Limit Your Chances of Cancer Firefighters have always been proud of their toasted and dirty helmet. This holds true today, too. Years ago, I remember when my father was promoted to lieutenant in the FDNY and proudly placed his burnt and soot covered helmet shield from Engine 233 in the shadow box of our living room. He was proud of his first shield until mom, who didn't know better, took a steel wool pad and cleaned the shield, restoring it to a pristine condition. Yes, dad was quite mad when he came home from work and the bright numbers on the shield drew his attention. Let me ask our seasoned veteran firefighters — would you be mad if this happened to you?

It is no secret that I have cancer. Did it come from my 20-plus years in the fire service? If it did, I would be upset if I could have prevented a disease that has changed my life. Yes, I too was one of those firefighters who took pride in my dirty helmet and turnout coat.

If you stay current and read about the causes of cancer, you will find articles that link what we do on a daily basis to various strains of the disease. Recently, there has been concern that our hoods, ear flaps, coat wristlets, and turnout coats could be a link to cancer. Do a search for “firefighters hoods - cancer” you will be shocked on how many articles that come up on the subject.

Honeywell First Responder Products have a great article on their website about this. The IAFF has another article written by NIOSH linking cancer to our gear.

What should you and your department do? Look to organizations like the Firefighter Cancer Support Network. They have suggestions that might help you prevent the dreaded disease of cancer. The types of cancer we are getting are way too many to mention in this editorial. The suspected causes of cancer are many and you, the firefighter, are susceptible to them all. This is no joke and it is not a ‘maybe’ issue. Cancer is reaching our firefighters through what we do and it can be limited by keeping your PPE clean.

As you read through Fire News, pay particular attention to our advertisements. A few of our advertisers are offering programs to help keep your gear in a condition that will protect you during a fire and after the fire. If your department does not have a program in place to keep your gear clean, it is time to put one in place.

I am sure many of you are proud of your ‘salty’ gear. It is time to change that attitude to one where you are proud that you survived your career without getting cancer.

Reading Blaze Spreads to Exposures

On May 5, 2015, Reading firefighters responded to Laurel Street for and displacing around 20 residents. Multiple volunteer and outside a reported house fire. Responding crews reported visible fire before departments assisted the city units.

Philadelphia 4-Alarm Displaces 100 In March 2015, a four-alarm fire consumed an apartment building on the 9100 block of Academy Road in Philadelphia. The fire, fanned by high winds, displaced about 100 people. The fire quickly escalated to four alarms and took several hours to bring under control. The Philadelphia Fire Department was assisted by many city agencies.

House Fire in South Hanover

On March 29, 2015, Dauphin County Box 47-8 sent companies to the 400 block of Pleasantview Road in South Hanover Township for a house fire. A first-alarm assignment with two additional were requested. Truck 46 (Hummelstown) arrived to heavy fire showing from the rear of a one-story, ranch style, dwelling and stretched a

handline to the B/C corner. The bulk of the fire was knocked down in about 10 minutes with extension to the common loft. Companies were evacuated due to an unstable structure. Truck companies opened up the roof, and handlines in the rear mopped up the remaining fire.

Porch Fire Consumes Wilkinsburg Home

On April 19, 2015, City of Pittsburgh firefighters were dispatched to the Borough of Wilkinsburg, for a couch on fire in the rear of a house located on Hazel Way near Marlboro Avenue. Units arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the home and a working fire in the rear, extending into the structure. Command advised units to

protect the exposures and requested a second alarm. Firefighters aggressively attacked the fire and had the fire under control in just over 30 minutes. Four people and five dogs were inside the home, but all made it out safely. The home was a total loss.

2-Alarmer in Conestoga Twp.

On February 16, 2015, a two-alarm fire tore through Patricia’s Antiques and Collectibles, on Main Street in Conestoga Township.

Heavy fire was reported extending from the first floor to the second and an evacuation tone was sent out ordering all firefighters inside the structure to leave. Salt trucks were called to the scene to deal with ice formed by water run-off, as temperatures dropped to about

12 degrees in the evening. The fire started when a heat gun was left unattended for “several minutes,” said Conestoga Fire Company assistant chief Paul Thomas. The heat gun was being used to thaw a frozen pipe. Apparatus from 13 different companies responded to the scene, including 10 water tankers, along with two medical units.

Silo Collapse, Fatality in Bristol

In January 2015 a silo collapsed at the Silvi concrete plant in Bristol Township. It was filled with dry concrete mix and a man was buried by the collapse. Companies went in service for 86 hours to recover the body. Nowhere in the United States has anything like this ever happened.

Special cranes were brought in for stabilization and vacuums were brought in to remove the powder. In March, first responders were recognized by the township council for their efforts.

25 Displaced in 3- Alarmer

On April 10, 2015, Box 4-03 dispatched companies to W. Burd two-story mixed occupancy. Numerous masterstreams from Street at McCune Lumber for a commercial building fire. Cumberland and Franklin Counties operated as the fire went to a Responding companies reported a smoke column en route. Heavy third alarm. Twenty-five residents were displaced.

House Fire in Steelton

On March 29, 2015, Box 501 sent companies to S. 3rd Street in the Borough of Steelton for a structure fire. Engine 50 (Steelton) arrived on location to smoke showing from an occupied, three-story, end-of-the-row dwelling. Tower 1 (Harrisburg) arrived and nosed in to Engine 50 on side A. Command 50 requested the first-alarm assignment, shortly followed by a second alarm. First arriving crews stretched a line into the front door and performed a primary search. The fire building was a row of four, three-story, wood frame dwellings that were built on a hillside with limited rear access.

A basement fire quickly travelled to the upper floors and forced interior crews to evacuate. Companies went in service with 2-1/2 inch lines and the deck gun from Engine 50 as heavy smoke blanketed the scene. The fire extended to the exposure on the D side.

The remaining homes suffered smoke damage. The rear of the fire building collapsed and exterior operations continued on the fire building and exposure. The fire was placed under control in about two hours. Seven adults and four children were left homeless.

Good Save at Swatara Motel 3-Alarmer On January 10, 2015, Swatara Township and other area fire companies were sent to the Econo Lodge on Eisenhower Boulevard for a heater on fire. The first arriving officer from Company 49 (Swatara Township) requested a second alarm for manpower to assist with evacuation. Reports of entrapment were reported on the A/B corner of the building. Crews quickly set up a ground ladder and rescued two occupants from the second floor. Multiple lines were stretched as companies operated in an offensive mode as heavy

smoke billowed from the two-story hotel with a common loft. As conditions deteriorated, all units were evacuated and a PAR check performed. A third alarm was struck and incoming units were ordered to stage. Members quickly re-grouped and operated handlines, pulled ceilings, and truck companies opened the roof contributing to a good knock on the fire preventing more significant damage.

Arson in Homestead 7-Alarmer

Allegheny County Emergency Services dispatched units to a residential structure fire with possible entrapment on January 23, 2015, on the 200 block of East Eighth Avenue in Homestead Borough. Units arrived to a three-story commercial structure with two victims trapped on the upper floors. A second alarm was requested and firefighters made a quick rescue. Both victims were transported to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. The fire spread to two additional exposures on the bravo and delta sides and additional alarms were added. The fire then traveled to exposures

on the delta side. Fire crews were forced to evacuate the structures due to the possiblility of collapse; one structure did collapse. Over 22 departments responded to the fire, which grew to seven alarms, and many more were called for coverage. Allegheny County and ATF investigators arrested a 27-year-old man who was charged with multiple counts of arson, aggravated assault and risking or causing a catastrophe. The fire destroyed five businesses and nine apartments in an historic district.

Fire Damages Fire Consumes School in Abandoned 4 Unit Shaler Township Duplex in Clairton

Around 0845 on Sunday April 4, 2015, firefighters were dispatched to a report of smoke coming from the roof of a school located on Scott Avenue in Shaler Township. Firefighters arrived on-scene to find a 1 story school with smoke showing from the structure. The fire was mostly contained to a mechanical room and the roof area but smoke did fill the school. A second alarm was requested for additional manpower as firefighters had a tough time extinguishing the fire in the roof. No one was inside the building when the fire occurred and no injures were reported.

On April 9, 2015 at 1130, firefighters were dispatched to a working structure fire in an abandoned four unit duplex and single family home in the City of Clairton. The Clairton Fire Chief decided to let the structures burn, protecting the tree line behind the home as the homes were all on the city's demolition list. Lincoln Way was once a thriving neighborhood but is now a street full of abandon homes. The street is full of mystery and has a bit of paranormal history. Rumors about the abandonments and hauntings has led to numerous paranormal investigations among the homes located along the street. At one time, there were about 40 homes along the street but now only about 10 remain. Most of the homes have either crumbled away or have burned down in the past.

Duplex Blaze in Hanover

On February 18, 2015, York County Box 46-06 was struck for a house fire with people trapped at a Carlisle Street address in Hanover Borough. A Hanover volunteer firefighter and Hanover Borough police officer arrived first, and began forcing entry to search for occupants. Truck 46 under the command of Captain 46-B arrived to smoke showing from the rear of the two-story duplex. Engine 46-3 arrived from the Clearview Station and stretched handlines to the rear of the building. Engine 49-1 assisted interior operations and picked up the line from E46-3. Firefighters found a small fire visible near the second-story window, extending up and in the walls. After forcing entry, the engine crew found their way to the second floor and reported a small fire on the wall with extension. The building was laddered with ground ladders. The family was assisted down the block to McDonald’s and awaited the Red Cross.

Frigid Fire in Hanover On February 21, 2015, with the ambient temperature hovering around zero and the ‘real feel’ temperature about -15 degrees, the York County 911 Center dispatched Box 49-02 for a garage fire on Arwco Drive in Penn Township, Hanover. Career and volunteer firefighters from the Hanover Fire Department (HFD) and Penn Township Department of Fire-Rescue (PTFDR) responded, as did RIT units from Pleasant Hill and United Hook and Ladder. Chief 49 arrived and assumed incident command. Engine 46-1, under the command of Captain 46-C from Hanover (Wirt Park Station), was the first-in engine with heavy fire showing from the attached garage of a two-story, single family dwelling with all occupants out. A family car and Harley Davidson motorcycle were destroyed in the fire. Firefighters were covered in frozen foam as it flew around freely in the windy conditions.

Fire Tears Through 3 Philadelphia Row Houses On January 2, 2015, the Philadelphia Fire Department responded to South 68th Street, near Woodland Avenue for a reported building fire. First arriving Engine 40 reported a heavy fire in three row dwellings. Firefighters encountered several victims, including a 70-year-old male who suffered burns and a broken leg after he jumped from the second floor. A woman in her 30s also jumped from the second floor and needed to be transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. A third victim was transported from the scene with unknown injuries. Several medic units were called to the scene due to the number of victims. The American Red Cross assisted 28 victims with shelter and clothing.

Companies remained on-scene for an extended amount of time overhauling and checking for extension.

Bad Day for Birds in Bensalem A fire ripped through Bird’s Tattoo shop in Bensalem on February 7, 2015. The fire was in a two-story commercial building that was an end-ofthe-row structure. The fire started in the rear of the building and spread, consuming the building and destroying the entire business. BIRD’S was famous for having several parrots and turtles. Some of the turtles survived. The parrots did not.

Churchill Battles Stubborn House Fire

On January 6, 2015, Allegheny County 911 received calls for a reported structure fire on Kingsdale Road in Churchill, an eastern suburb of Pittsburgh. Responding fire units found a single-story residential dwelling with heavy fire and smoke. Firefighters were forced to evacuate the structure due to frozen fire hydrants and requested a second alarm. One firefighter was treated for shortness of breath and transported to a local hospital where he was later released. Over 10 companies, including a rehab unit from Murrysville, battled for several hours in frigid and icy conditions.

The home was a total loss.

Harrisburg City Blaze

On April 21, 2015, Box 1-4 sounded for a reported structure fire in the 400 block of S. 14th Street in Harrisburg City. Squad 8 arrived to heavy fire on the second floor of a 2-1/2 story, frame duplex.

Firefighters stretched lines into the fire building and exposure. The fire extended to the top floor before the bulk of the fire was knocked down. The interior steps from the second to third floor collapsed and command had all members evacuate the building.

Extensive overhaul was required to extinguish the hot spots in the void spaces.

Smoke Triggers AFA at Lancaster K of C

On March 15, 2015, firefighters responded to an automatic fire quet hall, where a burnt heater motor triggered their AFA. The alarm at the Knights of Columbus on New Danville Pike. A smoke smoke was vented by the crew from Truck 66.

Access Problems in Adams Co. Fire

On January 2, 2015, Adams County Box 33-14 was struck for the house fire with possible entrapment on Green Springs Road. Ambulance 33-A, returning from a previous call, arrived on scene first and advised of a fully involved house fire. Chief 33 called for Brush 33 and Tanker 33 to respond due to a long narrow road leading to the site. Brush 33 arrived, and deployed a “trash line� to the working fire, which was actually a mobile home with an addition and basement. Water supply was difficult with only Tanker 33 and Tanker 9 able to get up the roadway. The entrapment proved negative. The home was a major loss due, and a majority of the addition suffered severe smoke damage. One occupant was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Warehouse Fire On March 2, 2015, Box 1-1 sent Squad 8 and Tower 1 to the 200 block of S. Cameron Street for a smoke investigation. While units were en route, the box was upgraded to a building fire at the rear of the address. Squad 8 arrived on location to heavy fire showing from a vacant, 100 x 200-foot warehouse. Captain 2 requested a first alarm followed by a second, bringing county mutual aid to the scene. Companies led off with big lines and aerial streams to bring the fire under control and prevent extension into an attached exposure. This was the second fire in a week in this complex of vacant buildings frequented by vagrants.

2 Injured at Mountville Apt. Bldg. Fire Firefighters had to rescue a resident from a second-story balcony while fighting an early morning fire on April 12, 2015, at a Mountville apartment building. Firefighters used a ladder to get the resident off the balcony at the building on E. Main Street, said Mountville Fire Chief Dean Gantz. Two residents of the building were taken to the hospital, where they were treated and released. Also, some of the firefighters’ feet slipped through a hole in the floor of the second floor apartment, but they were able to catch themselves and did not go through.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the secondfloor apartment where it started.

Pittsburgh Engine Spots House Fire On April 19, 2015, a City of Pittsburgh engine was returning from a call when they spotted a home on fire located at the intersection of Wilhelm Street and Parnassus Way. A full first-alarm structure assignment was dispatched. Arriving units found heavy fire throughout the 1-½ story vacant home.

Command advised that no firefighters were to enter the structure and a defensive attack would be established using master streams. The fire was placed under control in about 45 minutes.

Fire companies from Bensalem, Bristol and Middletown responded to a townhouse fire that happened during the first half of the Super Bowl on February 1, 2015. The blaze, on Sawyer Court, consumed one dwelling and seriously damaged at least two exposures. Several families were left homeless.

100 Cattle Perish in Manor Twp. Barn Fire

1 FF Injured in Steelton 2-Alarmer

According to Blue Rock Fire and Rescue Fire Commissioner Duane Hagelgans, on January 9, 2015, about 120 out of 150 steers housed in an 80 x 100-foot barn in Manor Township died in a fire that totally destroyed the structure located on Indian Run Road.

Also lost was a small barn nearby, although several other structures were saved, some containing fuel oil and pesticides. The silos were also saved. An attempt to thaw frozen pipes, and a lack of water caused the blaze. Incoming fire units reported smoke visible three miles away. Units from about 17 fire companies responded to the call. The total included at least 10 tankers and 10 engines, plus other apparatus.

February 22, 2015, firefighters responded to Pine Street in the Borough of Steelton for a fire. Engine 50 (Steelton) arrived to find a three-story, occupied, frame duplex with fire on the second floor, porch and attached exposure. Companies evacuated the building and an aerial stream from Tower 1 (Harrisburg) and deck guns from E50 and E49 knocked down the bulk of the fire. Engine 50 from Steelton, and units from Bressler, Lower Swatara, Highspire, Progress, Chambers Hill, Harrisburg, and rescues from Steelton, Paxtang, Middletown, Lower Swatara and Air 30 from Penbrook responded on the second alarm. Harrisburg Captain 2 (Wise) and Chief 1 (Enterline) had command. One firefighter was transported with unknown injury.

Church Fire in Allison Hill

4-Story Fire in Steelton

On March 5, 2015, Box 1-2 summoned city companies to the 1600 block of Market Street in the Allison Hill neighborhood for a structure fire. Once on location, crews found heavy fire showing from a large church at 16th and Park Streets. Command requested a firstalarm assignment shortly followed by a second. Firefighters initiated an interior attack with several lines and were successful in knocking down the bulk of the fire and preventing extension to the main sanctuary of the church. Extensive overhaul was required to chase down hot spots before the fire was placed under control.

No injuries were reported and the fire was deemed accidental in nature.

Recently, Dauphin County Box 501 sounded for a structure fire in a four-story, occupied apartment building over a bar built in the 1800s on North Front and Conestoga Streets in the Borough of Steelton. Engine 50 (Steelton) arrived to heavy fire from a third floor with extension. Engine 49 (Swatara Township) arrived and used their deckgun on side A/D. Wagon 4 (Harrisburg) arrived and secured a second water source supplying Tower 1 (Harrisburg). A second alarm assignment was requested. Evacuation tones sounded with fire extending to upper floor.

Straban House Fire

On March 24, 2015, Adams County Box 1-8 was struck for the house fire on Flickinger Road in Straban Township. Adams 911 advised Chief 1 (Shank) they were receiving multiple calls.

Gettysburg’s Engine 1-2 arrived to a fully involved attached garage with extension to a two-story single family home. A Blitz Fire was placed into service on the garage as Engine 1-2’s crew made entry to side A. The fire extended to the first and second floors as well as the basement. Several cats perished in the fire, but there were no injuries reported. Assisting departments included: Gettysburg, United, Littlestown, Bonneauville and Biglerville.

Firefighters in Abington, Montgomery County, made a quick stop of a dryer fire that had some extension into the walls of a house in Abington in January 2015.

On April 15, 2015, West Shore fire companies were dispatched to 4th Street and Herman Avenue in Lemoyne for a house fire. Squad 13 (West Shore Bureau of Fire) arrived to heavy fire on the second floor rear of a 2-1/2 story occupied dwelling. Crews stretched a line up the rear stairs to make a knock down of the fire, which extended to the attic. Aggressive work resulted in the bulk of the fire being knocked down in 10 minutes with extensive overhaul.

Recently, Cumberland County toned Box 20-13 for a reported house fire on Woodmyre Drive near Valley Road. Units arrived to heavy fire from a two-story, occupied, attached townhome. Veterans Highway MVA

On March 25, 2015, Third District, Newportville and Bristol Fire companies responded to a crash on Veterans Highway involving a passenger car that turned in front of a tow truck. The woman in the car was trapped in her vehicle for almost 20 minutes. Companies removed the dash and roof. The drivers of the car and tow truck sustained injuries and were removed to the hospital.

Snowstorm Triggers Multi-Accidents in Lancaster Twp. A fast-moving snowstorm dropped only an inch of snow in Lancaster County on January 21, 2015, but caused a number of problems for motorists, resulting in dozens of accidents on Lancaster County roads.

Thirty-six accidents, most involving no injuries, were reported by Lancaster County-Wide Communications. In one of the more serious incidents, at least two people were hospitalized after a three-vehicle crash at New Danville Pike and Second Lock Road in Lancaster Township. Lancaster Township Fire Department responded. One driver was changing a tire, a friend was behind him in another car, when a third car hit them.

Did Ya’ Hear About the 2 Men In Pickup Who …

2 Trapped in East Cocalico MVA

On the evening of February 24, 2015, John Clark was watching TV, when he heard a loud crash outside his window. Clark peered out his window and found a pickup truck straddling the retaining walls of his below grade driveway. The front of the truck impaled the left side of the wall while the rear tires were stuck on the right side wall. The accident occurred in the 300 block of South President Avenue. For an undetermined reason, the vehicle left the roadway, narrowly missing a fire hydrant, traveled approximately 100 feet and crossed two other front yards, before hitting the retaining walls. Two men were extricated from the truck in 20 minutes.

Interstate 95 Fatality

Bensalem and Bristol Township firefighters worked at an extrication scene of a fatal multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 95 in January 2015. One man was killed and dozens of others hurt in a crash involving two tractor trailers and four passenger cars. The crash took place on the interstate just north of Woodhaven Road.

Abbottstown Pike MVA

On January 18, 2015, York County Box 49-06 was dispatched for a auto accident involving rollover and entrapment on the Abbottstown Pike. Units arrived to find a Jeep on it side with the occupants self extricated and a passenger car with a utility trailer on top of it with confinement of the occupants. United Hook And Ladder engine 33-2 immediately went to work stabilizing the vehicles and using hydraulic tools to do door pops on the car while beginning patient care. Engines 46-1, Rescue 46-3 and Rescue 46 responded on the crash and Engine 46-1 assumed command. Penn Township Police were investigating and fire police from Penn and United had traffic control. PennDOT also responded with a truck for ice control.

Annual Spring Burn at LCFA Fire School

Lancaster Township Fire Department held its annual Spring Burn Sunday on April 12, 2015, at the Lancaster County Firemen’s Association class A structural firefighting burn facility on Pequea Lane in West Lampeter Township. Drills were executed with everyone having the opportunity to perform each operation. Training covered all aspects of the fire scene including engine and truck company operations, RIT, search and rescue, and overhaul. It was an excellent opportunity for both seasoned and less experienced firefighters to enhance their firefighting skills.

Lancaster Township FD Annual Appreciation Banquet

The Lancaster Township Fire Department held its annual appreciation banquet November 1, 2014, to recognize members who displayed outstanding service throughout the year.

Past-Chief Elmer Reese was presented an award for his 50 years of volunteer service with Lancaster Township. Reese accepted his award flanked by his two sons, Michael and David Reese. Both sons are fire officers of the Willow Street Fire Company. Michael serves as Chief and David Reese as the Deputy Fire Chief.

Units Citations were presented to: the crew of Lancaster Township’s Truck 66 for rescuing seven residents during an apartment building fire; Chief Ron Comfort, Jr.; and Firefighters Chris Mosso; Irene Fitzkee; Mark Smith, Percy Wise, Nick Falstick, and J Hatfield.

A Unit Citation was awarded to the crew of Squad 66-1 for a cardiac arrest rescue. Unit Citations were presented to Assistant Chief Brett Fassnacht, Lieutenant Thomas Royer and Firefighter Alex Royer.

Rookie Firefighter of the Year were presented to Morgan Haines and Jason Snyder for their high level of participation and interest in becom-

ing a senior Lancaster Township firefighter.

The Lieutenant Keith Rankin Training Award was presented to Firefighter Kenton Miller. This award is given to the person who has dedicated themselves to the Lancaster Township Fire Department in all aspects of training. Rankin died in the line of duty September 25, 2011, during a live burn drill at Lancaster County Firemen’The s Association Pequea Lane Fire School.

The Fire Police of the Year Award was presented to Lieutenant Ed Slaymaker and Corporal John Jones.

The Fire Chief’s award was presented to Jennifer Roop-Miller. This award is presented to a member who assists the chief throughout the year.

The Fire Officer of the Year Award was presented to Fire Chief Ron Comfort, Jr. This award is chosen by the membership to recognize service by a line officer.

Memorial

Kathryn M. Hippensteel

December 18, 2015, will mark the 30th anniversary of the tragic accident that claimed the life of Kathryn Murren Hippensteel.

Hippenesteel was a volunteer firefighter riding the tailboard of a engine when it overturned en route to a three-alarm fire in Abbotttstown, placing her in York Hospital where she died of

injuries 13 days later. She was the first firefighter to die in the line of duty in Adams County and the first female to die in the line of duty in Pennsylvania. A memorial now hangs in the Adams County 911 Emergency Operations Center in Gettysburg.

Obituary John Doster, Oldest Active Fireman in US Killed in Line of Duty

John Doster, the oldest active fireman in the United States, died in the line of duty during a two-alarm fire in Hulmeville Borough.

Doster was directing traffic on February 25, 2015, when he felt ill and left the fire scene. He went to the hospital, where he was admitted and passed away on April 2, 2015. Doster served 82 years with

the Edgely Fire Company in Bristol Township. Recently, he was Captain of the Fire Police. His funeral was held at the firehouse and was well attended. John Doster was 96 years old at the time of his death.

Obituary Christi Rodgers, 26, LODD

A Robert Fulton Fire Company volunteer firefighter died Friday October 24, 2014, after becoming ill at home when her pager went off for a residential structure fire. Christi Rodgers, 26, had awakened with difficulty breathing after her pager alerted her to a house fire. Firefighter Rodgers, a 10-year veteran, immediately went into cardiac arrest and was transported to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

She was a volunteer firefighter for 10 years, at Rawlinsville and Robert Fulton Fire companies. Members of her former fire company responded to her house as Robert Fulton FC fought the fire.

Assistant Chief Dan Appel of the Robert Fulton FC, said he was in command of the fire in Peach Bottom when he heard about Rodgers’ death. “I learned about it halfway through [the fire],” Appel said. “It made the job a little harder knowing that one of our own was going

through that.”

Christi Rodgers’ husband, James Rodgers, Jr., is also a firefighter with Robert Fulton.

Visitations were held October 29, 2014, at the Worship Center in Lancaster and Rodgers was interred at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Cemetery, Peach Bottom after a service at the Wesley United Methodist Church.

CVVFA Spring Meeting Held Chief Allen Baldwin and the Winchester (VA) Fire Department hosted the Spring Meeting of the CVVFA held at Friendship Fire Company. The meeting culminated the Apple Blossom Festival. Allen and wife Julie rode on their 1947 Buffalo engine that once served the now defunct Sarah Zane Fire Company in the 80th Annual Firefighters Parade that is billed as the world’s largest firefighter’s parade.

Chief Anthony Correia Selected as Fire/Ems Liaison at the Emergency Responder Safety Institute Anthony Correia was appointed as a Fire/Ems Liaison by the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association Emergency Responder Safety Institute. The Institute operates ResponderSafety.com and the ResponderSafety Learning Network. In his new role Tony will work to engage more fire and EMS personnel and focus on the state of New Jersey where he resides.

Chief Correia is a 38 year member of the fire and emergency services and has held the rank of various emergency service leadership positions. He recently retired as Director of the Burlington Township New Jersey Fire Department.

Previous to that he was Fire Chief in Warrensburg, Missouri. He is also an active paramedic in Pennsylvania. Chief Correia led a workgroup of Fire & EMS personnel in New Jersey to develop a collaborative Emergency Incident Rehabilitation guideline for New Jersey. He is a member of the Burlington County Highway Incident Management Working Group. He is active in many local, state and national organizations, which includes being the lead advocate in New Jersey for the National Fallen Firefighter's Foundation.
