with Pastor Terrell “… Do not fear, Zion; do not let your hands hang limp. The Lord your God is with you. The Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but rejoice over you with singing.” ~ Zephaniah 3:16-17 ~
Saturday, March 4, 1933, with the nation in the grip of the Great Depression, the new president’s inaugural speech was awaited with great anticipation. Broadcast nationwide on several radio networks, the speech was heard by tens of millions of Americans, and set the stage for Roosevelt’s urgent efforts to respond to the crisis of the day. His speech is best remembered for one of his first lines in which he stated:

“So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is... fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.” I’m not so much concerned for the reasons behind FDR’s inaugural speech that year. History tells us much on the subject. However, I do notice that even then, the “paralysis of fear” was very much a reality in everyday life. It was grinding our nation to a halt. If fear can paralyze a nation, what do you think it does to your life? Think of all of the opportunities for engaging the world around you that are missed. All of the relationships that are derailed or maybe never developed. Jobs and ministries that are dropped or never even attempted. Time alone with the Savior for fear of disappointment or guilt. Countless opportunities for engaging with God, with our world, with our families, with our own selves — all lost due to fear. We cower in fear like Zion — with our hands limp at our sides — and we don’t have to. God has a better plan for us.
