Are You Salty?

I started my buffing days during my childhood at approximately 10 or 11 years of age. I would monitor my crystal scanner and when I heard a call that was in my neighborhood, I’d race to the address on my bicycle, many times beating the rigs to the scene. I remember the excitement I experienced watching the local heroes go to work. I’d stare at the firefighters with a smile as they emerged victorious from the taxpayer that was no longer on fire. I remember the smiles, the waves, and occasional comments I received from my heroes, who eventually got to know me. What I remember most was the soot covered and burned helmets and gear of the firefighters. To this day, I remember the dirty, sweaty faces of firefighters standing by their rigs as they lit up a cigarette and enjoyed a cup of coffee that was provided by the Salvation Army, who also responded to every working fire. Yes, I soon learned that my vision was a sign of greatness.

Later in life, I became a firefighter in my local community on Long Island. When I received my new gear and shiny helmet, I couldn’t wait to fight my first fire, so that my gear didn’t stand out like a sore spot amongst the other members of my company. It didn’t take long for my wife and kids to cover their noses as I walked into my home, wreaking of the smells from my childhood dream.

Several years ago, we realized that the toxins that firefighters were carrying home with them were carcinogenic. We realized that the toxic soot from the exhaust of our trucks, covered the walls of the firehouse and our gear.

We realized that dirty gear and helmets were putting us at risk for cancer. We also found out that SCBA should be worn during overhaul and until you exit the fire building.

As responders, we must have yearly training about hazardous materials and bloodborne pathogens. I took my first hazmat and blood-borne refresher course approximately 25 years ago. It didn’t take long for all of us to pay serious attention to the lessons learned when we operated at calls where blood and body fluids were present — calls like motor vehicle accidents. However, we still liked that burned, dirty and smelly look from fighting fires. Guess what? The old salty look is out of style because we now realize that the toxins we carry back to the firehouse and to our homes are making us sick.

In the 2018, the first issue, of the FDNY’s WNYF, there is a terrific article written by Deputy Chief Joseph M. Jardin addressing the national efforts on cancer issues in the fire service. Chief Jardin points out that the IAFF, the IAFC, the NFPA, the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation, the Firefighter Cancer

Support Network and the Illinois Fire Service Institute are concentrating on cancer in the fire service. He also discusses the proactive plan that the FDNY has put in place to reduce the risk of cancer.

I urge you to visit the websites of these groups to learn what you can do to reduce the risk of cancer. Your department should – or rather must – put a plan into effect that will change the mindset of the past. Remember “Clean is the New Salty!”

Don’t put yourself in the position of having to look back at possible mistakes you made that may have caused you to have cancer. ... Dennis

Suspicious Blaze in Homestead Borough

Around 0330 on July 26, 2018, fire crews were dispatched to a house fire in the area of Sarah Street in Homestead Borough. Police advised units there were two vacant homes fully involved along Joseph Street.

Fire crews arrived and set up a defensive attack and a second alarm was requested. Fire crews worked several hours before the fire was finally placed under control. The fire was deemed suspicious.

FF Burned in New Cumberland Duplex Fire On August 25, 2018, a call came in for a duplex structure fire on 3rd Street in New Cumberland. Heavy fire was reported and the call was quickly escalated to a second alarm. Firefighters became exhausted from the extremely high heat this fire was bringing on.

One firefighter was transported with second degree burns and others reported with minor injuries. Sadly the home was a total loss.

Tamaqua 3-Alarmer On July 14, 2018, firefighters from Schuylkill and Carbon Counties battled a three-alarm fire in a former church in Tamaqua on West Broad Street. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke showing and battled the fire throughout the night before gaining control in the early morning hours of July 15.

Silver Spring Building Destroyed

At 0404 on July 22, 2018, Box 33-103 sent Engine Companies 33 (New Kingstown), 31 (Silver Spring), 27 (Mechanicsburg Citizens) and 25 (Monroe Township); Truck 28 (Mechanicsburg Washington); Squads 31 (Silver Spring) and 33 (New Kingstown); Tankers 33 (New Kingstown), 31 (Silver Spring) and 25 (Monroe Township); RIT 23 (Upper Allen), and Air 45 (Carlisle) to North Locust Point Road for a fire at the Hempt Brothers building.

Command 33 reported a large building well involved. Companies took a defensive posture and a second alarm was requested, bring-

ing Engine Companies 41 (Carlisle Union) and 30 (Hampden Township); Truck 45 (Carlisle); Tankers 23 (Upper Allen), 41 (Carlisle Union) and 17 (West Enola). Squad 33 supplied Truck 28 for aerial operations and several handlines were used to knock down the fire. There were downed wires on side B, but no exposure concerns. The building was completely destroyed and companies remained on the scene for an extended period dousing hot spots and overhauling.

Pittsburgh 3-Alarmer

On August 12, 2018, Pittsburgh firefighters responded to a fire in a 2-1/2 story residence. Problems in an exposure building quickly escalated the call to a third alarm.

Saint Clair Mack Tower Still Truckin’

Five ladders were in service at a two-alarm fire in Pottsville, including this 1972 Mack/Baker 75-foot Tower Ladder. The rig is an ex-Pompton Falls Fire Company (Wayne, New Jersey) apparatus. Even after more than 40 years of service it is still running in front line service.

Decatur Twp. Basement Fire Multiple stations from Mifflin and Snyder Counties made a quick stop on a basement fire at a structure on Loht Road in Decatur Township on August 13, 2018.

Adams County Blaze Adams County Box 33-5 was struck on the early morning of July 7, 2018, for a building fire on Lobell Road in Berwick Township.

Units arrived to a well involved 35- x 75-foot maintenance facility building. United Hook and Ladder placed several handlines in service while establishing a water source on the rural roadway.

The fire was placed under control within an hour.

Berrysburg House Fire

On August 7, 2018, crews were called to a fire along Route 25 just west of Berrysburg. County advised the caller noticed smoke pushing from the rear of a single-story ranch. First-in crews found heavy smoke coming from the structure. Crews made entry and began an attack as multiple mutual aid companies arrived. EMS established a rehab tent across the street from the fire. Crews rotated to ensure each member stayed hydrated under high 80-/low 90-degree temps. During the event firefighters could be seen drinking a great deal of water as well as utilizing cold wet towels from the rehab tent.

The fire was believed to have started in the area of an electric stove.

2-Alarm Duplex Fire in Manor Township On August 6, 2018, Lancaster County Wide Communications dispatched crews for a dwelling fire at a duplex in Manor Township on the 100 block of Linger Street. The fire appeared to have started in the basement and worked its way up to the first and second floors, according to Duane Hagelgans, commissioner of Blue Rock Fire Rescue. At one point, 17 fire engines and trucks were assigned to the fire, partially due to the high ambient heat and humidity. Neighbors reported the duplex may have been struck by lightning, but officials had not verified the claim.

Spent Fireworks Sparks Dumpster Fire

Firefighters quickly extinguished an evening dumpster fire at the Lancaster Arms Apartments in Lancaster Township on Jennings Drive.

The contents of the dumpster ignited after a resident discarded spent fireworks into the dumpster.

McCandless Restaurant Fire On July 4, 2018, fire crews were dispatched to Bellisario’s Restaurant on Duncan Avenue in the Town of McCandless. Dispatch advised units they were receiving multiple calls for smoke coming from the building.

The Peebles fire chief arrived on-scene and confirmed the fire with heavy smoke showing and a second alarm was requested. Crews quickly went to work with an aggressive offensive attack knocking down the bulk of the fire. A third alarm was requested for manpower due to the ambient temperatures. Crews spent a few hours performing overhaul before returning into service.

Quick Stop in Allentown On July 27, 2018, Allentown firefighters were dispatched to a fire on North 6th Street in a large vacant apartment building. Crews responding were advised by the Allentown 911 Center that there were smoke and flames showing from their camera system.

Battalion Chief Jeff Hess assumed command and reported a fire on the porch with possible extension inside. Crews made a quick knock on the fire but remained for about 30 minutes overhauling the area.

Quick Work Saves House Area stations were alerted for a house fire on Back Maitland Road on July 6, 2018. Units arrived to find a fire on the second floor, but a quick attack saved the house.

Salisbury Township 2-Alarmer Firefighters from Salisbury Township were dispatched to a dwelling fire on July 13, 2018, on Essex Road in Salisbury Township. The Lehigh County 911 Center advised Chief Josh Wells of numerous calls reporting flames through the roof as well as a column of smoke. Chief Wells arrived at a two-story, single-family dwelling with heavy smoke and flames showing and ordered a second alarm. The first-in engine hit a hydrant in front of the building and stretched two lines, as Truck 31 arrived and put its ladder in operation. It took about 15 minutes to get the fire knocked down, but crews remained on scene hitting hot spots. Companies from Lower Macungie, Cetronia, Alburtis, Greenawalds, Woodlawn and Emmaus assisted with the fire.

West Tarentum Basement Fire

A basement fire in West Tarentum spread into the first division and up both sides of the house before being extinguished. Summit Hose, Eureka, Pioneer Hose, Highland Hose, Hilltop Hose, East Deer and Lower Burrell brought the fire under control in under 30 minutes.

West Mifflin Residential Fire On August 3, 2018, firefighters were dispatched to the 1900 block of Michigan Avenue in West Mifflin for a residential structure fire. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke pushing from the roof and attic area of a home. All residents were accounted for as crews went to work. The Duquense Annex assistant chief arrived and assumed command. A second alarm was requested for manpower due to the humid conditions.

Mt. Lebanon Kitchen Fire On July 10, 2018, Mt. Lebanon Fire was alerted for a residential kitchen fire. Firefighters encountered smoke and high heat in the structure.

Nice Stop in Highspire On September 1, 2018, Box 55-2 sent Company 55; Engine 59; Trucks 88 and 91; Rescues 40, 59 and 91-5; and Air 30 to Eshelman Street in Highspire for a structure fire. County Fire advised Chief 55 they received calls reporting the back of the house on fire. Police reported smoke showing. Engine 55 and Chief 55-2 arrived at the 2-1/2 story, occupied, duplex to smoke and fire showing from the rear. The first alarm assignment brought Engine 71, Truck 50, and Rescue 88 to the scene. Two lines were stretched into the fire building with a third into an exposure. The bulk of the fire was knocked down in about five minutes and the fire was placed under control in about 45 minutes.

Solar Panels Start Adams Co. Fire

Old Newberry Twp. Restaurant Burns On August 12, 2018, York County Box 31-04 sent Station 31 (Newberry Township); Engine 68-3 (Fairview Township); Tankers 26 (Strinestown), 27 (York Haven) and 28 (Gouldsboro); and Truck 89-2 (York Area United) to the vacant former-Bumper Bob’s Seafood House, a two-story restaurant, on Old Trail Road off of Lewisberry Road for a structure fire. Duty Officer 31 arrived shortly after dispatch and reported heavy smoke showing from the roof and fire on the second floor. Deputy 31 requested a second alarm, bringing Engines 28-1 and 28-2 (Gouldsboro); Engine 23 for RIT (Manchester); and Tanker 22 (Mount Wolf). Tanker 31 arrived and took a position on side B and was supplied by Engine 68-3 which set

up a portable pond. Three lines were stretched on the initial interior attack. Trucks 89-2 and 69 (York DLA) provided ventilation. An additional line was stretched from Rescue 68 (Fairview Township) from the C/D corner. The bulk of the fire on the second floor was knocked down in 15 minutes with extensive overhaul required. Cumberland County Engine 2-13, Air 13 (West Shore Bureau of Fire) and Tanker 24 (Lisburn) were special called to the scene.

Glassport 3-Alarmer a second alarm. Arriving units found a two-story, three-unit row house on Oak Way with heavy smoke showing. Command requested multiple rehab units respond to the scene due to high humidity and ambient temperatures in the mid-90s. Crews went to work but conditions worsened and command requested all units to evacuate the building. A third alarm was struck for manpower as crews rotated every 10 minutes. Firefighters continued to battle the blaze and protect exposures until the fire was finally placed under control after about two hours. The building was vacant at the time and was scheduled to be demolished soon. Two firefighters were transported On September 4, 2018, fire units were dispatched to a house on fire to the hospital and dozens more were treated on-scene for heat in the area of Monongahela Avenue and 8th Street in the borough of related illnesses. Man, Pets Saved in Millvale

On July 28, 2018, firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire located in the 400 block of North Avenue in Millvale Borough. The Millvale chief arrived and reported nothing showing from three sides of the structure. Once the Millvale chief entered to investigate, he reported fire on the second division.

Crews arrived and quickly attacked the fire, knocking down the bulk of it. As crews searched the building, three dogs and a rabbit were found and rescued.

Two of the dogs received medical treatment on-scene before being transported to a local vet. The owner of the animals was also transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

Commercial Fire in Plum Boro On August 26, 2018, crews from Logan’s Ferry Heights, Renton, Holiday Park, Lower Burrell, Sardis and New Kensington were called to a commercial structure fire at Penn Barrel in Plum Borough.

Silo Fire On September 14, 2018, calls were received for a reported silo fire just north of Elizabethville. Reliance Hose Company crews were notified that Carsonville Chief 19-1 and Fisherville Chief 216 advised of smoke showing. Reliance Chief Dill arrived on scene and notified crews that it was the location of a prior silo fire and requested Liberty Hose Company 2 and Lykens Truck 22.

Engine 21 arrived and stretched a line to the bottom of the silo.

Truck 22 went to work with its master stream. Command and crew noticed steam coming from the side of the silo and, after consulting with a specialist in ag events, crews cut open a section in the top cap of the silo. It was noted that this silo has been burning for some time but due to damages it was unable to be emptied. Also assisting were Tanker 21 and Berrysburg Fire Company 26.

Bristol Township MVA

4 Injured, Medevac Required at MVA

On July 18, 2018, the Herndon Fire Company responded to an MVA with injuries. Assistant Chief 63 reported two vehicles with heavy damage and entrapment with up to four patients. Air medical was requested as were additional rescue units. Crews freed three people from one car and the driver of a second vehicle; the latter was transported to a nearby LZ and flown to a medical facility by Geisinger Life Flight 5.

3 Injured in Car Versus Train Incident On July 4, 2018, Engine 16, Rescue 15, and EMS 12 responded to the village of Granville for a car-versus-train call. Units arrived to find one adult and two children injured in the incident.

SUV Flips in Lancaster Twp. Lancaster Township Fire Department was dispatched at 0537 on August 20, 2018, for an MVA in the 300 block of Abbeyville Road in Lancaster Township. A 911 caller stated one person was inside the car, not responding. Firefighters on arrival encountered a small SUV on its side straddling the curbing on Abbeyville Road. An uninjured female driver was extricated with the assistance of Manheim Township Police prior to the arrival of the fire department. Firefighters stabilized the vehicle and provided lighting and traffic control.

North Whitehall Double MVA

On August 16, 2018, firefighters from North Whitehall Township along with Northern Valley EMS responded to a two-vehicle MVA that was originally reported in the 5700 Block of Route 873. One vehicle was in the 5700 Block of Route 873 with a male driver trapped.

Personnel from the Neffs Fire Company were able to pop the door prior to the rescue truck arriving. While state police were investigating the incident, it was determined that the accident actually occurred

about two blocks further north on Route 873. The driver of a pickup truck towing a trailer was off the roadway and reported his vehicle was struck by the other car and the driver kept driving south on Route 873. EMS checked the second driver while Fire Police kept traffic flowing.

Lyken, Wiconisco Handle MVA On July 10, 2018, Lykens Fire-Liberty Hose Company 2 and Wiconisco Fire Company 23 responded to an MVA with one vehicle off the roadway into a tree and on fire. Crews arrive to find a sedan off the roadway with major damage and fully involved.

The two occupants were out and suffered minor injuries.

Extrication Demo in West Mifflin

On June 30, 2018, members from West Mifflin Station 293 Homeville, and Station 294 Duquense Annex participated in West Mifflin’s annual community day with a vehicle extrication demonstration.

Rigging Training in Lancaster Twp. The Lancaster Township Fire Department conducted ropes and rigging training on August 13, 2018. Firefighters learned to set up rigging for a Stoke’s basket which would be used with their ladder tower to perform a vertical rescue. Rescue pulley systems are becoming a popular feature at the tips of ladders and platforms to assist with rescue operations.

On July 8, 2018, Duncannon Fire Company 2 along with Marysville Fire Company 6 and New Buffalo Fire Company 9 conducted a live burn in Duncannon at an acquired home that will be replaced by a Dollar General store. The Pennsylvania State Fire Academy assisted with the event. Crews performed multiple evolutions into division 2 and division 1. After a short lunch break crews continued on division 1 evolutions before the home was burnt to the ground. Duncannon EMS and a Bressler Air Unit also assisted.

Aircraft Down Drill

On July 21, 2018, Fort Indian Town Gap and Upper Dauphin fire and EMS crews held an military-aircraft-down training scenario at an LZ established east of the town of Wiconisco. A National Guard CH47 Chinook twin-rotor transport helicopter from Fort Indian Town Gap Muir Airfield and its crew participated in the exercise. Arriving on scene, fire and EMS went to work on the crew who simulated injured personnel, carrying out procedures for the MCI-aircraft down. After the successful exercise, a debriefing session was held at the rear of the helicopter, bringing an end to a great day of training and information. Units participating included Engine 23, Tanker 23 and Attack 23 from Wiconisco; Engine 24 Williamstown; Engine 21, Rescue 21 and Utility 21 from Reliance Hose Company Elizabethville; and Engine 22 from Lykens Fire Liberty Hose Company 2.

Millvale Ross Flooding

Body Found, Difficult Removal in West Lampeter Township

Just before 0730 on July 5, 2018, slow moving thunderstorms hit the northern section of Allegheny County, dumping several inches of rain in less than an hour. Allegheny County 911 began receiving calls of flooded roadways in Aspinwall, which had been hit with major flooding 72 hours previously. Then calls began coming in from Ross Township and Millvale Borough of multiple roads flooding and cars trapped in the fast-rising waters. A mass transit bus began to take on water leaving 30 passengers stranded in Ross Township as swift-water rescue teams began to arrive. While the bus rescue was happening, Millvale advised County 911 that the creek which flows through town had broached its banks causing major flooding throughout the borough. Multiple swift-water rescue crews descended upon Millvale and Ross.

Lancaster Township Fire Department and Willow Street Fire Company were dispatched on August 3, 2018, for a person in cardiac arrest under the South Prince Bridge which spans the Conestoga River and connects Lancaster Township and West Lampeter Township. A 31-year-old homeless man was found dead under the bridge, where he had been living, according to Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni. Due to difficulty accessing the man, who was down a steep embankment and under the bridge, the incident was escalated to an environmental rescue. In pouring rain, Lancaster Township firefighters used their ladder tower by extending the boom out over the edge of bridge and lowering a Stoke’s basket to the shore of the river. Using a haul system and tag line connected to the bucket, the deceased man was lifted from the river bed to the bridge deck.

Train Derailment in Pittsburgh

On August 5, 2018, a freight train traveling through Pittsburgh derailed near Station Square in the busy South Side section of the city. Seven cars jumped the tracks, and fell over a hillside onto the city’s busy “T” mass transit tracks just prior to the Station Square station. No one was injured.

Crews shut down East Carson Street and the Smithfield Street Bridge until the derailment was cleaned up. The city’s “T” service to the South Hills area of Allegheny County was also suspended due to the derailment.

Willow Street’s Chief Michael Reese

Willow Street Fire Chief Michael Reese died unexpectedly at his Willow Street home August 23, 2018, after responding to an early morning vehicle accident. He was 53 A viewing was held on August 29, 2018, at the Willow Street Fire Station and the following day at the Willow Street Church of Christ.

Two arches with large American flags were formed in front and rear parking lot of the Willow Street Fire Company station by Lancaster Township Truck 66 and Lafayette Truck 63. In the rear parking lot Quarryville Truck 57 and Willow Street Truck 50 formed the arch.

Firefighters and friends stood in line over two hours to pay their respects and say goodbye to Chief Reese and express their condolences to his wife Susan and his brother, Willow Street Deputy Chief David Reese. Gordonville EMS Special Rehab Unit provided relief from the high 80s heat of the day by supplying cold water and a cooling tent for the attendees that were waiting in line.

Friends, family and fire personnel gathered for a funeral service at Willow Street Church of Christ. They then proceeded in fire, police and EMS vehicles to Willow Street Mennonite Church on East Penn Grant Road, passing the fire company on the way. Willow Street Engine 50-2 transported the flag-draped casket of Chief Reese and was driven by his brother. The cortege stopped in front of the Willow Street Fire Company and sounded its siren, then leading over 70 other pieces of fire apparatus in a procession to Willow Street Mennonite Cemetery. A Life Lion medical helicopter flew over the church and fire station.

“Chief Reese’s life was dedicated to helping others,” fire company president Bob Kiesel wrote in a statement announcing Reese’s passing.

“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support we have received from the emergency services community and our community at this most difficult time. Thank you,”

Chief Reese spent 39 years actively participating in the fire and emergency medical service. Starting his career at the Bausman Fire Company, then as a life member with Willow Street Fire Company and Ambulance, where he was currently serving as Fire Chief.

He was also a life member of Lampeter Fire Company and East Lampeter Township Ambulance Association and a member of Lancaster County Fireman’s Association.

During his career in emergency services, Chief Reese had worked for West End Ambulance Association, Lancaster General Hospital ER Department, and most recently for Lancaster County Wide Communications where he served as an Assistant Supervisor and a 911 Dispatcher.

Chief Reese was the husband of Susan M. Herman Reese. They had celebrated 28 years of marriage. Michael was born in Lancaster, PA, a son of the late Elmer P. and LoAnne Wallick Reese.

Chief Reese’s father, former Bausman Fire Chief Elmer Reese and life member of Lancaster Township Fire Department, passed away on February 25, 2018, celebrating 50-plus-years of service. He was 80 years old.

Greater Hanover Valor Awards

The Greater Hanover Fire and Rescue, York County Station 79, recently held their semi-annual awards night at which fire and EMS personnel were awarded for acts of bravery and CPR saves.

EMTs Casey Smith and Tony Pandoli were recognized for a CPR save of a patient in the Borough of Hanover earlier in the year. Chief Anthony Clousher and EMS Chief Michael Smith presented their awards to them.

Greater Hanover Fire and Rescue Firefighter Joseph ‘Bam-Bam’ Wysocki was awarded for his actions at a house fire in March 2018. While off duty and at a local super market with his family, Firefighter Wysocki

heard a loud explosion. Jumping into action he ran towards the sound of the explosion and found a house had exploded and was fully involved with persons trapped. Wysocki quickly located a person and helped him to safety and administered care until EMS arrived. He then stayed and assisted his brothers with fighting the fire. Duquense Annex FD’s Stephen A. Horvath, Jr.

On August 28, 2018, Firefighter and Life Member Stephen A. ‘Junior’ Horvath, Jr., of Duquense Annex Fire Department, West Mifflin Station 294, passed away after suffering sudden cardiac arrest a days earlier. He was 70-years old. Steve was an active member for 48 years having served as Assistant Chief.

Junior was a proud Vietnam War veteran having served in the US Army. Beloved husband of 45 years to Nancy (Hathaway) Horvath; brother of Jeanette (Donald) Liskay of Moon Township, he was predeceased by sister and brothers, Mary Ann, Robert ‘Fuzz’ and Christian Horvath; uncle of Ian (Alyssa) Liskay and Zac Liskay; great-uncle of Paige Liskay. Survived by his aunts, Dorothy Illes and Clara Gougler; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Obituary

Braddock FD’s Thomas Petrovic

On July 3, 2018, Thomas ‘TJ’ Petrovic, Fire Chief and Charter Member of Braddock Volunteer Fire Department 2 Station 113, passed away unexpectedly.

Chief Petrovic was 63-years old.

Chief Petrovic was a member of the Braddock Fire Department since its incorporation in 1972 and served the community for 46 years. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 31 years Marlene (Stafiej) Petrovic, his constant companion Casey “the fire dog,” his loving mother Alice Petrovic, his cherished brother Paul (Kimberly) Petrovic, his sister-in-law Denise (Phillip) Lucarelli, his brother-inlaw Tom (Joyce) Stafiej, his niece Haley Petrovic, and seven nieces and nephews.

TJ is also survived by great nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his beloved father William Petrovic and cherished brother Robert ‘Tank’ Petrovic.

He will be missed by his family, the members of his department and the entire community.

Greater Hanover’s Kaiser Honored for Save

Greater Hanover Fire and Rescue career Firefighter Steve Kaiser was recently honored for his actions at a June 2018 house fire in the Borough of Hanover. Firefighter Kaiser, assigned to Truck 79, arrived at a house fire on Broadway with reports of people trapped.

Kaiser’s quick actions getting a ground ladder in place resulted in him pulling a trapped occupant from a second-floor balcony. Kaiser is a 10-year veteran of the Greater Hanover Fire and Rescue.

On August 11, 2018, firefighters responded to a three-alarm fire in Green Tree at the First Commonwealth Bank on Mansfield Avenue. The call came in as a vehicle fire and was quickly upgraded to a second alarm, and then a third, when the vehicle fire at the drivethrough extended into the structure and then to the roof.

EDITORIAL CHANGES PREPARE FIREHOUSE FOR THE FUTURE

Firehouse is pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Matthews to conference director and acting editor-in-chief of Firehouse, and the promotion of Janelle Foskett to editorial director of Firehouse Magazine and Firehouse.com.

“The positive response to these moves, both internally at Firehouse, and among our many speakers, contributors and instructors, has been incredible,” said Greg Toritto, vice president/group publisher, public safety, Endeavor Business Media. “Both Peter and Janelle possess the necessary tools and leadership skills to ensure Firehouse’s continued growth and success, and to accomplish its mission to best serve our audience, customers, and partners. The fire service has always been about teamwork, and we are excited to name two true team players to these important Firehouse posts.”

Matthews started with Firehouse in 1999 and has served in multiple leadership and management roles throughout his career, making him truly ‘homegrown’ to the Firehouse brand. He has served as the executive editor and editor-in-chief of Firehouse.com, leading a team responsible for Firehouse’s 365-day-a-year digital operation providing news and education to the fire service community. Matthews has also been responsible for Firehouse’s events portfolio, supporting conference development, association partnerships and working with exhibitors to help them with their product and public relations efforts. In addition to his roles at Firehouse, Matthews has worked as a photo editor and photographer at the New York Post.

Matthews was introduced to the fire service by his father, a 59year volunteer firefighter. He volunteered with fire departments in New York and Maryland, holding the rank of lieutenant, and served as photographer for the St. Paul (MN) Fire Department.

Foskett joined the Firehouse team as executive editor in 2015, running the print operations for Firehouse Magazine, including special projects and custom supplements, and working closely with the web team and conference group to build the Firehouse brand. Prior to joining the Firehouse team, Foskett worked in fire service publishing for nearly a decade, managing the print and web operations at FireRescue magazine. She has nearly 20 years of experience in publishing and communications, and has worked as a reporter, writer, communications and social media specialist, and editor.

Matthews and Foskett have been responsible for the day-to-day editorial operations of Firehouse’s publishing franchise for several years. They will continue to lead a team that truly understands that its responsibility to serve our readers, the industry, and our contributors, is first and foremost.

Matthews and Foskett will assume their new roles immediately. Timothy E. Sendelbach, who had served as Firehouse’s editor-in-chief and conference director, has resigned. Firehouse would like to thank Tim for his contributions as a member of the Firehouse team, and wish him luck in his future endeavors.

In addition to the leadership changes above, Firehouse has also announced the following appointments and promotions: Steven Shaw has been promoted to senior editor, Firehouse.

Steven will take on an expanded role focused on magazine production and special projects.

John Kosik has been named senior editor, Firehouse. In addition to his prior responsibilities as an associate editor, John will oversee the day-to-day operations for Firehouse.com.

Associate editor Ed Ballam’s role will expand to include additional digital and print assignments, as well as special projects.
