Fitchburg State University’s welcoming community, driven faculty, and athletic environment have been helping me figure out who I am and where I want to be! Throughout my time here, I’ve had many opportunities to engage in meaningful classes, been given resources to help me succeed, and met some amazing people along the way.

College was something I had been looking forward to from a very young age, but I didn’t decide until my senior year of high school that I would attend here. Little did I know that would be the best choice of my life. Being a student athlete, my schedule tends to be a little busier than most. With that being said, by having smaller class sizes, I really get to know my professors and they get to know me. It’s nice knowing that my professors always have my back and are invested in my goals and successes. Whether it’s an 8 AM or 3 PM class, I’m always excited to learn. The professors’ kindness and understanding are something I hold very dear.

Here at Fitchburg State, I have discovered the vision I have for my future self, and it’s all thanks to this community, campus, coaches, friends, and professors. I have never been to a place that has made me feel this at home, and I can promise this school is making me into the person younger me would be proud of. As you go through your college years, my advice would be to get involved, get out of your comfort zone, and study hard. Set goals for yourself, and here at Fitchburg, everyone is willing to do anything to make that happen!

A Future Full of Possibilities

WE ARE REWRITING THE RULES OF COLLEGE PRICING!

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

Choosing where to go to college wasn’t easy for me. I knew I wanted to learn and gather knowledge in the area I was going to work most of my life, but I wasn’t completely sure what direction to take. Being an international student added another layer of challenges; there’s the distance from home, the legal paperwork, and the constant question of whether you’ll feel like you belong. When I found Fitchburg State, things started to make sense.

What stood out right away was how supportive the people here were, from the new friends that I made to my professors, faculty, and staff. Anytime I had questions, someone was there with answers and encouragement. That made a huge difference, because without that guidance, I don’t know if I would have been able to get everything in order on my own. Knowing I had people I could count on made the decision to come here much easier.

Now that I’m on campus, I can honestly say that I feel comfortable with my choice. My professors and classmates have been easy to connect with, and I’ve found that smaller classes really give you a chance to build real relationships with professors, and they are more likely to remember my background and name. Studying Human Services has opened my eyes to the kind of future I want, and having professors who are willing to sit down, talk, and help me plan out those goals has been invaluable.

Outside of academics, I’ve also been able to pursue something important to me: athletics. I’m training for an ultramarathon, and the discipline I’ve built through running carries over into the classroom and every other part of my life. Fitchburg has given me the space to grow in both directions, mentally and physically.

For me, this university has been more than just a place to get my degree. It’s where I’ve found balance, confidence, and comfortability.

At Fitchburg State University, New England residents now pay less in tuition and fees than they would in their own state. Your future is waiting to be built. Located in the heart of North Central Massachusetts, our vibrant campus is where you can explore over 50 career-focused programs and immerse yourself in a dynamic student community. This is everything you’ve been looking for: a top-tier education, a place to belong, and a price that makes it all possible.

Fitchburg felt familiar. The small class sizes, the camaraderie among students, and the ease with which students and faculty interacted attracted me to Fitchburg State University during my interview visit. I went to a similar campus when I was an undergraduate student and like many of my fellow classmates, I was a first generation student (the first person in my family to attend college) from a working class community. At Fitchburg State, I saw myself reflected in many of the students on campus: not only first gen and middle or working class, but also students who were serious about college and eager to learn. I saw students who wanted to give back to their communities post graduation. And I wanted to be a part of this community!

Soon after taking the job and moving here from my home state of Wisconsin, I found that I was correct: Fitchburg State students are growing scholars and future leaders. I am both not surprised and amazed to see our alumni have successes in industry, in governance, and in education. And as a professor of creative writing, I am proud that many of my students have published their writing, or have gotten into prestigious creative writing MFA programs, or work in the professional writing fields such as editing, journalism, and business writing.

Over a decade since my first visit to Massachusetts, I am elated to watch our good regional university grow into a great institution for its students, its employees, its city and the surrounding areas, and New England as a whole. With President Hodge and the entire Fitchburg State University community, I truly feel I fit here!
