About Us Mid-Atlantic Robotics is a New Jersey Non-Profit Corporation with a IRS 501(c)(3) exemption as a charitable organization. Mid-Atlantic Robotics does business under the name FIRST Mid-Atlantic. We have three employees and hundreds of volunteers from industry and the community. FIRST Mid-Atlantic serves students in Delaware, New Jersey, and Eastern Pennsylvania.

The Corporation's purposes are as set forth in its Articles of Incorporation. The general purpose shall be to promote interest in STEM subjects, i.e. science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, through participation in programs such as the programs of FIRSTÂŽ (www.firstinspires.org) and related activities. The Corporation does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation, either in its membership or governance policies and practices or in the recipients of its action.

FIRST Mid-Atlantic Chairman's Greeting On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to this FIRST Mid-Atlantic event! Since its founding in 2010, FIRST Mid-Atlantic has existed to support area high-school-level robotics teams and now operates nine FIRST Robotics Competition events in the New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware region. The overarching goal of these events is to provide opportunities for students to engage with technology, and inspire them to be science and technology leaders and innovators. The program is about so much more than just robots!

To our hundreds of tireless volunteers and many gracious donors, I must also say, Thank You! Your generosity in giving, whether of your time, talents, or financial resources, is a foundational support not only to FIRST Mid-Atlantic, but also to each of the students competing at this event. For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology FIRST is about inspiring young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

It is about changing the culture. It is about creating and growing a culture that supports a student’s development into becoming a productive member of society.

Changing the culture, changing the public perception of the value of engineering and STEM learning is part of the job. Starting and growing FIRST though new team startup, training, educational and business partnerships are integral to the development of a FIRST team.

Accomplishing this is no small task. It requires business planning and execution. It requires building a network of educational and business partnerships.

It requires excellence in communications. Explaining the value of FIRST requires developing personal skills, soft skills, and the ability to communicate across a range of environments.

Communicating the value of engineering in the design world is critical to advancing the public understanding of the need for technological literacy.

Working to grow FIRST, and helping other teams succeed requires hard work and a commitment to ethics. Teams are expected to compete fiercely, yet graciously and professionally, without negative behaviors.

Teams can help one another by leading and developing symposiums, workshops, and conferences. They can assist one another as a group and one on one through mentoring.

The teams, individuals, and mentors that exhibit excellence and outstanding leadership are recognized by the Chairman’s, Dean’s List, and Woodie Flowers Awards.

FIRST is more than robots. The robots are a vehicle for students to learn important life skills.

The 2020 FIRST Robotics Competition Game

In INFINITE RECHARGE, two alliances work to protect FIRST City from approaching asteroids caused by a distant space skirmish. Each alliance, along with their trusty droids, race to collect and score Power Cells in order to energize their Shield Generator for maximum protection. To activate sections of the Shield Generator, droids manipulate their Control Panels after scoring a specific number of Power Cells. Near the end of the match, droids race to their Rendezvous Point to get their Shield Generator operational in order to protect the city.

During the 15 second Autonomous Period, droids follow pre-programmed instructions. Alliances score points by: 1. Scoring Power Cells

in the Power Port

2. Moving from the Initiation Line

In the final 2 minutes and 15 seconds of the match, drivers take control of the droids. Alliances score points by: 1. Continuing to score Power Cells in the Power Port

2. Completing Rotation Control

3. Completing Position Control

4. Hanging from the Generator Switch

5. Getting the Generator Switch to the level position

The Alliance with the highest score at the end of the match wins.

Students have 45 days from learning what the engineering challenge is

to deliver a finished robot.

ROBOT COMPETITION

During this period the team goes through a creative design and build process. Teams produce a robot that weighs up to 120 lbs; 150 lbs with battery and bumpers.

There is no kit of parts in the traditional sense; no real instruction manual.

At the competitions, teams play against each other in alliances. In one match 3 teams will work together. The next time those teams play they might be playing against those alliance partners they had played previously together.

Each competition produces three finalists, multiple awards and recognizes the top performing rookie robot team.

ROBOT TECHNICAL & ARTISTIC DESIGN The students in the FIRST Robotics Competition receive at no cost professional versions of software for CAD (Computer Aided Design), Software Development, Data Analytics, Configuration Management, and Vision Processing.

Students can choose to use these free professional tools to design their robot if they so desire.

Judges evaluate the teams’ engineering design process and the teams’ implementation of the robot.

The judges give consideration to the machine design, creativity, control systems, quality, and artistry.

STEM Mentoring When a young person, even a gifted one, grows up without proximate living examples of what they may aspire to become – whether lawyer, scientist, artist, or leader in any realm – their goal remains abstract. Such models as appear in books or on the news, however inspiring or revered, are ultimately too remote to be real, let alone influential. But a role model in the flesh provides more than inspiration; their very existence is confirmation of possibilities one may have every reason to doubt, saying, “Yes, someone like me can do this.” [US2020] 10

In Memoriam In October 2019, Dr. Woodie Flowers, an innovator in design and engineering education and an incredible advisor to FIRST and supporter of our mission (see right), passed away. As thousands of heartfelt tributes to Woodie have poured in from around the world, it is clear his legacy will live on indefinitely through the gracious nature of our community and our ongoing commitment to empowering educators and building global citizens.

The FIRST spirit encourages doing high-quality, well-informed work in a manner that leaves everyone feeling valued. Gracious Professionalism seems to be a good descriptor for part of the ethos of FIRST. It is part of what makes FIRST different and wonderful.
