Getting Your Personal Affairs in Order
Ensuring your affairs are in order is a crucial step in safeguarding your future and providing peace of mind for you and your family. Two key components of this process are creating a will and establishing lasting powers of attorney (LPA).
Wills
A will is a legal document that outlines your wishes regarding the distribution of your assets and the care of any minor children after your death. The intestacy rules are very antiquated and do not protect or provide for modern family structures. They also do not provide any protection in the event that a beneficiary is not capable of managing their inheritance after age 18. Relying on these rules is, in short, a recipe for disaster.
Having a Will is crucial for all business owners to ensure their business (and personal) assets are managed according to their wishes after their deaths. A well-drafted Will can help prevent potential conflicts among heirs, ensure the business is passed on to a capable successor, and provide financial
security for loved ones.
Getting a Will in place is the first step but it is important to then review and update your will regularly, especially after major life events such as marriage, divorce, the birth of a child or significant changes in your financial situation or the financial and personal situation of your beneficiaries. Regular updates ensure that your will remains accurate and reflects your current wishes.
Wills can be very simple and set out in black and white who gets what and when. However, for many individuals, a slightly more flexible structure is appropriate in order to provide greater protection for the family in the long run. For example, what if one of your beneficiaries is mid-divorce at the time of your death? Their inheritance might pass quickly through their hands and into the hands of a soon-to-be exspouse.
It is also important to think about possible protection on the first death. What if your partner remarries or enters into a new relationship following your death? If you have left
everything to them, those assets may not end up with your shared children and might instead pass to the new family.
Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA)
A lasting power of attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint someone to make decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so. There are two types of LPA:
• Health and Welfare LPA: This allows your appointed attorney(s) to make decisions about your medical care, living arrangements and other personal welfare matters.
• Property and Financial Affairs LPA: This allows your appointed attorney(s) to manage your finances, including paying bills, managing bank accounts and selling property.
Common Misconceptions about LPAs
“I’m not old enough to need an LPA.”
If only I had a pound for every time someone said this to me. Incapacity is not only caused by age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s or dementia though. It could be as a result of an accident, illness, stroke or heart attack to name but a few examples. Incapacity might also be temporary as we saw during the pandemic when some patients were put on ventilators for extended period of time.
“I Have a Will, So I Don’t Need an LPA”
Your Will appoints people to deal with your affairs after your death. Until that time, your chosen executors have no powers and your beneficiaries have no rights. A Lasting Power of Attorney appoints people to act for you during your lifetime in the event that you no longer have physical or mental capacity to do so.
“Everything is held jointly so I don’t need an LPA”
This is a common myth and one that can cause families a huge amount of stress and significant cashflow issues. Regardless of whether or not your joint owner is a spouse, banks will usually freeze a joint account as soon as they become aware that one party has lost mental capacity. An application to the Court of Protection is likely to take at least 9 months and cost a significant amount of money at a time when the family are already looking at increased costs and an urgent change in circumstances.
Having both types of LPA in place is crucial and protects not only you but also your family. An LPA:
• Ensures Your Wishes Are Respected: An LPA ensures that decisions made on your behalf align with your preferences.
• Prevents Legal Complications: Without an LPA, your loved ones may need to go through a lengthy and costly court process to gain the authority to make decisions for you.
• Peace of Mind: Knowing that someone you trust will manage your affairs if you become incapacitated provides peace of mind.
Just like a will, it’s important to review your LPAs regularly.
Changes in your personal circumstances or relationships may necessitate updates to your LPAs to ensure they remain relevant and effective.
Conclusion
Getting your personal affairs in order is a vital step in planning for the future. These documents provide clarity, ensure your wishes are respected, and offer peace of mind to you and your loved ones.
So use this as your call to action. Spring cleaning is not only for our houses, take some time to review your existing documents or seek advice on putting new documents in place.

Grown in the Surrey Hills in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the vineyard is planted on a chalky-limestone hill, the same geological formation as that of the famed Champagne region.
The High Clandon Estate Vineyard encompasses two other ventures – its own honey from bees thriving on the English wild-flower meadows abutting the vineyard; and truffles from their secret truffiere – a truffle orchard planted in 2004 with oaks and hazels from which it harvests Burgundian Truffles (Tuber uncinatum). Autumn 2019 yielded England’s biggest truffle weighing in at 604g. January 2024 produced another welcome surprise: the advent of kilograms of the Perigord Black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) and the second such find in England.

Join a community gathering on St Martha’s Hill with an optional short service by Vicar
Oakden of St Martha’s Church.
Hosted by the Surrey Hills National Landscape, this event gives local horse riders the opportunity to ride their mounts to St Martha’s Church, where there will be an optional blessing of the horses promptly at 2pm. Most riders like to be smartly dressed, and this makes for a perfect picture up on the hill. A diverse array of riders, horses and ponies take part, with the treat of enjoying the perfect view atop St Martha’s Hill. Walkers and dogs on leads are welcome to attend. The event is FREE but if you are a rider,
“Hosted
by the Surrey Hills National Landscape, this event gives local horse riders the opportunity to ride their mounts to St Martha’s Church”
please register your details so we know how many people with their horses will be attending. If you are spectating on foot, you do not need to book a ticket.
There will be a collection on the day for St Martha’s Church and the Surrey Hills Society who deliver important conservation and access projects for people and nature.
Parking and arrival
Travel and parking to the event is the responsibility of the attendees. However, for those using horse transport, and seeking a good hack in conjunction with the service, we recommend the Roman Temple Car Park on Farley Green GU5 9ER.
The service is short, so that horses don’t become restless. Riders must find their own way to St Martha’s Church, using the network of bridleways that criss-cross this section of the Surrey Hills.
All pedestrians, spectators, with dogs on leads will be guided to view from inside the cemetery walls, from where the service will be conducted.
There will be a welcome, a prayer, and a poem, before the vicar visits each horse and rider in turn, to give the blessing.
There is no fee but there will be a collection taken at the event, which riders will be encouraged to support; at the close, participating riders will receive a rosette, before dispersing.
This event may be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

In My Mind’s Eye is a not-for-profit organisation with a philosophy dedicated to developing art in the community and supporting local artists. Two exhibitions each year at Christmas and in early summer gives Surrey artists the opportunity to exhibit locally in the beautiful exhibition spaces at West Horsley Place.
“All profits from the In My Mind’s Eye exhibitions will be donated each year to a Surrey charity. This year the chosen charity is the Lightbox Gallery in Woking. We are incredibly lucky to have this public gallery in Surrey, a wonderful cultural space which also reaches out to the local community. With the loss of public funding Lightbox is now more reliant on donations and is a very worthy cause for Surrey artists to support,” says Liz Hauck.

‘DRIVE IT DAY’ CLASSIC CAR EVENT RETURNS TO CASTLE VIEW WINDSOR
Sunday 27 April 2025, 10am - 2.00pm
For those with a treasured classic vehicle, National Drive It Day is one of the first opportunities after the long winter to get it out for a run, and Castle View is again providing a coffee stop for participants to build into their itinerary.
Just a mile from the centre of Windsor and easily accessed from the M4 and M25, Windsor Great Park, Legoland and Ascot, Castle View will be open to all classic vehicle owners and those keen to view some beautiful classic cars.
“As great classic car enthusiasts ourselves, we thought it would be fun to host a coffee stop for anyone in the West London, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Surrey areas to get their old vehicles out. There’s no knowing what sort of vehicles will be here on the day, but last year we had a wonderful assortment of over 45 classic sports and saloon cars, and we can promise some tasty cakes produced by our talented homeowners,” says Karl Hallows, managing director of Castle View.
National Drive It Day was created by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) in 2005. It is the occasion when historic
vehicle enthusiasts and the public at large have the opportunity to celebrate the One Thousand Mile Trial organised in 1900 to prove the viability of the new invention, the motor vehicle. It is also a chance to raise awareness and support amongst the public for the historic vehicle movement and keeping transport heritage on UK roads, while also raising funds for the NSPCC’s Childline. Castle View is on Helston Lane, Windsor, Berkshire, SL4 5GG castleviewwindsor.co.uk
THE DETAILS
To join in, drivers can purchase a ‘Drive It Day’ car plaque from just £12.50 at driveitday.co.uk/ shop and just turn up on the day, no pre-booking required.

A DECADE OF DISTILLING IN SURREY
Silent Pool Gin is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a limited release gin, and a big party!
In 2014 a group of local friends set out to create a gin distillery on the banks of the beautiful Silent Pool in Albury, deep in the Surrey Hills National Landscape.
They converted dilapidated farm buildings into a working distillery with a restored vintage wood-fired steam boiler powering a hand-built copper still. They sourced local ingredients, including Surrey honey and lavender, and exotic botanicals to create a highly aromatic gin of rare taste and refinement. They named it Silent Pool Gin, after its home. Immediately popular amongst Surrey gin fans, Silent Pool Gin soon acquired a raft of awards and has amassed an enviable reputation across the world.
And, to this day, every single bottle of Silent Pool Gin is distilled and bottled at the distillery in Surrey.
A DECADE OF DISTILLING EXCELLENCE
Silent Pool 10th Anniversary Celebration Edition Gin is a limited-edition tribute to the passion, dedication, and artistry that has defined Silent Pool
Gin since its launch ten years ago.
It has been specifically crafted to highlight notes of pear - a nod to the earliest days at the distillery when it produced a pear eau de vie. This distinctive botanical delivers a delicious depth of flavour and aroma. Enjoy with elderflower tonic for a delightful G&T, or in a Martini or French 75. You can find more cocktail inspiration on the Silent Pool Distillers website.
JUNE 21ST - JOIN THE PARTY!
The distillery will be hosting its 10th birthday party on June 21st and everyone is invited to experience tastings, cocktail classes, live music and a great birthday atmosphere. Find out more at silentpooldistillers.com
BOOK A GUIDED TOUR OF THE DISTILLERY
Experience first-hand the passion and craftsmanship that go into every drop of gin.
The award-winning 90-minute tour (VisitEngland’s Best Told Story Accolade) takes you through the history of gin making and to the heart of the distillery where you will discover the unique production process, and taste the Silent Pool Gin range.
You can also book a range of gin-based experiences including a Perfect Pairings Experience in collaboration with neighbouring Albury Vineyard.
The distillery shop is open seven days a week and fully stocked with the entire Silent Pool Gin luxury gift range, and the Terrace Bar overlooking the pool is open every weekend in summer during the daytime for delicious gin cocktails.

In today’s digital age, where children’s screen time, social media use and rising anxiety are hot issues, many parents are seeking ways to help their children foster emotional resilience.
The West Horsley Place Trust manage 400 acres of beautiful estate in Surrey and a charming Grade 1 listed Manor House. Their aim in opening these treasures to the public is to enrich people’s wellbeing. They strongly believe that connecting with culture, heritage and nature can transform lives, at any age. New for 2025, they have launched a series of events for families and children to discover and explore the power of creativity.
Arts activities have been proven to provide wonderful benefits to children and their families. Children who engage with art perform better across academic subjects., but the creative arts go beyond supporting academic achievement. The arts have been shown to aid mental health, build confidence, and support the development of communication and teamwork, which can benefit children throughout their lives.
Art Adventures
For primary school children West Horsley Place will run a series of Art Adventures, events where talented professional artists will run drop-in workshops to encourage hands-on creativity.
The next Art Adventures will be in the Manor House and gardens on the Tuesday 15 April. Explore the theme of home, indoors and outdoors, with model making, interior design and wild hedge building. Then, in the barn, on Thursday 29 May, you can join them to get messy with clay and painted footprints.
Sign up to their mailing list to receive future dates.
Tots Tales
Sparking their child’s imagination at a young age is important to many parents and at West Horsley Place you can do so in beautiful surroundings. The Manor House will be open on select Wednesday mornings (starting Wednesday 23 April) for Tots Tales. These sensory play sessions will use storytelling and interactive play to bring the rich heritage to life.
Children’s Workshops
New for 2025, the charity is also running creative workshops for children and their carers. These sessions include Tudor Family Portraits (Wednesday 28 May), Puppet Animation (Monday 18 Aug) and Ghostly Encounters (Tuesday 29 July), where teenagers can learn how to be a filmmaker on the location of BBC Ghosts! Easter is coming
Easter is coming, and so are the Easter Eggs! Which one will you choose this year? We went along to visit Chris Bachmann at his multi award winning Weybridge Patisserie in the search of the perfect egg. We asked him, “What makes a Bachmanns Egg so special?”
“All our Easter Eggs and Bunnies are handmade with love on the premises. There are a few reasons why I think that our Easter products are the best in the UK. First, we use one of the finest couvertures in the world, sourced from a small manufacturer in Switzerland. It not only eats well on its own, but marries perfectly with other flavours. Not only is the chocolate perfectly tempered and therefore beautifully shiny, but unlike factory made products, the chocolate is poured into the moulds, allowed to set, and then another molten layer of chocolate is added. When this layer sets, it creates a tension or fault line between the layers, which improves the “snap” of the chocolate when eaten. Last, we also hand sculpt our eggs, adding a final exterior textured layer, and by adding chocolate flowers and hand made buttons, each egg becomes an individual work of chocolate art. It is the repeated lamination that makes the eggs break up delicately before melting in the mouth, and that is what truly sets them apart. However, this takes a lot of skill, and we have a great team here under Wayne Harris our head Chef, and our choclatier Dan Ellis.
Filled with either our legendary fresh cream truffles, or packed and encrusted with Crunchy Almond Rochers (baton almonds, macerated in cointreau, toasted with icing sugar over a hot flame, and mixed with melted chocolate and cocoa butter) our Eggs make an exquisite and unique gift for that special someone. We only make and stock our eggs for the three weeks between Mothers Day and Easter- that way we can pack them so that the products are super fresh and tasting their best- you know they haven’t been sitting around on a shelf in a warehouse for months and months.
“In fact, a couple of Easters ago, one lucky lady opened her Bachmanns egg to find a diamond and platinum engagement nestling inside. Bachmanns were asked to pack the ring in its box into a truffle filled 800g dark chocolate egg so the suitor could propose in style on Easter day.
“I must admit, I was quite relieved to get the ring and the egg back to the owner- it was a gorgeous piece of jewellery and I imagine it was extremely expensive. It was quite a compliment that we were trusted to look after it. I am delighted to say that we got a thank you letter from him and his new fiancé the week later”
New Ashgate Gallery presents a yearlong series of still-life exhibitions in their Foyer Gallery, showcasing leading contemporary artists who transform everyday objects into compelling works of art.
Still life has long been a powerful genre, capturing moments of quiet beauty, the passage of time, and the poetry of the ordinary. In 2025, the New Ashgate Gallery celebrates this enduring tradition with a curated programme of exhibitions that bring fresh perspectives to the art of still life. Featuring bold colour, intricate texture, and delicate observation, this series highlights the richness and diversity of contemporary still-life painting.
Until 26 April 2025, Angela A’Court’s “Objects of Contemplation” shifts the focus to soft pastel still lifes that embrace simplicity and texture. A’Court’s process is deeply tactile—she physically engages with her subjects, translating their presence into atmospheric, memory-infused compositions.
Annie Waring’s “A Sense of Calm” (3 May – 28 June 2025) brings a more meditative approach. Working in oils, she paints delicate arrangements of ceramics, flowers, and fruit, capturing a quiet elegance in the everyday. Her subtle use of light and tone invites viewers into a world of serenity
New Ashgate Gallery and balance.
The summer programme presents Sally Anne Fitter’s “The Poetry of Everyday Moments” (5 July – 6 September 2025), where still life and landscape merge in richly textured, layered compositions. Drawing on her background in textile design and ceramics, Fitter’s paintings are filled with collage, gold leaf, and dynamic surface work, celebrating the changing seasons and the beauty of simple forms.
The series concludes with Rosalinda Kightley’s “Surrey Artist of the Year 2024 for Kightley’s One Year On exhibition (13 September – 1 November 2025), marking the culmination of her award-winning practice. Her still lifes blend bold floral arrangements with exquisite detail, offering a vibrant and expressive finale to this ambitious programme.

Matisse: Drawing with Scissors
Until Sunday 11 May 2025. Lightbox Gallery, Woking
The French painter, sculptor and designer, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. His vibrant works are celebrated for their extraordinary richness and luminosity of colour and his spectacular paper cutouts were his final triumph.
Matisse: Drawing with Scissors, a Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition from the Southbank Centre - opening at Lightbox Gallery on Saturday 8 February (to Sunday 11 May 2025) - features 35 posthumous prints of the famous cut-outs that he produced in the last four years of his life, when confined to his bed. The exhibition includes many of his iconic images, such as The Snail and the Blue Nudes.
Matisse continued creating highly original works into his eighties. For his cut-outs he used paper, hand-painted with gouache, which he carved into with scissors: ‘the paper cut-out allows me to draw in the colour … Instead of drawing the outline and putting the colour inside it…I draw straight into the colour’. The colours he used were so strong that he was advised by his doctor to wear dark glasses.
The lithographic reproductions in this exhibition are taken from a special double issue of Verve, a review of art and literature, published by Matisse’s friend, the critic and fine art publisher Tériade, in 1958, four years after Matisse’s death. The
publication was planned during Matisse’s lifetime and the first lithographic plates were prepared under his direction a few days before he died.
Matisse began his working life as a lawyer, before going to Paris to study art in 1890. At first strongly influenced by the Impressionists, he soon created his own style, using brilliant, pure colours, and started making sculptures as well as paintings. In 1905 he and his colleagues were branded the Fauves (wild beasts) because of their unconventional use of colour, and it was during this time that he painted his celebrated Luxe, Calme et Volupté (Luxury, Tranquillity and Delight).
‘There is no gap between my earlier pictures and my cut-outs’, Matisse wrote; ‘I have only reached a form reduced to the essential through greater absoluteness and greater abstraction’.
Matisse: Drawing with Scissors will be a longstanding touring exhibition, taking residency at further locations following its presentation at Lightbox Gallery. These locations will be announced at a later date.

Spring in Bloom:
100,000 Tulips return to Hampton Court Palace. From 11th April – 5th May 2025
This Spring, Hampton Court Palace will once again burst into a breathtaking display of colour for the annual Tulip Festival. Historic Royal Palaces invites visitors to wander through one of the UK’s largest displays of award-winning planted tulips, where over 100,000 tulip bulbs will bring the Palace’s historic gardens to life.
Bright blooms will burst from every corner of the formal gardens and cobbled courtyards of Hampton Court Palace this April, with each bulb handpicked and planted by its expert gardening team. The Palace has a long association with the elegant tulip, as former resident Queen Mary II was a keen horticulturist and collected exotic plants to feature in the gardens.
In 2024, Graham Dillamore, Head Gardener at Hampton Court Palace, was awarded the World Tulip Award for Britain’s Largest and greatest Tulip Heritage Garden at the 9th World Tulip Summit.
Visitors can stroll through the grounds amidst

• Over 100,000 vibrant tulips will fill Fountain Court, the heart of Queen Mary II’s baroque palace.
• Floating tulip bowls will drift in the Great Fountain, showcasing a beautiful floral display.
• A vintage horse cart spilling tulips will take centre stage in Clock Court, offering a pictureperfect glimpse into the past.
• In the Kitchen Garden, a free style of planting, inspired by tulip fields in the Netherlands, will illustrate the diversity in tulip types.
• View rare, historic and specialist varieties in the Lower Orangery, some of which date back over five centuries.
• Palace Hosts will deliver daily Tulip Talks at 11.30am and 2.30pm in the Palace Wine Cellar, sharing the history of the most coveted flower of the 18th century and the Queen who introduced them to Hampton Court.
Celebrate the seasonal spectacle of tulips in bloom at this year’s festival by capturing the ultimate springtime photo opportunity, against the backdrop of one of Britain’s most stunning Tudor palaces, perfect for keen gardeners, flower enthusiasts or those looking for a fun-filled day out.

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS
The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions
Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.
Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.
The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.
“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.
The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.
Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.
“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Nurturing Resilient Minds
When selecting a school, parents increasingly value not just academic prowess but also the school’s dedication to pupils’ emotional and mental wellbeing. Traditionally, pastoral care focused on mental health, addressing issues as they arose. However, the 21st-century challenges faced by pupils necessitate a broader approach. The concept of mental fitness has emerged, emphasising a proactive and dynamic pursuit of mental strength, resilience, and adaptability.
Beyond academic pressures, today’s pupils grapple with a rapidly changing world, unprecedented societal expectations, and the omnipresence of digital connectivity. Traditional models of pastoral care, centred on reactive responses to mental health concerns, are revealing their limitations in addressing the multifaceted challenges pupils encounter. A reactive approach may also inadvertently stigmatise mental health concerns, perpetuating the notion that seeking support is reserved for times of crisis. Mental fitness, on the other hand, is about proactive wellbeing.
In response to this changing landscape, Feltonfleet’s Wellbeing Curriculum has evolved to transcend crisis intervention, and instead seek to actively instil practices fostering mental fitness. This includes resilience-building, emotional intelligence development, cognitive flexibility, and cultivating a growth mindset.
By dedicating curriculum time to mental health, mindfulness, mental fitness and elucidating the workings of the brain, we highlight the significance of individual wellbeing.
Mindfulness is a core component, equipping pupils to respond skilfully to the present moment, with open-minded curiosity and acceptance. Pupilled ‘mindful moments’ have become a daily ritual, aiding concentration and settling thoughts.
Wellbeing Wednesdays and a comprehensive co-curricular enrichment program at Feltonfleet further support emotional management and personal growth, as well as provide platforms for self-exploration and identify formation. Mixedage activities foster a sense of community and leadership among older pupils while easing younger pupils’ transition beyond the classroom.
Effective social tracking and comprehensive assessments by a dedicated pastoral team is at the heart of our philosophy, enabling a deep understanding of each pupil’s learning and emotional needs, and thus tailored support for each individual. This approach enables discreet steering and timely support for any emerging mental health risks, which might otherwise remain concealed.
Moving forwards, the imperative for schools is clear - to prepare pupils not only for academic success but also to be mentally agile and emotionally robust. As educators, our responsibility extends beyond reacting to mental health concerns; we must actively cultivate the mental strengths that empower pupils to face the challenges of tomorrow. It is crucial that these efforts continue to evolve and align with the emphasis placed on academic development. The wellbeing of pupils is not a mere complement but an integral determinant of their overall growth and ability to thrive in an ever-changing world.

British designers re-imagined florals, androgynous silhouettes and showcased contemporary takes on traditional femininity.
Here are five London Fashion Week trends we might all be wearing this year.
PILLBOX HATS
Emilia Wickstead’s 1960s collection inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s film, The Birds (1963), brought back an accessory that has already been slowly creeping onto the fashion scene since Copenhagen Fashion Week.
That is, of course, the pillbox hat.
Beginning as a form of military headgear, the pillbox hat was popularised by U.S. first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, who was famed for her signature block-colour hats that matched her outfits.
Kennedy was wearing a pink pillbox hat to match her Chanel suit on the day her husband, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated in Dallas, Texas in 1963.
While multiple retro tropes graced the

From retro motifs to modern twists: London Fashion Week provided a smorgasbord of style inspiration for 2025.
By Lara Owen
runway this season – from Burberry’s Eighties blouson bomber jackets to Chet Lo’s Noughties hair crimping –the most memorable fashion motif was certainly the revival of the pillbox hat.
EIGHTIES’ SILHOUETTES
Broad shoulders, bold prints, nipped-in waists and quaffed hair dominated the runway this season.
From Richard Quinn’s blouson blouses to Paul Costelloe’s full-waisted belts and S.S. Daley’s quaffed hair –it seems the 1980s is making a comeback in one way or another.
Many collections looked to archetypes of British pop culture this season, taking inspiration from musicians such
as The Smiths and Siouxsie Sioux.
“This season, we started with a desire to investigate the archetypes that carved out the idea of a very British wardrobe,” designer Steven Stokey-Daley told Vogue, “so taking the donkey jacket or the duffle coat or the trench coat and creating our very core everyday version of those.”
BOOKS AS ACCESSORIES
As observed at Erdem and JW Anderson’s collections last September, designers once again proved that books are the most sophisticated accessory.
Emilia Wickstead’s autumn/winter 2025 collection featured retro newspapers as clutches, which is a new take on the modern paperback as an outfit accompaniment.
Books and literature is increasingly playing a starring role in fashion discourse, as more celebrities are meaningfully photographed with their current reads as a status symbol and a small window into their personal interests.
At the spring/summer 2025 London Fashion Week, designer Erdem Moralioglu looked to book The Well Of Loneliness, a lesbian novel published in 1928 which was swiftly banned in England for the next two decades.
He used it as inspiration for his clothes that featured impeccable masculine tailoring of the 1920s, combined with the designer’s signature
ultra-feminine dresses.
It seems we may be swapping out our totes for book bags this coming season.
FAUX-FUR ACCENTS
Simone Rocha and Burberry were among the designers showcasing faux fur accents this season. While the ‘mob wife’ aesthetic brought back the extravagant fur coat last year, subtler trims were observed on this season’s runway, with lined leather jackets and faux fur stoles.
At Simone Rocha’s show, the Irish designer presented faux-fur coats sliced to ribbons halfway up from their hemlines – a gesture repeated across the collection.
Perhaps we’ll see deconstructed fur cropping up on the high street later this year.
CROPPED TROUSERS
Culottes, cropped trousers and breeches were another key trend spotted on the runways of Chet Lo, Bora Aksu and Conner Ives.
While Chloe’s spring/summer 2025 runway took the fashion world by storm with her boho lace pantaloons, it seems the cropped trouser trend isn’t just for summer.
Wool breeches, billowing culottes and crops graced both the runways and front rows this season.
Often paired with high riding boots – another trend that has permeated from last season – this season’s baggy cropped trousers evoked a blend of old-school country shooting attire and Noughties capri pants.

Lightweight foundations, BB creams and tinted moisturisers are on the rise as more people are aiming for a natural, ‘no make-up make-up’ aesthetic for day-to-day wear, rather than a full face.
There are now countless options to choose from, but your skin type and texture can be a deciding factor on which one you go for to ensure you get the dewy and glowing finish you desire.
We asked make-up artist Sarah-Jane Froom for a guide on what to look for based on specific skin concerns, as well as product recommendations tailored to each.
DRY SKIN
According to Froom, whose philosophy centres on enhancing natural beauty with a “less is more” approach, if you have dry skin it’s important to look for hydrating ingredients.
“You should look for products with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or vitamin E, which help retain moisture and prevent your skin from feeling tight,” says Froom.
“They should also look for a dewy or satin finish which helps restore radiance and prevent the skin from looking dull. Dry skin often also benefits from foundations that provide light to medium coverage, which helps even out the skin tone without clinging to dry patches.”
Find the best lightweight foundation for your skin type
The no make-up make-up look is becoming a game changer, but what does your skin need?
By Sara Keenan
SENSITIVE SKIN
“Those with sensitive skin should look for hypoallergenic and fragrance-free foundation as it reduces the risk of irritation. They should also look for products that are non-comedogenic as they won’t clog pores, especially if sensitive skin is also prone to breakout,” says Froom.
“For sensitive skin, choose a gentle formula that is mineral-based or lightweight, as breathable foundations are kind to sensitive skin.”
MENOPAUSAL SKIN
“As menopausal skin can become drier and thinner, people should look for products with added moisture and ingredients that help support the skin’s elasticity,” says Froom.
“Foundations that are light to medium coverage and can even out the skin tone without feeling too heavy are ideal. A foundation formula that can provide a soft, radiant finish to combat dullness.”
ROSACEA SKIN
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that mainly affects the face.
“People with this condition should look for products with chamomile, aloe vera, or green tea that help calm irritation and reduce redness. Full coverage should also mask the redness associated with rosacea, you may prefer a foundation with buildable coverage,” Froom advises.
“They should also avoid products with fragrances or harsh chemicals, which can exacerbate rosacea symptoms.”
ACNE-PRONE SKIN
“Those with acne should choose noncomedogenic foundations and tinted moisturisers that are specifically labelled as non-comedogenic to avoid clogging pores,” Froom says.
“Acne-prone skin often benefits from oil-free products with a matter finish to control shine and prevent breakouts. Heavy foundations can actually worsen acne so look for lightweight options that offer buildable coverage without feeling too thick.”
OILY SKIN
“If you have oily skin you should look for foundations with oil-absorbing ingredients such as silica, kaolin clay or salicylic acid,” Froom says.
“A matter finish also helps control shine and keep your complexion looking fresh throughout the day. You should also choose long-lasting, sweat-resistant foundations to keep your makeup in place.”
COMBINATION SKIN
“Things to look for in foundation if you have combination skin are lightweight products that hydrate the dry areas while controlling oil in the T-Zone,” Froom says.
“Combination skin often requires a foundation that can be built up in specific areas without being cakey. Lastly a satin finish is ideally as it provides a nice balance between matte and dewy, making it ideal for combination skin.
OTHER SKIN TYPES
“For other skin concerns such as dry or aging skin, you should always opt for foundations that are nourishing, hydrating and gentle,” says Froom.
“Make sure to look for non-comedogenic, fragrance-free products, and avoid those with harsh chemicals or alcohol, which can irritate delicate or mature skin.”

Orangeries: A Year-Round Haven of Comfort and Style
Discover how modern orangeries stay cosy in winter and cool in summer, thanks to advanced glazing, insulation, and design for year-round luxury
It’s a common misconception that orangeries are too cold in winter and uncomfortably hot in summer. In reality, a modern orangery can be your favourite spot in the house— welcoming and cosy when there’s a chill in the air, and airy and refreshing on even the warmest days. By blending clever design with high-quality materials, today’s orangeries are far more than just pretty glass additions.
Smart Roofing and Ventilation
The roof itself is just as vital as the walls. Insulated roof lanterns or skylights allow plenty of natural light to flood in, creating a bright, uplifting space all year round. Thanks to built-in insulation, these features prevent heat from escaping during winter. Plus, roof vents or opening skylights are great for letting hot air out when the weather’s balmy, so your orangery never feels stuffy.
Heating and Cooling Solutions
Modern orangeries often use underfloor heating to maintain a comfortable, even warmth without the need for bulky radiators. This helps keep the space feeling snug on frosty winter mornings, and it’s a delight to step onto a warm floor. For the occasional heatwave, discreet air conditioning units or ceiling fans can make a world of difference. Whether you’re reading the Sunday papers in January or hosting a lively summer party, you’ll find the temperature just right.
Quality Materials and Thoughtful Design
A stylish orangery should not only be practical but also complement your home’s look and reflect your taste. Build it traditionally with high-efficiency internal blocks, cavity wall insulation, and matching bricks to blend with the existing house. Add automated blinds or curtains for privacy and temperature control, ensuring comfort and appeal.
Enhancing Surrey Living
In Surrey’s beautiful residential areas, an expertly crafted orangery adds immediate appeal and value. More than an extension, it’s a statement of comfort and style that ensures you can enjoy your garden views in every season. By embracing the latest in glazing, insulation, and climate control, you’ll discover that an orangery is genuinely a space for all weathers—a place where warm winter evenings and breezy summer afternoons merge into one, delightful haven of relaxation. surreyorangery.co.uk
The Importance of Great Glazing
A big part of what makes orangeries so versatile is the glazing. Modern double or triple-glazed units come with advanced coatings that keep the heat in during cold snaps while also shielding you from excessive sun when the temperature rises. In other words, you’ll be warm in winter without cranking up the heating, yet sheltered from the blazing summer sun. Large bi-fold or sliding doors can further improve ventilation, giving you a pleasant breeze on those sunny afternoons.
A Space that Suits You
Because of these modern innovations, you can truly make an orangery your own. Maybe you’d like a light-filled dining area for family meals, or a chic lounge to curl up with a book and a cup of tea. Perhaps a work-from-home sanctuary overlooking the garden is what you’re after. Thanks to robust insulation and flexible layouts, your orangery can effortlessly adapt to your lifestyle, no matter the time of year.
A Room for Everyone!
By Martin Ralton from Garden Rooms by Drumbeat in Woking.
Why are Garden Rooms becoming so popular?
Everyone will have noticed the recent trend of new rooms appearing in the rear gardens of houses large and small. These are not the traditional timber sheds with a bit of carpet thrown on the floor. These are beautiful wellbuilt rooms with light streaming in through bifold doors, and pictures on the wall, and sofas, and workspaces, and tv’s showing sport, and yoga mats, and artists’ easels, and anything to embrace the feeling of an escape from the house. These are the new ‘Garden Rooms’ where you can work, relax and entertain.
So, what are the main uses for a Garden Room?
First place goes to the home office. An escape from the dining room table or the spare bedroom. A psychological break, away from the demands and temptations of the house, and a calm independent environment to concentrate on the opportunities of the work-day.
Second place goes to the home Gym. During covid lockdown people installed a treadmill or an exercise bike in the hallway but now there is a fantastic space with fresh air and light at the end of the garden.
After that, the teenage hangout-room comes in third place. The kids are not banished; but, at last, they have their own space to do gaming stuff, watch incomprehensible tv, and not be embarrassed by parents and siblings.
But let us not forget the vast army of musicians, and model makers and hobbyists and bridge players who just need their own space.
What can you build and do you need planning permission?
The general rule is that if your room is a maximum of 2.5M high and doesn’t take over half the garden
you can build under ‘Permitted Development’ rules and you don’t need planning permission. However, there are many more complex regulations and a specialist builder or designer should be able to help with what is allowed. Anything that might include overnight accommodation will need planning permission.
Can a Garden Room add value to your house?
There is much anecdotal evidence that a well-built, well-insulated garden room can add between 5% and 15% to the value of your property. This is particularly true of smaller properties where an office in the garden is a sought-after feature.
So how do you get a Garden Room?
There are several specialist Garden Room builders and designers who serve the local communities in Surrey. Choose a local professional company who can offer advice, a guarantee for their work and show you a portfolio of good quality garden rooms in the area.
A garden is no longer a place for stripes on the lawn and a collection of roses. It is an asset, and a place to embrace the opportunities of a work-life balance.

GARDEN DESIGN & PLANTING SPECIALISTS
Laurel Hill Gardens is an award-winning garden design studio based in the Surrey Hills, offering consultation, design services, and advice on all styles of gardens.
Paula Holland Founder of Laurel Hill Gardens trained at Merrist Wood, gaining her certification with distinction. She was soon designing a large Sensory Garden at Hampton Court for the RNIB. Two thousand plants, a heatwave and a very slow tap for watering! However, great teamwork and an amazing experience culminated in winning the People’s Choice Award. Paula still regularly works with the landscapers that helped build the garden. Roll forward seven years and she has designed and built gardens of all shapes and sizes – from tiny urban roof terraces to large country gardens and everything in between. She works with several skilled craftsmen to build bespoke oak pergolas and features. Installing sustainable irrigation systems and lighting systems, both of which are often overlooked, to make a garden which is both
manageable and give a wow factor even at night.
Paula says “People often ask me why they should choose Laurel Hill Gardens rather than someone else, and whilst I could wax lyrical on that subject, the truth is that I am plant obsessed! I have spent years studying the subject at the Plant School, so much so I ended up teaching about Plants.
One common misconception is that Garden Design is always about starting from scratch, when half of my work is as much about renovating from an existing framework.
You can completely transform a garden from enhancing the planting and a fresh pair of eyes with a wide base of experience goes a long way. The good news with that, is that the planting always transforms a space rather than having to re-build existing hard landscaping, and is often less expensive than people expect.”
If you would like to talk gardens big or small Paula would love to hear from you 0771 408 8153. @laurelhillgardens laurelhillgardens.co.uk

A POOL FOR EVERYONE
There are so many reasons to choose Easy Pools…
GREAT DESIGNS AND SPEED OF INSTALLATION
Easy Pool’s huge modular range means that there is a shape and size to suit everyone. Gone are the days when building a pool meant having builders on site for weeks on end, not to mention delays caused by rain.
Most pools in the range are completed in a few weeks. Compare that to a concrete pool that can take months to complete, during which time your garden looks a mess. Pool sizes range from 4m to 12m with flat or sloped bases. There are currently short lead times as most models are in stock.
SMOOTH FINISH
Leisure Pools fibreglass swimming pools have a smooth, clean gelcoat finish that is non-abrasive.
MAINTENANCE-FREE
The gelcoat finish on a Leisure Pool not only looks great, it is also so easy to look after. The surface is smooth and non-porous so it cleans easily and is very stain resistant.
COLOUR RANGE
Leisure Pools offers an exclusive range of seven beautiful colours, each with its own sparkle and shimmer finish, ensuring you will be able to find the ideal colour to suit your home, taste and budget.
COMPATIBILITY
Salt chlorinators, chlorine, freshwater systems and ozone systems all work wonderfully well with Leisure Pools fiberglass pools. Whatever your choice may be, it will be compatible.
SAFETY FOR CHILDREN AND PETS
Automatic safety covers comply with all EU regulations. Many pool owners have children or grandchildren or entertain friends with children. When owning a pool where kids will be playing, safety is a major concern. The side of a swimming pool can often be slick and hard to grasp for children. The safety ledge allows children to stand on the ledge and grasp the side of the pool. This can be helpful for children learning to swim, and can provide parents with added peace of mind..
WARRANTY
If you are getting quotes, ask if a lifetime warranty is being provided on the structure of the swimming pool. At best with a concrete pool you will get a seven-year warranty. Do you hope to have a pool for longer than that? The manufacturer is so certain that they build the world’s best composite pools, that they offer a Lifetime Structural Warranty and a Lifetime Structural Osmosis Warranty on all swimming pools.

Introducing Arbour
Lose yourself in the drama of Arbour – a new wall mural from By Haleys
Unapologetically dramatic, a new wall mural from family-run design house By Haleys offers a new take on floral wall coverings.
With tall tree trunks stretching skywards and luscious foliage bursting from every angle, Arbour is bold and brave.
It depicts a striking forest scene, complete with fast-flowing stream, that offers an escape from reality. Its canopy of leaves and branches weave a natural ceiling and envelopes homeowners in a fantasy woodland adventure.
Richard Haley, Creative Director of By Haleys, said: “With Arbour, we wanted to create a mural that showed both the opulence and majesty of the natural world in a very theatrical way.
“Botanical and nature-inspired wallcoverings can be quite subtle, but we wanted to create something that was bold and brooding.
“Colour is key, and we carefully curated a palette that transitions seamlessly from fiery warmth to cool serenity, creating a dynamic tapestry that
captures the essence of a forest bathed in everchanging light.”
The wall mural was brought to life by Design Director Geoff Haley, an artist with more than 40 years’ experience in the interiors’ industry.
“With Arbour, we wanted to create a mural that showed both the opulence and majesty of the natural world in a very theatrical way.
Botanical and natureinspired wallcoverings can be quite subtle, but we wanted to create something that was bold and brooding”
It was inspired by the landscapes of West Yorkshire and hand-painted by Geoff, and the mural depicts every paint stroke adding a unique textural appearance.

Resin Bound: The Smart Choice for LongLasting, Sustainable Driveways
Since 2004, Oltco has been transforming outdoor spaces with high-quality resin bound surfaces. This innovative solution has become a top choice for homeowners and businesses, offering a seamless, durable, and stylish alternative to traditional driveways, patios, and pathways.
and harsh weather conditions without cracking or fading. The smooth, non-slip finish also enhances safety, making it a practical choice for driveways, pathways, and even large-scale commercial projects. Available in a variety of colours and stone blends, resin bound can be customised to complement any property’s aesthetic.
In 2019, Oltco introduced Recycle Bound, a pioneering solution that incorporates recycled plastic waste into resin bound surfaces. This innovative product has helped recycle the equivalent of over 800 million plastic straws, offering an eco-friendly option without compromising strength or durability. Each square metre of Recycle Bound contains the equivalent of 3,000 plastic straws, turning waste into a valuable resource.
One of the key benefits of resin bound surfaces is their permeability. Unlike concrete or block paving, resin bound allows water to drain naturally, helping to prevent puddles and reducing flood risks. This makes it a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS) compliant option, ideal for both residential and commercial properties. Additionally, resin bound surfaces require minimal maintenance—there are no loose stones, weeds struggle to grow, and the surface remains in excellent condition for years with just occasional cleaning.
Durability is another major advantage. Resin bound surfaces are built to withstand heavy use
While Recycle Bound is popular for residential properties, it has also been installed in high-profile commercial spaces, including hotels and attractions. With plastic pollution continuing to be a global challenge, Oltco’s Recycle Bound provides a practical and sustainable solution. Oltco stands by its commitment to quality with an industry-leading guarantee of up to 20 years. Whether you choose traditional resin bound or the eco-friendly Recycle Bound, you’re investing in a driveway that is built to last.

AN INTERVIEW WITH LUXURY DESIGNER MARINA HUGHES
It is not just sumptuous furnishings, elegant colour pallets and flawless craftsmanship which defines Interior Designer Marina Hughes. “For me, luxury is about awakening all the senses, from the texture of a fabric to the touch of a surface, great design should feel as good as it looks.”
This approach has seen Marina’s meteoric rise as an award winning independent interior designer, setting up on her own in 2022 after several years consulting at one of the UK’s leading interior design houses.
We talked to her about the secret to her success and her ever growing portfolio of high-end projects throughout the Home Counties.
Marina started her creative journey as an artist, followed by several years designing for various high end spa and hotel resorts. It is this combination of creativity, coupled with the demands of five star luxury that sits at the heart of her design ethos.
In addition to the aesthetic and tactile qualities of her designs, Marina attaches particular importance to the sense of smell which she believes can evoke memories and have a positive impact on mood and wellbeing,
“Put simply, I want to bombard the senses into euphoric submission.”
Her experience in the luxury spa and hotel sector, where everything must be perfect, has brought a precision to her work which few designers possess. This eye for detail influences everything she does from the placement of
lighting through to the hanging of art.
“The individual elements of a room must work on their own, but more importantly the overall visual and sensory impact of the entire room must be coherent and collectively inspiring,” she says.
Whilst she is often given a free rein to execute her own ideas and style, Marina stresses the importance of listening to her clients and incorporating their suggestions into the final designs.
“I never lose sight of the fact that this is their home and should reflect the qualities and values they hold dear, Marina adds. “Most people have a prized possession or a work of art which has a deeply personal meaning to them. These will often be the starting point for any scheme, rather than an after-thought.”
As well as aesthetics, quality workmanship is central to Marina’s playbook. Most of the furniture she includes in her designs is bespoke – handmade by one of the craftspeople in her own black book of master joiners.
Marina Hughes Interiors also provides a comprehensive interior architecture service, beginning with a meticulous space planning exercise to achieve the ideal layout for the space.

SUMMER COLOURS
Tap into Tangerine Orange and Butter Yellow this Season with Casa by Josephine Jenno
This season’s major trend colours are about bringing warmth, comfort and security to out homes - An Exploration of Tangering and Butter Yellow. As people seek both comfort and expression in uncertain times, this citrus-inspired shade delivers a psychological boost while remaining surprisingly easy to style in various and spaces and easy to add a pop of freshness
The humble butter yellow is experiencing a delicious revival in interiors this season, spreading warmth across design-forward homes with its understated optimism. Unlike its showier cousin sunshine yellow, this creamy, softened hue evokes the comforting nostalgia of farmhouse kitchens while feeling unexpectedly contemporary when applied to modern silhouettes.
“It’s a color that shifts beautifully throughout the day, appearing rich and golden in morning light, then mellowing to a sophisticated neutral by evening.” Says Josephine Jenno Founder of casa by Josephine Jenno The versatile shade pairs effortlessly with natural materials—think pale oak, rattan, and matte ceramics—while providing the perfect backdrop for the season’s botanical influences.
After years of cool grays and sterile whites, this warm neutral offers precisely the ingredient our homes have been craving. casabyjj.com
