“… Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood.” ~ Hebrews 13:12 (NIV) ~ It’s been four months now, and today is the day once again. Once again for what you may ask. Once again to do one of my “Pastor Terrell’s Big Fives” — to donate blood. OK, donating blood is my code for serving others in our church family and in our communities — so serving others may look somewhat different for you. My last donation was in November — when I made a Power Red Cell donation. I had to wait four months instead of the normal two months to donate again. So, today is the day. Donating blood is not new to me since the pandemic. I began donating blood when I was in college, and I have continued since then — including many times at the San Diego Chargers annual blood drive where they always gave away a cool Chargers tee-shirt. I have given whole blood, platelets and red blood cells. The Blood Banks, wherever God has placed Barbara and I, seem to really like my blood — almost as much as I do!
Besides the Blood Banks, there is one special lady who really came to appreciate my blood — perhaps more than any other person I have known. A dear senior member of our church in Santee, California — Neva was in need of surgery. However, she was leery of the procedure since the doctor informed her she would need a blood transfusion. She was afraid of not knowing the source of the donation. So, I volunteered to make a direct donation for her through the Red Cross. After the successful operation, Barbara visited Neva in the hospital as she was recovering. She told Barbara she had never felt better in her life because she now had “holy” blood in her system — her pastor had given her his blood. As a pastor — you just have to love those senior ladies in the church! Of course, my blood did nothing to improve her holiness. I could only hope my heart was as pure as hers. She may well have felt stronger and even experienced the urge to go outside and jog a bit — but with a bag of my blood in her — that would go without saying. continued
