“Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world’s standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise.

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.” And again, “The LORD knows the thoughts of the wise; he knows they are worthless.”

So don’t boast about following a particular human leader. For everything belongs to you whether Paul or Apollos or Peter, or the world, or life and death, or the present and the future. Everything belongs to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.”

~ 1 Corinthians 3:18–23 (NLT) ~

THE GREAT SIN

Here’s a quote from Barclay’s commentary on 1 Corinthians 3:18-23 that won ’t make it into the sermon this Sunday. It was written in the 1950’s but sounds like it was written for today. “The trouble about this intellectual pride is that it is always two things.

a.) It is always disputatious. It cannot keep silent and admire; it must talk and criticize. It cannot bear to have its opinions contradicted; it must prove that it and it alone is right. It is never humble enough to learn; it must always be laying down the law.

b.) Intellectual pride is characteristically exclusive. Its tendency is to look down on others rather than to sit down beside them. Its outlook is that all who do not agree with it are wrong.”

Long ago Cromwell wrote to the Scots, “I beseech you [in the name of Christ], think it possible that you may be mistaken.” That is precisely what intellectual pride cannot think. It tends to cut men off from each other rather than to unite them.” William Barclay

Here are a few more quotations about pride that are worthy of contemplating.

• “If you feel you are indispensable, put your finger in a glass of water, withdraw it, and note the hole you have left.” Unknown

• “Let me give you the history of pride in three small chapters. The beginning of pride was in heaven. The continuance of pride is on earth. The end of pride is in hell. This history shows how inconvenient it is.” R. Newton

• “Aproud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you’re looking down, you can't see something that's above you.” C.S. Lewis

• “Temper gets you into trouble. Pride keeps you there.” Unknown

• “The intelligent man who is proud of his intelligence is like the condemned man who is proud of his large cell.” Simon Weil

• “Pride is concerned with who is right. Humility is concerned with what is right.” Ezra Taft Benson

Better than the trap of pride is the road of humility. Notice what the once pridefulApostle Peter said:

“So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.” ~ 1 Peter 5:6 (NLT) ~

Blessings on your week. Take some time before God allowing Him to reveal areas of pride in your life that you may be unaware of.And then repent. I do hope to see you in worship this coming Sunday. This week as we prepare to talk about our reading in our discussion groups, we will begin with my sermon from the Book of Obadiah: ACrash Course on Pride.
