+ Rejoice in the Lord! + Dear Friends in Christ, Have you noticed, when you are watching a movie or television show, how the background music sets the tone for the scene? It could be a nice pleasant scene on the screen, but the music tells you that something foreboding is about to happen. Or, when things are resolved in the drama, the music has a flourish telling us that things are better now. In a similar way, the music we sing, whistle or hear on our devices or radios, can set the tone of our outlook and attitude during the day. In Psalm 57, David shares these words with us: 7 My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music. 8 Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. 9 I will praise You, Lord, among the nations; I will sing of You among the peoples. 10 For great is Your love, reaching to the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the skies. For David, music was the rhythm for his life and faith. God said of David that he was “a man after my own heart”. (I Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22) It showed in his music. The Psalms, especially, are replete with the lyrics to David’s beloved psalms, hymns and spiritual songs of praise. The Apostle Paul encouraged the believers in Ephesus, and us, in Ephesians 5: Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. The music in our lives makes a significant impact on our outlook, spirit, attitude and joy in life, no matter what our circumstances. Choose your music carefully. Let our Sunday worship overflow into your daily life. Christmas music is bursting on our auditory scene this time of year. Let it embrace you with the hope, love and joy that comes from Jesus. “Joy to the World, the Lord is come. Let earth receive her King”... in our music. + + + What a scare it was when Pastor Jan Crissinger had her car crash on November 3! We praise God for sparing her life, and, now, for the beginning of a good recovery. She will be moving rather gingerly the next few weeks as she continues healing. Let’s all keep her in our prayers as this woman, determined to serve the Lord with her whole self, paces herself, rests often and continues to serve FLC with joy. + + + What a great response to our Fall Stewardship Appeal around the theme Spirit of Giving ! It is so good to set a goal for giving that puts substance to good intentions. For those of you who have not yet submitted your Spirit of Giving “Statement of Intent for 2020” card, there is still time to do so. Paper cards are available in the church office, from an usher on Sundays, or you can respond to the link on our website, or scan this QR code on your mobile device. We are well on our way to the minimum goal of receiving 240 “Statement of Intent for 2020” responses, which Spirit of Giving Intent Card QRCode will release the special $5,000 Challenge Grant. Let’s not leave that grant unused. + + + At this time of year, I reflect on all for which I am thankful. Thank you all for being among the most special gifts in my life and for the privilege of being your pastor and sharing in the lives of you faithful people—your struggles, your joys—as a community together, who rejoice that in Christ we live... ...In the Light of His Love,

Pastor John F. Holt 2

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT FLC? Library Corner The Christmas Season’s here and you may want to be reading books that are lighter and happier and have the Christmas Spirit in them. I recommend visiting your FLC Library where you will find many Christmas books. One of my favorite series found in our library is the “Mitford Series” by Jan Karon. The Library has all thirteen books of the series among them is “Shepherds Abiding” with Father Tim and all your favorite people of Mitford in them. You will get to know and love all the residents of Mitford and hate to see each book end. If you need to give a devotion for a meeting, circle, Women of the Church, Ministry Team, or Church Council, check out the devotion books in the Library. There is a new one “Jesus Calling for Christmas” by Sarah Young that is perfect for the season there is also Christmas ideas. The Library Board has pulled out all Christmas-related books we have and placed them on a cart that will be in the Office Lobby each Sunday. We would love to have you look them over and check out some for your Holiday reading.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS OF LOVE First Lutheran is offering 2 ways to honor your loved ones at Christmas time: Flowers: Poinsettias in memory of or in honor of loved ones may be ordered for placement by the Altar in the Chancel area on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The cost per plant is $12. Your gift right now will go TWICE as far to help feed a hungry family.

Food: Your gift toward ELCA Hunger Appeal can be given in memory of or in honor of someone or a special event. You can choose to make a direct donation to ELCA World Hunger, on line or in the mail. A group of Lutheran World Relief donors has challenged you to join them in making a Christmas gift this year that they will match dollar for dollar up to $225,000. Deadline December 25, 2019. Orders for either food or flowers may be placed in the church office. We will publish names and donors for orders made and paid for by Tuesday, December 17, 2019!

HELPING OTHERS IN NEED The Social Ministry Commission/Team is sponsoring the Salvation Army Christmas Angel Tree & Mitten Tree (Trees are set up in the Gathering Space) A few pointers: You can take a tag or tags and purchase something for a child of that age. (Most people spend $15-25). Return your gifts unwrapped to the tree by Friday, December 6, 2019 with the Angel Tree tag. If you would like you may include the wrapping paper as part of the gift and the parent can wrap it. The Mitten Tree is there for your donations of hats, mittens, and scarves. Personal Visitation by the Pastors To support people at the time of illness or injury, pastors do make personal visits in hospitals, homes or Care Centers. Many hospitals, like the Mayo’s Methodist & St. Mary’s Hospitals in Rochester no longer give pastors access to lists of patients. So, if we happen to be there visiting someone, and we don’t know about someone else hospitalized, we have no way of discovering that person any more. Hospitals do NOT call pastors/churches to inform them of admissions, and have not for decades. So, please, call, if you want us to know.

We try to be available in emergencies. Do not hesitate to call the church (373-6424), if you have not seen a pastor and would like to request a visit. If you call the church office after hours and get the recording, keying option ❸ will send your call directly to the pastor on call. No name is automatically put on a printed prayer list. We ask permission before we include a name on our printed prayer list. Please, let us know if you want to be on the prayer list or be visited. ~Your FLC Pastors
