Police officer injured A POLICE officer needed surgery lasting several hours after he was seriously injured while arresting a suspect. The 25-year-old officer, who has not been named, was taken to hospital after the incident on August 20, which happened on a footpath off Acacia Road leading to the Bristol and Bath Railway Path at the edge of the Hillfields estate. Avon and Somerset police say he suffered "serious facial injuries" and underwent surgery the following day. In their latest update a spokesperson said the officer, who has been on the force for the past three and a half years, was in a stable condition in hospital and awaiting discharge. The incident started when police saw a "suspicious vehicle" outside a Staple Hill building supplies firm at 7pm. The car drove off and was spotted again short time later

in Kensington Road, where the three occupants got out and ran off in different directions, one of them pursued by the officer who was hurt. Superintendent Pete Warren said: “He’s in good spirits despite the injuries he suffered in the line of duty. Thankfully the operation went well. “We’d like to wholeheartedly thank the public for all their support and kind words. It means a lot to the officer, his family and everyone here at Avon and Somerset Police.” Three men, aged 20, 33 and 37, have been arrested suspicion of offences relating to supplying class A drugs and dangerous driving. They have been released while police investigations continue. A quantity of suspected class A drugs, cash and mobile phones have been seized, along with the car.

Lenny off to World Futsal Cup A STUDENT at Bristol Metropolitan Academy will be representing Great Britain in the World Futsal Cup next month. Lenny Johnson will travel from his home in Whitehall to the Spanish city of Barcelona where he will compete in the fast-paced competition. He will be joined by 11 other players, five staff and a qualified referee for the AMF tournament, which takes place from October 30-November 3. The 13-year-old faced tough competition to get into the squad, taking part in trials which were held across the country earlier this year. Futsal is a variant of association football and is played mainly indoors on a hard court, smaller than a football pitch. It is played between two teams of five players, which include the goalkeeper, and the ball is smaller and harder than a normal football. Lenny is already playing regular football at a high standard, having earned a place at Cheltenham Town Academy playing in midfield. Dad Reuben said: “Lenny got into the sport a few years ago through a friend who was playing futsal for Bristol City Futsal (now Bristol Futsal). “He didn't know much about it at the time but loved that it was fast-paced with small sides and involved lots of ball control. He also likes that it's a mix of football and basketball, which is another

sport he plays and has just won the national title with his school team.” Lenny was hooked and was soon playing both types of football to a good standard. “Lenny was futsal training twice a week with games on Saturdays and football training twice a week with games on Sundays – he had a pretty full schedule!” Deciding he wanted to take his futsal career up a notch, Lenny went for trials in Birmingham in April. Because members of the squad come from as far afield as Glasgow, Wigan and Braintree, they only get the chance to train once a month but will hopefully be stepping up practice as the competition gets nearer. Lenny's ultimate ambition is to become a professional footballer, citing his favourite team as Manchester United and player as Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk. Reuben said: “He would love to play for Manchester United, although he loves how strong van Dijk is and thinks he tackles really well.” Reuben said his son was raring to go, looking forward to his latest exciting challenge. “Lenny is really proud to be representing his country and very excited to be taking part in a World Cup. He can't wait to go.”

Bristol Met notches up record results GCSE results are improving at schools in Fishponds and the surrounding area, with Bristol Metropolitan Academy reporting its "best results ever". Teenagers who sat their exams in May and June returned to the school on August 22 to pick up their results. And school principal Cameron Shaw said more than two thirds (67%) of pupils achieved good passes (grade 4 or higher) in both English and maths – up 10% on last year. This year all GCSEs are graded from 1 to a top score of 9, with the previous A* to G ratings phased out over the past two years. Mr Shaw said: "As the new GCSEs continue to embed, we are extremely pleased that we have been able to make significant improvements on our previous strong outcomes. "I am delighted that students at Bristol Met have achieved highly, opening up a range of

opportunities for the future. Supporting our students through this period of their lives has been a challenge met handsomely by our staff and ably supported by our parent and carer body. "Our students must be congratulated for their excellent outcomes, and our wider school community can also take great pride in their achievements, as well as those of their friends

across the Cabot Learning Federation.” At Bristol Brunel Academy in Speedwell Road, 56% of students passed both English and maths at grades 9 to 4 and almost a third (32%) achieved 5 or above in both core subjects. Progress measures across the board are strong, according to Cabot Learning Federation, which runs the school. Principal Jon Jones said: “Students and staff have worked incredibly hard together over the past 5 years to achieve these outcomes. The scale of the academy enables us to offer a broad curriculum and a range of subjects for students to complete. "I feel incredibly proud of what has been achieved and am excited about the next steps these young people will take in their careers. I look forward to welcoming many of our students back to the CLF Post 16 provision

in September. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our parents and carers for their support over their five years with us.” At City Academy Bristol, 46% of students achieved grade 4 or above in both English and maths. The school expected maths progress to be above the national average again. Among the high achievers at the academy was Ikal Warsame, who secured four grade 9s in maths, combined science and photography, as well as a grade 8 in computer science and a grade 7 in English literature and religious studies. After an A* in Spanish last year, Jady Sow Thior gained a grade 9 in religious studies, 8 in combined science and four grade 7s in business, English language, English literature and geography. Principal Jon Angell said: "Congratulations to all students receiving results today at City Academy.

At John Cabot Academy in Kingswood, 70% of pupils achieved a grade 4 or above in English and Maths, with 43% achieving a grade 5 in both subjects. Associate principal Kate Willis said: "I am incredibly proud of our students for their excellent exam results. "They have been rewarded for their hard work and the maturity with which they approached their exams. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the teachers and staff that have supported and guided them so ably to enable our students to reach their potential, and thank parents and carers for their support for our academy, one another and their children over the last five years."

Campaign for pesticide-free Fishponds gains momentum

PUBS, health centres, schools and a student lettings agency are supporting a campaign to turn Fishponds into a Pesticide Free Zone. The campaign, promoted by the Pesticide Safe Bristol Alliance, centres on controversial weed killer glyphosate, which is being withdrawn from hundreds of European cities over its reported links to cancer. The EU came close to banning glyphosate in 2017, and official advice is to “minimise use” in streets, playgrounds and other public spaces. Fishponds is the first postcode in Bristol that the PSBA hopes to turn totally pesticide free, by spreading wildlife and family-friendly weeding techniques to private gardens as well as council-managed land. Bristol City Council recently agreed to work with other major land managers towards phasing out glyphosate, after a petition signed by nearly 4,000 people

was presented to the authority. Harriet Williams, coordinator of the PSBA, said: “When you say air pollution, many people think of traffic fumes. But as we hear from our supporters, pesticide sprays pose a real risk to people, pets and wildlife too. “Pesticide Free Fishponds is about spreading the use of safer alternatives. The response here has been amazing – a number of local businesses are already avoiding glyphosate on health grounds. Our Pesticide Free Zone pledge is a simple way to take action on this important aspect of environmental health – and if Fishponds can do it, so of course can any other suburb of Bristol.” Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy is supporting the campaign. She said: “It’s fantastic to see residents, businesses and campaigners coming together across Fishponds to make it the first pesticide free zone in Bristol.

Taken together with the council’s pledge to stop using harmful pesticides and the recently announced Land Managers Task Force, which aims to collaborate with other major land managers across the city to eliminate the use of glyphosate, I’m positive we can banish these toxic chemicals from our streets and parks by the 2021 target.” UWE Houses does not use glyphosate in gardens of the 40 student houses it manages in Fishponds. Andy Bending, its head gardener and founder of Bristol Organic Gardening, said: “I’ve been practising a chemical free approach to gardening for more than 20 years. We are a nation of garden lovers. Our gardens and green spaces should be places to relax and get away from the pollutates of the city.” Kate Brooks, founder of the People’s University of Fishponds, said: “Finding out about glyphosate or ‘Roundup’ as it is called was really eye opening and

Harriet Williams from from Pesticide Safe Bristol Alliance at the launch worrying – we’re glad to support this campaign.” Eimaer Hawes, landlord of The Star, one of several pubs to have signed its beer garden up as a Pesticide Free Zone, said: “The Star has been developing a wildlife garden for the last few years. It makes no sense at all to be spraying pesticides that kill off wildlife.” Households can sign up their gardens via an online pledge at www.pesticidesafebristol.org.

POLICE are warning shoppers to be vigilant after scammers stole a woman's bank card in a Fishponds supermarket car park. The victim had just visited Morrisons on August 21 when a man approached her and asked her for directions to Southmead Hospital as she was loading her shopping into her car. An Avon and Somerset police spokesperson said the man then asked her to write the directions down and while she was distracted, someone else went in to her car and stole her bank card, which she noticed was missing when she got in to the vehicle. The card was later used fraudulently and it is believed the criminals had watched the

woman as she used it earlier to find out her PIN. The police spokesperson said the victim had seen the man who approached her with another man, pushing around a shopping trolley in the car park, before he approached her. He added: "We would advise people to remain vigilant while out and about shopping and using their bank cards – they should not allow anyone to see the PIN which is being used to pay for goods or withdraw cash, and never leave their bag or bank card unattended." Anyone who has information or thinks they may have been the victim of a similar scam should call the police on 101 and quote reference number 5219 192 257.

Bid to curb rogue landlords Attacks: Man NEW rules to put a brake on landlords turning homes in Fishponds into multi-occupant houses could be brought in by Bristol City Council. The authority is considering introducing legal powers which would give it more control over the conversion of properties into houses in multiple occupation (HMO). Usually a house can be turned into an HMO – where people of different households live together and share facilities such as the kitchen and toilet, such as a student house – without the owner asking the council for planning permission. But so many have been created in certain parts of Bristol that the council is planning to bring in an order known as an Article 4 Direction, which means any owner would have to apply to the authority first before converting a house into an HMO. The new rules would cover the entire length of Fishponds

Road and streets leading off it, plus Mayfield Park, Forest Road and most of Redfield and Lower Easton. The council will bring in the rules from the end of June next year if it decides to go ahead.A consultation was held over the summer, publicised via notices posted on lampposts. It is also considering bringing in the restrictions in several other parts of Bristol. The move comes as the council says it has received nearly £200,000 in government funding for a crackdown on rogue landlords. The authority says it will use the money from the Controlling Migration Fund to step up enforcement action against landlords who exploit vulnerable migrants. Part of the council’s private housing services, the Rogue Landlord Unit works to ensure tenants are made aware of their rights and that their homes are safe to live in and well-managed.

The team also enforces property standards and takes action against illegal eviction and harassment of tenants, as well as dealing with private housing trading standards offences. The council also runs a licensing scheme in areas including Eastville and St George to raise standards of housing rented to private tenants, with inspections to enforce standards and fines for landlords who do no comply. But homelessness charity St Mungo’s has warned that the licensing scheme has had the “unexpected consequence” of eliminating the cheapest rental accommodation in those areas. David Ingerslev, senior service manager at St Mungo’s Bristol, recently told the Bristol Homes Board: “It used to be that along Stapleton Road was where people could find the odd [home] they could afford and now they can’t.” Planning Matters: Page 24

A MAN is due in court to face assault and sexual offence charges after two alleged attacks on women on a cycle path at Mangotsfield. Both incidents took place within half an hour of each other, on the stretch of path which links the Bristol and Bath Railway Path to Pomphrey Hill on the morning of July 21. A 32-year-old man was arrested afterwards and has been charged with two counts of assault by beating and two breaches of a sexual harm prevention order. As the Voice went to print he was being held in custody ahead of an appearance at Bristol Crown Court in late August. Anyone with information about the incidents should call 101 and quote reference numbers 5219 166 474 or 5219 166 466.

A FISHPONDS woman is backing an urgent drive to recruit more volunteers to teach children how to stay safe. Mae Simpson became a volunteer at the Lifeskills Safety Education Centre as a student and has found the work rewarding and fun. Now she is encouraging others to attend a taster session at the Cumberland-Basin-based centre for potential volunteers. The Lifeskills village, which is not normally open to the public, is like a huge film set with 19 different “scenarios”. Green and black boxes - and now blue bags EVERY Bristol home is to get an extra recycling container – a big blue bag just for cardboard. The 90-litre sacks are set to be delivered later this year and the council says they will double the capacity for recyclable materials to be left out for collection. Residents will be expected to put the blue bags out with their green and black recycling boxes, which are collected every week. A spokeswoman for Bristol Waste said: “We know cardboard can be bulky and take up a lot of space in the recycling boxes. We hope the bag will help residents recycle more, saving the city money, increasing recycling and reducing our impact on the environment.” The citywide roll-out follows a trial run in Stockwood earlier this year, and is among measures planned by the city council to reduce waste and improve recycling. Other measures in the pipeline include the removal of any extra black wheelie bins from households with more than the one permitted by council policy, unless there are exceptional circumstances. Each blue sack will come with new stickers for the green and black recycling boxes detailing what items should go in each.

Quarry Court

And plans are afoot to give feedback to residents on how well they are doing with their recycling, for example, using a “traffic light” sticker system. But some councillors have called for a “tougher” approach, suggesting enforcement will be needed to make everyone do their bit to cut the amount of rubbish sent to landfill. Green councillor Martin Fodor endorsed the return of “waste doctors”, which the council used to employ to educate and advise individual residents on how to recycle. Members of Bristol City Council’s communities scrutiny commission have

called for the council to be given enforcement powers to make people recycle properly, after hearing that more than 50 per cent of rubbish in black wheelie bins could be recycled. They said its current strategy depended on "being nice to people" and persuading them to recycle. Ken Lawson, strategic waste client manager, said: “We’re doubling the capacity of recycling by offering the blue sack. “The bins are about 45 litres each. We’ll be giving them a 90-litre blue sack, which will mean that people should be able to reduce the amount they put in their residual bin and increase the recycling.” The local authority is aiming to reduce the amount of residual household rubbish each person creates per year from 200kg to 150kg by 2025. Its target for recycling, re-use and composting is 50 per cent by 2020. A spokeswoman for Bristol Waste said nearly 3,000 extra tonnes of Bristol’s cardboard could have been recycled last year, saving 51,000 trees, 21million gallons of water and 12million kilowatts of electricity and the bags would [pay for themselves within two years. Changes on buses

AN out of school club for children in Fishponds has received a ÂŁ750 donation from a supermarket's community fund. ASDA Longwell Green donated the money from the ASDA Foundation to Oldbury Court Out of School Club to help fund its school holiday lunch club for children.

BUS passengers in Fishponds will be able to reach a new destination and a major employment site from this month. First has announced that, from September 15, both the 48 and 49 services will be extended from Emersons Green to Lyde Green and the Bristol & Bath Science Park. A spokesman said the extension of the 48 and 49 would see six buses per hour going to Lyde Green and the science park but said punctuality and reliability in existing areas on the two routes would not be harmed. Buses would use Willowherb Road to reach the science park from the existing terminus at Sainsbury's in Emersons Green. The spokesperson said: "As the number of occupied houses in Lyde Green has increased and we have reviewed requests

and feedback from customers, we now feel it is the right time to extend Service 48/49 to Lyde Green. There is not expected to be any negative impact on reliability and punctuality, as added resource will be used to allow for this extension." The extension will mean some changes to timetables but the frequency of services to all points on the bus routes will be the same. Once the changes are introduced, the first bus from Fishponds to the science park will be a 49 leaving Channons Hill at 4.49am on weekdays, with the first service in the opposite direction a 48 leaving the science park at 4.10am. The final bus back from the science park will leave at 12.37am, while the final bus to the science park will leave at 12.49am and arrive at 1.16am.

Bristol Energy: concerns remain THE highest-paid director of a council-owned energy company took home close to £250,000 last year, as the firm racked up losses of more than £10 million. The figures were revealed in Bristol Energy’s latest accounts, which came under scrutiny from councillors in August. The director, who has not been named, was paid a total of £242,346 in the 2018/19 financial year, which included an exit package when they left. Bristol Energy reported a loss of £10.1million last financial year, and does not expect to turn a profit for another five years. It is relying on the financial support of the council, which has already spent around £30million to keep the firm afloat. Managing director Marek Majewicz said the company had growing customer numbers and had provided £6.8million worth

of “social value” for Bristol. But members of the council’s overview and scrutiny management board questioned both the pay increase for the highest-paid director and the inclusion of salaries in the calculation of social value. Labour's Mark Brain said: “I would say while we’re having these financial difficulties and we’re having to be propped up by contributions from the council, that pay increases like that for the highest paid director, I don’t think is justified.” Conservative Claire Hiscott said paying someone “approximately a quarter of a million pounds” did not fit with the company’s stated commitment to social value. She said that each Bristol family had given £90 to Bristol Energy this year and received two pence back.

Funding to help tackle violence POLICE and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens has been awarded £1.16m to introduce Violence Reduction Units (VRUs) in Avon and Somerset to tackle serious violence. It follows a proposal by drawn up after the announcement by the Home Office in June, which saw £35m provisionally allocated to PCCs in 18 areas as part of the government’s Serious Violence Strategy. The VRUs, which will be set up in South Gloucestershire, Bristol, North Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset and Somerset, will bring together different organisations including the police, local government, education, health, community leaders and other key partners to tackle violent crime by understanding its root causes. Funding will also be allocated

for prevention and early intervention. PCC Sue Mountstevens said: “This additional funding to go towards establishing VRUs is an important step as part of longer term work to reduce the harm being caused by serious violence. Concerns quite rightly have been growing across the country as we hear of more tragic instances of lives being lost and, in particular, young people both committing and coming to harm. “With this in mind, the VRUs will be tasked with identifying the drivers of serious violence and we will work in collaboration with our partners to develop a co-ordinated response to tackle them. What is so important about this initiative is that it bring a wide range of agencies together – I am clear that the police cannot solve this problem alone.”

Teens arrested over cycle thefts THREE teenage boys have been arrested after a number of bicycle thefts and burglaries. A 15-year-old and a 17-year-old, both from St George, and a 16-year-old from Staple Hill were arrested on suspicion of seven counts of burglary and one count of theft. The 15-year-old and 16-year-old boys were also arrested on suspicion of possession of Class B drugs. The arrests – made on Saturday August 10 – come after an appeal was issued to help locate the owners of the suspected stolen bicycles resulting in owners from Bath, Downend, Hanham, Nailsea, Portishead, Clifton and St George all identifying their bikes. The three boys have been released under investigation and enquiries are still ongoing, reference 5219176642. Officers are currently in the process of the reuniting the stolen bicycles with their owners.

Share a love of reading A NEW group encouraging people in Fishponds to read together is being launched this month. Shared Reading is free and open to anyone, and you don't have to have read a particular book before coming to one of the Tuesday sessions at Fishponds Library in Hockeys Lane. A facilitator selects a short story and a poem, which the group reads out loud and discusses. People can contribute as they wish. Library development officer Denis Wise said: "Shared Reading is a chance to read and listen to great stories, and talk about them. Sometimes we read extracts from the classics, sometimes brand new short stories and there's usually a poem. It's an informal, drop-in group. You don't need to know anything about books or reading to take part and there's never pressure to read." Sessions are 11am-12.30pm, starting on September 10.

n MAYOR'S VIEW

We have to build a city where all can thrive

O

UR city is a great place to be over the summer with free cultural festivals and historical attractions not only bringing citizens but also visitors from across the country and beyond. In the past few months, we have seen engaging and exciting events including St Pauls Carnival, Bristol Pride, the Harbour Festival and the International Balloon Fiesta. But the nights are drawing in and many of us will be going back to school or work after a well-earned break. However, this transition is challenging for some. And knowing how to handle change is critical, especially for our young people. Having worked in the NHS in mental health and wellbeing, this is and continues to be a key priority of mine. Bristol has a higher than national average rate of residents with mental ill health. This is a devastating reality and one that I am not willing to ignore. I want to ensure that we all thrive in a city that supports both our physical and mental health. Part of achieving this is promoting mental health and

wellbeing with a focus on early intervention. Crucially, our schools, colleges and universities must play a role in enabling our young people to grow into resilient and confident adults. Our daily lives may sometimes be stressful. Ensuring young people have skills to cope with this is key to preventing more serious issues in later life. The first steps involve helping them see how to talk openly about their feelings and care for themselves and others. But I will continue to push for improvements to accessing mental health services; promoting and creating positive, fun and challenging opportunities to help children and young people develop their confidence, creativity and resilience. Thrive Bristol aims to improve mental health and wellbeing of all, with a focus on those with greatest need. The programme launched city-wide in 2018 and takes a One City approach to tackling shared challenges. Targets include eradicating mental health

stigma and discrimination, rolling out Mental Health Awareness training, and creating mentally healthy schools, workplaces, homes and communities. In fostering an environment where it is safe to speak about feelings and by building our capacity for resilience, I hope our children of the future and today will find the summer to school transition an enjoyable process.

Trauma teddies LADIES from Fishponds Townswomen’s Guild were rewarded with a day out at a fire station as a thank you for knitting trauma teddies for children in distress. The group knitted 90 bears to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the National Townswomen's Guild. They presented the seven-inch teddies, knitted in a variety of colours, to Kingswood Fire Station so they could be handed to children in need. Jean Keel, from the Guild, said: “We were given a tour of the fire station which included a demonstration of protective clothing which is worn by firefighters. “It made us realise how fit they must be to move around with the safety gear on. “We were also shown all the equipment carried on the engines, the thermal imaging device and also the very large incident vehicles. “The highlight for us was when Nicola, one of the firefighters, drove the fire engine around to the yard where another firefighter called Andy encouraged us to have a go with

a fire hose. “We would like to say thank you to Kingswood Fire Station for giving us a guided tour and making us welcome. Next time you see a fire engine there may be a trauma teddy somewhere on board waiting to give comfort.” Townswomen’s Guild was built on suffragist foundations and continues to empower all women to make their own lives and those of others better. Fishponds Townswomen's Guild was formed in 1936.

n PETER'S VISION

Changing fast

Often the biggest change this time of year is back to school. We’ve no new schools in our house this year, but certainly new classes & new teachers for our three to look forward to meeting! It’s a good time of year to remind all you parents & grandparents that eye checks for young eyes are highly recommended, at least once a year. It always surprises me to read that only around 25% of us take our children for eye checks (yes, I have seen all the young eyes in our house this month!) but 75% of us take our children for dental checks. In general most children can see well and normally. We do still see those who have just assumed that their blurry eyes are normal and that no one else sees any better. Until your children have an eye

I

GENERALLY think that we humans don't like change, but there are times when change happens whether we like it or not. The global political & economic scene is a great example here, but don’t worry, that’s the last time I mention politics. I would say that in general I’m happy embracing change. If you’ve read this blog before you probably know that I like new things - high tech equipment, the latest lighter, thinner & clearer lenses and particularly new glasses & sunglasses!

check it’s hard to be sure they’re seeing clearly. Of note are children who report words moving, jumbling or going blurry - these need careful assessment as glasses aren’t always the answer. Sometimes coloured tints or eye exercises are needed. Come and see us for a thorough assessment and advice if you or your child have any concerns, even if you’ve already had a sight test. One change I do enjoy is my transitions - glasses that darken in the sun. Being out and about more with my family they are definitely an easy option. Taking just one pair of glasses leaves a little more room in my rucksack for snacks too! I know glasses that change in the sun aren’t for all of you, but if you’d like to try them we offer you a love them or leave them exchange

guarantee. You & your family, however young, are most welcome to come and see us for your eye care and glasses - whether you like your lenses to change with the sun or not! To arrange an extended eye exam or frame style consultation for yourself or those you love, please call 0117 962 2474 or 0117 965 4434. Appointments can also be booked via our website, or just pop in to our practices in Henleaze or Fishponds and say Hi! We look forward to seeing you soon!

Are you ready for firework season? WITH fireworks season being 2 months away, now is the time we need to think about what we can do to help our pets. In the time before firework season: - De-sensitize your dog to the sound of fireworks. This needs to be done carefully, please speak to us or a behaviourist on how to do this. - Plug in calming remedies at least 2 weeks before the event so it has a chance to reach peak effect. - Set up a suitable hiding place such as a crate covered with a thick duvet, or a cat bed in an airing cupboard. - Try thundershirts, or similar, on your pet before the event – make sure they fit. - Start herbal medications a few days beforehand (always follow the instructions). If your pet needs prescription strength medications ensure you have a supply of these at least 2 weeks in advance. On the day:

- Cover outdoor pets with thick duvets and pack bales of hay/ sawdust around the hutch to muffle the sound. Consider bringing them indoors. - Do not let pets out as it gets dark. Secure cat flaps and block them if you have a cat which is likely to ‘break out’! - MAKE SURE COLLAR AND MICROCHIP DETAILS ARE UP TO DATE- we can check this for you if required. - Close all curtains, put on a radio or television slightly louder than normal to help hide the noise. - Allow them to settle themselves where they are happiest. - If you have a tolerant dog you

could try putting cotton wool in their ears – make sure you take it out and that they don’t eat it if they fall out! n PLANNING

Taking notice I SUSPECT that not that many people take the trouble to look at a notice attached to a lamppost. I tend to make the effort and have found that, as a general rule, the further the notice is from where I live, the less interesting it is. When closer to home, these notices are much more likely to have a direct bearing on the reader. Just the other day, one attached to a lamppost in Fishponds Road piqued my curiosity. It may well be replicated close to where you live, as it carried an announcement of the city council’s intention to introduce an Article 4 direction, which concerns the creation of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) from standard houses in the wards of Hillfields, Eastville and Frome Vale amongst others in East

Bristol. It was posted at the start of August and allowed up to the 23rd to comment on the proposal. An Article 4 Direction, once confirmed, has the effect of removing the right to pursue certain forms of development that would normally not require planning permission. In regard to houses becoming HMOs, it is not generally a step that is taken lightly. As you might expect, there is no extra funding provided by the government for implementing such a measure. The government has to be notified at the same time as the locals. Those with a healthy allergy to jargon may be wondering what an HMO is? It is a house where people who aren't from the same family live together, sharing some of the facilities. The typical arrangement would be a ‘student house’. Under normal circumstances, a standard one-family house could be converted into an HMO without the need to apply for planning permission, ie without the council or public having a say in the matter. In areas like Redland and Filton,

Chris Gosling Even if the Article 4 direction is confirmed, each case has to be treated on its own merits. Refusing an application which is in danger of tipping the balance will require sound reasoning, backed by a policy which itself has been the subject of public scrutiny. For that reason, an Article 4 direction is only the first step in the process, but that first step could well have been made by the time you read this. Chrisgoslingplanning@gmail.com

close to growing universities, the locals will tell you of the difficulties that can be caused: family housing with up to five bedrooms along whole streets can become fully populated. This is not a problem in theory, as the houses were designed to have all of the bedrooms occupied - but not with most of the occupants having their own car. There is also the problem in the summer of the street becoming a ‘ghost town’. Of course it is not the case that all HMOs are occupied by students, but the occupiers of an HMO are much of the time transient, with little stake in what happens around them. I do not wish to stigmatise people who live in HMOs but it is a form of accommodation people tend to select out of financial necessity, not by choice. They have their benefits, but in planning terms the issue is balancing the types of accommodation in order to achieve a mixed and balanced community, and avoiding creating areas where only one part of the population can live.

n IMPACT BEAUTY

Fashion versus beauty in lip enhancement: what is more important to you?

F

IRSTLY, before thinking of having any work done on your lips we need to consider the role that lips have. Firstly they play an important part in our speech and how we pronounce our words. Secondly, they play a role with eating our food whilst being very sensitive they will protect us from placing horrible foods in our mouth. Talking about sensitivity they are rich in blood and nerve supply which enables them to have a lovely red colour and provide us with the pleasure of kissing, being one of our erogenous zones. Our lips are involved with our facial expressions and therefore silently provide information to others on our feelings. Your lips need good care and attention. They have a thinner layer of skin causing them to be quite vulnerable to weather conditions. They can become dry in the sun requiring protection and exposed during the winter months causing dry and chapped lips. As we age lips lose their volume causing lines around the mouth and

within the lip tissue to form. Without a shadow of doubt lips have always been an area of beauty with full soft lips giving the appearance of a sensuous appearance. There are several clues here that you need to consider then when thinking of having a lip enhancement procedure. They are rich in blood supply therefore at risk of bruising and requiring careful attention to prevent any injury to the arteries. Think about the product of choice, lips need to be soft subtle and sensuous. Stay within the natural proportions in relation to the rest of your face. There is a golden ratio, and this should not be ignored. Staying within this ratio ensures that the focus of your lip enhancement remains in line with beauty and not necessarily what fashion dictates. Enjoy and value your lips they are such an important aspect of your facial anatomy. Only have treatment by a reputable safe and knowledgeable practitioner and remember – there is nothing nicer than a beautiful smile.

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

September, the psychological new year

D

ESPITE our New year falling in January I have never been able to shake the feeling that September is the time to start new things; summer is over, the window of activity before the nights draw in is shrinking, lets embrace our burst of new energy and get things done! I imagine for some of us this means we are breathing a sigh of relief, or sorrow, as our children return to school. Perhaps we are waving farewell to our holiday memories and hoping for renewed zeal for our working lives. The most organised among us will of course already be preparing for Christmas, but in the Christian Calendar we have a few other significant events before we reach that celebration. Looming large over us all is the significant change Brexit could bring. Bristol is a city that voted overall to remain but some reading this will have voted to

leave so, however we voted, we wait in uncertainty because, like us, our politicians have been taking things slower over the summer too. The deadline which seems ever so close also feels unprepared for. As a Christian leader the greatest sorrow for me regarding Brexit is the divisions within our communities that the referendum created. It seems to have divided us into ‘camps’ and we seem unable to share love and respect accross divisions of opinion. In all of the newness and renewed energy September brings I would hope to encourage us to reach out across possible divisions. The bible teaches us to love one another and to do so even more when our differences may potentially divide us. The story of the ‘Good Samaritan’ is one in which someone from one community helps a person in need from another community despite the fact that these two

communities were at extreme odds with one another. There is a challenge both for the helper and the one who is helped in this story; to be a helper requires us to live lives open to another’s distress and willing to offer our time and energy to help. To be helped opens up the challenge of being vulnerable enough that others can see our need, being willing to show we are struggling. Bristol has a reputation for being a diverse community and our diversity is one of our strengths. This strength grows as we allow one another to flourish in difference, to love one another as we are rather then assume that to love someone is to love them into agreeing with us. In the coming months as Brexit continues to loom and develop I believe our ability to love in difference is what will aid us in weathering the changes. As Christians, as human beings capable of great love, we are called to Love our neighbor and at

Staple Hill set for parking shake-up RESIDENTS living in Staple Hill have two weeks left to comment on plans to shake up parking in the area. South Gloucestershire Council is consulting with householders over a scheme to introduce new waiting restrictions. These include double yellow lines and changes to maximum waiting times in areas of limited waiting. School 'Keep Clear' markings also form part of the scheme as well as preparations for the eventual introduction of electric vehicle charging bays in council car parks in Byron Place, Haynes Lane, Page Road (short stay) and Page Road (four hour limit). The council wants to put double yellow lines at junctions and areas where parked vehicles reduce visibility and cause a safety hazard. The authority is also looking at spots where service vehicles

such as refuse lorries have problems due to bad parking. The proposals include converting existing advisory white 'Keep Clear' markings to no waiting at any time restrictions. In addition, waiting restrictions in Church Road will be reduced in order to allow enough parking for visitors to the church and leisure centre. A council report says: “The purpose of this scheme is to restrict dangerous areas of parking, maintain visibility at accesses and junctions, whilst ensuring that there is adequate parking provision for residents and visitors accessing the local shops, businesses, and leisure centre.” Roads affected are Acacia Road, Albert Road, Beaufort Road, Broad Street, Christchurch Avenue, Church Road, Clarence Gardens, Clarence Road, Colston Street, Coronation Road,

Zen on the green “A FULL park is an empty hospital” was a quote I heard recently. No truer phrase was spoken. I’m reaching my middle age now, having hung up my snowboard and scuba gear while my children were small, but if you’d told me five years ago that I’d be lawn bowling I would never have believed it; that I’d find it as relaxing as scuba diving over coral reefs and I’d have laughed! The truth is that, after a long week of children, work, and household responsibilities, I love a few hours of bowling on the green. There, surrounded by trees, good friends of a variety of ages, some in their 80s, and nothing but a simple game of skill, the mind unwinds. A sense of peace and calm, like meditation, stills the racing thoughts. It’s no wonder that the 80-something-year-old players still have the air of youth and ease of movement about them. It’s not just the exercise but the stress relief, social network and joy of nature that combine in a bowls game. If golf is a good way to ruin a nice walk, bowling is a good way to improve it. Sarah West Sarah has painted for us a delightful picture of an afternoon on the bowling green, a quintessentially English public parks activity that has flourished for well over a hundred years at Eastville. Bowling’s resilience over that time has been remarkable: there are a few good examples of thriving clubs but the impact of austerity and the local authority’s decision to implement sweeping

EASTVILLE PARK in the car park has caused a lot of disruption but we’re hoping things will start to improve now that the major excavations are out of the way. changes to the fees charged to clubs threaten their very existence. Eastville, as a small club, is vulnerable and though we have been successful in increasing our membership numbers there is a long way to go and the recruitment drive goes on! Please get in touch if you’d like to know more. Although the weather over the last few weeks has been a bit topsy-turvy, there’s been plenty going on in the park. The Islamic Cultural Fayre saw a riot of colour and activities throughout the afternoon, with a great range of Asian food on offer and some lovely music on stage. The Friends’ Pop-Up Café continues to be a great success - our next is on the morning of September 14. at the bowling green and painting over graffiti at the changing rooms! So much done in a short space of time: thank you all. Our volunteer activities have really blossomed over the summer, with some amazing progress at the Nissen hut. Our gardening club is getting into its stride and the café runs like a well-oiled machine, all because of the enthusiasm of our lovely volunteers. If you’ve passed by the hut recently, you’ll have seen the amazing artwork that’s being done by Immy, Jacqui and Paul. We have teamed up with the council communities team and formed a small group of volunteers to tackle the graffiti. We are also looking at ways to do something about overgrown and inaccessible pathways: the council’s ‘cost neutral’ parks policy is certainly starting to bite and we do need to try to find a way to keep things from getting any worse. As the warm weather hopefully continues, the lovely aromas from al fresco barbecues drift across the park as families and groups enjoy this wonderful green space – but it’s a bit disappointing to see so many scorched areas. Please try your best to avoid it happening and don’t forget to take your rubbish to a bin or home with you! Have you ever wondered how the Friends Group is funded? Apart from our own fundraising efforts, we receive annual donations from the Love Saves the Day and Tokyo World festivals. We also apply for small grants to help pay for improvements and maintenance. This year we’ve been successful with applications to Greggs and TK Maxx but we’re always keen to know of any other organisations that offer help to community groups. We are working hard on a proposal for a National Lottery Heritage bid and are keen to speak to anyone who has experience in the bid writing process. The Parkie

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Pioneering apprentice PCs

W

ITH the school holidays over, I’ve been reflecting on the exceptionally busy summer we’ve experienced. From the Extinction Rebellion protests that caused traffic mayhem in and around Bristol to wonderful events including Glastonbury, Pride and the Harbourside Festival, the police have worked really hard the last few months to keep our communities safe. I know officers will always go above and beyond to support such events and I want to say thank you to all those individuals and teams who have been involved for your hard work. I’m sure you would have also heard about our new Prime Minister’s promise to recruit 20,000 more police officers to make our streets safer. This is a commitment that I very much welcome. We’ve had to deal

with years of funding cuts and had to make £78 million worth of savings, all while protecting officer numbers wherever possible and dealing with increasingly more complex and serious crime. If the Prime Minister keeps his promise, it will ease the pressure on officers and teams in our area as well as improving outcomes for victims. Local people often say to me that they want to see more officers in their villages, towns and cities and an increase in numbers would reassure our communities and keep our streets feeling safe. Avon and Somerset Police is in a great position in terms of learning and development opportunities for new recruits, especially with the launch of the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA). Accredited by the College of

Policing and launched this year, the PCDA is being rolled our across the country. Avon and Somerset Police is the first force in the South West to move its initial police learning to the PCDA, partnering with UWE to offer a rewarding learning experience to our new recruits as well as a starting salary of £20k. Apprentice officers will spend around three quarters of their time learning on the job and the rest studying or in the classroom, becoming familiar with the skills they need to do the job. This is a great opportunity for individuals to pursue a varied and interesting role as part of the force, while gaining a qualification at the same time. Local people deserve the best officers on our streets to keep us safe and the new apprenticeship prepares, trains and supports officers to deal with the complex

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens crimes they will face as part of their role. I also hope that the new training and the opportunity to gain a higher education qualification will encourage a wide range of people who might not have considered a career in policing to apply and make a difference to our communities.

The FAB (Friends Ageing Better) Catch Up Café, a project of charity Age UK Bristol at the Kingfisher Café in Straits Parade, aims to improve the lives of older people in the city. It has set up a monthly event for anyone aged over 50 who is looking to change their lifestyle or career, which will be held at the cafe on the first Thursday of every month from 10.30am-midday. The first event on September 5 will be a talk by Claire Reed, from outreach organisation Business in the Community, about the help that is available. FRENCHAY Village Museum has put a call out for memories, objects and photographs from World War II. The artefacts should be related to Frenchay and will help form a new exhibition this autumn commemorating the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the war. Museum spokesperson Georgina Simmons said: “We are looking for memories, photographs and objects linked to this important part of the area’s history to loan between September 10, 2019 and January 2020 to display as part of our new exhibition. At the museum, we are particularly interested in objects relating to childhood, American GIs in Frenchay, the hospital and family experiences of fighting on the home front.” The museum displays a objects linked to the hospital between 1942 and 1945. The archive houses an anti-aircraft nose cone, national identity registration cards, ration books and a bomb fuse extractor used to defuse an unexploded German bomb that fell in a field in Hambrook. If you can add to this collection with your own artefacts, stories or pictures, email charlotteaappleyard@gmail.com The museum is open every Wednesday from 1-4pm and every Saturday and Sunday from 2-5pm. Entrance is free. For more information visit http:// www.frenchaymuseumarchives.co.uk/NewMuseum.htm

to a lot of people in their 50s who are struggling to get work, having never had a problem finding work before and feeling that their age is a barrier, that they are not being considered for work because they are 50-plus." After a successful trial over the summer, the Catch Up Café is now holding two separate themed events each month. The career and lifestyle event is on the first Thursday of each month and on the last, also from 10.30am-midday, a retro games event will be held for people to play games and do puzzles. People are invited to bring their own games along to share and there will also be Jenga, word searches and a selection of crossword puzzles provided.

The Establish scheme involves property firm Andrews working through its charitable arm the Andrews Charitable Trust with Bristol charity 1625 Independent People to provide long-term housing, emotional and personal support and access to help in finding and keeping a job, so that people leaving care can build independent lives. The two self-contained flats in the Fishponds opened this summer are the fourth set of homes opened under Establish, which now supports a total of 11 young people who have left the care system. The first was launched in Bristol in 2017 and two more have been opened in South London. 1625ip, which works with young people in Bristol to avoid homelessness, will manage

the Fishponds flats, which will accommodate two people and were bought and refurbished by Andrews Charitable Trust. Andrews Property Group chief executive David Westgate said the trust aimed to provide 50 homes to local charities within 50 years and was "already well ahead of that schedule". He added: "With each of

these homes that we launch, it is worth remembering that this is not just a case of providing young people with a home; we want to offer them wider support that encompasses everything from skills development, training and advice on career options, through to how to approach issues around personal finance and other aspects of independent

living." 1625ip chief executive Dom Wood said: “We’re both delighted and honoured to now be here celebrating this new home that will provide two more young people with a home and vital support for the coming few years, and look forward to engaging with more members of the Andrews’ team, without whom this initiative simply wouldn’t be possible." Members of Andrews’ staff have trained to work as mentors to help provide support to young people under the scheme. Employee Nathan Moore, who has himself experienced life in care, said: “Having been in care, I understand the challenges that these young people are facing. The process of becoming an independent adult is difficult enough at the best of times but for those young people leaving the care system, the challenges are often amplified if they don’t receive support and guidance."

n SPORT HILLFIELDS boxer Ethan Moore has won a silver medal in the European schools boxing championships. The championship, held over 10 days in Tbilisi, Georgia, saw the best school-aged boxers in Europe bid for the prestigious medals. Ethan, 14, from Fishpondsbased Downend Boxing Club, gained honours before a punch was thrown when he was named team captain of the 19-strong England team. His first opponent was an Irish boxer Thomas Ward who came after the Bristolian from the first bell. Evasive, classy boxing from Ethan across three rounds saw him take a unanimous decision and secure his silver medal place. In the final he faced strong Armenian S Arakelyan. Ethan began in the same fashion as his semi-final with fast feet and hand skilful boxing, negating the Armenian's strong attacks. The second round was closer, with the action taking place at close quarters and just taken by

Arakelyan. The final session was an immense exhibition of a boxer against a fighter which split the judges in the Armenian's favour. Craig Turner, head coach at Downend Boxing Club, said: “Ethan was just quality

throughout. “His dedication that turned him into an international standard athlete was nothing short of outstanding. I thought the roof was going to come off at the Harry Crook Centre, as we watched the live stream from Georgia. He was simply superb.” Dad Mark was equally as proud: “It's a fantastic achievement to take home a silver medal. "I’m so, so proud of my son. The hours and hours of training he puts in to compete at this level for a 14-year-old kid is mind blowing. It's time to rest up now, and I guess he can have a well deserved pizza.” On his return to the UK, Ethan said: “It’s a bitter pill to swallow not bringing gold back but I’ll come back stronger and become European gold medalist. “Thank you to everyone that has helped me and

supported me on my way to the schools championship, the GB championships and the Europeans. I wouldn’t be where I am now with out the help I get. “Massive thank you to to the English team for giving me the opportunity to represent my country at the biggest competition in schoolboy boxing. Now it's time to rest up for a couple of weeks before the next chapter in my boxing career begins.” The England team had a record breaking tournament with 14 medals from a squad of 19. The success comes only weeks before team mate Ellouise Challenger heads to the youth European championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. Ellie has just returned from preparations at a multi-nations camp in Ireland, and hopes are high for another Bristolian medal.

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE

Kindness and patience go a long way in treating patients Blog 66 – New staff chiropractors and sports therapists GREAT to see climate change return to normal in the UK as we see record rainfalls in August… This is what we are used to! I’m sure in the future we will be setting up pipelines to our friends in the south of Europe selling water to them at extortionate prices. Anywho, in preparation for the new clinic I have hired a couple of new faces with more to come. This month I can introduce you to our new chiropractor Emily and our new sports therapist Luke. Due to spending nearly 17 years working in elite level sport I have made many connections and luckily many friends who are now able to help me to create the greatest multi-disciplinary clinic in Bristol …possibly the world ;). Indeed, I met Emily whilst I was working in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic games. I was down at the track at Bath university working with the successful GB Paralympic team when this young female sprinter asked if I could check out the cause of her hamstring injuries. We did an examination and it was quickly evident that Emily had back problems that were leading to her hamstring issues. The traditional hamstring treatments that she had been doing weren’t getting to the root of the problem. A short treatment later and she was much better. I looked after her over the next couple of years and Emily developed an interest in what we did and how quickly it could help athletes. I explained that these treatments are also great for non-athletes and so she came to observe at Cleve Chiropractic in Mangotsfield to see for herself. Emily saw the benefit that ethical Chiropractic could have in just a short number of treatments for each patient (average for a non-athlete with low back pain is six to eight treatments.) Five years later Emily has completed her Masters in Chiropractic and just

graduated this summer looking for work. In life timing is everything and to have such an amazing, kind and intelligent chiropractor, that I already know as a lovely person, graduate just as I expand into the new clinic is perfect! Emily has already completed a couple of years of practice on real patients as part of her Masters degree so she graduates with experience. But what you can’t buy in a new chiropractic associate is natural kindness, patience and a willingness to want to care for real people. That is what Emily has in abundance. Beyond that, to work with me you have to treat me and trust me when I say that, that is a difficult test to pass. I only accept the best quality here. Speaking of quality, over the years alongside our famous physio team we have been building our sports therapy team. Those who have a been patients long enough will know how fantastic Amy and Fayme are. They are proven super heroes at getting to the bottom of people's soft tissue issues and helping with recovery from sports injuries. However for years I have worked alongside Luke at Bristol Rovers. Alongside Amy and Fayme (obviously) Luke is one of the greatest sports therapists that I have ever worked with in sport. Luke has a talent with his hands for soft tissue that developed more and more as he sadly lost his eyesight. Luke is heavily partially sighted and all credit to him, you wouldn’t know if you met him. He is happy for me to talk about his sight and as I see it, it is a big reason for his super power. Luke's hand control and feel during massage is incredible. The loss of one sense has developed another and Luke is in the perfect job to take advantage. I have to make a couple of adaptations at the clinic to help him but every single adaptation is worth it, to enable Luke to work with patients at Cleve

Chiropractic. If there are any other employers out there considering working with the visually impaired I implore you to give it chance. The benefits are never ending. Since Luke has lost his sight Luke has run the London Marathon unaided, rowed for the GB Paralympic team, sailed internationally and run the vital ‘return to play’ department of Bristol Rovers Football Club. After working in the multi discipline team at Rovers, Luke sees his future as a chiropractor. He cannot start studying until 2020 so we have him with us for at least a year and after that we hope to welcome him back as a chiropractor! Emily and Luke are taking bookings now, so call or book online to come and meet them. So after all the introductions I can update you that the new clinic is a couple of weeks behind but is still getting there. I hope for it to be ready to open mid to
