Preface

This coursebook is developed to serve as a core material for the course titled English Communication in Digital Age (GE 02101), which is a required general education course for students of Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University. This coursebook follows the Communicative Language Teaching approach, and each of the six units is theme based. The four skills, grammar, and vocabulary are integrated in each unit focusing on different themes to maximize the learners’ opportunities to communicate in English, thus developing their communicative competency. The themes selected also reflect real life situations when English could be used as a medium of communication. Besides, the learners will update themselves on ongoing trends and current topics discussed throughout this book, as stated in its title.

It is hoped that those who are using this coursebook will improve English knowledge and skills, and therefore can communicate effectively outside classrooms. Lastly, the authors would like to thank Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University and the learners for encouragement and support until the material development was completed. Further feedback from teachers and learners who have used this coursebook is always needed and appreciated.

LANGUAGE FOCUS 1: Comparative Adjectives

1 Language Models

Adjectives are words that describe people and things. Adjectives are commonly used before nouns or after the verb ‘be’ and other linking verbs. If we compare people or things, we can use adjectives in comparative forms (adj. er or more + adj.). Comparative adjectives are often followed by ‘than’ if two things are mentioned directly in a sentence

1 Language Models

The present continuous (is/am/are + V ing), or the present progressive, is one of the most used verb tenses. We generally use this tense to talk about an event that is happening at the moment of speaking, or a longer event that is happening around the moment of speaking.

READING: The Rise of Vampire Shoppers

The Rise of Vampire Shoppers

(1) How do you feel about shopping? Some people do not want to spend the whole Saturday afternoon shopping at a mall anymore. Nowadays, more people prefer online shopping to in store shopping. Because of technology, shopping is now a 24 hour activity, and many people are becoming ‘vampire shoppers,’ who enjoy shopping late at night on their laptops or smartphones.

(2) The department store chain John Lewis has seen a rise in vampire shopping. John Lewis’s research showed that one in 15 purchases is made between midnight and 6 am, and the number of purchases in this period rose by 23% in 2018, compared with the previous year. Duvet covers are the most popular item which are bought on its website during these hours. The other items in the top five list include TVs, laptops, mobile phones, and freezers. According to the data, women accounted for 66% of purchases during the period, but surprisingly, their average spend was lower than that of men.

(3) The online fast fashion company I Saw It First has seen the rise in this shopping habit too. The company said that peak customer traffic starts at 9 pm and ends at about 1 am. During this period, customers aged 18 24 are the most active on the website, and dresses and tops are the most popular items.

(4) Why do more people like vampire shopping? The very simple reason is because they can. They are working more hours per week and also have to spend time for their children, household chores, and social lives, so bedtime is the only period when they have the time to go online to do their shopping, whether it is for essential or on impulse purchases. Sometimes a shopping journey begins in the daytime when people have looked at the items and saved them in the basket first, then they decide whether to buy them in the nighttime.

(5) While it has become a lifestyle for many people, there is also a dark side of vampire shopping. Shopping at night can be a problem for sleep deprived people. When they do not have enough sleep, their ability to control their impulse to spend is reduced. Negative moods can have a similar effect. When people are sad or lonely, they will buy things to make themselves happier at night. Both sleep deprivation and negative moods can cause overspending and regrets at buying later.

UNIT REVIEW

This unit helps us improve English communication skills used when buying and selling clothes or accessories and shopping for other things. Clothes vocabulary and some grammar topics (comparative adjectives and the present continuous) which are frequently used in these situations are introduced and practiced in this unit. Interesting facts about online shopping are also discussed through the reading text.

LISTENING

We have watched a video clip on YouTube and listened to people talking about what they consider when buying clothes. We have also practiced listening for specific details to answer questions given.

CONVERSATION

Some useful expressions used when buying and selling clothes at a shop have been introduced, and we have done a role play activity speaking as a shop assistant and a customer in a clothes shop.

LANGUAGE FOCUS 1 One grammar topic learned in this unit is comparative adjectives. Their forms of are adj. + er and more + adj. Their function is to compare two people or things. If two things are directly stated, the forms adj. + er and more + adj. are used together with the word ‘than’.

LANGUAGE FOCUS 2 Another grammar topic is the present continuous (is/am/are + V ing). The verb tense is used to describe events happening at the moment of speaking or around the moment of speaking.

READING

The text allows us to understand people’s online shopping behavior. We have also practiced skills of predicting, reading for gist, scanning, and reading for specific details through the text.

I woke at 4 am to a pitch black hostel room, my eight roommates all still sound asleep at the early hour. I snuck out on tiptoes to change, crammed a cheese roll in my mouth, and dragged the suitcase holding a year of my life to the Kaikoura dolphin watching tour office. The moment we dove off the water, I was shocked awake. For five seconds, I struggled to breathe through the cold. Then, the wetsuit flooded with water, and I was warm. A moment later, I was face to face with a wild dusky dolphin, one of the smallest species of dolphin in the world! Recognizing Adolescent Depression

Adolescent depression is increasing at an alarming rate. Recent surveys indicate that as many as one in five teens suffers from clinical depression. This is a serious problem that calls for prompt, appropriate treatment. Depression can take several forms, including bipolar disorder (formally called manic depression), which is a condition that alternates between periods of euphoria and depression.

Depression can be difficult to diagnose in teens because adults may expect teens to act moody. Also, adolescents do not always understand or express their feelings very well. They may not be aware of the symptoms of depression and may not seek help.

These symptoms may indicate depression, particularly when they last for more than two weeks:

• Poor performance in school

• Withdrawal from friends and activities

• Sadness and hopelessness

• Lack of enthusiasm, energy, or motivation

• Anger and rage

• Overreaction to criticism

• Feelings of being unable to satisfy ideals

• Poor self esteem or guilt

• Indecision, lack of concentration or forgetfulness

• Restlessness and agitation

• Changes in eating or sleeping patterns

• Substance abuse

• Problems with authority

• Suicidal thoughts or actions

A quick, easy, and confidential way to determine if you may be experiencing depression is to take a mental health screening. A screening is not a diagnosis, but a way of understanding if your symptoms are having enough of an impact that you should seek help from a doctor or other professional.

Teens may experiment with drugs or alcohol or become sexually promiscuous to avoid feelings of depression. Teens also may express their depression through hostile, aggressive, risk taking behavior. But such behaviors only lead to new problems, deeper levels of depression and destroyed relationships with friends, family, law enforcement or school officials.

1 Language Models

Sequence adverbs (or sequence markers) help the listeners follow the instructions we are giving. Normally, we use sequence adverbs with imperative clauses, and sequence adverbs always come before the verb. With imperative clauses, the subject is omitted.

Alternative foods take the next step

Some companies in Asia are already making headway in the fast growing alternative foods industry by exploring the potential offered by sustainable sources of protein, such as insects, seaweed and algae. Finding palatable protein sources that are more sustainable than traditionally farmed meat is a relatively simple affair. After all, people have been eating grubs and kelp for thousands of years, and plant based meat products have recently taken the food industry by storm.

There will be challenges in introducing some of these alternative proteins to a global market. For example, people in some countries might baulk at the idea of trying a grasshopper while having no issue with eating a prawn.

Asia Insect Farm Solutions, based in Singapore, promotes the use of grasshoppers in our diet. These insects require almost no water or land, emit a fraction of the greenhouse gas emissions that pigs or cows do, and contain about the same amount of protein as beef. The company freezes the grasshoppers and turns them into flour, which is used to make cookies, bread, nachos, pasta and more.

Seaweed is another high potential product. Asia has traditionally dominated this $8 billion market, to which European venture capitalists are now paying close attention The Seaweed for Europe Coalition has gathered entrepreneurs, scientists and investors to study seaweed's potential in Europe, and has an action plan in place to start raising awareness.

The alternative food industry is changing quickly, and in the right direction. Considering the progress made in only a few short years, it will be fascinating to see what new foods we'll be eating in a few decades.

1 Language Models

We use modal verbs (will, might, may, and could) and adverbs to show how sure we are about the future These modal verbs are called modals of predictions. For example:

1 Knowledge Sharing Do you know who the fortune teller is? Have you ever heard of fortune telling methods in the world? Share your experience with your classmates.

Fortune Telling in China

Some people are fond of fortune telling. Some take it seriously while others do it just for entertainment. One place in the world that has well known fortune telling methods is China. Chinese fortune telling has many types, many of them are similar to fortune telling in the Western countries. The four methods of Chinese fortune telling are ancient and famous ones.

1) Facial Fortune Telling >> Fortune tellers use your facial features, or Miànxiàng , to tell your fortune associated with your personality. It is also called physiognomy . Each facial feature tells different angle of your life fortune. For example, your ears show your longevity. Your eyes reveal your intelligence. Your cheeks indicate your confidence levels. Your mouth shows the way you express yourself. Your nose is associated with your financial situation and your power.

2) Palmistry >> Palmistry or Shǒuxiàngis using a hand palm to predict your destiny. A fortune teller will use the positioning of palm lines to analyze love, personality, work, financial status, and other traits of your future. Chinese palmistry is very similar to Western palmistry in technique. Both use the seven major lines found on palms to collect the most important information about one's future.

3) Horoscopy >> Chinese horoscopy is known as Bāzì , which uses your birth data to tell your future. This method is based on the four pillars of destiny (birth year, birth month, birth date and birth hour), and the relationship between the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water). Chinese horoscopy is more calendar based which refers to the solar system while the Western astrology is based on the planets and stars.

4) Fortune Sticks >> Another fortune telling method you're likely to come across at Taoist temples is fortune sticks or Qiúqiān . It employs a bundle of sticks with different Chinese characters or numbers inscribed on them (32, 60, or 100 sticks). You shake the cylinder until a stick drops out. Each letter on a stick is interpreted and written on paper or a booklet. This character and its meanings are then used to predict your future. You might need someone who knows Chinese to read the fortune for you. It has been a part of Chinese culture for very long time.

Whichever methods you like, do not rely too much on fortune telling. Just live your life well and keep doing good things and you will get good things back for sure!

The idea can be seen in our daily life such as through horoscopes or various fortune telling methods which normally tell our personality traits and predict our future. We learned English communication skills through these main ideas of the unit.

LANGUAGE FOCUS 2: Linking Idea: Coordinating Conjunctions

1 Language Models

The best way to remember the seven coordinating conjunctions is by using the acronym FANBOYS: For And Nor But Or Yet So

A coordinating conjunction is placed between words or phrases of equal grammatical value. You use coordinating conjunctions when you want to give the same amount of emphasis on two main clauses or want to compare two related ideas in one sentence.

Example of FANBOYS used in a sentence

For: Shows a reason or purpose. Using 'for' in this way can often be seen as quite formal, and so is usually replaced with the word 'because', 'since', or 'as'.

And: Connects two similar ideas.

Nor: Now can be interchanged with 'neither' and compares a negative, contrasting Idea. Essentially, it is the opposite of 'and'.

But: Compares to contrasting ideas or highlights an exception.

Or: Or highlights two choices.

Yet: Yet is used in a way to show an exception or a contrast to an idea.

Example: The money I earned is gone, for I have spent it all.

Example: I'm going to learn how to play the guitar and piano.

Example: I cannot go to work, nor the doctor's.

Example: I can go to the pool, but I won't swim.

Example: You can choose a blue jumper or a pink jumper.

Example: There are five cars, yet none of them are working.

So: So is used to show a reaction or consequence. Example: I ate a lot of cookies, so there are none left.

Tinder Swindler villain Simon Leviev claims he's 'not a Tinder swindler'

The subject of Netflix's shocking new documentary says it's a "made up movie."

Simon Leviev is speaking out in a new interview with Inside Edition, claiming that Tinder Swindler isn't a true story. "They present it as a documentary but in truth, it's like a completely made up movie," he says in the two part interview.

Leviev (born Shimon Hayut) is the subject of Netflix's two hour documentary accusing him of conning an estimated $10 million out of women he met through Tinder. Three of those women Cecilie Fjellhøy, Pernilla Sjöholm, and Ayleen Charlotte came forward in interviews, saying that he claimed to be the son of Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev and lied about his career and finances to gain their trust before conning them out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. In December 2019, he was sentenced to 15 months in prison after being convicted of fraud, theft, and forgery, but was released five months later on good behavior. Upon his release, Leviev returned to Tinder, but he was (finally) banned from the dating app this month after the airing of the Netflix doc.

However, Leviev is doubling down on his defense that he is not a serial con artist. "I'm not a Tinder swindler," he says while sitting next to "his model girlfriend" during the interview. "I was just a single guy that wanted to meet some girls on Tinder. I'm not this monster."
