“Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”
~ Mark 10:27(NIV) ~
GOING OUT ON THE WRONG LIMB
For all of you NASAfans orApollo 13 fans or Tom Hanks fans, you may have missed the sad truth thatApollo 13 Commander Jim Lovell passed away one week ago as I am writing this, onAugust 7th. He was 97 years old at the time of his death.
Not only was he the commander of that amazing space flight he was also on the crews of Apollo 8, Gemini 7 and 12. He read from Genesis 1 on Christmas Eve, 1968 while orbiting the moon. He was an untiring spokesperson for our space program. He was definitely a man who believed in doing things that may seem impossible to most others.
I saw the following quotes the other day, with the reminder that there are no constraints. It’s about space travel.
“There is no hope for the fanciful idea of reaching the Moon because of insurmountable barriers to escaping the Earth’s gravity.”
Dr. Forest Ray Moulton, University of Chicago, 1932
“All this writing about space travel is utter bilge.”
Sir Richard Wooley, Astronomer Royal of Britain, 1956

“To place a man in a multi-stage rocket and project him into the controlling gravitational field of the moon ... I am bold enough to say that such a man-made voyage will never occur regardless of future advances.”
Dr. Lee de Forest, 1957
Of the above quotes, Dr. de Forest’s is my favorite. He was bold enough to go out on a limb, then the limb broke. That happens when you’re more sure of what can’t be done than what can be done.
If anything has ever been done, you can be sure that before it was done, there were experts saying that it couldn’t be done. Yet, humankind has accomplished some amazing things in terms of technology and medicine and progress. This should underline a most significant truth:
Though we are fallen, though we are broken, though we have limits the human race is sometimes capable of achieving the seemingly impossible. How much more, then, should we trust God who knows no limits or constraints indeed to accomplish that which seems impossible?
I’m guessing that you’re looking at one or two impossible situations right now a financial hurdle a relationship under stress a concern about health. It’s easy to go out on a limb and say, “This problem can never be solved.” Be careful, though. That limb can break. Because, even though with man some things truly are impossible
“… All things are possible with God.” ~ Mark 10:27 (NIV) ~
If man can put a man on the moon, how much more can God accomplish in your life? Let’s remember today under whose power and authority we serve.
Blessings on your week. Let me challenge you to pay attention to what “impossible” thing God may be calling you to do or what “impossible” journey He may be calling you to take. I do hope to see you all in worship this coming Sunday. We are in the third week of IMMERSE where we will be for the remainder ofAugust and September. This section is on PROPHETS.As we prepare to read and discuss the second half of the Book of Isaiah in our discussion groups this coming week, we will begin with my sermon: ACrash Course on a Clean Break.
