The Domino Effect September Greetings, We are kicking off September with our 99th Anniversary on Sunday September 23, 2018. This will mark the beginning of our year-long Centennial celebration and ending with our 100th Anniversary on September 9, 2019. There will be many ways in which we celebrate ministry and service, while also engaging our community to say, “Thank You!” This Centennial year is a very exciting time in our history as we highlight some milestones and faithful people of our past, celebrate our ministry and faithful people of today, and plan new ministry opportunities with the next generation. God has called each of us to be part of something bigger than we could ever be by ourselves—First Lutheran Church.

Part of our growing excitement is the domino effect of good things happening in our midst. One such domino is our recent collaboration with School District 241 to house the 4-year old preschool classroom, known as Voluntary Preschool or VPK. We now have 40 children attending school at First Lutheran Church; 20 in the morning and 20 in the afternoon in what was formerly our youth room.

What an exciting opportunity to welcome these students and their families, and to let the community know we care about children and the child care shortage in Albert Lea. The Voluntary Preschool prompted another two dominos, our High School students and some Sunday school classes are moving upstairs to the second floor. This newly updated space will have a fresh and appealing décor to attract more students. It’s important to have a space where youth, especially teens can be themselves. A place where they want to be because it’s light, airy, inviting, and conducive to ministry. The more youth and teens we attract, the more we spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. These new spaces will allow us to serve ministry needs now and in the future.

There’s so many more good things happening here. We will have another Congregational Update Meeting on Sunday September 30, 2018 at 11:45am in the Main Sanctuary. Between now and then we invite you to visit these renovated spaces and see the amount of work we’ve put in to these projects. It truly is an exciting time.

♫ ♫ ♫ MUSICAL REFLECTIONS ♫ ♫ ♫ I know! I know! I sound like a broken record with Choir Recruitment. BUT--WE NEED CHOIR MEMBERS FOR ALL FOUR PARTS--SOPRANO--ALTO-TENOR--BASS!!! We can't do it without you..... It definitely takes a village for a choir to have a full, vibrant sound of four-part harmony. We have several FAITHFUL choir folks who have been sick and battling other illnesses. We need choir reinforcements from our church at large to join those FAITHFUL in leading worship and telling the stories of God through music!!! You have heard me say it before, but, one of my favorite Scriptures is Exodus 15:1. Once Moses and the Israelites were safely on the 'other side' of the Red Sea, what did they do??? They sang! They rejoiced in song as they praised God for safe delivery to the 'other side'--"The Moses and the Israelits sang this song to the Lord: 'I will sing to the Lord for he is highly exalted.' It is time to collect school supplies for the Lutheran World Relief Van and for our local community! Check local stores for additional school supplies for Albert Lea schools. We will have containers set up in the gathering space to collect the supplies.

Below is a list of what we need for the LWR van:  70 - sheet notebooks – wide or college ruled paper, 8 x 10, no loose leaf paper  30 - centimeter ruler or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other side  Pencil sharpeners  Blunt scissors – safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well  Unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers  Black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink)  Boxes of crayons – 16 or 24 count  2 ½ inch erasers “Especially needed: scissors, pens, pencil sharpeners and notebooks!”.

Just bring them in a bag and we will assemble them into backpacks.

New Weekly Study for Men Wednesday mornings 6:30–7:30 am, beginning Sept. 5 At Snap Fitness, Downtown Albert Lea Our plan is to read together the book:

How to Ruin Your Life [and Starting Over When You Do] Book Description: You can blow up your life.

To bring strong and tall buildings to the ground, demolition experts strategically place tiny explosives throughout the structure of a building so that the building will topple on itself. Instead of destroying the building from the outside, they destroy it from within. In the same way many great men and women have imploded, and others are well on their way.

Author Eric Geiger offers a sobering reminder that many great and godly people have imploded, and none of us are above the risk. Looking at the story of David’s infamous implosion, readers will learn how to ruin our lives (so we won't), and also how to find hope if we do--as all of us need His grace.

We’ll use this book and also the Bible as we discuss life together. Some books are available, but easy to get more.

Any and all men are welcome. No food or coffee provided, but you may bring your own.  5 when you’re able.

Food for Backpacks And He answered them, “whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food

is to do likewise.” Luke 3:11 What is food for backpacks?

This initiative was started last year by Grace Lutheran Church.

They heard that there were children needing food at the neighborhood elementary school on the weekends. The kids were coming to school on Mondays hungry. So with approval from district 241, Grace was able to sponsor a weekend Food for Backpacks program.

Due to the overwhelming response, Grace Lutheran reached out to FLC and other local churches for a partnership to help all Albert Lea elementary schools and Southwest Middle School. The meal packets include 2 breakfasts, 2 snacks and 2 dinners. The packets are delivered and confidentially given to the needy students on Fridays. The meals are nutritious with minimal preparation time.

Halvorson Elementary School is the school our congregation has been asked to help.

We will be sharing this school with Hayward Lutheran church. The meal packets will be stored at FLC. In collaboration with the school social worker we are currently going to be helping 105 students with weekend meals. This number is also subject to change.

Costs:

The cost for the each food packet is $3.35 per student per week. The plan is to cover the entire school calendar year.

How can I help: We have applied for some grants, but have not received any yet. We are asking local businesses and service groups for financial support as well.

We are also in need of people to deliver the meals to Halverson each week.

If you are able to donate to this effort or have any questions, please contact Jenny Edwin at the church 373-6424.

What a blessing it is to have the opportunity to help address hunger right here in our own community.

FLC YOUTH ANNOUNCEMENTS The Garden Project We now have harvested sweet corn, zucchinis, cucumber, and green beans!

We have donated sweet corn and zucchini (115 pounds) to Salvation Army.

Youth Room Update

ATTENTION: Parents of College Students We would love to send your college student a care package from our congregation this fall (sometime before Finals). We want to let them know we are thinking about and praying for them during their time of studies.

Please email Jordan (jordan@flcal.org) your student’s address so we can get them on our list and send them a package.

We are in the process of remodeling the youth room on the second floor.

We have taken 2 walls down to make a larger room. Painting has started. Air conditioning and some electrical work should be done by early Sept. Check in the gathering space for more updates. We have a informational poster displayed.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT FLC? A very special thank you to the library board who works hard keeping the library looking nice, sitting in the library the first Sunday of the month, This month’s Library Corner is a thank you taking turns writing in the Messenger, cataloging letter to the many that make the running of our books, checking in books, shelving them and combeautiful, restful First Lutheran Library possible ing up with ideas to promote the library. Rally Day is Sunday, September 9, 2018 9:15-11:00 am Rally Sunday is the first Sunday back to celebrate Sunday school programs. Pre-K report directly to their classrooms and 1st thru 6th graders meet in the Sanctuary. Students will be dismissed from their classrooms for Rally Day festivities in Bethany Hall. There will be treats, games and prizes.

Thank you to all who turned in their pledge cards! The pledged support, which is our

envelope offering, contributes greatly to the programs, education, support, and basic upkeep of the church and congregation. The total church budget for the year totals $909,500. Of that total; $670,900, is budgeted to come from envelope offering. This is comparable with previous years and also reflects the goals of the church. The total amount pledged during our drive was $221,201. This was based off of 111 responses. The Spirit of Giving team, is hoping that we keep in mind Moses’ reminders to the Israelites in Exodus 35: 21 & 29, “And they came, everyone whose heart was stirred, and everyone whose spirit was willing, and brought the Lord’s offering to be used for the tent of meeting, and for all its service, and for the sacred vestments. All the Israelite men and women whose hearts made them willing to bring anything for the work that the Lord had commanded by Moses to be done, brought it as a freewill offering to the Lord.”. Thank you for your generous pledges! Please continue to give generously with thankful hearts so First Lutheran Church can continue to meet its budget, and thus spread the love of Christ.

We are using the Albert Lea Taxi Service.

Those who need a ride to church can call 383-3341 to schedule a ride to the service of their choice on Sundays, or Thursday evenings.

Just let the driver know to bill FLC.

We try to be available in emergencies.

Do not hesitate to call the church (373-6424), if you have not seen a pastor and would like to request a visit. If you call the church office after hours and get the recording, keying option ❸ will send your call directly to the pastor on call. No name is automatically put on a printed prayer list. We ask permission before we include a name on our printed prayer list.

Personal Visitation by the Pastors To support people at the time of illness or injury, pastors do make personal visits in hospitals, homes or Care Centers. Many hospitals, like the Mayo’s Methodist & St. Mary’s Hospitals in Rochester no longer give pastors access to lists of patients. So, if we happen to be there visiting someone, and we don’t know about someone else hospitalized, we have no way of discovering that person any more. Hospitals do NOT call pastors/churches to inform them of admissions, and have not for decades. So, please, call, if you want us to know.
