel volunteered to be the architect of the new camp buildings, and his late wife, K.K., a builder, offered to oversee and coordinate construction. K.K. and Ira became founding Board members, remaining involved with the expansion and maintenance of Camp Fiver’s impressive facilities.

Ira has retired from architecture, but continues to run the organic and biodynamic farm that he and K.K. started on the North Fork of Long Island in 1999. K.K. passed away in 2014 and is being honored posthumously. Max Haspel (Colgate ’95) and his wife, Gaby, attended the opening of Camp Fiver in 1999, and Max has been an active member of the Fiver family ever since. First a part of the Young Professionals Committee, followed by service on the Advisory Council and Board of Directors, Max recently joined Ira as an Emeritus Member of the Board. Max is a partner and member of the executive leadership of The Colony Group, a Barron’s Top RIA fiduciary-only wealth management firm that takes a holistic, virtual family office approach to serving entrepreneurs and executives, professionals, active and retired professional athletes, and artists and entertainers.

Ushery won a New York Emmy® in 2019 for his profile on 9/11 responder Michael Dorian, who was diagnosed with cancer following his service and later fought a challenging battle to secure the health benefits due to him under the law. Later that year, Ushery conducted one of the last televised interviews with the late NYPD Detective Luis Alvarez, who helped lead the grassroots campaign which resulted in renewal of the federal Victim’s Compensation Fund.
