CAIT OPPER MANN Des couleurs saturées, un flash qui marque les ombres et souligne les corps, un style quasi-documentaire : bienvenue dans l’univers de Set Piece, la série de la photographe américaine Cait Oppermann. Ici, on parle de foot féminin, et la féminité ne fait certainement pas défaut à ses images. Peut-être est-ce la principale force du travail de la photographe : cette capacité à mêler transpiration, muscles saillants, lumières crues, douceur d’une main posée sur une épaule, coquetterie d’une pédicure, finesse d’un visage. Considéré à tort comme une discipline réservée aux hommes – historiquement interdite à leurs consœurs pendant plusieurs décennies –, le football connaît de plus en plus d’adeptes chez les femmes. Peu représenté dans les médias, le football féminin est encore assez méconnu, les joueuses, même professionnelles, ignorées. C’était sans compter sur la fascination de Cait Oppermann pour le ballon rond, qui livre avec Set Piece les coulisses de la National Women’s Soccer League, la ligue professionnelle aux États-Unis, sans fioritures et sans clichés. caitoppermann.com
Saturated colors, with flash outlining shadows and emphasizing bodies, its style emulating a documentary: Welcome to the universe of Set Piece, a series by American photographer Cait Oppermann. The motif is women’s football, and femininity is by no means lacking in her images. Perhaps herein lies the primordial force underlying the photographer’s task, namely the ability to blend perspiration, bulging muscles, and harsh light with the gentleness of a hand placed on a shoulder, the longing for the elegance of a pedicure or the delicateness of an expression. Once wrongfully deemed the exclusive realm of men—and historically, women were prohibited from it for several decades—soccer has since seen a rising number of strong women players. Paid little regard by the media, women’s soccer remains relatively little-known and its players, even professional ones, ignored.That is to say aside from the enthusiasm Cait Oppermann shows for the game in Set Piece, venturing behind the scenes of the United States National Women’s Soccer League, without frills or clichés. 14

Les émotions, les sensations physiques que procure un lieu, un moment, sont de pures abstractions. Elles sont difficiles à décrire et à mettre en forme. Katrin Koenning, elle, en est capable. Sa démarche photographique est sensorielle. Elle s’articule autour de son rapport à l’espace et donne corps à l’immatériel. Si la lumière est une langue, Katrin la maîtrise comme si elle la parlait depuis toujours. La plupart des images présentées ici sont tirées de Indefinitely, un travail au long cours mené de 2007 à 2015. Il s’agit d’un documentaire sur sa famille. Une série qui parle d’amour, à travers laquelle la photographe explore les espaces infinis du quotidien. Ces vides sont en fait des pleins. Ce qui est récurrent dans les images de Katrin. The emotions and physical sensations borne by a place or moment are sheer abstractions. They are hard to put into words or form.Yet Katrin Koenning achieves just this, applying a sensory approach to photography. It manifests itself through its relation to space and lends shape to the immaterial. Using light as her language, Katrin masters it as though it were her native tongue. Most of the images presented here are extracts from Indefinitely, a long-term project carried out from 2007 to 2015. This series documents her family, evoking love and enabling the photographer to sound the infinite depths of day-to-day life. In fact, these voids abound with essence. This theme recurs time and again throughout Katrin’s images. Each photo tells a unique tale which touches, takes hold of, and affects us. 38

Fortement inspiré par le cinéma, Rory Hamovit a imaginé des compositions monochromes qui ne sont pas sans rappeler les ambiances si particulières des films de David Lynch, Fritz Lang ou Buster Keaton. Visitations est une ode à la bizarrerie. L’empreinte d’un monstre au fond du jardin, un étrange éclair qui déchire l’horizon en plein jour, un voisin et son chien déguisés en fantômes… Les mises en scène du photographe évoquent tantôt l’horreur, tantôt l’épouvante, mais c’est toujours avec une grande intelligence et beaucoup d’humour. Chaque image est un récit singulier dont Rory est le narrateur – et bien souvent aussi le personnage principal. Sa facilité à créer des intrigues, son sens méticuleux du détail et son écriture atypique produisent un résultat épatant. Si la spontanéité n’a pas sa place dans Visitations, les photographies de Rory sont terriblement vivantes. Elles font résonner en nous l’écho de nos propres angoisses, passées ou présentes. ov i t Deriving great inspiration from cinema, Rory Hamovit has conceived monochromatic compositions not unlike the distinctive ambiances of films by David Lynch, Fritz Lang, or Buster Keaton. Visitations is an ode to oddity. The footprint of a monster in the backyard, a peculiar lightning bolt ripping through the horizon in plain daylight, a neighbor and his dog dressed up as ghosts… His photographic motifs sometimes elicit horror and sometimes terror, though always with a healthy dose of wit and cunning. Each image tells its own unique tale, with Rory as the narrator—and quite often as the protagonist as well. His effortless plot-creation and meticulous attention to detail converge with his unorthodox writing style to form a tantalizing product. Although lacking in spontaneity, Rory’s Visitations series teems with life. Deep within us, his photographs stir our own anxieties, whether past or present. In the end, are our fears not the expression of our own oddity? As far as Rory is concerned, there is no doubt. 44
