FOREVER: God loves us with an “everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3).

CALL ME: God longs to be in fellowship with us. We can talk to him anytime in prayer (Jeremiah 33:3).

LOVE ME: The greatest commandment is to love God with our whole being (Luke 10:27).

SWEET TALK: God’s words are sweeter than honey (Psalm 119:103).

BE GOOD: We show our love for Christ by keeping his commands (John 14:15).

Great Things Ahead I’ve been thinking about the Frank Sinatra song line, “The best is yet to come, and won’t that be fine.” This one line can serve as our theme because we may not have the greatest outlook when it comes to our future. I’ve been noticing that it is getting harder and harder for people to have a positive outlook on things like politics, the economy, the weather, health care, jobs, the community, for themselves, you name it. It appears that negativity has become the new norm, yet we know that’s not true. For every negative thing there are 10 positive things that are happening, we just don’t hear about it as much or as loud as the bad stuff.

So, I’m challenging our congregation to be agents of positive thinking and positive speech. I’m not asking for people to have a false perspective or to engage in fluff. On the contrary, we need to be real with each other. We need to let each other know the value we see in each other and in our community. We need a breath of fresh air to blow away the stale, dried out doldrums where we get stuck in our same old ruts. We need to change our tone, to speak to each other in a new way, to be the new creation that God is calling us to be and to take part in it.

God is doing some amazing things in our community. High School students are volunteering for community service projects like Night to Shine, which is for disabled students age 14-19 to experience a prom night atmosphere and celebrates their giftedness. Our handmade Prayer Shawls are being tearfully received by home bound and hospital patients as a sign of God’s love for those suffering through hard times. Our outreach with and to the Salvation Army, Youth for Christ, and Helping Families Fund allow us to help families with needs right here in our Albert Lea community. Our Sunday School and Youth Programs partner with parents to provide faith formation opportunities that enhance family life and promote a life-long relationship with Jesus Christ. We do so much in, with, and for the community that we cannot adequately fit or describe in this article. The problem is this: what we do is the best kept secret in town.

Great things have happened; Great things are happening; and Great things are ahead. Let’s start talking up all the positive things going on right here in First Lutheran Church and in our community, people need to know. My thought is that it would be a welcomed conversation in place of the usual stuff. What will you say?

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE High School Senior Scholarships & Current College Age Student Scholarships

(All applications will be mailed to all FLC member high school seniors except for Matching Scholarships and Evelyn D. Stadheim Memorial Nurses Scholarship)

High School Senior Scholarships

FLC will be presenting scholarship awards to FLC member high school seniors at the High School Awards Program this Spring. The applicants will be selected based on involvement with church activities since Confirmation, community service and academic achievement.

Kimberly (Olson) Goddard Memorial Scholarship

FLC has available the Kimberly (Olson) Goddard Memorial Scholarship. The recipient must be a member of FLC and preference is given to first year nursing (RN or LPN) students or first year students in any of the other medical fields.

Gordon D. Aas Memorial Theater/Fine Arts Scholarship

FLC has available the Gordon D. Aas Memorial Theater/Fine Arts Scholarship. The recipient must be a member of FLC who is currently or who will be pursuing higher education in Theater or English, Music, Visual Arts, or another area of the Fine Arts

Bill Hammer Memorial Scholarship

FLC has available the Bill Hammer Memorial Scholarship. Qualifications: pursuing a four year education in business or accounting; active member in a Christian church; 3.0 grade point average; and involvement in at least one extracurricular activity throughout the high school years.

Matthew C. Nesse Memorial Scholarship

FLC has available the Matthew C. Nesse Memorial Scholarship. This recipient must be an ALHS senior, reside in Freeborn County, plan to pursue further education in the visual arts and/or graphic design, have a high school grade point average 3.0 or higher. Although it is not required, preference will be given to an applicant that is a member of First Lutheran Church.

Matching Scholarships

The FLC Scholarship Committee may consider awarding scholarships to 2 nd, 3rd & 4th year college students from FLC who are eligible for matching funds from their college. If interested, please pick up an application from the church office. (Many ELCA related colleges provide this kind of program.) Please, contact your college financial aid office to determine if you qualify to receive matching funds.

Evelyn D. Stadheim Memorial Nurses Scholarship

The Evelyn D. Stadheim Memorial Nurses Scholarship is available for students pursuing a career in nursing. Applications will be available from the Naeve Hospital Nurses Alumni Association.

Norm and Joyce Fredin Scholarship Application

Any student having successfully completed one semester in a 4 year college is eligible to apply for a $500 scholarship towards tuition and/or books to continue their education in a 4 year college. Recipients must be members of FLC Albert Lea for at least one year. Must be first degree applicants only. No second degree applicants.

The scholarship will be awarded upon successfully completing one semester at a 4 year college.

If you do not receive one, please, contact Julie Schewe in the church office.

Applications will be due Thursday, March 23, 2017.

MUSICAL NOTES Happy February! Whether we are called in vocational service in the church or as lay ministers--as God's eyes and hands on the earth, it is all about SURRENDER. When we surrender our will, our ways, our choices to our Lord, then we will have peace in our lives. There words are the lyrics for a little song I wrote for the Installation of Pastor Forde in 2016. It is called I Surrender: We are made by the hands of God, He gives us breath and life. His purpose--in our lives to fill; surrounded by His light. We are taught by the Word of God--Our light, our Hope, our Guide. His promise and His love to share with others by our side. Holy Lord, make me your eyes and hands--to do your work each day. I surrender my life to you. I will follow all the way. We are called by the Will of God-- to follow as He leads. To be the one that He would have us be--In our words, our thoughts, our deeds. Holy Lord, make me your eyes and hands--to do your work each day. I surrender my life to you. I will follow all the way. We are sealed by the blood of Christ--His death that we may live. Unselfish love and grace untold--His precious life to give. We are blessed by God's grace each day--unending--undeserved. It truly is amazing grace as promised

by God's Word. Holy Lord, make me your eyes and hands--to do your work each day. I surrender my life to you. I will follow all the way.

Rays of Light Children's Choir (K-Grade 4)-Wednesdays: 3:30-4:15 PM Sounds of Joy Children's Choir (Grades 5-9) - Wednesdays: 4:15-5:15 PM The First Lutheran Church Hand Bell Choir-Wednesdays: 5:30-6:25 PM The First Lutheran Church Choir meets on Wednesdays at 6:30-8 PM. We also have our annual Choral Scholars Program for youth in 10th grade through college, who are continuing or planning to continue their education. It is simple! You participate and meet the requirements of Choral Scholars and you earn a scholarship for the season! Applications are available in the Church Office, the Music Kiosk in the Gathering Space, or the Office of the Minister of Music and Worship.

Spirit Express meets on Tuesdays at 7:15 PM for the Singers and at 7:45 PM for the Band with the Singers. We the Spirit Express are committed to worship leadership and music in our 10:30 Service.
