“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD GOD is the eternal Rock”. ~ Isaiah 26:3-4 (NLT) ~

THE

EAGLE AND THE HIPPO?

I believe that every Christian I know (including yours truly) really hopes that our lives would resound with the prayer of Isaiah above. To have perfect peace in our hearts and minds every day. To trust every thought and every action to God. To know that our feet are constantly anchored on Jesus Christ our Eternal Rock. That we would never make a sinful choice a bad decision or do anything to hurt someone we love.

Sounds good, right? However, in real life we still mess up. In fact, we usually mess up a lot!

What’s the problem?

Author and poet Carl Sandburg addressed this very problem when he wrote: “There is an eagle in me that wants to soar, and there is a hippopotamus in me that wants to wallow in the mud.” ~ Carl Sandburg ~

He may not have known it, but Sandburg was describing the Christian life. It’s our dual nature, as theApostle Paul talked about...

“I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.” ~ Romans 7:22-23 (NLT) ~

Every day you must choose:

Will I live according to the new nature, or the old? Will I soar with the eagles, or wallow in the mud?

Your decision determines everything. How you greet the day. How you direct your thoughts. How you talk to or talk about your co-workers, neighbors, friends and relatives. How you spend your spare change and how you spend your spare time. And on and on.

Every day every moment of every day you have the power to choose your environment the clear blue sky or the local hippo hangout.

You have a key to both places, and access is unrestricted. It just depends on where you prefer to be.

Remember today that God is calling you upward.

Blessings on your week. This Sunday I will address Isaiah 26:3 to discover one very important tool God gives us to help keep our thoughts fixed on Jesus. Meanwhile, just choose one area of struggle in your life and simply turn it over to God every morning. I do hope to see you all in worship this coming Sunday. We are in the second week of IMMERSE where we will be for the remainder ofAugust and September. This section is on the PROPHETS.As we prepare to read and discuss the first half of the Book of Isaiah in our discussion groups this coming week, we will begin with my sermon: ACrash Course on Transformational Meditation.
