Happy May! While we typically associate this time of year with blooming flowers and the exciting anticipation of vacation season, May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, an opportunity to raise awareness for those living with mental health issues. We also hope to help reduce the stigma that so many people experience because our mental health is the most important part of living a healthy life. It determines how we make everyday decisions, how we relate to others and how we handle stress, and it has a clear connection to our physical health. Whether you see a person exercising or going to see their therapist, there should be no difference on how they are viewed. It is all a part of caring for a person's overall health.

We would like to give a huge CONGRATULATIONS to our mental health contributor, Phylice Kessler, for recently becoming a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. This month, Phylice assures us that we are not alone and that it is OK to speak up about our real feelings and end the stigma that surrounds mental health care! Read the article on page 18.

I have been a trainer for a little over 10 years and currently work with clients as young as 18 and as old as 93 (but I accept clients of all ages). I have been a resident of the beautiful city of Weston since 1994.

Along with my in-person clients, I train clients online though my very own online coaching app that I launched in September of 2021. Here I make personalized workout and nutrition programs for clients of all different fitness levels.

My training programs place an emphasis on resistance training and also include some cardio and HIIT. Along with customized programs, clients get access to mental health tips and a community of like-minded people on a similar journey.

I have also been the official trainer on WPLG Local 10's popular health, lifestyle, and fitness show- SoFlo Health for the past 4 years.

35th Annual FHVLegal.com Rotary Golf Classic Raised $150,000 Towards the Rotary Club of Weston Scholarship Fund

n April 1, 2022, 148 golfers enjoyed 18 holes of golf and a luncheon at the 35th annual FHVLegal. com Rotary Golf Classic hosted at The Club at Weston Hills in Weston in Florida. Each year, this event raises funds for the Rotary Club of Weston Scholarship Fund, which supports local high school seniors who wish to attend college. This year, the event raised $150,000.

As a continuation of its ongoing dedication to the local community, Fort Lauderdale-based law firm Freedland Harwin Valori Ryan, PL (FHV) served as the Title Sponsor for the 15th consecutive year. XO, one of the largest and most well-respected private aviation companies in North America, was a major sponsor.

It is important to the Rotary Club of Weston to support the young members of the community as they further their education.

Talent Agency Founder Focuses On His Clients’ Wellbeing, Not Just Their Careers

M

ichael Raymond is not your ordinary guy. Born and raised in Weston, Florida, this exceptionally accomplished man has managed to establish his own successful talent agency while earning a law degree from the University of Miami, all by the age of 25.

Michael is the founder of Raymond Representation, a sports and talent agency that covers the NBA, gymnastics, football, soccer, and other sports on the collegiate and professional level. Because his mission is to “build entrepreneurs and leaders through the business of sport and entertainment,” Michael focuses well beyond raw athletic talent.

Realizing how important social media platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram are to his business, he represents a variety of powerful influencers. As Michael says, “We are not a traditional sports agency, and that’s what separates us.”

I sat down with Michael to get a deeper understanding of his business.

Michael, you are so impressive. Tell me a little bit about your background and how you got into this industry.

I grew up in Weston, Florida, and I loved it! My parents settled in Weston over 30 years ago and created a very comfortable life for my brother and me. I can honestly say I had an amazing childhood with very supportive parents, a great education and so many opportunities. My parents are both entrepreneurs. My father started in commercial real estate and is currently in property management while my mother owns a high-end clothing store in Miami called From Collars to Cuffs. They both encouraged my brother and me to work hard and follow our dreams.

I graduated from UCF’s sports business program. Always a sports enthusiast, I knew I wanted to do something in that capacity; I just wasn’t sure what. I had some amazing mentors while in college and that really helped to pave my current path.

Well, you have created quite the business and have found a way to separate yourself from the rest. Tell me more about your business and how you are different.

Raymond Representation is a sports and talent agency built on creating leaders, connecting with the community and establishing win-win relationships.

When creating the company, I knew I wanted to be more than just a sports agent. I have a big personality and I’m an avid believer in the idea that building genuine relationships is the key to success. This is why I have surrounded myself with brilliant mentors and a great team.

When we are working with athletes and influencers, we are constantly attending networking events, appearances, social events and, most importantly, we are interacting with their families. The connections made with the families of our talent is priceless. A family is usually the greatest support system one has, so trust and confidence must be established with family members. I really feel this is something that sets our team apart.

No doubt that these relationships are so important. In addition to this, you also mentioned that mental health is important in your business.

Yes. I take a lot of time to focus on mental health. The industry in general is high pressure. As agents, we are expected to “be on” and sell ourselves constantly. As an athlete, there are obvious pressures to perform and deliver constantly. I take the time to educate my athletes, influencers and team to take time for themselves.

There is always time to step away and workout, mediate, spend time with family or just be alone.

For me, work is fun. I work hard and deal with stress just like everyone else, but I do my best to stay positive. I believe in balance, so I take the time to work out, spend time with my family and allow myself to take some time away from my day to day grind. I have other passions as well, such as cars. Although it is only a hobby for me now, I’ve spent years working on custom cars. I even started an auto club in high school where I organized large car shows.

You really are an inspiration, Michael.

Accomplishing what you have by the age of 25 is amazing. After speaking with you, I know this is only the beginning. Any final words of encouragement for our readers?

Be your own hero. Be the one who makes a difference. Be the one who inspires your family to do great. Be the one who elevates 14

everyone around you. Be the one who motivates your friends when they are down. Be the one who inspires change.

Cauliflower Pizza Crust Recipe

P

izza is one of those meals almost everyone can agree on. However, if you are looking for a healthy option or have made the switch to gluten-free, cauliflower pizza crust is a fantastic option.

This Paleo cauliflower pizza crust recipe is the best wheat-free base I have tried and easy to make.

Ingredients: • • • • • •

1½ pounds cauliflower 1 egg ½ cup grated Parmesan 1 tablespoon arrowroot starch 1 teaspoon garlic powder Pinch of salt

Ingredients Details: • Cauliflower: It’s a low-calorie base that’s also high in micronutrients like vitamin C, vitamin K and folate.

• Arrowroot starch: To keep this recipe gluten-free, arrowroot starch is used in place of regular flour. It’s high in potassium, iron, magnesium, and B vitamins, which makes it great for aiding digestion and boosting immunity.

1. Heat the oven to 400 Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Chop the cauliflower into medium pieces and place on the baking sheet. Bake the cauliflower for 25–30 minutes, until it’s golden brown.

3. Remove the cauliflower to a cooling rack and place in the refrigerator to cool completely.

4. Once the cauliflower has cooled, process it into rice-sized pieces in a food processor or high-powered blender.

5. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk the egg well. Add the rice cauliflower, cheese, starch, garlic powder and salt and mix well.

6. Line the baking sheet with a new piece of parchment paper. Pour the mixture onto the baking sheet and spread it into an oval or rectangle shape so that the crust is about 1/2–3/4 of an inch thick.

7. Bake at 400 for 35–40 minutes, until golden brown. Add your favorite toppings and return to the oven for 5–10 minutes.

fter spending the better part of three decades as an athlete and major fitness enthusiast, life found many opportunities to get in the way of taking care of myself so that I could in turn take care of those around me. I found myself constantly trying new programs by the latest guru or working with new coaches but it usually left me frustrated as most of the programs were written or led by Internet fitness pros whose sole function in life was looking and living healthy. So needless to say they lacked relevance and applicability to my life these days plus I knew what I also needed was connection with other dads like me.

I am a husband, father of two toddlers and I run two businesses. With less time it is easy to skip out on "me time" but I knew with my growing responsibilities I needed to make my health a priority. I started to write the programs and nutrition advice that work for me and fit into my busy lifestyle. I knew there had to be more dads looking for something similar. I also knew that with my new responsibility to raise the next generation of men and women it was crucial for me to be a good role model and example for my kids. I couldn’t let “busy'' get in the way.

Here are 5 tools to utilize to improve your mental health:

1. “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Reduce your time on social media.

Looking at social media will make you think everyone is having a better life than you. In fact, most social media posts are everyone’s “highlight reels.” People show you want they want you to think their lives are like.

We don’t really know what is happening in their real lives.

ow are you? No really, how are you? Don’t say “good” or “great”, because that’s just “B.S.”! In the last couple years, we have experienced a global First Chakra crisis. What does that mean? First chakra has to do with foundation, stability, home, family, and support. With Covid, political divide, racial injustice and now war, our foundation is not just on shaky ground, it has crumbled beneath us.

This crisis has impacted everyone from the oldest to the youngest. So, I ask you again, “How are you?”

Not so good, are you? Okay, guess what, you’re not alone. 450 million people currently suffer from a mental illness, according to a report published by the World Health Organization. 1 in 4 Americans currently suffers from at least one mental illness. Suicidal ideation continues to increase and the growing percentage of youth in the U.S. who live with major depression or anxiety is also on the rise. Rates of substance use are increasing in youths and adults and there have been more overdose deaths last year than Covid deaths.

So, now what? We need to connect, talk about our REAL feelings, and ask for help. We have to end the stigma.

2. “You are the sum average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.” Surround yourself with people who are uplifting and positive. Be around people who are supportive and understanding. Find people who can honestly help you when you need someone to talk with.

3. “Move a muscle change a thought.” Do something active. Take a walk, do yoga, exercise, swim, dance or cycle. When we move our bodies we reduce endorphins, “happy hormones” that naturally increase our moods.

4. “Check yourself before you wreck yourself.” Sit down with your feelings and emotions. Write them down. Mediate on them. Try to look at them from a different perspective. Maybe there is an opportunity in that obstacle or a possibility in that problem. Try to look at your situation with a different mindset.

5. “Illness begins with the word I. Wellness begins with the word We.” You are not meant to handle it alone. Reach out for help. Speak to a professional. Seeking help is a sign of strength — not a weakness. And it is important to remember that treatment is effective. Be Gentle with Yourself As You Navigate Through Your Motherhood Journey

otherhood is so beautiful, and so messy. Mothers carry the weight of the world on their shoulders and it can get heavy. As a mother I express so much gratitude for the things I have, for this life I'm living, that I once prayed for.

As a mother I get tired, and I get frustrated and overwhelmed.

There are some days I run to the bathroom to cry where no one can see me. There are days where I stand in the shower, emotionless, tapped out, just trying to catch my breath. I am a woman, I am a wife, I am a mother, and I am human.

Just because you may feel negative emotions inside motherhood does not mean you love your baby less or that you are less of a mother. It just makes you human. It's okay to have bad days, and if you're having a lot of bad days, it's okay to ask for help.

Society has this stigma surrounding mothers' and their mental health. Many mothers sit and suffer in silence for fear of being

scrutinized. I want you to know that you’re not alone mama.

That there are other mothers all around the world feeling the same way you are.

Motherhood isn't always pretty and that's good! You are meeting life honestly and courageously. Motherhood is growing as a mother as your child grows.

Exercise Not Only Improves Your Body, It Also Improves Mental Health “Mens sana in corpore sano”…

So said the Roman poet Juvenal around the year 100.

Although his intentions were not to associate the benefits of exercise on the human body, he unwillingly created a maxim that motivates most exercise and fitness enthusiasts around the world nowadays.

Exercise has historically been associated with physical health. On the contrary, its positive effects on mental health (stress release, better sleep, high self-esteem and enhanced sense of well-being and pleasure), have only recently been studied and confirmed.

Even moderate amounts of exercise safely performed, have been shown to be beneficial in both managing and/or preventing many of the symptoms associated with clinical depression, anxiety, ADHD, and PTSD. May 2022

Some of the mechanisms through which exercise is thought to help manage these conditions are: Distraction - By keeping our minds (and bodies) occupied in an exercise activity we enjoy - be the gym, jogging, canoeing, etc. -, we help maintain a healthier mental state.

Self-Efficacy - Participating, completing and reaching the desired goals of an exercise program, gives the individual self-confidence, self-efficacy and a sense of accomplishment which are strong psychological tools against depression.

Thermogenics - After exercising, the body’s temperature rises (including the brain’s) and can lead to better relaxation and reduced muscular stress.

Adult Neurogenesis - Exercise has been proven to help the adult brain create new neurons in the hippocampus area. This area is implicated in the learning and memory processes, as well as in affective behaviors. β-Endorphins Release - Exercise helps the release of β-endorphins, which are not only associated with pain reduction but also with positive changes in mood and/or reduced feelings of depression.

Neurotransmitter Release - Exercise is also thought to help the release of neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, etc.), which are known to be lowered by depression and anxiety.

or May, we venture to Union Island in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. A tiny Caribbean Island just 3 miles long and about a mile wide, with approximately 3 thousand residents. If you’re looking for under-the-radar destinations, this is the spot for you. Due to its dramatic silhouette—lush rainforest, mountainous landscape, and azure waters, Union is also considered the Tahiti of the West Indies.

As usual, the first things I pack before heading to this paradise, or any trip, are my wellness products.

Here Are A Few Of My Favorite Travel-Inspired Wellness Tips: Dewy Skin: Flying can wreak havoc on your skin—the dry cabin and recycled air leave your dermis parched and dehydrated. You can hydrate your skin on the inside by drinking ample amounts of water and staying away from caffeine. But to quench your skin on the outside, make sure to add drops of hyaluronic acid to your moisturizer. Don’t get thrown off by the word “acid”, it’s actually one of the best beauty products you can use to lock in moisture and plump up your skin so that it appears more youthful. I’ll often even add some to my SPF. Your skin can never be too moisturized or too protected.

Bye, Bye Bloat: I may lose my wings for giving away this flight attendant's secret! There’s nothing worse than bloating. It’s a common side effect of travel that is also referred to as “jet belly”. Is there a remedy? Yes, there is! First, you must stay away from carbonated drinks and snack on apples for the fiber. Also, taking probiotics gives your digestive system the boost it needs while it’s constantly adjusting to the cabin pressure. Next, make sure to take a peppermint oil supplement, it works as an antispasmodic. And lastly, ginger tea, preferably hot, to calm inflammation and soothe your GI tract.

Relax, You’ve Got This: Flying can be stressful, so what I do to relax and get comfortable once in my seat is spray some essential oils on a wrap that I can wrap around me and smell in flight. I love using lavender oil, eucalyptus, or Ylang Ylang. You can also bring a travel-sized bottle of essential oils to dab onto pressure points.
