younG pHoto StarS in action 8:30 a.m. The stars of the show arrive at the mountain meadow: Lea, Lena and Philip, the junior stars of the local club, and photographer Leo Himsl. Leo raises his eyebrows. Clouds are beginning to appear. But there is till time. 8:40 a.m. While Leo sets up his cameras the photo models also get ready. The kids have plenty to laugh and joke about until all the clothing and cross country boots are as they should be. “They look really cool,” was the unanimous opinion of the trio. 9:00 a.m. The three of them are amazed when they are handed the skis. “Cool – there is a Hole Ski for kids,” notices Lea straight away. Lena gives her friend a puzzled look: “I’ve never seen one like that before.” This is hardly surprising because the ski is a new model since the 10l11 collection. 9:10 a.m. The cameras are ready. Action! The sun is smiling upon them from a deep blue sky. To begin with, each of them skis alone and then together in the group. Hold your head up, keep your tongue inside your mouth and don’t forget to smile. Philip realizes: “There are so many things you have to think about all at the same time.” It’s no surprise that the young legs give way at times and the young models end up kissing the snow. But the fun factor is enormous and the three photo stars smile from ear to ear. 12:00 p.m. Time for a break. The young stars regain their strength with pretzels, cookies and tea. However, they cannot remain seated for very long. “Cool, you can play it like a guitar as well,” says Lena, acting out a catchy rock sang with the Hole Ski. 12:30 p.m. It’s show time again. The last close-ups are taken, then a quick changeover from Skating to Classic skis. It’s good that the Junior Vario poles are so easy to adjust. “Wow, that’s fast,” says a fascinated Lea. 3:00 p.m. That’s it for today. The memory cards are full of smiling faces and a whole load of fun in the snow. One last ski across country to the parking lot and then it’s time for home, supper and a good night’s sleep.

alaskan trip Michael Ferrara Heals and Promotes PTSD Recovery Through Cross Country Skiing Michael Ferrara is a living legend in Aspen. For nearly thirty years he has served as ski patroller, paramedic, sheriff’s deputy, ranger, avalanche specialist and mountain coroner. Known to locals by the nickname Mongo, after the burly villain in Mel Brooks’s Blazing Saddles, Ferrara is a commanding figure who’s performed countless adrenaline-driven mountain stunts and even more rescues in the name of passion for outdoor adventure. The life of an on-call rescuer came at an expense, though. Too often the people he recovered were people he knew; the ones he didn’t know were often young, athletic, outdoor-loving people. All too often he delivered bad news to mothers and fathers. As three decades of constant interaction with trauma and death weighed on him, Ferrara developed many symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as depression. Painful memories played frequently with realism before his eyes, triggering spikes in adrenaline and blood pressure until he hyperventilated. His joy for the outdoors and the sports he loved diminished. Ferrara began self medicating with prescription drugs, and soon he was struggling with addiction, a common path for those suffering from PTSD. After losing his climbing partner and best friend in an avalanche Ferrara finally broke down, unable to see past the painful visions. In 2009 he entered an outpatient rehab program and an intense therapy program. One of the first things they did was place him on an adrenaline-free diet: no skiing, mountaineering or ice climbing. In search of an outlet, Ferrara looked to Nordic skiing. He had dabbled in the sport six years prior for recreation. What he discovered in rehab, though, was that the rhythmic,

Website by attempting to ski across Alaska south to north, from Valdez to Prudhoe Bay (a first for the record books). As he sought sponsors, the story and project captured the media’s attention. Outside magazine wrote a feature and he was interviewed twice on National Public Radio. People and organizations emailed with thanks and requests for help and insight. His efforts were paying off: people were benefitting from the information Ferrara shared about civilian PTSD and the therapy that cross country skiing can provide.

parallel motion of cross country skiing simulates a form of PTSD therapy called EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing). While concentrating on traumatic experiences, the rhythmic motions encourage involvement in both sides of the brain, helping to properly process the trauma. During his recovery Ferrara discovered there were few resources for civilians with PTSD; the disorder was primarily associated with veterans of war. But research showed increasing evidence of PTSD among civilian professionals such as firefighters, police officers and others – including alpine first responders – who are routinely exposed to perilous conditions and horrific scenes. To raise awareness, Ferrara established the First Responder Recovery Project, an online portal where sufferers and resources could connect. Because cross country skiing had become a central part of his recovery, Ferrara decided to promote civilian PTSD and his new

As for selecting gear, Ferrara had traditionally used a three-quarter metal edged ski in backcountry races. But when he saw the Fischer Outtabounds Crown (now named the S-Bound 88) he immediately realized the ski’s wider format, full metal edge and stiffer shovel would be perfect for his expedition. With a Rottefella binding and sturdy Nordic boots this package would rule in the variable conditions of the Alaska bush. Fischer jumped on board in full support, and Ferrara set out with his new skis, backpack and plastic sled for Anchorage. In Alaska Ferrara and his trusted partner Lhotse, a Munich-born mountain rescue dog, started out on the frozen Susitna River and headed north. The duo traveled on rivers and roadsides, beneath power lines, along snowmobile trails and through the wilderness. They faced challenges including deep snow, extremely cold temperatures, rotten snow pack and opening rivers. Yet, according to Ferrara, it was the best expedition of his life: beautiful, cathartic and joyful. The duo didn’t make it to Prudhoe Bay; the snow ran out around Fairbanks. But thanks to re-discovering cross country skiing, Ferrara’s PTSD has lifted and his passion for enjoying the outdoors has returned. And Ferrara’s journey has helped countless others find their way in overcoming PTSD through the beauty of Nordic skiing.

nordic rocker camber The special construction achieves a smooth effect in the shovel with slightly open ski tips. As a result the ski can be turned more easily, more quickly and with less effort. In addition it gives you perfect gliding properties in soft conditions in unprepared terrain. The construction is characterized by two numbers. In the case of the 5/10 Nordic Rocker construction, for example, the 5 refers to the height difference in millimeters of the ski tip with/without pressure on it. The 10 indicates how many centimeters the contact point of the ski moves back when pressure is placed on it compared to when there is no pressure on it. eXample: 5/10 nordic rocker 5 mm

There are endless options for where you can cruise. One of the best places to start is at your local Nordic center. Here you will find prepared trails, professional ski instruction and, oftentimes, rental equipment. Many centers provide hearty food service as well. To locate a Nordic center near you visit www.xcski.org. Many state and national parks and forests also provide groomed trails. Your local cross-country dealer will be able to point you in the right direction. There is a wide range of Nordic Cruising skis to choose from, so if you want to ski out the back door or at your favorite Nordic center you will find the ski that is just right for you. The user friendly sizing system (S, M, L, XL) for men and (S, M, L) for women makes it easy to select the right ski for your body weight and use. The skis come in shorter lengths so they are easy to control, and easy to stand on due to the slightly wider center section of the ski. The most popular models are the Jupiter Control for men and the My Style Desire for women. Both of these skis can be used in a groomed trail but are wide and stable enough to be used on a snowmobile path or when making your own trail. If you are more inclined to ski on groomed surfaces you may prefer the Orbiter or the My Style Mystic. Go out and enjoy the winter! Find out why more and more people are experiencing the joys of gliding over the snow at a comfortable pace on cross country skis.
