For more than 100 years, The Ohio State University Max M. Fisher College of Business has served as a recognized leader in business education, research and innovative partnerships. Its purpose — to create ideas, encourage scholars and develop leaders who positively impact their communities and the world — is influenced by the tenets of Max M. Fisher, a business leader, entrepreneur, statesman and philanthropist.
With consistently top-ranked programs, world-renowned faculty thought leaders and abundant engagement opportunities to enhance leadership competencies and professional development, ours is a community dedicated to advancing the practice of business.

At Fisher, we create principled leaders who are entrepreneurial in spirit, globally aware and socially responsible.
Message from the Dean
On behalf of the Max M. Fisher College of Business community, I want to thank you for taking an interest in exploring the many ways education, research and outreach is shaping the future of business here at The Ohio State University.
While COVID-19 was an unprecedented global hardship, Fisher remained resilient and emerged even stronger than before the pandemic. We continued to innovate our programs and launched several new online offerings, we increased enrollment and remained steadfast and focused on advancing the college’s research agenda.
The stories and information in this report demonstrate the impact that our faculty thought leaders and researchers are having on the practice of business; the impact of our students, staff, alumni, friends and corporate partners here on campus and in communities around the world; and the impact of our curriculum and programs on our students.
From creating new knowledge through research, developing innovative degree programs designed to address real-time challenges to offering access to lifelong
learning through new certificates and micro-credentials, continuous innovation remains a guiding principle in all we do. These enhancements to our academic and research portfolios, of course, are shaped by the strong relationships we continue to build with our partners. Whether through campus visits and recruiting, sponsored student projects, philanthropy, executive education or collaboration with our faculty and research centers of excellence, we offer endless opportunities for companies and organizations to connect with us in meaningful and beneficial ways.
I encourage you to spend just a few minutes learning more about our college, our passion for pushing the boundaries of education and research, and our commitment to working with industry to positively shape business today — and tomorrow!
Sincerely,
Anil K. Makhija Dean, Fisher College of Business
John W. Berry, Sr. Chair in Business

At the time of its construction, the six-building, 370,000 square-foot complex was the largest multi-building construction project ever undertaken by the university and it remains one of the few fully integrated management education campuses in the nation.
Fisher’s campus features five academic buildings, a hotel (the Blackwell Inn and Conference Center) and support offices dedicated to student services and resources such as career management, global experiences and diversity, equity and inclusion.

Our strategic plan: Champions of Change
At The Ohio State University, being a champion — one who rises above challenges to reach new heights of success — is an expectation, not an aspiration. It is this mentality that drives the Fisher College of Business community as we face a rapidly changing landscape within business education.
Learn about our pursuit of purposeful change, outstanding impact and the commitment to a set of core values, which empowers us: to lead with integrity and create principled leaders; to practice empathy and appreciate all perspectives; to embrace diversity and benefit from our differences; and to build an inclusive community that values social responsibility as part of our special land grant mission, so that we may nurture creativity, innovation and, ultimately, eminence.
What distinguishes Fisher from the rest?
It is our rigorous, action-based curriculum and real-world experience that prepare students to discover passions and launch careers. With a focus on leadership development, global awareness, entrepreneurial curiosity and commitment to community, Fisher equips students to make an immediate impact all over the world.
What does continuous innovation look like at Fisher?
It’s the creation of programs and degrees designed to solve the challenges of business as it’s happening. From harnessing the power of data and business analytics, to educating leaders on the complexities of today’s markets and supply chains, we’re continuously enhancing our portfolio of degrees to keep pace with a dynamic business landscape.
Fisher is investing in cutting-edge technology to launch in-demand distance learning opportunities for students and partners so access to Fisher’s depth and breadth of knowledge is at one’s fingertips. Global businesses and organizations are partnering with Fisher at an unprecedented rate, eager to gain knowledge and skill sets needed to maintain a competitive edge in today’s ever-evolving marketplace. We continue to innovate and spark transformational ideas and create leaders who make the world a better place.

Faculty at Fisher College of Business are creators of research tools, founders of academic journals and originators of programs that have — for more than a century — advanced and elevated students, businesses and industries around the world. These thought leaders serve as a strong foundation for business education at The Ohio State University, creating ideas, encouraging scholars and developing leaders who positively impact their communities and the world.
What is thought leadership at Fisher?

Hedge fund fees
Investors who put their money in hedge funds may find that the fees are much higher than expected, suggests a study conducted by Itzhak Ben-David, the Neil Klatskin Chair in Real Estate and Finance, and Associate Professor of Finance Justin Birru.
Most hedge funds charge their clients incentive fees of about 20 percent of gains made over a specified benchmark. But in a study of 6,000 hedge funds over 22 years, researchers found that those fees ended up costing investors nearly 50 percent — about 2.5 times more than the average fee rate on paper.
Gender differences and deadlines
Assistant Professor of Marketing
Grant Donnelly finds that a major reason why women are less likely than men to ask for more time to complete projects is a concern about burdening others.
Wartime supply chains
The Russian invasion of Ukraine triggered an unprecedented outpouring of humanitarian and military aid. Protecting those supply chains is essential for delivering material to the frontlines, writes Vince Castillo, an assistant professor of marketing and logistics and an Iraq War veteran with wartime logistics experience.
Is ‘me time’ a waste of time?
Diversity and the delivery driver
From the disclosure of delivery information designed to improve our online shopping satisfaction to examining the biases that we may not know we hold, research by Associate Professor of Logistics Terry Esper is helping companies reexamine and improve driver safety and their delivery processes.
Cause-related marketing’s dark side
Good causes aren’t always good for business. Research from Annibal Sodero, assistant professor of marketing and logistics, reveals how unpredictable variability associated with cause-related marketing can backfire on a brand.
Good for business and the environment
What can we learn from companies’ climate change disclosures?
A lot, actually. Research from Assistant Professor of Operations Christian Blanco reveals how companies’ understanding of their environmental impact has improved over the past 20 years.
Learning to lead
Renowned leadership expert and Alutto Chairholder Timothy A. Judge shares that we’re looking in all the wrong places for leadership knowledge. He explains the inherent skills and learned principles behind effective leadership.
Marketing Professors Selin Malkoc and Rebecca Walker Reczek, Berry Chair of New Technologies in Marketing, explain how revaluing leisure can provide big benefits.

Giving back and guiding career seekers
Cynthia Harris (MBA ’13) jumped at the chance to meet with current Fisher students who, with the help of the OCM, were embarking on their search for their first post-graduate jobs.
“The office was incredible for me when I was a graduate student, so the opportunity to give back specifically to that office was really exciting,” said Harris, who is now the founder of 8:28 Consulting, a marketing research firm.
The session was part of “Networking at Noon,” a series of virtual talks hosted by the OCM throughout 2020 and 2021 that connected Fisher students with successful alumni whose careers have been shaped by the office and its services.
Harris’s presentation included insight and advice for current students as she shared her own journey. The session ended up being a win-win for Harris as well as Emily Hong (MBA ’21), a student at the time, who later became an intern for Harris.
“She was interested in qualitative research, so she reached out, we connected and formed a relationship,” Harris said.
Hong went on to secure a full-time position with another local organization, which she was able to land in part due to her internship with Harris.

Lessons in leadership
Fisher students have access to a multitude of opportunities to develop their leadership skills through the work of the Fisher Leadership Initiative (FLI). FLI provides immersive, evidence-based and experiential programs that explore leadership — programs such as the Crisis Leadership Case Competition.
Offered in partnership with the Honors Cohort program, the competition provides all undergraduate students with the opportunity to hone their team leadership, communication, problem solving and decision-making skills in a real-world business crisis simulation. To date, approximately 8,500 students have participated in the award-winning program.
The Dean’s Leadership Academy is a great option for undergraduate students looking to develop their leadership abilities, as well as progress their skills and abilities. Leadership through mentorship
The Alumni Undergraduate Mentor Program pairs second-and third-year students with Fisher alumni and friends of the college to connect on a monthly basis — either in person or virtually if the mentor is outside of central Ohio. The program, which runs throughout the academic year, provides students with guided goal setting and checkpoints, as well as events such as networking etiquette dinners, an Ohio State hockey game and a behind-the-scenes tour of Ohio Stadium.
The Fisher Alumni Undergraduate Mentor Program has been very helpful. Bradley, my mentor, is an alumnus who’s interested in helping students like me. The program has been very beneficial in helping me figure out my final course load at Ohio State, my career afterward, and it has set me up for success.”
Joey Schrettner (BSBA ’19)
Having the opportunity to pay forward by sharing my own experiences to help students with everything from career discernment and interviewing, to academics and campus life, has been a wonderful experience, and I look forward to participating for years to come. An entrepreneurial spirit that transcends borders
Amber Hammond (BSBA ’15) knows an entrepreneur’s motivation can strike from the most unexpected places — an idea developed over a cup of coffee and scribbled on a paper napkin; a well-planned digital presentation for a class; or as Amber knows, it can come from a seed, planted during a global experience, that uncovers a new world through the eyes of a different culture.
During a trip to Colombia more than four years ago, she saw, firsthand, the impact of poverty and hunger in Colombia — a child in a nearby village had died overnight from malnutrition. The death shook her.
“I was devastated and it shook the very foundation of what I believed to be true — that we live in a fair world, that people who work hard will be rewarded,” Amber says of the inequity she witnessed. “But, before my eyes, I saw a group of people who worked from sun up to sun down but still weren’t able to afford something as basic as food. I wanted to make it right. That’s a lofty goal, and not one I can accomplish myself, but I couldn’t walk away from the experience and do nothing.”
34
Amber, who specialized in international business at Fisher, put her entrepreneurial spirit and her business skills to work creating Ciela Handmade. The venture sells fashion accessories made by 30 matriarchal clans that comprise Colombia’s largest indigenous group. Derived from the Spanish word for “sky,” the company embodies Amber’s belief that everyone born under the same sky should have access to the same opportunities.
A creator of possibility and potential, Amber’s goal is to help women and children in Colombia escape the cycle of poverty and to prevent starvation from taking another life. Ciela Handmade partners with local organizations in La Guajira to provide education and entrepreneurial training to women and at-risk youth in the country.

Message from the Chief Diversity Officer
When I had the honor of being named the college’s first chief diversity officer in late 2019, I remember thinking, “Where do I start?” The surreal scenes from the hatred and violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, were still fresh memories. A pandemic was looming, and the killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd hadn’t yet ignited our national reckoning over race and equity.
The next three years — for many reasons — were a whirlwind. But amid the chaos and tension, our Fisher community came together to elevate diversity, equity and inclusion to the forefront of all we do as a college.
Our students reaffirmed their commitment to our shared values, including the belief that, at Fisher, Hate Has No Business Here. This simple, yet powerful statement, sparked the foundation for a college-wide campaign that’s visible the moment you step onto our campus.
Our faculty and staff piloted the creation of new initiatives, such as the Fisher Inclusion Champions program, while strengthening existing resources, including the college’s Diversity Committee.
Learn more about Fisher’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
And our alumni, friends and partners renewed their engagement with us through new events, webinars and programming designed to reshape diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) at Fisher and to reemphasize its importance to the success of all businesses and industries.
As proud as I am of our progress these last few years, I’m even more excited by what lies ahead for us.
We’ll continue to scale new programs and events to build even stronger connections within our community. We’ll continue to seek additional resources and support for academic offerings that will open doors of opportunity for more students. And we’ll continue to work with individuals and organizations throughout the business community to ensure tomorrow’s leaders are equipped with the capabilities to further strengthen diversity, equity and inclusion as a value-add for all!
Sincerely,
Cynthia Turner

Recognizing leaders and advocates
For nearly 20 years, Fisher’s Diversity Awards have honored corporate partners who are elevating and fostering meaningful diversity and inclusion efforts.
These individuals and companies share our college’s passion and determination to drive meaningful change through diversity, equity and inclusion. Our recipients should be proud of the work they and their organizations are doing. We, as a college, are honored to call them allies on our collective journey to a better and more equitable world.”

Creating key partnerships
Fisher’s longstanding partnership with KeyBank is proof of the power that DEI-focused programming can have on today’s students and tomorrow’s business leaders.
For more than a decade, the college has proudly partnered with KeyBank to provide high-achieving, diverse undergraduate students from colleges and universities across the country with a unique opportunity to grow as leaders: the KeyBank MBA Minority Student Case Competition and the KeyBank Business Leadership and Creativity Undergraduate Student Symposium.
Directed and administrated by Fisher’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion Student Services and Corporate and Community Outreach, both events offer undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to interact with and gain valuable learning from KeyBank executives. They also serve as a strong recruiting pipeline for KeyBank, providing access to talented students from Fisher and other prominent business schools across the country.
Advancing economic and business opportunity
As part of Ohio State’s Race, Inclusion and Social Equity (RAISE) initiative, Fisher is expanding its faculty hiring and has launched the Fisher DEI Business Research Initiative, led by Tracy Dumas, associate professor of management and human resources. The Fisher initiative will further connect business education and research with opportunities to address race-based gaps in businesses, among consumers and in career life cycles.

Focusing on inclusion and readiness
Pre-collegiate programs introducing students to futures in business and life at Ohio State
For many students, the path to becoming Business Buckeyes begins long before they receive an acceptance letter, move into a dorm or schedule their first class. Their journeys — and their first impressions of Fisher — are shaped by many of the college’s summer enrichment programs. These pre-collegiate offerings provide young women and men opportunities to explore Fisher and The Ohio State University as a destination for the next step in their academic careers. For many, including the nearly 100 students who participated in three programs in June 2022, it’s also an introduction to the possibilities created by a business education.

The jump from high school to college is challenging for any student. But it can be especially so for those who are the first among their families to pursue a college education.
Fisher FIRST (Focusing on Inclusion and Readiness for a Successful Transition) is an earlyarrival transition program for underserved and first-generation college students admitted to Fisher College of Business. The program provides students with a head start on their college experiences by connecting them with a community of support beginning with their first day on campus and continuing through graduation.
others who shared the same or similar family structures, financial backgrounds and fears. We were able to develop our own small communities, friendships and familiarity with campus before the first day of class. Seeing this built into Fisher FIRST — a business-specific program — provided me with the opportunity to view Fisher through a different lens.”

The PhD Project
Creating tomorrow’s diverse, academic leaders
Anastasia Bailey and Charlie Stevens remember the challenging paths they took in pursuit of careers in academia. Earning a PhD can, at times, be a lonely experience, one fraught with disappointment, setbacks and frustration.
But for Bailey (PhD ’16) and Stevens (PhD ’10), Fisher’s partnership with the PhD Project smoothed out many of those bumps and provided them with critical connections and support as they completed their doctoral degrees.
The PhD Project seeks to increase workplace diversity by increasing the diversity of business school faculty who encourage, mentor, support and enhance the preparation of business leaders. Fisher and The Ohio State University are among hundreds of institutions aligned with the PhD Project and its mission of diversity and inclusion.
“It was an incredibly helpful organization in terms of providing me with the right skillset for success, a peer network of fellow students and a network of faculty members who served as mentors,” said Stevens, an assistant professor of management at Lehigh University. “The academic world is an exciting and stimulating one, but it is also psychologically challenging — it is easy to have doubt, to get frustrated and to lose perspective.”
“In the area of research, where projects take many years to complete and you endure many setbacks and rejections along the way, it can be challenging if you do not have support and people you can turn to for help.”

Charlie Stevens (PhD ʼ10)
From connecting like-minded minority PhD students from across the country, to providing key funding and networking opportunities, the PhD Project has had a tremendous impact on Bailey’s development.
“The PhD Project has been extremely important to me,” said Bailey, an assistant professor of management and global business at Rutgers Business School.

Finding a fit and discovering her passion
Call it a mantra, a philosophy or just the way she’s wired, but Ti’ara Spivey’s secret to her personal success is pretty simple: working hard early and often eventually pays off.
It’s a guiding principle she has long embraced, first as a talented high school student who pursued college opportunities made possible by scholarships, then as a Fisher student with a passion for accounting.
“During my senior year, I was worried about how I was going to pay for school. Financially, I knew our family wasn’t going to be able to afford it,” she said. “So, I applied for every scholarship I could. I made it my goal to graduate from college without any debt.”
She eventually earned several scholarships, including one made possible by the Jerry F. Nichols Accounting Scholarship Endowment Fund at Fisher.
“I can honestly say that I would have had to choose a different school if it weren’t for my scholarships,” she said.
Spivey remembers first arriving on campus for a Visit Fisher Day event with an interest in finance and accounting. Conversations with Assistant Dean and Chief Diversity Officer Cynthia Turner (MA ’95, PhD ’96) piqued Spivey’s interest in accounting.
She jumped headfirst into a multitude of programs that matched her passions. She joined Project THRIVE, a program specifically designed to foster and empower minority and underserved accounting and management information systems students to succeed at Fisher and beyond. She enrolled in the Industry Immersion program, was an Entrepreneurship and Innovation Scholar, a member of the Honors Cohort and served as the internal vice president of the college’s chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants.
64
Although each of the programs shaped her academic experience, her involvement in Project THRIVE helped Spivey define what personal and professional success and impact look like.
“It further opened my eyes to different career paths available in accounting,” she said. “But it was also nice having a community of diverse students to connect with and who are motivated to try and bring more diversity to accounting. It’s difficult seeing companies emphasizing diversity at the entry level but less and less the higher up you go. It can be discouraging, but I hope to be a person that gets to a level in an organization for others to look up to in the future.”
Project THRIVE
Project THRIVE is a unique program that leverages the hallmarks of the business education experience at Fisher to empower underserved students. The program combines rigorous classroom curriculum with experiential learning opportunities to provide tomorrow’s accounting and management information systems leaders with the skills, perspectives and experiences necessary to succeed at Fisher and beyond. Project THRIVE is supported by industry leaders including the Deloitte Foundation, EY Foundation, KPMG Foundation and PwC Foundation.

Time and Change: The Ohio State Campaign
Be
a champion for students.
At Fisher College of Business, investment and impact are inextricably linked. Within every Fisher student, professor and researcher, and among our alumni and friends, lies the potential to dream, to create, to grow and to lead. However, they can’t transform the world alone.
Donors have long championed Buckeyes and their potential, and they are as crucial today as they have been for the past 150 years. Philanthropic support continues to equip Fisher’s students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners with the skills and experiences to serve as principled leaders in a challenging, complex and unseen future.
