Greenwich town centre

Royal Observatory Greenwich 1 The Royal Observatory, designed by Sir Christopher Wren was completed in 1676. The Prime Meridian of the World, zero longitude, is marked in the courtyard, where you can stand with a foot in each hemisphere. See John Harrison’s clocks, which helped solve the puzzle of longitude, the Greenwich Time Ball, London’s only Planetarium and the laser which brightly illuminates the Meridian Line after dusk.

National Maritime Museum 2 The National Maritime Museum opened in 1937. Its collections include the coat that Admiral Lord Nelson was wearing at the Battle of Trafalgar when he was fatally shot. There are some great interactive exhibits for kids and adults alike. Four new galleries tell the stories of global explorers and their encounters with people, places and environments across the world’s oceans.

Queen’s House 3 The Queen’s House was the first classical building in England. You can see art by J.M.W. Turner, Joshua Reynolds, William Hogarth and the Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I here. Architect Inigo Jones was influenced by the Italian style and built the House over the main road so the Queen had access to both Greenwich Park and the old Tudor palace.

Cutty Sark 4 Cutty Sark is the last surviving tea clipper and, for a short time in the 19th century, she was the fastest ship in the world. Find out what a sailor’s life was like in the great age of sail. You can walk underneath the beautiful copper hull, meet character actors and stay late for theatre, music and comedy shows.

Old Royal Naval College 5 The Old Royal Naval College was designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1692 as a home for retired British seamen. The atmospheric grounds and courtyards contain some of the most inspiring architecture anywhere in the world. The site is home to the Painted Hall, the Chapel of St Peter and St Paul, a glimpse of the original Tudor palace and the Victorian Skittle Alley.

The Painted Hall 6 The incredible ceiling at the Painted Hall took 18 years to complete and has been brought back to radiant life following a major conservation project. An epic 18th century masterpiece, known as the UK’s Sistine Chapel, tickets include talks and tours throughout the day, hands-on exhibits, use of a multimedia guide and free kids activities.

Greenwich Market 13 London’s favourite market was established by Royal Charter in 1700 and originally sold fruit, vegetables and livestock. It’s a covered market and nowadays it’s packed with arts, crafts and all sorts of fashion and food. The Market has recently been restored and is the buzzing centre of Greenwich shopping life.

St Alfege Church 14 St Alfege Church is at the heart of Greenwich town centre and open to visitors daily. There has been a church here for over a thousand years, dedicated to Alfege, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was martyred by Vikings on this site in 1012. The present church is nearly 300 years old and was designed by Nicholas Hawskmoor.

Greenwich Park Greenwich Park is a Royal Park and was first enclosed in 1427. There are fantastic views across London from the top of the hill. Deer were introduced to the Park for hunting by Henry VIII in the 1500s. Nowadays they live in a hidden wilderness surrounded by squirrels, on the edge of the spectacular Flower Garden.

Roy Llowarch

The Fan Museum 11 One of the most fascinating and unusual museums in the UK, the Fan Museum holds a world-renowned collection of fans and fan leaves. Situated in two beautiful red-brick Georgian houses opposite Greenwich Theatre, the Museum holds an ongoing series of themed exhibitions which complement the permanent displays.
