Welcome to our new Music Coordinator!

My name is Tyler Egge, and I am the new music coordinator here at First Lutheran Church. It was here in this place that my love of music was first kindled, so I am delighted to be back in the congregation that raised me.

After I graduated from Albert Lea High School, I attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, where I received my music degree, with minors in church music and religion. At Concordia, I was involved in campus ministry and a variety of music activities, including the Concordia Band and the Concordia Orchestra. I also studied bassoon, French horn, and organ.

Over the last few years, I have worked in congregational settings doing both music ministry and children’s ministry, and I spent four years serving on the summer staff of Shetek Lutheran Ministries in Slayton, MN. Even though I have only been back for a short time, it feels like this really is a season of new life for First Lutheran, and I can’t wait to share in and help lead the worshiping and musical life of this community. One thing I am excited about in particular is Fusion on Wednesday afternoons—I can’t wait to sing, play music, and have fun with them!

First Lutheran has a long legacy of exceptional music. In continuing that we welcome the new music team. The FLC council is happy to introduce our leaders. Tyler Egge started as our Music Coordinator on September 20.

Bekah Sousa will continue to be our organist at the 8 a.m. service.

Jennifer Ordalen Paulson has come on board as our song leader and Lilah Aas will be leading the bell choir. We welcome these talented people to First Lutherans staff.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

A few words from Pastor Roger Greetings siblings in Christ!

When I was a kid, there was a video game that I used to like to play. It was called Sonic the Hedgehog. It was about a blue, cartoon hedgehog that could run fast and was trying to defeat an evil, mad scientist. When I was 10 years old, I could play that game for hours. One of the good things about the game is that at the beginning, I got to start with three lives. That means I would get at least three chances to win before it would be game over. After I learned how to do everything right, I could win the entire game.

How great would it be if we got three lives, like in that game? Imagine if when life gets stressful, we could hit a pause button and restart. Then, we would know the obstacles and the dangers ahead before we get there. If we don’t like the outcome, we could start over and pick a different path.

Of course, that’s not how real life works.

When we make mistakes, we live with them and work to rectify them. When we encounter obstacles and challenges, we must learn how to go through them. Life can be complicated and there is no restart button. In real life, it is possible to do everything right and to still not win.

On the days when life feels heavy or difficult, we can find ourselves asking: How does faith in Jesus fit into this? We discover ourselves back at the foot of the cross. It reminds us on that darkest of days, when all goodness seemed lost, God reached into the story of the world and became our source of true and lasting hope through the death and resurrection of Jesus. When we feel like we have lost the story of our lives, Jesus retells us the story of who we are and how we became children on God. Consider these words from John’s gospel: 12 He gave the right and the power to become children of God to those who received Him. He gave this to those who put their trust in His name. 13 These children of God were not born of blood and of flesh and of man’s desires, but they were born of God. John 1:12-13 Take heart. Our redeemer, Jesus Christ, testifies to who you are—even when you, yourself, do not have the strength to do so.

Operation Christmas Child School is starting…Fall is just around the corner and the holidays follow close behind.

We, as a church, are again participating in Operation Christmas Child. This is just a reminder to start collecting items for your shoeboxes. Some suggestions are pencils, markers, crayons, tablets, coloring books. Date for collection of boxes is November 15-22, 2021. Make a child happy…..share the love of Christ!

Home communion is another important and rewarding mission in our church. Our home communion ministers will bring the Lords Supper to anyone who is home bound or unable to attend church. Please contact the church office, if you desire home communion or if you know of anyone who does. Also, if any of you would like to assist with home communion or have any questions, please contact the church office.

Volunteers Needed First Lutheran is having a Live Nativity again this year that will be held on Wednesday December 15th from6:30-8:30 and Friday December 17th from 6:30-8:30.

We are looking for people willing to help plan this event (5), people willing to be in the nativity Friday night (10) along with setup and tear down volunteers (3-5).

First Lutheran Church’s Annual meeting will be held on November 14th 2021 at 9:15am in the Sanctuary with the sole purpose of the Ratification of the 2021 Constitution.

When a baby is born, they will be gifted with a custom onesie.

Women’s Ministry First Lutheran Church The First Lutheran Church Women is changing its structure and programming to better meet the educational and spiritual needs of women. Holidays Ahead, Salad Luncheon, Women’s Tea, Reformation Luncheon are some of the programs sponsored by the women. In addition, we support circles; monthly meetings with planned programs; serving at funerals; support of local and global missions; and special projects. Funds raised from FLCW events and activities support missions and needs of the congregation through special projects.
