Designed by Paul Clark of Auckland-based Studio2 architects, this two-level beach house on the Coromandel Peninsula aesthetically reflects its coastal environment. It subtly builds on the experience of being so close to the sea, with a series of indoor and outdoor spaces that flow into each other and can be used in different ways.

The Scandinavian-style interiors, lined with American oak, create a tranquil space for the family to socialise, relax and cook together during their breaks from the city. “A logical layout is always key to entertaining.” says the architect.

“This is a family that likes to cook together and socialise together, so this kitchen is designed to do that efficiently.

It’s a thoroughly social experience and a space that everyone can be part of.” explains Clarke.

To achieve this, Clarke placed Fisher & Paykel double wall ovens and integrated fridge-freezer at opposite ends of the space. The five-burner hob is in the middle, opposite the stainless steel sink and the two DishDrawer™ Dishwashers housed in the island.

THE HEART OF THE HOME The kitchen has not only evolved but it has also relocated.

It has gradually moved from the back of the house to occupy the centre of the home. Not just the place where food is prepared, it is also the place where food is shared.

MARK ELMORE, GENERAL MANAGER, DESIGN AT FISHER & PAYKEL, HAS BEEN DESIGNING KITCHEN APPLIANCES FOR DECADES. THE SOCIOLOGICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL CHANGES IN HOW WE THINK ABOUT WHAT A KITCHEN IS HAVE ALL INFORMED HIS DESIGN PHILOSOPHY.

WE ARE WHAT WE EAT Sometimes we just want to heat up some leftovers, other times we want to create gastronomic feasts to impress. This range of cooking – from fast food to slow food and back again – affects the way in which we must design kitchens and the appliances that go in them.

We are eating more healthily – or at least trying to do so, our palettes are much more global, and yet we also want to eat more local. A focus on fresh food impacts requirements for storage, handling and preparation.

DESIGN FREEDOM In the professional kitchen, it is the chef that is the master, whereas in the home kitchen, the technology sometimes has to work harder to make us look good.

It’s not just about physical ergonomics but also about cognitive ergonomics – it’s about how appliances make us feel. Domestic appliances are required to be multidisciplinary, they must be intuitive to use, give us a high level of control and precision, and have the capacity to flex and improvise.

Kitchen cabinets are looking more like furniture and we have made sure that our appliances integrate seamlessly.

Our integrated column fridges, for example, fit flush into cabinetry with mere 3mm gaps.

OUTSIDE THE TRIANGLE The working triangle, based on a single person time-andmotion study, brought production line efficiency into the kitchen. But now we create, we experiment. Cooking is often a collaborative act. Functionality is still essential, but now we tinker and take our time over a recipe.

DISTRIBUTED APPLIANCES We have had to rethink the concept of the working triangle, separating the components by use and task.

Our design concept is about Distributed Appliances – allowing us to configure the kitchen to suit the way we work and live. Now it is possible to have a CoolDrawer™ Multi-temperature Drawer for drinks by the dining table, perhaps a DishDrawer™ Dishwasher for crockery by the sink and one for glasses by the bar.
