THE POWER OF PROTEIN Within the human body, skeletal muscle proteins are constantly being synthesised and broken down. The rates of which vary depending upon the individual, dietary protein intake and exercise. As a baseline, for sedentary individuals, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day (, however highly active individuals incur greater rates of both muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and muscle protein breakdown (MPB); as such, an exercisers’ protein intake should be increased. This is particularly important for individuals who desire an increase the muscle size. For these people, dietary protein intake should be between 1.5 to 2 of protein (Kreider et al., 2010). To support muscle growth increasing the protein intake is only part of the story; due to digestion and protein absorption into the muscle, protein amounts are limited. At any given meal or snack, exercisers should consume between 20-40g of protein regularly throughout the day (every 2-3 hours) as the optimal way of stimulating muscle protein synthesis and therefore recovery and physical adaptation (Tipton et al, 2009).

An advanced high-protein flapjack This great tasting flapjack bar is a convenient way of increasing your dietary protein, carbohydrate and creatine intake. Progain flapjacks are low glycemic, a source of fibre and contain probiotics for digestive health, as well as being lower in both sugar and fat than normal flapjacks. Progain flapjacks are great to keep in your gym bag for when food is required but getting the right type of whole food is awkward or limited. Each 90g flapjack contains 328 kcals with 24g of protein, 41.9g of carbohydrate and 8.7g of fat.

Progain flapjacks contains 24g of protein from a blend of milk protein isolate and whey protein concentrate which helps to contribute to daily protein requirement of someone trying to increase muscle mass.

CREATINE Creatine is a derivative from three amino acids (arginine, glycine and methionine) and is stored in skeletal muscle (approximately 95%). Creatine monohydrate is the most extensively studied and clinically effective ergogenic aid used in nutritional supplements in terms of muscle uptake and ability to increase high-intensity exercise capacity. Creatine supplementation provides support for high intensity repeated bout exercises by a rapid replenishment of the immediate

energy source, Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) (Buford et al., 2007). Essentially, supplementation has been shown to allow exercisers to increase work output, whether that be high intensity repeated sprints or repetitions of a heavy weight.

OATS Rolled oats provide a sustained release of carbohydrate (energy) as opposed to sugars which result in an immediate energy hit and fluctuating blood sugar levels. Avoiding peaks and troughs in blood sugar levels is important irrespective of the training goal, this is especially significant in avoiding health complications, such as diabetes later in life. The inclusion of oats contributes to Progain Flapjacks having a low glycemic index and hence the sustained release. Each Progain flapjack contains 41.9g of carbohydrate ideal to have after a hard workout or as a snack mid morning or afternoon.

PROBIOTICS Probiotics are a group of beneficial bacteria that enhance the health of the digestive system and have been shown to enhance immune function (Jensen et al., 2010). For those trying to increase muscle, the calorie intake needs to be greater than your energy output, meaning more food is going through the digestive system. Helping your digestive system will increase the efficiency of your body’s ability to use nutrients you consume.

FIBRE There are two different forms of fibre - soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibre, found in foods such as, oats, fruits and root vegetables, helps the human body to absorb nutrients and good elements from food. Insoluble fibre, found in foods such as wholemeal bread, bran and cereals, helps the body to move the waste and harmful materials from the digestive tract. Insoluble fibre also absorbs water, expanding your digestive tract and filling your stomach, increasing the feeling of satiety. Each Progain flapjack (90g) contains 3.1g of fibre.
