PULSE

VIEWPOINT Fitbit has been at the forefront of revolutionising how people exercise for more than a decade. Being able to gather data on steps and day-to-day activities along with training and workouts, you can track how well you’re doing and feel motivated to improve. Being more active has helped millions of people become healthier and Fitbit is constantly looking at ways to support them further.

2

We recognise that health and well-being are about more than hours spent in the gym, or kilometres covered. It’s about all the little things that add up to a healthier lifestyle, from taking the stairs at work, cleaning the house, choosing healthier meals and the importance of rest and relaxation. Fitbit takes a holistic approach to health that will engage the whole family in choosing to move more. We’re exploring news ways develop ever-better features and boost the positive effects of Fitbit for more people. So this year the launch of Ace, our first tracker designed specifically to let kids get in on the Fitbit fun, and a ground-breaking female health tracker on the Fitbit app and smartwatches. As our partners you’re key to helping us communicate this exciting future with our customers. We hope you’re as inspired as we are to see technology transform our daily lives, make a difference and create healthier futures for everyone. By Benoît Raimbault, VP Marketing EMEA Fitbit

WHAT’S NEW IN THE FITBIT WORLD? Newest member2016 of the family

Not content to sit on its laurels, Fitbit has followed the success of its first smartwatch Ionic with the launch of the new Versa in 2018. With a smaller display than Ionic and a rounded aluminium case, it is super lightweight with a greater range of style options, giving it wider appeal for male and female fitness fans. Read more about it on pages 6 and 7.

Ace

Making fitness fun for kids, Fitbit has developed Ace, a showerproof wristband made for ages 8 and over. It tracks and rewards steps, active minutes and sleep to support younger users as they learn the benefits of moving more and getting better quality rest. It’ll be available later this year.

3

Fitbit is excited to announce the launch of one of the company’s most requested features: Female health tracking. Now female users will be able to log their periods, record symptoms and track where they are in their cycles. By potentially creating one of the largest databases of anonymized female health metrics in the world, Fitbit has the opportunity to help drive positive health outcomes and could give Fitbit, healthcare, and research professionals an unprecedented ability to study menstrual cycles and women’s health with real-world data in the future.

THE ALL DAY HEALTH AND FITNESS SMARTWATCH THAT HELPS YOU LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE.

5

THERE’S A NEW SMARTWATCH ON THE BLOCK.

LOOKING GOOD, FEELING BETTER. It’s never been so easy to elevate your look than with the lightweight and water-resistant Versa, a smartwatch that helps you live your best life. While most of us go to the gym because we want to be healthier, it’s difficult to deny that looking fit and toned is a nice added bonus. But, as it turns out, the relationship between form and function might be more of a two way street than you think. Confused? Let us explain...

6

A study at Northwestern University measuring the effect wearing a lab coat had on paying attention found that fashion really does have an impact on psychological processes, coining the term “enclothed cognition” to describe the phenomenon. If you’ve ever had a great workout or run after buying some new shoes, a space age sports bra or a snazzy new fitness tracking smartwatch, it might not be coincidence. It could very well be enclothed cognition in action, with your mind and body stepping up their game because you feel more like an athlete. Looks like there’s some truth to the expression “you should dress for the job you want, not the job you have” after all! With on-screen coaching – including personalised workouts from Fitbit Coach – and 15+ exercise modes to record your activity, Versa can definitely help you dress for the workout YOU want. Whether you’re running, swimming, lifting weights, cycling or *finally* getting your friends together for a gym session, you can use exercise modes to get relevant stats during and after your workouts, or you can rely on SmartTrackTM to automatically recognise and record your exercise.

You can use the Versa to track your heart rate, check your favourite apps or access health insights, all just a tap away. You don’t need to worry about running out of juice halfway through a killer workout, because Versa can always keep up with you. Thanks to its battery life of 4+ days it’s always ready to go... even when life gets in the way and you forget to put it on charge. Want to unplug? Take more than 300 songs with you, no phone required. Then when it’s time to get back on the grid, you can check call notifications, calendar events, text messages and more. However you prefer to work out, take a run or get away with the family, Versa has you covered. If you’re busy at work, Versa will give you a nudge to stay active and make sure you at least take an occasional lap around the office. When it’s you against the world – we’re talking impending deadlines, traffic jams and the kids running wild – Versa can help you to take a little time for yourself and stay calm with a guided two minute breathing session. As at home in the gym as it is in the pub or on the school run, one thing’s for sure: with Versa on your wrist you’ll always look your best, whether you’re burning calories or burning the midnight oil.

Imagine Rocky III without Eye of the Tiger. The Karate Kid without You’re The Best Around. Pretty much ANY Olympics montage without the Chariots of Fire theme song. Easier said than done, right? Some things just go together, and music’s relationship with sports definitely fits that bill. Better still, it’s widely believed that the right tunes can help people push themselves harder for longer. Costas Karageorghis, a researcher at Brunel University, has gone as far as to say that music can be thought of as “a type of legal performance enhancing drug.” A 2012 study at Sheffield Hallam University found that cycling to music requires 7% less oxygen than working out in silence, because the body gets into a better rhythm. Time to re-enroll in that spin class, eh? Just like a metronome, only much more fun.

10

Listening to music while exercising is motivating, but actually getting the tunes out of your headphones can be a drag. If you’ve ditched your old MP3 player, like so many of us have, it’s a pain to have to keep taking your phone out while you’re all sweaty.

DON’T STOP THE BEAT

THE USUAL SUSPECTS

Lineups aren’t just for festivals Alta HR

14

As the name suggests, Alta HR does everything that the Alta does with the addition of heart rate tracking. None of that adds any extra bulk, however, and the Alta HR retains the Alta’s slimline look.

Flex 2 Simple to use and lightweight, the Flex 2 is really well-suited to anyone who wants a fitness tracker that’s minimal and affordable. Because it’s waterproof, it’s also ideal for swimmers...or those who see a lot of rain!

Charge 2

Ionic

Think of Charge 2 as the Alta HR’s older brother. It can do everything that the Alta HR does, with the addition of multi-sport tracking, connected GPS and the ability to measure floors climbed.

Fitbit’s first fully fledged Smartwatch, the Ionic is jam packed with useful features and apps like GPS, music storage and SmartTrack. And because it’s water resistant, you never need to take it off. (Not that you’ll want to!)

Fitbit is undoubtedly best known for our comprehensive range of fitness trackers, with options to suit every style of exercise and every wallet, and all ages. But there’s so much more going on at Fitbit HQ than just fitness trackers. Our growing range of smartwatches, the evolution of Fitbit Coach and even the range of delicious recipes on our blog all speak to that fact. One thing everyone at Fitbit has in common is that we all have a desire to revolutionise the pursuit of health & fitness. The products below, as well as being the perfect complement to building health & fitness routines, represent our passion for making health & fitness easy, accessible and fun.

Ace Small enough for little hands, but tough enough to keep up with all of their hijinks, Ace is built specifically for children. It’s never too early to say no to the sedentary lifestyle and start getting their active minutes up.

Flyer Headphones Wireless, sweatproof and comfortable to wear, music doesn’t get much better than when it’s pumping out of a set of our Flyer fitness headphones. From the gym to the street without missing a beat. 15

Alta With its sleek band and lengthy battery life, the Alta is ideal for anyone looking for a step counter and activity tracker that’s more stylish and functional than a clunky old pedometer.

Versa The latest addition to the Fitbit family, Versa offers most of the Ionic’s great features in a more compact and affordable package. We think you’ll love the woven bands that come exclusively with the Special Edition.

Aria 2 Scale Sometimes a single step can make all the difference. Just hop on the WiFi enabled Aria 2 to measure weight, your body fat percentage and BMI all in one go. It’s steps ahead of your typical bathroom scale.

Understanding your customers’ ‘journey’ and the concerns and questions they have at each stage makes it easier to get under their skin and match them with the right product. After extensive research of shoppers in Germany, France and the UK, Fitbit has put together some useful insights into this ‘journey’ to help you increase sales: Discovery – the influence of others is often the kick-start to thinking about buying a tracker or Smartwatch. For UK shoppers, most had their interest piqued by seeing others using the device, while in Germany and France, the biggest motivator was advertising. With over half of all shoppers starting with a good idea of brand in mind, it’s clear to see what clout those initial motivators have. TOP TIP For partners the message is clear – support positive word-ofmouth and recommendations whenever you can.

TOP TIP Partners can feel confident that Fitbit’s clear, easy to navigate website, great reviews, awardwinning devices and strong reputation as brand leader all support customers’ choice of before they enter your stores. Research – shoppers turn to user reviews, consumer ratings and websites to learn more about products and their features. In Germany 46% were influenced by consumer reviews, 39% by online retail sites and 36% by user reviews. Buying – after all of their research, the actual triggers to purchase can be specific, such as starting a new diet or fitness regime, or reacting to special deals, offers and sales. Across all three countries the choice of retailer is influenced by price, 43%, a favourite store, 40% and convenience, 36%. Coming into store allows the shopper to look, feel and most importantly try on trackers and smartwatches, to see which they like the look of the most. TOP TIP Partners can make the most of this, responding to purchase triggers with clever point of sale (POS) materials, in line with Fitbit’s ‘Moments’ campaign that also aid feature comparison between products. Making sure staff are welltrained to offer informed advice and answer questions and encouraging ‘try-on’ behaviour allows conversion to sales and a happy arrival at ‘journey’s end’ for all.

#FITFORALL Hey, let’s get social!

22

If you’re looking for fitness inspiration then Instagram might just be the perfect app for you. There’s a good chance you already have it on your phone, but you might not have tapped into the power of Insta for your fitness journey. By the end of this article, we think that’ll change and you’ll be saying Instagram #FTW! (that’s “for the win” for any social media newbies) Our favourite hashtags like #fitfam and #fitforall are great for checking out

everything from new moves you can try at the gym to delicious recipes. In our opinion, the best thing about them is that – with the exception of the occasional fitness pro riding the social media wave – you’re looking at real people, rather than heavily airbrushed fitness models. Instagram is also ideal for keeping track of your own progress. It’s easy to document your latest goals using a smartphone, but you risk losing track of your progress pics if your camera roll is at all cluttered. Posting updates to

Instagram is a helpful way to keep it all in one place and, if you feel comfortable, share them with friends and followers. And, of course, and it’s always nice being able to add a flattering filter! We love sharing tips, tricks and killer looks on our Instagram, as well as engaging with our customers in real-time. Hopefully we’ll see you there soon .

MAGIC

MOMENTS

Mark your diary with Fitbit’s in-store campaigns and make the most of every moment. There are few bigger reasons to shed some pounds and shape up than the

24

countdown to a summer beach holiday. The prospect of wearing your skimpies in public may well bring on a cold sweat, but it should be cause for celebration for selling Fitbit devices as the onset of summer is just one of a number of motivators or nudges that push consumers to shop. Fitbit has identified key ‘Moments’ throughout the year that turn browsers into buyers and not surprisingly they often go hand in hand with other peaks in the retail sales calendar. Fitbit’s range of high-impact ‘Moments’ point-of-sale (POS) materials get you onto your customers’ wavelength, grabbing their attention and offering the solution they’ve been searching for. ‘Moments’ can be broken down into three distinct types: Gifting ‘Moments’ occur throughout the year including Christmas, Valentine’s, Mothers’ Day and Father’s Day and on premier shopping dates like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Motivational ‘Moments’ include

the dreaded prepping of the bikini body for summer, New Year’s resolutions and Stepping Into Spring alongside marathon or a sponsored mountain hike. Fitbit inspires its own ‘Moments’ too, with the launch of gotta-have-it new products like Versa and brand partnerships such as Fitbit with adidas. Update and enhance ‘Moments’ in your store with specifically designed POS including roll-up banners, A5 strut cards and wobblers to grab attention and prompt a timely purchase. Try Fitbit’s online digital banners for your store’s website to see on-line sales increase in no time at all too. With the next key date just around the corner there isn’t a ‘Moment’ to lose.

specific fitness motivators like running a

You probably already know that what your customers say they want isn’t always what they really want.

26

You’re an expert at getting to the heart of their needs, asking insightful questions and giving informed responses. Understanding why they make certain choices and weigh up different features will make a significant difference to your overall sales, so make sure all of your team are on board. Consider the female shopper looking for a small, reliable tracker with a pretty-coloured band. Her friend has one just like it and she’s anxious that wearing anything bigger will mark her out as being on a diet or new to fitness. She has no idea - yet - that the new Versa Limited Edition will look stunning on her wrist and that working out to music will inspire her to keep on training every day. She thinks she knows exactly what she wants, until she’s met the entire Fitbit family. To help your team make those introductions that bit faster, Fitbit has spoken to thousands of people looking for wearable tech in the UK, Germany and France, aged 25-55, to understand what influences and motivates them. You won’t be surprised to hear that looks really do matter, its the number one factor in making a choice. With more options on size, face, case and bands than ever before, Fitbit has broad aesthetic appeal. Time-poor, busy people look to others for inspiration. They rely on the word of respected acquaintances, be they friends, trainers or other gym and exercise class-users. If those people are using a particular brand and model and are happy with it, then it’s going to be the first product your would-be shoppers will want to look at and can picture themselves buying. Every Fitbit has the basic features – steps, distance and calories burned – that half of all prospective customers are looking for. It’s the highly covetable additional features that offer the chance to up-sell – remember our example female shopper? She had no idea she needed anything more than tracking, but ended up wanting, and spending, much more and going home happy.

what customers need to know

What does a Fitbit do? All devices are trackers that measure steps and distance. Across the range there are products doing a lot more, incorporating highly sophisticated features that enhance healthy lifestyles and support serious fitness training. How does it measure steps and distance? Walking stride length and running stride length are automatically calculated using height and gender, although you can alter these yourself in ‘Settings’. Distance is calculated by multiplying steps by step length. Can it calculate calories burned? The tracker starts by calculating basal metabolic rate (BMR) using gender, age, weight and height. BMR represents the basic calories needed to perform necessary functions like breathing, heartbeat and brain activity, accounting for around half daily calories. The rest is burned by activity during the day, hence the more you move, the more calories you use.

what they want to know

Is it compatible with my phone and favourite apps? The entire Fitbit range is compatible with 200+ phones including Android, iOS, and Windows, more than any other tracker. With over 2000 apps including Strava, Peloton, My Fitness Pal and Weight Watchers. Can I change the bands and display? Fitbit’s iconic Flex led the field as a small tracker worn within a range of accessories including hand-polished metal bangles, a pendant and the original coloured elastomer bands. Versa’s classic bands have a massive range of choices for case metal and band materials and colours. Ace, Alta, Alta HR, Charge 2, Versa and Ionic all offer customisable display faces too – its your Fitbit, wear it your way.

People often look to others for inspiration

27

How does it measure heart rate? As the heart pumps, capillaries within the skin expand and contract with blood volume changes. LED lights on the back of the tracker reflect onto the skin and to detect these changes, allowing the PurePulseTM Technology to process this information and translate it into accurate heartbeats per minute.

FITBIT ALTA HR The little tracker with the big heart Introduced in 2017, Alta HR is our slimmest heart rate tracker yet, using Fitbit’s PurePulseTM technology to monitor and learn more than ever before about heart rate for optimum results.

28

HOW PUREPULSETM MEASURES AND HARNESSES YOUR HEART RATE With every heartbeat, blood passes through the capillaries making them widen and narrow. Fitbit’s PurePulseTM technology uses a specially designed green LED light to reflect off the skin on the wrist, recording tiny changes in the capillaries and giving an accurate heart rate throughout the day. HEALTHY HEART PurePulseTM makes it easy to see the impact that working out more can have on reducing resting heart rate. This is one of the key indicators of cardiovascular health and keeping it low is important for long term health.

OPTIMISE EXERCISE By tracking heart rate using heart rate zones its easy to calculate how much effort is used during training. Too little? Time to step things up a notch. Too much? Ease off a little. PurePulseTM Technology will monitor and track this in real time. BETTER CALORIE TRACKING Managing weight is all about making sure that calories in are less than calories out. Tracking how hard the heart is working allows a more accurate reading of how many calories are being burned day-to-day.

THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP

LIGHT SLEEP

RAPID EYE MOVEMENT

We spend a third of our lives in bed. The quality of that sleep can affect weight, mental health and has even been linked with Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. But what happens when we sleep? The body cycles through 3 stages of sleep for around 90 minutes, with a good night’s sleep consisting of 5 or 6 cycles. Fewer cycles indicates disturbed or poor quality sleep.

Breathing, heart rate and blood pressure continue to lower, while body temperature starts to decrease. Metabolic functions slow down and this is the stage when the brain processes memory and emotions from the day.

Usually called REM sleep, this is the dreaming phase where heart rate and breathing increase. REM sleep can be repeated multiple times during the night and is essential for regulating emotions and mental restoration.

Fitbit’s Sleep Stages can help track the stages and cycles, prompting improvements for a better night’s sleep.

SLEEP ON YOUR FITBIT DASHBOARD

DEEP SLEEP

Brain waves slow down allowing for continued sleep through slight disturbances, although waking at this stage will usually be disorientating. In this stage the body repairs any damage from physical activity, strengthens the immune system and helps process memories.

Sleep promotes physical recovery and aspects of memory and learning.

To discover your sleep insights and stats, simply tap on the Sleep tile on your Fitbit dashboard. You can track your Sleep Stages, find out how your sleep stacks up against others of the same age and gender on your Insight page and set a Sleep Schedule to follow.

TRAINING

That gets Personal There’s no shortage of workout plans and apps out there that claim to emulate personal training, but the biggest problem with so many of them is that they take a “one size fits all” approach. The issue with this is that one of two things is likely to happen:

30

• You’ll find the exercises listed too difficult or unfamiliar and give up on the plan • In time, exercises will become easier and easier until they’re no longer a challenge Either way, the outcome is that you’re left without a viable workout strategy after a couple of days or weeks. In other words, you end up right back where you started. That’s what we set out to address when we built Fitbit Coach. With everything from basic seven minute bodyweight workouts to hour long outdoor trail runs there’s something here for everyone, no matter what your starting point. If you’re not even sure where to start, Fitbit Coach has got you covered there too. The app will automatically suggest different exercises based on your fitness level by analysing your recent workouts, any goals you’ve set for yourself and other Fitbit activity. The more you wear your Fitbit tracker, the better the suggestions Fitbit Coach makes for you will get. Your workouts adapt and evolve as you progress, so they’ll always be challenging but will always be achievable too. If you’re finding something too difficult, the app will take it a little easier on you next time based on that feedback. Just like working with a real personal trainer you’ll never reach a plateau, so your fitness level will always keep improving.

Google Play

PREMIUM APP & PERSONAL TRAINER

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF YOUR FITBIT

7AM BEDROOM

34

Busy day at the office yesterday, so I was out like a light last night. Still, I can always make time to check out my sleep stages for some valuable insight into how to get a better night’s sleep tonight. Not too bad overall, but looks like I could do with getting a bit more deep sleep. Hello blackout blinds and soundproofing!

10AM OFFICE

I’ve already logged a couple of glasses of water during the morning meeting, but checking the app reveals that it’s time for another trip to the watercooler. Might try to grab a sauna later so I need to stay hydrated, and I’m certainly not going to complain about a chance to get up from my desk to stretch my legs.

12PM GYM

7.30AM BREAKFAST

I’ve got another big day ahead today, so now seems like as good time as ever for a hearty breakfast. I log those calories before I’m out the door to get some nutritional insights for the day ahead, which make for good reading if the train is delayed...again.

I manage to squeeze in a quick workout at lunch, during which SmartTrackTM automatically detects that today’s gym session is all about the stationary bike and a run on the treadmill. I make a note to start prepping my mind (and my legs!) for a heavy squats day tomorrow.

5PM SCHOOL RUN

While hanging around in the car waiting for the kids I have some time to check MobileRun to see what friends and the family have been up to...and to make a note how many miles I’m going to need to grind out to catch them up!

35

1PM LUNCH

There’s no better time for a nice meal out with friends than right after a workout – hey, I’ve earned these macros fair and square. Balancing calories in (a tasty lunch!) with calories out (that lunchtime gym session) is easy with the Fitbit app, so I’ve got no excuses for lingering on my phone.

7PM DINNER

I’m still pretty full after a big meal at lunch, which isn’t a bad thing since a salad will pretty much max out my calories for the day anyway. Once the kids have been put to bed, it’s time to relax with a quick breathing exercise before I see what’s on the TV.

10.30PM BED

I check my sleep schedule is configured and set a silent alarm to build a better routine – I’ve had far too many late nights – and get in a full eight hours of sleep to prepare for the day ahead. Surprise surprise, it’s already looking like another busy one...

FITBIT TIPS FOR

36

EVERYONE

For The Motivated

For Those On The Move

For The Foodie

Fitbit devices have vocal cues that can help you reach your goals. Before starting a run, walk or hike, tap the stopwatch icon, then select Cues and turn on Play During Exercise. You can then tailor which updates you receive: distance, time, average pace, split pace, or calories burned. You can also set how often you hear them, be it by time or distance.

Did you know it’s possible to see all your health data in real time via your Fitbit app dashboard? Simply open your app and allow your tracker to sync with your phone. Once the connected symbol appears, take a few steps and watch your stats respond. It’s now easier than ever to learn about your progress and improve your health.

Fitbit has food databases tailored to specific countries to make logging meals simpler. Going abroad? You can change which country’s food database your Fitbit app searches. From your dashboard, tap the Account icon, Advanced Settings, and then Food Database. Choose the country you’ll be logging from and away you go.

For The Connected

For The Fit Family

Studies have shown that the more you share your progress, the more likely you are to achieve your goals. So whether you passed your personal best, or just had a great workout, spread the word by clicking on the ‘Share’ icon . From there you can choose a background, take a photo, and upload your pic to the Fitbit community or a social network of your choice.

Forgotten your tracker or didn’t charge it? Simply log into the app on your smartphone, click the Account button and choose Set up a new device. Once there, tap MobileTrack and follow the setup instructions. MobileTrack uses your phone’s sensors to track steps, distance, and calories burned. So you’ll never miss a step.
