Dear Friends in Christ, The Generosity of God and our Generosity It’s remarkable to me that God is ready for anything. He is ready with His love for you and me at our deepest time of need. The cross shows this: But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) This demonstration of His love shows His generous grace towards us: And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace. (John 1:16) God’s generosity towards us is witnessed throughout Scripture: ... God, who gives generously to all without finding fault... (James 1:5b) Wow! What a good, gracious and generous God we have!

As winter now turns to spring, the generosity of creation is demonstrated in the abundance of greenery all around us. It just feels good to be outside on a bright and warm spring day.

God’s love and generosity calls forth a response from us. Of course, knowing of Jesus’ death and resurrection calls us to faith and to commit our lives to His care and to serve Him with all our hearts. It also calls us to respond in generosity in other areas of life. I recently read:

Generosity according to the Scriptures is among other things:  A hallmark of a good life: "The generous will prosper." (Proverbs 11:25)  A natural response to God's generosity: "Everything we have has come from You, and we give You only what You first gave us." (I Chronicles 29:14)  A benchmark of our love for God: "I was hungry and you fed Me. I was thirsty, and you gave Me drink... When you did it to one of the least of these My brothers and sisters, you were doing it to Me." (Matthew 25:34-40)  A principal way to obey Christ: "Share each other's burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ." (Galatians 6:2)* We have opportunities to respond, and to be ready to respond to needs in our church and community.

You are invited to consider these coming up:  National Day of Prayer service with our whole Community at 6:30 pm, Thursday, May 3, at First Presbyterian Church—generous in prayer for the community and unity of our nation.  Disaster Training to be part of our local Volunteer Organization Active in Disaster (V.O.A.D.).

This is scheduled for 1:00 pm, Sunday, May 6, here at First Lutheran Church. This will help us be generous to help locally or regionally when disasters, such as the floods of September 2016, strike our neighbors.  LWR Ingathering—Saturday, May 19, 7:00–11:00 am  ShineFest 2018—a week of Christian service to a neighborhood in Albert Lea May 20-24.

Sign up with Phil Wacholz and the team at church to be a part of this.  And, of course, generosity in our financial giving and serving in the mission and ministry of First Lutheran Church. ...The list could go on...

I am so heartened by all of you who so selflessly and generously give of your time and resources to serve one another in a myriad of ways. Plus, its fun & fulfilling as we do it together. A meeting of the Congregation will be held on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at 9:15 am in Bethany Hall. The business that will be conducted will be to propose a change to Bylaw , Part III #1. The annual meeting of the congregation shall be held in January at a date to be specified by the Church Council.

The Church Council would like to propose changing the annual meeting to be held in November each year. In doing so the church will be operating under an approved budget starting January 1st and also we will be able to engage congregation members before they head south for the winter.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT FLC? FROM THE LIBRARY CORNER The Library Board wishes to thank you for all the generous book donations we are receiving. We have been purchasing some new books, but donations are the backbone of our collection. The adult shelves have always been filled by wonderful givers, and now our new children’s collection has been the recipient of new and gently-used books. Recently, a picture book series on forgiveness, respect and thankfulness was given. It is simply done with colorful illustrations.

The World is Awake: a celebration of everyday blessings, written by Linsey Davis, has just been added to the children’s corner. A gorgeous picture book, it inspires young readers to be thankful for all God’s blessings in their daily lives. Another new picture book, Grandpa Green

by Lane Smith, has very intriguing illustrations and "explores aging, memory and the bonds of family history and love”. Visit the library, donate to the library, check out our books!

Upcoming Volunteer Appreciation Open House that will be held on Wednesday, June 20th, 2018, from noon to 2:00 pm. Those that come get a delicious meal and a little gift for their awesome volunteer work that they do here at First Lutheran Church! LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF INGATHERING The Social Ministry Team of First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea will host its Spring Lutheran World Relief Ingathering on Saturday, May 19, from 7-11am. PLEASE NOTE the EARLIER HOURS!! A semi-trailer, donated by Crossroads Trailer of Albert Lea, will be in the parking lot behind the church, off of St. Mary's Avenue (east side of church). Follow the Enter and Exit signs.

Mission Quilts, Fleece Tied Blankets, Personal Care Kits, Fabric Kits, Baby Care Kits, School Kits, and Bars of Soap will be collected. Please follow the General Assembly & Packing Instructions as listed in the LWR Quilt & Kits Ministry Guide. Pack the donations in sturdy & easy-to-handle boxes secured with packing tape. Remember the weight limit is 40 pounds!

2017-18 Quilt & Kit Guides will be distributed.

Monetary donations for the LWR Quilt & Kit Shipping Fund will be forwarded to the LWR office in Baltimore, Maryland. Make checks payable to LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF. We use the tally below to report what we have collected to LWR. Our Fall Ingathering is scheduled for October 13, 2018.

A Word From the Satre’s THE WHOLE NEW TESTAMENT NOW AVAILABLE IN NGOMBA!

The gospel of Luke in Ngomba came out at the end of 2008 with much fanfare. The four gospels and Acts came out a few years later without much ado. Now the entire New Testament is out! The cover is sturdy green plastic and has golden images of a cross with a sun behind it and a dove flying over it and at the top it says “Kaa Fi” (pronounced kahh FEE), New Covenant. The pages are thin and fairly big, and the print is large and easy to read.

SCOTT’S ‘GOSPEL MINUTE’ IN NGOMBA Scott had a burden to speak and so had prepared a message. After receiving the gift of a fancy traditional hat and bag as one of the partners in the translation, Scott was given 5 minutes to address the crowd at the dedication in Ngomba.

SURVIVORS OF SUICIDE LOSS SUPPORT GROUP Survivors of Suicide Loss Support Group will meet Tuesday, May 15, 2018 from 6:30 to 7:30pm. Anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide is

MUSICAL NOTES Wow! It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of Eastertide (Easter Season). Thanks to all of you for your commitment and participation to tell the stories of Jesus Christ through Holy Week. Our Choir so beautifully ushered Christ into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday as they sang, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Sing Hosanna!" It was so moving to see Jesus wash Peter's feet on Maundy Thursday. We were all in the Upper Room with Christ and the Twelve as we broke bread together and drank from the Cup of Salvation during our Maundy Thursday Lord's Supper. The Theology and personal stories that each of our speakers shared on Good Friday for the 'last seven words Christ spoke on the cross" were profound. To see an inter-generational effort to tell the stories of Salvation from the Old Testament in our Easter Vigil was a true CELEBRATION. We witnessed Moses and the Israelites crossing the Red Sea. We witnessed the dry bones come to life in the Valley of Dry Bones. We witnessed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego walk safely out of the hot furnace. Then, we celebrated the glorious Resurrection of our Lord with trumpets and singing! Alleluia! Christ is Risen! Now, the story continues! Please join us on Thursday, May 10th in the Sanctuary for the Celebration of the Ascension of Our Lord. Then, please join us on Sunday, May 20th for the Day of Pentecost.

FLC YOUTH ANNOUNCEMENTS Thank you for opening your doors for the Southern Minnesota Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) weekend retreat. You allowed us to share the love of our Lord with more youth this weekend and we are very grateful for that!

The Garden Project This summer our 7th—12th students will be growing a garden again. They will partner with a local farmer to grow produce and donate it to homeless organizations.

They will plan, prepare the soil, plant, harvest the garden and then visit local homeless organizations to distribute the food. We will give updates through the summer of our progress.

Who is Feed My Starving Children?

Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children, and ship those meals to nearly 70 countries around the world.

The cookbook committee would like to thank all of you that have submitted recipes so far. We have a great variety and are approaching one of our goals, 400 minimum recipes. However, we are still missing recipes from some of our families, and the time is getting shorter. The deadline for recipe submission is July 1, 2018. We appreciate the numbers of recipes submitted, but feel that at this point, we must limit the number of recipes from any one family to 15.

Thank you for sharing your family heirlooms and being so creative in the variety you are submitting. We would still like more recipes from the men of the house. We also would like more kids favorites. When submitting your recipe, please check for the following information:       

Size of casserole, pan or baking dish to be used Baking time or cooking time and temperature Size of package or can you are suggesting for use Whether mayonnaise must be used, or a substitute will work If butter is in the recipe, will margarine work as well Due to nut allergies, if nuts can be optional in the recipe Bake or cook covered or uncovered

Be sure to provide the first and last names of people submitting in memory if different from yours, i.e., children submitting for parents or other family members.

Following these tips will save us phone calls to clarify information. Again, thank you so much for your participation. We will continue to accept recipes until July 1st.

If you wish to order cookbooks in advance, forms will be available at the Welcome Center and on the table outside the church office. The order form is on the back of the recipe form. FLCW JULY FIELD TRIP - SATURDAY, JULY 21, 2018 Lunch at Green Lea @ 12 Noon Beauty and the Beast at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets have been reserved on a first come first serve basis. They are $20 per ticket. Please sign up in the church office and pay for your ticket to reserve your space. A separate sign up will be required for the lunch @ Green Lea. Deadline for reservations is Friday, June 8.

We are aware that some have season tickets for the play that have an assigned date. If you have a season ticket and will be attending the play on a different date, please join us for lunch. You are also welcome to sign up just for lunch and not the play.

All the women of the church are welcome. We look forward to this time of fun and fellowship together.
