Rejoice in the Lord!

Dear Friends in Christ, Recently my wife Joan and I purchased a new bird feeder for our deck. It is a ‘squirrel-proof’ bird feeder! Our previous bird feeder was not squirrelproof, and sometimes the squirrels would have it emptied within a day with the birds getting very little. Plus, the old one was plastic, and the squirrels chewed on it, ruining it. Oh, those pesky thieving squirrels!

Our new bird feeder is metal. It’s design includes a spring loaded feature that closes off access to the birdseed when the squirrel puts its weight on it. The squirrel departs disappointed! He cannot steal the birdseed anymore.

Thinking about this made me stop and ponder how sometimes the chief thief, a.k.a., the devil, steals from us the joy, peace and power for abundant living that God would have for us. God cares about our hearts and attitudes and desires His best for us.

That’s why He sent us Jesus!

So, just like the squirrels are a ‘given’; they’re out there and want to steal our birdseed... so is the ‘chief thief’ who wants to rob us. As we needed to set up a way to foil the schemes of the squirrels, what can we ask God to set up in our hearts to thwart the schemes of the devil? Here are some suggestions: 1. Gratitude. Focusing on all for which we can be thankful is life-enhancing. Expressing that gratitude to those around us and to God in corporate worship is essential.

[Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever. ~Psalm 107:1 & many other places in the Bible ] 2. Grace & Forgiveness. Approaching even difficult life situations with an attitude that seeks to forgive and reconcile, rather than to blame, releases a new freedom into life. Remember, God first forgave us in Jesus! [But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. ~Romans 5:8]

MUSICAL NOTES

3. Generosity. Always being eager to give to

others of our time, attention, willingness to listen, assistance, and financial help releases us to live out of a sense of abundance, rather than scarcity. Our God is a generous God, and He is able to provide for all to which He calls us. [And God will generously provide all you need.

Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. ~II Corinthians 9:8 (NLT)]

In the Gospel writing about Jesus our Good Shepherd comes this verse from Him: The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. (John 10:10 (NLT)) That’s what God wants to do for us, and set up in our hearts and attitudes to experience together as His family, the church. Thanks be to God!

He has ‘hit the ground running’ with effective leadership and ministry, and he is just so pleasant and encouraging to be around. Plus, he’s fun! I feel so blessed to be able to work with our great staff, leaders and members of First Lutheran Church. What a beautiful time of year! The warmth of the holidays draws us closer together as families and as a people-the family of God. As we approach Thanksgiving, it gets pretty busy in our lives. It gets pretty busy here at the church. We have many events, programs, services, concerts, and more. It is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of it all. Psalm 46:10 says "Be still and know that I am God". At this busy, busy time of year, I pray that we will all BE STILL--BE QUIET--DROP TO OUR KNEES-GIVE THANKS. May we give thanks to our Creator, our Shepherd, our Savior, Our King.

I am thankful for all of you, the loving congregation of First Lutheran Church, who so genuinely support our church's music and worship ministry. I am thankful for all the singers and musicians who share their gifts and talents week after week in preparation and praise to you.

I am thankful for the children, parents, grandparents, and others who support the RAYS OF LIGHT AND SOUNDS OF JOY CHILDREN'S CHOIRS. I am thankful to God--He gives us the "calling" and the "call to service". Praise you, Lord, for the privilege to serve you. Thank you for all your mighty blessings EVERY DAY!!! Alleluia!!!

The Rays of Light Children's Choir-Wednesdays at 3:30 PM (until 4:15 PM)-Grades 1-4.

The Sounds of Joy Children's Choir - Wednesdays at 4:15 PM (until 5:15 PM)-Grades 5-9.

The First Lutheran Church Hand Bell Choir-Wednesdays at 5:30 PM (until 6:25 PM).

The First Lutheran Church Choir meets on Wednesdays at 6:30 PM (until 8 PM). We need singers for ALL parts-S-A-T-and B--ladies and gentlemen. We also have our "annual" Choral Scholars Program. We have twelve scholarship positions for youth in 10th grade through college, who are continuing or planning to continue their education. It is simple! You participate and meet the requirements of Choral Scholars and you earn a scholarship for the season! Applications are available in the Church Office, the Music Kiosk in the Gathering Space, or the Office of the Minister of Music and Worship.

Spirit Express meets on Tuesdays at 7:15 PM for the Singers and at 7:45 PM for the Band with the Singers.

We, the Spirit Express, are committed to worship leadership and music in our 10:30 Service.

Mark your calendars for : The HANGING OF THE GREEN CHRISTMAS CONCERT with Orchestra on Friday, December 9, at 7 PM Come and hear the Choirs of First Lutheran and the Christmas Orchestra.

The ADVENT ADVENTURE--Wednesdays in Advent-Each Wednesday will include: - Devotions/Meditations in Bethany Hall at 11 AM (This Year's Theme is "Planting Seeds of Faith".)

- Gourmet Lunch will be held at 11:30 AM - Advent Recital will be held at 12:30 PM in the Sanctuary.

- Wednesday, November 30 features Holly Dalager, Oboe, Principal of the Austin Symphony Orchestra - Wednesday, December 7 features the Ovation String Duo from Minneapolis, MN - Wednesday, December 14 features Tim O'Shields "Christmas Is Here Again--It Never Gets Old!" Multimedia and Musical Presentation - Crèche Walk is Continuous--Visit Bethlehem, a Powerful display of Nativities, Angels, and Art Don't forget our Festival Thanksgiving Eve Service at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, November 23. We will give thanks and celebrate family and country through Bible Lessons and Musical Selections. The Honor Guard of the VFW and America Legion will present the Colors.

Don't forget our All Saints Sunday Services. The choir is singing "Out of the Deep" from John Rutter's Requiem, featuring Deb Cooper, Principal Violist of the Austin Symphony Orchestra. We will have a Procession of Remembrance and Honor for children who were baptized this year and for those members of FLC who passed away during this year. We will have this at the 8 and 10:30 Services. Thank you for your prayers, support, and participation in our Music Ministry. To God Be The Glory!

Report from Happiness Is a Blanket quilters, On October 8, 2016, the quilters sent 144 quilts on the Lutheran World Relief Van. During the time since the last Lutheran World Relief drive we have also given the Salvation Army 2 comforters, 4 blankets and 1 lap robe We also donated 2 quilts to Good Earth Village and 1 quilt to the American Legion Auxiliary.

We always welcome anyone interested in helping.

We meet on Tuesday mornings from 8:00 to 10:30 am. You do not have to know how to sew as there are various jobs to be done, such as tying, ripping, pressing and cutting blocks.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT FLC? ALL SAINTS SUNDAY On Sunday, November 6 we will celebrate “the communion of saints”. All faithful Christians, those in heaven and those living for God on earth, are counted among this communion.

The Church office is collecting Pop Tabs for the Ronald McDonald house in Rochester.

Save your Pop Tabs and help families utilized the Ronald McDonald House when they are hospitalized with a sick/Ill Child! Tabs can be dropped off at the Church office anytime!

The social ministry team will be selling Fair Trade Chocolate Bars

What is a Recharge? A Recharge is a weekend retreat at Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp in Milford, IA. The weekend consists of worship, skits, food, games, other youth, fellowship, craziness, fun, and much more. Recharges begin on Friday at 8 p.m. and end on Sunday 12:00 p.m.

Proverbs 3:9-10 We are well into fall, and the Holidays are soon here. I think for most of us the anticipation of joyful times to be spent with family and friends takes a little of the sting out of the bleak cold months of winter that we know are coming.

If you follow the financial figures elsewhere in these pages, you will notice that our envelope offerings follow a seasonal pattern. Envelope offering tends to fall off through the summer as people are away on vacations, but then picks up in September as Sunday School resumes. We count on a strong final quarter

to bring our finances back on track. This year, for reasons unknown, our August and September offerings have been well below average, leaving us with a projected deficit of around $13,000. This is especially concerning since we use the past year’s giving figures to estimate next year’s budget and this means we may need to trim the budget a bit in some areas.

Please look at your stewardship commitments for the rest of the year. Maybe you’ve fallen a bit behind in your giving goals, or maybe you have a little extra you can share. It’s not too late, and with your help we can finish with a strong year and continue to expand and spread Christ’s Word through our community and world.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT FLC? ALL SAINTS SUNDAY On Sunday, November 6 we will celebrate “the communion of saints”. All faithful Christians, those in heaven and those living for God on earth, are counted among this communion.

The Church office is collecting Pop Tabs for the Ronald McDonald house in Rochester.

Report from Happiness Is a Blanket quilters, On October 8, 2016, the quilters sent 144 quilts on the Lutheran World Relief Van. During the time since the last Lutheran World Relief drive we have also given the Salvation Army 2 comforters, 4 blankets and 1 lap robe We also donated 2 quilts to Good Earth Village and 1 quilt to the American Legion Auxiliary.

We always welcome anyone interested in helping.

We meet on Tuesday mornings from 8:00 to 10:30 am. You do not have to know how to sew as there are various jobs to be done, such as tying, ripping, pressing and cutting blocks.
