Lowestoft’s midsummer festival returns to celebrate one full cycle of the solstice sun in Britain’s most easterly town.

WELCOME As the days reach their longest, and the sun its brightest, First Light Festival returns to Lowestoft’s South Beach to celebrate the solstice weekend: a magical union of sea and stars in this very special, most easterly town.

This is a festival unlike any other. We’re the UK’s only beach-based multi-arts festival, making the most of our town’s stunning seaside position. There’s non-stop action across the 24 hours, during daylight hours and throughout the night. It’s unticketed and free for all, with over 140 things to see, hear, do and try.

Dance until dawn under the midsummer sky, or join the masses for our collective kite fly-along finale. Explore our planet with pioneers at the forefront of climate change research, or jive along to Greased Lightnin’. Camp under the stars and gather together on the shore to witness a new dawn break over the horizon.

If you’re local to Lowestoft or an out-of-towner visiting for the first time, we hope that you’ll embrace the spirit of the Festival and feel a strong sense of community, as we celebrate this unique moment, together.

Get Planet Positive Natural History Museum, University of Essex, Cefas and Association of Suffolk Museums present a mind blowing series of science and nature activities

Wild Beach Camping Pitch your tent under the stars and spend the weekend next to the lapping waves at our pop-up campsite, a stone’s throw from the Festival site. Campervan spots available too!

Beach Feasts with Nicola Hordern Top chef Nicola Hordern is serving up three locally sourced feasts to keep you fuelled across the weekend

INTRODUCING FRIDAY ON THE BEACH: Feasts & Films We’re kicking off the party early with Friday on the Beach – a pre-Weekend warm-up night of food and cinema on South Beach.

Start your evening with a a delicious local meal by award-winning Chef Nicola Hordern, cooked and served right on the beach.

Then, step across the sand and pick up your headphones as we screen the 1927 silent classic, Sunrise, with acclaimed pianist Stephen Horne providing a live improvised score as the sun sets.

With beach camping and campervan pitches available, you’ll be able to nest down in the dunes and wake up fresh-faced on Saturday as we kick off our 24 hours of First Light festivities.

Famous for being Britain’s most easterly point, Lowestoft’s setting at the gateway to the beautiful Broads, combined with wide golden sands, have made the town a holiday destination since Victorian times.
