So The org during this pandemic is experiencing a “new normal”. Now, we have been working together but far apart. The new tambayan has been moved online, activities have been synchronous but also asynchronous, and service activities focus more on donation drives rather than immersions. In the short span of six months, a lot has changed in the way we do things, but we have adapted and transformed into one of the most proactive orgs during this time of crisis. From the beginning, we have dedicated our efforts into helping those in need: our frontliners, the sick, and other affected communities. We did all this by organizing donation drives and partnering with others to boost the initiatives that help those who need it the most during this crisis. In the months to come, we continue to remain steadfast and reach out in every way we can. The org’s principles of service, teaching, fellowship, and prayer continue to thrive despite the situation. All of this, we offer up to God as we continue to work towards a healthier and brighter future. Nothing without faith, Lorenzo

FISH N' QUIPS - SEPTEMBER 2020 University of the Philippines In-Christ Thrust for University Students (UP ICTUS)

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITORS-IN-CHIEF

2020 has definitely made it really easy for all of of us to feel hopeless. We're more than halfway through the year and we're still stuck in the same tired place, yearning to meet up with anyone outside of our immediate family and a chance to feel any sense of normalcy in this “new normal.”

Parish of the Holy Sacrifice Complex, Apacible St., UP Diliman, Quezon City for inquiries: ictus.execomm@ gmail.com

Being confined in our houses and hearing about the same thing happening in the news are sure to make anyone pent up with frustration. For a lot of people, 2020 was supposed to be the year to get themselves together. It was a year where new year's resolutions would cease being empty promises, a year where opportunities would be taken instead of feared, where regret would be kept at a minimum and gratitude at a maximum. But to our dismay, it didn't quite go as planned. We wouldn't blame you if it feels more difficult to get out of bed each passing day. But as with everything, we choose to carry on–even if it doesn't seem like the wisest choice anymore. With that, we present to you this semester's Fish 'n Quips. While it reminds us about the realities outside our homes we must fight against, it also gives us ways to take care of ourselves (something I'm sure all of us are guilty of forgetting!) amidst these trying times, and reminds us of the things we can look forward to once this is all over. Nothing without faith, Jess & Karl

This pandemic has taken the world by surprise. Since March, our lives have seemingly advanced in slo or have been on pause entirely. It has locked us up, literally, and we cannot help but miss the hustle a before the widespread of COVID-19 . There is no doubt that the students, faculty, and staff of UP Diliman miss the smell of campus, the fee look of it, everything. While the other aspects may be quite difficult to emulate, the taste of UP Dilim nately, is easily within reach.

We have compiled a list of food items reminiscent of a hot summer afternoon cooled down with refre GE-filled days wherein the only getaway is a quick lunch with friends, and a congratulatory token for to mark the end of an all too stressful event.

Lending a Helping Hand to Others during the Pandemic

CORONAVIRUS wants to fight!

written by Javi Baquiran

“

It is a recognition of this frustrating disparity that has moved many of us to cultivate a desire to help.

The reality of a near 6 month stretch of COVID stricken life continues to bear an abundance of difficulties for all of us. For some of us, our fortunate standard of living has diluted most of our problem potentials into mere nuisances that are, more often than not, easily solved by simple adaptation. For many others, however, already vulnerable pre-pandemic living conditions have been abruptly aggravated, elevating concerns of basic sustenance that require material, not behavioral, responses. I think that it is a recognition of this frustrating disparity that has moved many of us to cultivate a desire to help-one that is not only fueled by compassion, but more notably, resolve. However, even with a helping spirit well-established, the pandemic yet again pitches another obstacle right at us: how are we even

to begin helping others when we are indefinitely stuck at home? Simply put, the demand for help has skyrocketed, yet the logistics of doing so has become considerably complicated. Do not fret though, as any glimpse at one’s Facebook feed flooding with narratives of charitable student-run initiatives makes it clear that the helping spirit burning within you need not be entirely stifled. Yes, the complexities of our individual situations and that of an intended beneficiary are likely deep and profuse, so any effort to lend a helping hand should be matched with the appropriate levels of compromise, patience, and humility. Regardless, it is possible for anyone to help, and to help with that quest for duty, here are a few ways in which we can assist others during the pandemic:

01.

Support existing donation drives.

One of the easiest ways to give to those in need is by donating to up and running donation drives. The logistics of picking a target beneficiary, coordinating with community representatives, purchasing materials, and distributing donations have all been handled by the project organizers; all that’s left to do is to make that quick transfer of funds. A mere 5 minutes of one’s day, and a sacrifice of what could have been 2 tubs of ice cream can translate into a whole day’s supply of food and hygiene items for a disadvantaged family. Enthusiasm to give back is definitely appreciated, but it’s important to be wary of such excitement leading to blind generosity. Let us be informed and think critically when we pick an initiative to support. We have to ask ourselves: is this project legitimate? Do I agree with their vision? Which beneficiary would my donation benefit the most?

02.

Create your own donation drive.

While donating to existing donation drives certainly goes a long way, some of us may possess the resources, determination, and circumstances to want to take matters into our own hands and start something from scratch. Now, the center of any donation drive, existing or planned, should always be the beneficiary, and the creative and administrative flexibility granted by a self-initiated and self-run donation drive enables us to freely pick that beneficiary ourselves. The prevalence of active initiatives, each of which being catered to a unique community of persons, does not erase the reality that there are still many other marginalized groups unilluminated by the spotlights of existing institutional aid. It’s very probable that a decision to start a new fundraiser was already preceded and inspired by the knowledge of a community in need. In that case, the foundation has been laid, and we can then proceed with the practical steps of fleshing out operations. On the other end, for those starting with a subjectless desire to help, one way to discover a community that needs help is to start with the individual that needs help. Maybe it’s a family gardener, a barangay tanod, or a favorite campus tindero of fishball; if you know of a contact whom you worry may have been adversely affected by the pandemic, then reach out to them and their community.

03.

Utilize your talents & skills.

Up to this point, we’ve primarily discussed helping others in terms of financial assistance through donation drives. However, one’s intention to help is not limited to just material initiatives. As nearly every aspect of life has been altered by the pandemic, it only makes sense that an equally diverse field of professions, hobbies, talents, and skills can be utilized to productively and altruistically respond to these trouble-ridden times. Happen to be a public health student or med student? Or simply knowledgeable and adept at research? Create articles, informative posts, and infographics to help spread information during a crisis where misinformation and ignorance can quite frighteningly put your health, and that of others, at risk. Skilled in arts, crafts, and design? Assist in making these informative materials visually appealing, create artworks to sell and donate the profits, or create homemade masks and face shields for distribution. Instead of succumbing to the fatalistic assumption of “I can’t do anything”, try thinking creatively when you ask yourself “what am I capable of doing?”

04.

Support local.

05.

Be informed.

When buying produce and meal items, try looking into local homegrown sources instead of resorting to giant supermarkets or restaurant corporations. There have been many farmers, fishermen, and other local producers who have had their source of income curtailed by the disruption of delivery and supply chains. Getting products to customers has become more difficult than ever, with farmers having to rely on relatives in the cities, small entrepreneurs, or even just themselves to make these connections with buyers. Unsure where to look? I’m certain that by exploring community viber group chats or inquiring with LGUs, one will be able to find out how or where to purchase these products, whether it be through local distributors or pop-up farmer markets.

Not everyone is capable of taking active steps to help those disenfranchised by the pandemic. We have our own financial concerns, increased household responsibilities, personal health priorities, and psychologically taxing dispositions--and that’s perfectly understandable as it is a crisis after all. However, even for those who are unable to commit to such projects, a relatively passive way of “helping” is by staying informed about the current state of things that take place past the safety of our home’s walls. On one end, we can think about it as a sort of civic maturity. Awareness and mindfulness can effectively help secure our wellbeing, and consequently, contribute to the wellbeing of those around us. On the other end, I like to think of staying informed as a stepping stone, a rung on a ladder, a warm-up that may not yet involve any direct assistance to others, but it equips us with a necessary understanding of the context of current society so that in the future, when we are now recuperated, secure, and driven, we will have a pre-built direction about what to do and where to go.

06.

Check up on others.

We mentioned in our last issue how this prolonged and indefinite “new normal” can be the cause of mental disarray. Though social media has made it possible for us to maintain a hopeful sliver of comforting connection with our friends, it is now harder than ever to recognize their unspoken unhappiness. We no longer have the irreplaceable avenue of physical interaction to notice real time expressions, demeanors, and other non-verbal cues. Our appraisal of most of our friends’ state of being is derived from how they present themselves online, and we all know how incomplete, and even inaccurate, people’s online personas can be in comparison to their true experienced realities. Before brainstorming about ambitious projects, calculating costs and profits for donations, or reaching out to communities here and there, we can start our helping train by first checking up on friends, family, and loved ones. For those who unsuspectingly need it, a simple, surprising, and genuine “how are you?” will go a long way.

Making time for God during Quarantine written by Jeri Cambas

To-Do Video Chat

From the start of the year 2020 up until now, so many events have transpired and most of them have brought bad news. Considering the Covid-19 pandemic and the many issues surfacing not only in the Philippines but also in other nations, such as racism and violation of human rights, it has become apparent that 2020 is not our best year to date. Moreover, it has become a time when speaking up can be considered dangerous. This quarantine, most of us have been feeling anxious, restless, disappointed, and maybe even sad about these things going on around us. What better time, then, to

strengthen our faith in Him from whom we get our life and our strength and what better way to do than to than to make time for Him this quarantine. Making time for God is not easy. Whether we are busy or not, making time for Him takes effort. Some of us even only remember to pray when there is something we need to ask for. Nevertheless, this quarantine, most of us, especially those just staying at home, have been given even just a little bit more time to set aside for Him. You can start making time for God in these little ways:

When you wake up in the morning, pray It doesn’t have to be a long prayer. A simple thank you for Him for waking you up to see another day is a good start. It is also a good way to ask for His guidance and His strength as you go about your day. If you want a more structured way of praying, you can always try A.C.T.S. This stands for adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication. Adoration would be the part where you express your love for Him and praise Him for His greatness; confession is the part where you tell Him about your wrongdoings and shortcomings and ask Him for forgiveness for these; thanksgiving is where you thank Him for His love and all the graces He has blessed you with; and supplication is where you tell Him about your requests, your wants and your needs. In supplication, you can pray for others as well and ask God for the help they might need.

When you eat or receive gifts and blessings, THANK HIM THROUGH PRAYER and PRAY THAT OTHERS MAY RECEIVE THESE AS WELL Having food on our tables is a blessing. Being healthy in this time of pandemic is a blessing. Having a shelter and a family in this time of crisis when others outside are suffering is a blessing. Let us thank Him for these things that we can still enjoy. Moreover, let us pray for those less fortunate than us- that they may receive shelter and stability as well.

bible

Block the noise and OPEN the BIBLE

Turn off the radio or the tv, watch less Netflix, and lessen unnecessary time spent on social media or surfing the net to devote some time for reading the Bible. There are multiple ways to go about this. You can choose to start from the beginning; you can choose to do your own Bible study or join a Bible study with friends through online means; you can read the Gospel for the day; or you can choose to simply open it, read the verses your eyes land on and learn from what you read. For some, their Bibles may also have a part at the end called the “Doctrinal Bible Index” with a list of verses they can turn to for a specific feeling or situation, or for a particular subject they wish to understand more. Whatever way you choose to do, reading and understanding the Bible will allow you to learn more about God and your faith, leading you closer to Him.

Set time to PRAY the ROSARY We often turn to Mother Mary to intercede for us in our prayers. As St. Alphonsus Maria Ligouri has mentioned, “In His eagerness to show you mercy God has given His Own Son as your Advocate. And then, to make your confidence even stronger, He has given another Advocate, who obtains through her prayers whatever she asks. Go to Mary, and you will see salvation.” In praying the Rosary, Mother Mary has left us 15 promises. Praying the Rosary not only allows us to obtain these promises, but also allows us to meditate and contemplate about the life of Jesus and the Holy Virgin Mary. Through this, we again are brought closer to Him.

examen St. Ignatius of Loyola created the Examen which he believed to be the “most important quarter-of-anhour of a person’s day.” While it is a twice-daily prayer that can be prayed anytime most convenient for you, you can start by praying it only once a day if you are new to it. In doing the Examen, we are called to review what has transpired during our day to “find God and God’s blessings in daily life.” The 5 step routine for the daily Examen is as follows:

1. Give thanksgiving. 2.Ask for the Spirit 3. Review and recognize failures. 4. Ask for forgiveness and healing. 5. Pray about the next day.

To help remember these steps, you may also use this 5R’s mnemonic from the book Reimagining the Ignatian Examen: Fresh Ways to Pray from Your Day by Mark Thibodeaux, SJ: 1. Relish the moments that went well and all of the gifts I have today. 2. Request the Spirit to lead me through my review of the day. 3. Review the day. 4. Repent of any mistakes or failures. 5. Resolve, in concrete ways, to live tomorrow well. From Adry Lord, I’d like to pray for this pandemic to pass as quickly as possible and to help those who are most challenged by this situation — that you provide for them both financially and emotionally during this time and protect them from any unjust treatment. I also pray for our healthcare workers to stay healthy and strong as they serve. Lastly, I’d like to pray for those infected by the virus and feel hopeless (including their families who may feel helpless), be with them as they overcome difficulties.

From Zacharie Dear Lord, We praise and glorify Your name. We depend on Your loving hands and we have faith in You. We do everything in Your name and our hearts are Yours only. We thank You for everything Lord. We thank You for the unending blessings. For the food that we are eating everyday amidst this pandemic that resulted to limiting the food supplies even more for the poor. Lord guide them. We thank You for our home, our safe space where You protect us from the virus. We thank You for our loved ones to whom we depend on to get through this health crisis. We thank You for Your love, for Your protecting hands and for Your guidance that never left us. We humbly ask for Your forgiveness to our sins. The sins that we made while thinking, the sins that we did to other people, and the sins of failing to help on other people. Amidst this pandemic, we understand that our priority is to help the needy, be safe and protect ourselves, but we still sin. So we ask for Your forgiveness. We pray for our fellow Filipinos who experience the worst of this pandemic to be guided by Your love, we also pray for our loved ones who are more exposed to the virus, and also the frontliners who have sacrificed themselves for helping the victims be covered by Your protecting hands. We pray for the people who have gotten a positive result on their swab tests and all the COVID-19 patients be cured by You and made them be guided by Your love. We love you deeply, we trust You wholeheartedly, and we depend on You strongly. Let Your will be done. In jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

I would also like to pray for all those infected with covid-19 and and all those who are suffering right now because of the different issues the world is facing.
