“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself..”

~ Matthew 22:37-39 (ESV) ~

WORD STUDY: ABIDE / MENO

Definition: Menō (μένω) is a verb meaning to remain, to stay, to dwell, or to abide. In common Greek usage, it could describe staying in one place, continuing in a condition, or persisting over time. In the New Testament, especially in John’s writings, menō takes on a deeply spiritual sense: to remain in relationship, to dwell continually, and to persist in faith and obedience.

Biblical Usage: Menō appears over 100 times in the New Testament. It often speaks of abiding in Christ, His word, and His love.

“Abide (menō) in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides (menō) in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.”

~ John 15:4 (ESV) ~

“If you abide (menō) in my word, you are truly my disciples.”

~ John 8:31 (ESV) ~

“So now faith, hope, and love abide (menō), these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

~ 1 Corinthians 13:13 (ESV) ~

“Let what you heard from the beginning abide (menō) in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father.”

~ 1 John 2:24 (ESV) ~

To menō is more than staying put. It is rooting yourself in Christ with ongoing trust and loyalty. Jesus’call to abide involves a daily choice to stay connected to Him as the source of life and fruitfulness.Abiding means His words shape us, His love sustains us, and His Spirit empowers us. Just as a branch cannot live apart from the vine, so the believer cannot thrive without abiding in Christ.

Blessings on your week. This may be a great time to evaluate where you are rooted in your life. If you find it is not in Jesus Christ, would you choose to change that today? I do hope to see you in worship this coming Sunday. This week as we prepare to talk about our reading in our discussion groups, we will begin with my sermon from the Book of Ezekiel: ACrash Course on the Most Important Person in Town.

P.S.

Next Sunday, September 21st is National Back to Church Sunday. My prayer is that every member, regular attender or friend of First Southern will make a commitment to be here for Worship on that day. My prayer is also that each one of us will make a commitment to invite at least two people join us next Sunday as well. Since only about 10% of our population in Prescott Valley and the Quad City area attend church on any given Sunday we have plenty of friends and neighbors to invite.
