Welcome January 2019 is a unique edition of the First Fortnight festival. First Fortnight is hosting the European Mental Health Art & Culture Festival. This festival aims to showcase the vibrancy of modern Ireland with an emphasis on the European community resident in Ireland that lives and works together every day. As it continues to expand, there have been over 140 submissions coming from 22 different countries and this year promises to be better than ever. We are working for an exponential change in how we as people understand and respond to the human challenge of a mental health problem. We do this every day. In a study of perceived stigma in 815 adults with significant mental health disability across 6 European countries, 46.7% reported embarrassment, and 18% reported discrimination experiences, resulting in 14.8% with perceived stigma (Alonso et al., 2009). Since 2011, First Fortnight has conducted an annual survey to assess the attitudes of festival attendees regarding mental health matters. Out of the 1,517 people who responded in 2018, almost half (47%) of those surveyed would not want people to know if they were experiencing mental health problems, 28% found it hard to speak with someone with mental health illness and 56% were afraid of experiencing mental health difficulties in the future (Moloney, 2018 First Fortnight Policy Paper; Mental Health and Stigma in Europe). The challenges Mental Health poses to society are set down in wellestablished patterns. First Fortnight is here at the beginning of every year to unapologetically disrupt those patterns and ask for more, better and different efforts to address and make better Ireland's attitude and behaviour when it comes to mental health problems and those that experience them. Meeting place is Blackrock Sunday Market where we'll set out from the Marina and down by the Atlantic Pond before returning to the market for coffee and chats. 4

First Fortnight’s intimate, eclectic mix of music, poetry and spoken word returns to Cork. The line up includes the 6 time Munster Slam Champ, Fergus Costello and the rising voice of Alana Daly Mulligan and Kevin P. Gilday, the award winning writer and spoken word artist from Glasgow.

Join curator Tadhg Crowley as we explore the new Glucksman digital toolkit for educators – Art and Mental Health. In this masterclass, teachers will investigate ways to engage their students in artistic processes that creatively explore and seek to understand our mental health using artworks from the University College Cork art collection.

Polish visual artist Andrzej Mazur works collaboratively with 12 people experiencing homelessness helping them to describe their own personal journeys and map them across Europe with multiple strands of thread, intersecting and reaching Ireland

The new toolkit is designed for educators from Primary to Third level.

Tormented Teachers (Anxiety in the Staffroom)

The Crossover is a multi-disciplinary performance art project initiated in 2018 in Cork City featuring collaborations between Cork performance poets, rappers, musicians and visual artists.

Sat 12 Jan, 2pm The Glucksman, University College Cork

After collaborative adventures in Cork City and Vancouver, The Crossover comes to The Kino in the spirit of promoting positive mental health.

D

It aims to highlight expression as a vital activity for someone experiencing mental health difficulties. The performance is dedicated to the late Dublin poet Paul Curran. 6

After lunch, the focus switches to teachers and their own mental health while working in an often-stressful environment. Following a reading from writer and teacher Sorcha Grisewood, a panel featuring teachers will explore the topic of people with mental health issues holding positions of responsibility, and what mental health supports exist for teachers.

Free (Donations gratefully accepted)

Having used creativity as the foundation to recover from depression, Stanley Notte shares his story, techniques and theories on how creativity can positively influence our mental health.

Members of the public can contribute their own thread to a central art piece to stand alongside 12 individual works. THREADS aims to promote mental health through therapeutic art and craft sessions by mapping and contrasting the life journeys of socially excluded migrant homeless.

Joining Stanley will be the Lost Gecko and Mummy Harmony. Stanley's direct and honest approach offers listeners an opportunity to be inside the head of an unhappy man struggling to understand the world, and outlines the journey that brought Stanley to the moment of diagnosis, and the winding road, he travelled while getting well.

The Mendicity Institution is the oldest working charity in Dublin. Established in 1818, it has been in operation for 200 years creating opportunities for people experiencing homelessness, isolation and marginalisation. 7

Emma is an artist and mother of two.

An exhibition of colourful energetic and emotive paintings which celebrates the coming together of an inspirational group of people telling stories of struggles with mental health during their life at some point.

Her work is inspired by her own journey to recovery from perinatal mental health issues she experienced after her first birth.

Artist Emma Sheridan met each of the sitters to start a conversation about their experiences. By connecting these people Emma is communicating the idea that mental health may be each faced alone by those affected while being part of a wider, invisible community.

Warpaint shows that we are never on our own despite appearances during those dark times. All of these people have experienced their own version of human suffering and found different ways to recover. This shows the incredible capacity for people to heal which is a message of hope we would like to teach others.

Joe Caslin and Gearoid O'Dea will be facilitating mental health and art themed workshops on

Wed 16 Jan and Wed 9 Jan respectively at 3 & 6pm

IF is an installation created by Scottish artist Angela Lloyd in memory of a young, close friend who tragically took his life following a long period of struggling with mental illness.

The Europe Direct Information Centre Waterford is delighted to partner with the Walls Project during the First Fortnight Festival to create a mental health themed artwork piece.

The rationale behind this piece is twofold: firstly, to raise awareness of the high mortality rates linked to impaired mental health and secondly; to facilitate a space that allows the universal recognition and sharing of the pain of sudden loss.

The artwork will be painted directly on a wall space in the young adult area of Waterford Central Library. The aim of the artwork will be to open up discussion around mental health issues and will be accompanied by a display stand of leaflets and books on mental health topics.

Audience participation is welcomed. 10

Island of the Hungry Ghosts is a feature length documentary film directed by Gabrielle Brady set on the remote Christmas Island. Poh Lin is a trauma counsellor living on the remote Christmas Island with her young family. She works with people trying to seek asylum to Australia who have been detained in a high security detention facility, deep within the island’s jungle.

The film chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experience of survival and recovery in a family coping with addiction over many years.

The island is one of the last discovered places on earth, with humans having migrated to its shores less than a century ago.

This will be a special premiere of the film before its national release on January 18th. "Timothée Chalamet and Steve Carell shine" ★★★★ The Independent

Revolving around the theme of recovery, and expression through art, the evening promises to stir emotions and provide a giggle. Amongst a variety of poets and singers, guests include the seanchaí of Iveragah Sean O’Laoghaire and international award winning comedian Joe Rooney.

We encourage carers throughout Ireland to take a break this January and have their own tea sessions together!

See you in Kerry! 28

They are followed by the 20-strong Mullingar PCC Choir, made up of local health workers from Mullingar Primary Care Centre.

There will be speakers from Little Things, the HSE’s mental health campaign and safeTALK, the HSE’s suicide alertness for everyone training programme.

Bobby & The Blunts are a Mullingar four-piece funk rock band who aim to ‘play music that makes you feel good and boogie’. They have played Electric Picnic, headlined Whelan’s of Dublin and have shared stages with other Irish acts such as The Blizzards and Mik Pyro.

Ricotta Rojo are a three-piece band who will flip your world into a craze of rumbling rhythms. Their blend of blues, funk and rock will be tempered by the swing and jazz of the Clara Swing Band.

A cult figure in the Dublin music scene, Paddy Hanna’s latest album Frankly I Mutate is bursting full of his morose charm and sardonic wit. Irish Times Electric Picnic Review praised him for his “indie-rock showmanship”, don’t miss out on this chance to see him live.

Join us at the First Fortnight Big Gig 2019 for a big night of music and dancing. As always, The Big Gig brings together a very special lineup of artists. Wordsmith and songwriter Molly Sterling’s music is moulded by dark and affecting lyrics, wrapped up in grounding piano riffs and stirring vocals.

We look forward to welcoming Longford four-piece Brave Giant to the Big Gig line up. Brave Giant are an indie/folk band that has been steadily making a mark on the music scene over the last two years, with their skilful blend of rock, folk and alternative sounds.

Attendees will be invited to participate by listening to the concert and then visually interpret what they hear through the medium of drawing. All art materials will be provided.

You might just leave it there.

Join Raven & The Crone on their mission to explore this. They believe that stories need weaving, truths need telling and questions need answers. Raven & The Crone are looking for trouble… and worries, your worries. So bring the rough stuff with you. Give it a night out on the town.

Created and performed with community participants and professional performers WOMB creates a parallel perspective on woman and society. “Woman in form has always been the same. Woman’s welfare has been dictated by the regime that she lives in.” We will be transported to the dystopian world of Dublin 100 years from now. Home sharing has become the mandate; democratic dictators rule and technological advancements impact on the physical and mental health of woman and health care providers. This project is funded by the Arts Council, developed in partnership with the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital, supported by Dublin City Council and Axis Ballymun.

Winner Best Design Award Dublin Fringe Festival 2018 “For work that encompasses outstanding lighting, sound, scenic, projection, costume and overall design”

Captain’s Log, Stardate (whatever).

Gifty Wiafe, is a young woman from Ghana now living in Germany, who lights up the stage with her unique blend of humour, heart, wit and truth.

“… courtesy of a wonderful script by Petra Kindler, Wiafe’s prowess at storytelling was evident as she conjured humorous anecdotes on diverse issues ranging from religion, imported food, visa problems, migration, gender issues, snow, traffic offences, e-waste, culture shock, traditions and spirituality.”

She dances, tells stories, plays drums and sings. “Of course” - some Europeans quickly conclude “that’s in her blood somehow, isn’t it?”

“…a remarkably clever piece of comedy that reminds us of past experiences alongside issues that currently confront us.”

But Gifty Wiafe begs to differ! A modern intermediary between cultures and continents, she takes us on a roller-coaster of a personal and intercontinental journey.

“…thought - provoking without being preachy while exposing uncomfortable truths about the world.” Daily Graphic, Accra 38

A star-bound journey that looks at mental health and the stories we tell ourselves when we feel most alone. Winner of the First Fortnight Award at the Dublin Fringe Festival 2018 this piece takes us on a journey with a lone astronaut as they hurtle through the cosmos on a one-way mission to the edge of the universe. She’s looking for a light in the dark. The source of a signal. Traversing time and space, isolation and uncertainty, her quest to find hope will bring her to the brink of the abyss.

Nomination Best Performer Award Dublin Fringe Festival 2018 “spectacular, witty, fascinating and captivating… In short, Infinity is exceptional.” Emma Plotkin, Fringe Review Must See Show

An exploration of fact, (science) fiction and the spaces in between.

“The piece is very open about the problems of modern life and how anxiety and inner turmoil can take hold. Nessa talks on the subject with an honestly that is impressive… [INFINITY is] an impressive analogy for the solitude and remoteness that we can experience in our daily lives.” No More Workhorse

Created in association with Corn Exchange Theatre Company and Mermaid Arts Centre. Supported by UCD through the inaugural UCD Dramsoc Companyin-Residence Award. Infinity was developed at Scene + Heard 2017 and developed at FRINGE LAB with the support of Dublin Fringe Festival. Contains use of strobe lighting. 39

(Dr. Yvonne Quinn, Senior Clinical Psychologist, will attend both performances for a short talk afterwards on available support services for new parents with time for Q and A.)

An ambitious and affecting new work in development, In Two Minds looks at the realities of living with bipolar disorder - from the giddy singalongs of a high to the grinding depths of a low - in all its colour and chaos and presents a compelling and very human insight into the charms and challenges of a fascinating and often misunderstood condition.

Gilly O Shea’s popular one-woman exploration of motherhood returns with a twist... “Sally + Stephen + 2 bottles of Malbec = Heidi. An unexpected pregnancy has changed Sally’s life. But at least she still gets to see her friends (in photos) and to wash her hair (but not condition it). Mum, mam, mutter… whatever you go by, it’s the most difficult job you’ll ever have.

The performance will be followed by a Q&A session. Originally commissioned by Belltable: Connect, development of In Two Minds has been supported by The Arts Council, Limerick City and County Council, Fishamble’s New Play Clinic, Community Foundation Ireland and The JP McManus Benevolent Fund.

This time Sally would like new parents to hear her story without having to book a babysitter, so B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Baby) to the ‘Mammy Matinees’.Dads/ guardians are welcome too. No baby? No problem! Come to an evening show. 40

Directed by Ben Barnes, The Scourge (writer and performer Michelle Dooley Mahon) relives visits to her mother Siobhan in a nursing home after she has been struck down by Alzheimer’s disease or what the scourge calls "death by a thousand cuts".

From the church to the psychiatric ward, Stephen’s life started with Jesus and almost ended with the Tellytubbies.

Through her humorous and moving memories, we are introduced to a nostalgic archive of an ordinary Irish small-town family forced to become extraordinary in their attempt to cope and the morphing of the scourge from wide eyed child into enfant terrible to obese depressed recluse and her re-emergence as a creator of her one woman show Shellshock.

Childhood Sundays were for watching Dad deliver sermons and Mam lead evangelical worship time, but how do you survive being so uncool in 90s Ireland? Comedian Stephen Mullan shares his coming-of-age story about a boy who was brought to the edge of his own life, and who lives to tell the hilarious tale of how sexcapades, drug overdoses and a surprise baby meant that he was, in his own way, born again.

The Scourge was commissioned by Wexford Arts Centre with support from Artlinks and the production is supported by Arts Council Ireland and Wexford County Council. 41

Based on the writings and testimonies of people living with mental health issues, Lysis is a docudrama that traces the experiences of five individuals.

In Between Silence, where we really exist is a sensory experience and a master class in storytelling, using beautiful soundscapes to subtly underscore the beautiful complexity of the human experience.

This audio-visual installation is a forthright portrait of people side-lined by society through everyday stigma, prejudice and general ignorance toward mental health.

Presented in a unique format devised by groundbreaking artist STANO, it has been described as Theatre of the Mind.

Lysis journeys through psychosis and toward recovery, challenging for the right to be recognised beyond diagnoses. A celebration of the genuine strength of human character.

Featuring stories by some of Ireland’s finest writers and artists, "with this collection, STANO is producing a reservoir of stories of our lives, of what it’s like to be in the world" Dermot Bolger.

Co-Motion is a moving musical experience that allows you to share songs that speak to you and form new connections through music. Music speaks to us all across all languages. Using headphones and headphone splitters, you’ll be randomly assigned a walking partner with whom you’ll share your playlist as you stroll around the Botanic Gardens.

This is a subject that is becoming increasingly relevant as a number of reports are identifying links between our wellbeing and access to nature. Following their attendance at a Plant Network training event at the Eden Project, Brendan Gilsenen, craft gardener, and Charlotte Salter-Townshend, guide, will present their learnings with an illustrated presentation.

Behind every favourite song is a story, so share them with someone new. Eurovision songs are optional! All you need is your songs on a playlist, a device to play them on and headphones.

Food is often eaten on the go instead of together at a table, but does this mean we miss out on more than a few nutrients?

All Ireland winning hurler Seamus Hennessy will be in conversation with Jim Carroll talking about his life in hurling and his experiences growing up dealing with the traumatic experience of his mother’s suicide.

At this event, we will share a table side discussion while sampling tasty food prepared by Cooking For Freedom and explore some of the negative effects of losing this table time has had as well as themes of isolation, support, integration and identity.

Seamus has helped to raise awareness around the issue of suicide particularly in relation to helping families cope with the tragedy of suicide.

Our primary speaker for the evening is Mavis Ubuntu from Cooking For Freedom, an initiative allowing women from a direct provision centre to cook for their families.

Seamus is about to embark on the gruelling challenge of the Antarctic Marathon where he hopes to raise €200,000 for Pieta House and Living Links Tipperary. 48

This panel discussion will be followed by two sessions;

In recent decades developments in technology have changed how we live our lives, impacting almost every aspect of modern living in a relatively short period of time. Use of technologies, such as the internet, Apps and social media are often blamed for an increase in mental health issues.

The first will look at the area of ‘Serious Gaming’ (games designed for a primary purpose other than pure entertainment) in the field of mental health. The second will ask the question: How can technology be used to challenge stigma and prejudice around mental health?

Yet, technology is also presented as key to the treatment of mental health issues, with an increase in internet-based delivered interventions.

Check online closer to the date for more information.

In this panel discussion with guest speakers from key areas, such as research; app development as well as mental health professionals, we will explore this dilemma and invite audience members to participate in the discussion. 49

This year's edition of Cistin will be hosted by comedian and veteran MC of AFOG mental health variety show, Eve Darcy. After being our resident Cistin host, Aidan Murphy returns to the stage but this time to delight us with his musical talents. His live show often includes piano, guitar and computer looping effects, so prepare for a musical treat!

We’re all hiding something, but Mel is different. Mel has someone to Hyde. Which would have been grand, if she wasn’t trying to seduce someone ELSE at the same time.

Joining the lineup is the 4 piece band Laura Ryder Ampersand with their ensuing music a mix of everything they get their ears on, taking influence from sources like alternative pop, folk, blues, and jazz.

Hyde & Seek is a heart-wincing physical comedy about falling in love and getting found out. A universal tale of awkward mating rituals, toxic friendships and the dark sides of self doubt.

Now in its seventh year, the First Fortnight Centre for Creative Therapies provides art-psychotherapy, drama therapy and music therapy for adults experiencing homelessness and mental ill health. The centre has recently explored the addition of drama therapy to the service, and hired a drama therapist on a short term contract as it continues to provide unique and innovative interventions in homeless mental health care. As the centre has expanded, we have seen continued engagement from service-users. Year on year, there has been a growing demand for this type of therapeutic intervention. With the current housing crisis, there is increasing need for these creative modalities of therapy to support individuals. The service is funded by the HSE Mental Health Division and supported by Crosscare Homeless Services. However, it relies on your donations, with money raised going towards expanding this crucial service, supporting some of the country’s most vulnerable individuals. 54

With just over a year to go until Galway hosts the European Capital of Culture in 2020, First Fortnight is delighted to team up with Galway 2020 on First Fortnight 2019 for an exciting programme of events.

This workshop is open to all regardless of dance or physical ability; its aim is to tear down every kind of barrier, to promote integration, cohesion and equality between the participants.

The city and county-wide programme will be a taste of what’s to come for 2020 and will seek to raise awareness and facilitate dialogue and debate around universal mental health issues.

The project provides the opportunity to share personal experiences and create a group narrative using Flamenco as its main instrument. Through artistic expression we can convey what impedes us, learning and enjoying Spanish rhythms and movement at the same time.

Frightened Rabbit Tribute Evening

Sat 19 Jan, 8pm Pepper Canister Church, Dublin 2 W

€12

'If you want to understand the world of humans around you, start with empathy!' This year we're delighted to partner with the famous Humans of Dublin. HOD is a project started by the Hungarian born Peter Varga. He uses photos to explore what it means to be Irish and captures the characters and idiosyncrasies of our capital city. With a goal to make people more attentive to what is happening to other humans around them and if possible make a positive change in their lives.

This January join us for a very special revisiting of Frightened Rabbit's critically acclaimed album, The Midnight Organ Fight, in the breathtaking surroundings of Dublin's Pepper Canister Church, featuring an all-star lineup of Irish acts, with all proceeds going to First Fortnight and the Scott Hutchison Foundation.

Join our social media channels to follow these stories as they unfold on the build up to and during the First Fortnight Europe Festival.

This show is part of Labyrinth MGMT’s Between The Bars concert series which is built around music, food and wine.
