hilst London might be known for its grand Victorian townhouses and riverside apartments, there is another side to London’s property market that you may not have yet seen. Tucked away are some absolutely charming historic mews streets. London’s mews were created to house the coachmen and horses that served the Victorian and Georgian elite of nearby mansions.

These once humble lodgings are today cobblestone lanes with picture perfect homes - transformed into some of the most sought-after property in London and instantly transporting you back to another time and place..

If you’re wondering where exactly you can find these pretty streets, we’re here to help, here are just some of the cutest streets in the capital.

Love Actually fans should head straight to St Luke’s Mews in Notting Hill. No. 27 was used as the setting for the infamous scene where Mark proclaims his love for Juliet using cue cards. The buildings were originally used as stables for the houses on Lancaster Road and Westbourne Park, but most have since been converted into flats. Still, some authentic features of the mews have been retained, including a number of the stable doors. This alleyway remains one of the prettiest in the capital and a favorite of many London photographers.

KELLY STREET, NW1 8PG Kelly Street is one of the jewels in the Kentish Crown.

It’s a perfect curve of mid-19th century Grade II-listed pastel terraces in a relatively narrow tree-lined road dating back to the 1830s. The houses are distinct as a result of their brightly coloured stucco fronts, black cast iron railings, window guards and small front gardens.

The street is intimate, quiet and secluded, retaining original Victorian streetlights and historic black and white bollards. providing glorious historic character.

HOLLAND PARK MEWS, W11 3SU A stone’s throw from Holland Park and the beautiful Kyoto Garden, these mews are accessed via an ornate stone archway. A unique feature of the houses on Holland Park Mews is that they all have staircases leading up to the second story. The vibrantly painted doors and the flowers and creepers spilling over the wrought-iron balconies make this mews utterly magnificent!

BATHURST MEWS, W2 2SB With 65 properties, it is one of the largest in London.

Nestled among the streets of Bayswater, it remains true to its historic roots as the only mews in London still housing a working stable. The stables have been in constant use since the 1830s except for a short period during World War II when they housed motorcars instead. The terraced houses and cobbled street survived the Blitz, narrowly escaping the effects of a bomb that devastated nearby Westbourne Terrace. A visit is a must if you want to appreciate the functional history of these streets. You’ll probably hear and smell the horses before you see them.

WARREN MEWS, W1T 6AD LITTLE GREEN STREET, NW5 1BL This narrow cobbled street in Kentish Town is only 8 feet wide and is lined with two-story brick houses that were built in the 1780s. The buildings are Grade II listed so they’re protected by English Heritage and it’s one of London’s few Georgian streets that remains completely intact. The street features in a poem by English poet, John Betjeman and starred in the music video for The Kinks’s 1966 song, Dead End Street.

The distinctive entrance to Warren Mews in Fitzrovia is almost as photogenic as the mews behind. Wander through and you’ll be transported to another time.

Just a stone’s throw away from busy Euston Road and Regent’s Park, keep your eye out for the low passageway cut through one of the buildings lining Warren Street or you just might miss it.

KYNANCE MEWS, SW7 4QR Kynance Mews in Kensington is arguably one of the prettiest streets in London. This mews makes for a tranquil getaway from all the noisy hustle and bustle. The cobbled backstreet – accessible through the small archways at Launceston Place or Gloucester Road – narrowly escaped bombing during World War II, when much of the surrounding area had to be rebuilt. Kynance Mews is a jaw-droppingly pretty place. Potted plants line the edges of the street and look up to see windowsills blooming with flowers.

As Kensington Palace reopens to visitors, a new temporary exhibition set in the newly-conserved historic Orangery will explore the unique relationship between fashion designer and royal client. Titled Royal Style in the Making, the display will feature never-before-seen items from the archives of some of the most celebrated royal couturiers of the 20th century, set alongside examples of the glittering gowns and stylish tailoring created for three generations of royal women.

The exhibition will offer visitors a sneak peek into the rarefied world of the atelier, unpicking how some of Britain’s finest designers rose to the challenge of creating clothing destined for the world stage. From the symbolic power of a coronation gown to the romance of a royal wedding dress, the designs on show helped shape the public image of the British monarchy, and promoted the British fashion industry on a truly global scale. Using original sketches, fabric swatches and unseen photographs from the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection – a treasure trove of over 10,000 items of dress and design history cared for by Historic Royal Palaces - Royal Style in the Making will consider the unique attributes each couturier brought to the royal wardrobe, set alongside

examples of their most famous work.

Among the star items going on display will be a rare surviving toile for the 1937 coronation gown of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother; consort of King George VI. Created by London based court designer Madame Handley-Seymour - a favoured couturier of the dowager Queen Mary with an innate understanding of the rules and tradition of royal dress – the silk satin gown with its golden national emblems was the perfect choice to embody continuity at the start of an unexpected new reign. The toile is an extraordinary fullsize working pattern of the completed gown, and features the stunning design for the embroidery hand-painted onto it, highlighting the attention to detail required in planning for such an important state occasion.

Visitors will also be able to experience Diana, Princess of Wales’s wedding dress displayed complete with its spectacular sequin encrusted train, which at 25 feet dramatically filled the aisle of St Paul’s Cathedral, and remains the longest in royal history. The dress, on loan from The Duke of Cambridge and The Duke of Sussex, is now among the most famous in bridal history, and features a fitted bodice overlaid at the centre both front and back with panels of antique Carrickmacross lace that had originally belonged to Queen Mary, the groom’s great-grandmother. Its gently scooped neckline and large puffed sleeves are trimmed with bows and deep ruffles of taffeta, a style popularized by the Princess in the early 1980s, while the full skirt is supported on a mountain of stiff net petticoats to create its famous silhouette.

NEW MICHELIN STAR FOR

ondon’s fine dining Indian restaurant Benares Mayfair is celebrating having won back its Michelin star, under the leadership of Executive Chef Sameer Taneja, at 2021 Michelin Guide to Great Britain and Ireland online

ceremony.

Sameer comments: “The team and I are absolutely delighted to have regained a star for Benares. It’s a fantastic achievement and despite testing times for hospitality over the past year, the entire team have all worked incredibly hard to maintain exceptional standards at every service. We would like to thank our customers for their wonderful feedback and support, our supplier partners and the Michelin Guide for their faith in us.”

Despite a very challenging year for hospitality, Benares was one of the first restaurants to embrace fine-dining delivery in the first lockdown and has been serving its loyal customers across London and Greater London ever since.

The team have also donated over 14,000 free hot meals to the NHS and Emergency Services workers fighting on the frontline against Covid-19.

Benares Mayfair opened in 2003 and Sameer joined the team as Head Chef from 2012 until

2015 during which time the restaurant held a Michelin star. He returned to Benares as Executive Chef in the summer of 2019 and introduced new menus which he consistently evolves based on best produce available and seasonality. His culinary style pairs high quality British ingredients with authentic Indian spices, whilst incorporating classical techniques learned from his extensive time cooking in European kitchens and 20 years’ experience working with some of the world’s best chefs.

Whilst the restaurant remains closed due to current restrictions, it continues to operate its Benares@Home delivery service seven days a week for lunch and dinner, offering a la carte dishes, daily Indian-inspired roasts, tasting menus and more.

We are more alike than we are different – nothing brings home this message more than the five classical elements in nature – space, air, fire, water and earth. On display in the latest Art-ma virtual art exhibition, The Journey of the Soul through the 5 Elements, are five abstract pieces by Romanian artist Ovidiu Kloska available for viewing from 22nd May – 13th June 2021.

This collection reminds us that underneath our perceived differences, we are one. “We are keen to showcase the artworks in their natural environment so that visitors can immerse themselves in the journey of the soul through the virtual gallery experience” says Reena.

Another Art-ma artist, London-based Karun Soni, uses his own spiritual experiences to create art that connects to the soul. One piece in particular combines the themes of mental health and the teachings of Lord Shiva. Central to the piece is a Shiva-like figure, who is meditating in order to gain control over his anxious thoughts. Here, Lord Shiva represents the human

condition. Soni, who went through a dark phase in life, found solace in one of Lord Shiva’s teachings on the importance of self-control of the mind, body and spirit. An important lesson in a world that is now, more than ever, filled with uncertainty.

has committed to selling more work by female artists than male by launching the 60:40 Art Pledge. In recognition of International Women’s Day on 8th March 2021, the London-based online gallery pledges that 60 percent of the artists they represent will be women artists.

Recent figures show that only 14% of living artists represented by galleries in Europe and North America are women. In the last 10 years, women artists represented a paltry 2% of all auction sales and just 11% of all museum acquisitions according to research by Sotheby’s.

“Public art collections and commercial galleries for the most part represent considerably more men than women,” says Erica Davis, co-founder of Murus Art. “This is why we have launched the 60:40 Art Pledge.”

“By celebrating women’s achievement in contemporary art, I hope to encourage other galleries to review their inventory and consider upping the number of female artists they represent. Significantly.”

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world” making it timely for Murus Art to highlight recent reports about the art world’s gender imbalance.

It is not hard to grasp the origins of this inequality, given that women were largely barred from artistic professions and training until the 1870s.”

The 60:40 Art Pledge sets out to increase visibility for women artists including those represented by Murus Art such as Maria Rivan, Bonnie & Clyde, Dawn Beckles and Clare Grossman, while calling out inequality.

Nadia Attura, one of the artists represented in the Murus Art collection, adds: “By supporting the careers of women artists, Murus Art hopes to inspire young artists too. I’m thrilled to support the 60:40 Art Pledge.”

• Aim for your bedroom to be approximately 18°C. Too warm and you’ll struggle to fall asleep, too cold and you’ll likely wake around 5am when body temperatures are at their lowest. Avoid eating too late as this will raise your body temperature as you digest food.

• Get plenty of morning daylight. Outdoor light - even on a cloudy day - is many times brighter than artificial light. This brighter light increases alertness and resets our Circadian Rhythms (our sleep/ wake cycles).

• Avoid caffeine after midday. The ‘half-life’ of caffeine in adults is about 5-6 hours. By drinking caffeine after midday you risk disrupting your sleep pattern and your sleep quality.

• Limit device use before bed. Many studies suggest that blue light in the evening disrupts your brain’s natural sleep-wake cycles, which are crucial for optimal health.

• Find a relaxing night-time routine. Whether it is reading or listening to soft music, keeping a routine before bed tells your brain that it is time for sleep. This repetition is a form of ‘Classical Conditioning’ or ‘learning through association’.

• Deep breathing before bedtime. The rest and digest system is another name for the Parasympathetic nervous system, which is associated with repair, relaxation and rest. The opposite is the Sympathetic system, which is our ‘fight or flight’ response. By deep breathing before bed, and focussing on your breathing, you help kickstart your ‘rest and digest’ system and sleep better.

• Write down your worries. Keep a notepad to record your worries, or simply use it to record the key tasks you need to accomplish in the coming days. By commiting these thoughts to paper you externalise them. This is turn leaves you less prone to lay awake pondering on them if you wake in the night.

esigner and illustrator Gail Myerscough has turned her side hustle into a thriving business after being made redundant during the pandemic.

The entrepreneur lost her job as a retail manager at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester after spending six months on furlough.

Having run her design studio as a side hustle for six years she decided to take the plunge, work full time on her own business and hasn’t looked back.

Gail, who works from her studio in South Manchester, said: “I loved my job and it was devastated to lose it after 16 years of service. But I used the time on furlough wisely - to
