“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” ~ Isaiah 43:1 (NIV) ~
Fears they come in all shapes and sizes. They seem to be everywhere. They’re a lot like MasterCard it’s hard to leave home without them. The fact is, it’s hard to live at home with them as well. If you’re like me, you understand that fears seem to be very comfortable with us wherever we are.
For example, when I hear “BUG!!!” at home I know it’s time to grab the nearest kleenex and head for the source of sound. Often when I arrive, I’m not too sure I don’t just want to let the monster bug alone to go about his business!
Some fears are reasonable. I never have come to grips with the idea of jumping out of perfectly good airplane just to have the thrill of parachuting back to earth. I figure the plane will come down sometime I’m content to wait!
On the other hand, some fears seem unreasonable. Some people choose not to go underwater in a submarine. They join the Navy and do just fine aboard a surface ship, but never desire to be a submariner. After a 20 year career in the Navy I find that hard to believe. I can ride that submarine at Disneyland all day long with no fear whatsoever!
Some fears are funny and some are very serious. I once did a whole sermon series on different phobias I finally concluded it when most of the church were afraid to come back on Sundays to hear another sermon on things that make us afraid.
Yet God reminds us that we should “fear not.” That can seem unreasonable when we consider some of our greatest fears. Many Christians I know never share their faith with anyone out of fear.A while back at a Billy Graham evangelism training conference, 51% of those attending stated that the number one reason they never witness to anyone is fear. The fear of being considered a fanatic of being different from everyone else of losing friends of being rejected.
So what are we to do about that particular fear? We are told that we are to witness to tell others about Jesus and His saving grace to share our faith in Him. Yet for most Christians it seems to be an almost impossible task. What about sharing with our own family members and close friends? We really want them to become Christians yet sharing Christ with them can seem the most frightening and difficult task of all.
Let me share two insights that may be of help when sharing the Good News with those we care deeply about.
First, when facing any fear, even the fear of witnessing to your family and friends, simply talk to God about it. Tell Him about your fear. He won’t be mad. He won’t scold you. He cares and He can do something about your fear. Look at the words of King David:
“I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.”
~ Psalm 34:4 (NIV) ~
God is able to deliver you from your fears even the fear of sharing your faith. So get serious about talking with Him!
Secondly, remember your source of power when it comes to witnessing. That power is not you. It’s not about your personality we are all weak at that point. Your power is in the Holy Spirit the very Spirit of Christ who lives in you. The Holy Spirit is the dynamic power you have to share your faith even when everything else about you shouts: “BeAfraid!” “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses… ”
~ Acts 1:8 (NIV) ~
God Bless you this week as you face some of your fears in the Power of God!
