Why Third-Party Certification Matters: A Mark of Trust and Quality
In today’s fire safety environment, third-party certification is more than a regulatory checkbox, it’s a powerful statement of your organisation’s competence, credibility, and commitment to high standards. For businesses and professionals alike, certification offers an objective validation that systems, processes, and products meet recognised safety benchmarks. That’s why we’re proud to say that, to become an FIA member, a company must hold third-party certification, a clear reflection of our shared commitment to professionalism, accountability, and raising the bar for fire safety across the board.
At the FIA, we support members through every stage of the third-party certification journey. Our Route to Certification Package provides tailored guidance, documentation support, and consultancy to help companies achieve accredited status with confidence.
Beyond meeting compliance obligations, third-party certification provides a competitive edge. It reassures clients, insurers, and regulatory bodies that your company operates with integrity and technical excellence, reducing risk and building stronger trust in your services. In a marketplace where credibility is everything, certification not only safeguards reputations but also opens doors to new business opportunities, long-term partnerships, and continued professional growth.
The Business Case for
Certification
Demonstrates Compliance
Achieving certification provides independent, third-party assurance that your organisation is fully aligned with fire safety legislation and recognised British Standards. It demonstrates a clear commitment to professionalism and safety, giving confidence to regulators, customers, and stakeholders alike.
Certification also helps to reduce operational and legal risk, supports the inspection process, and ensures that your business is always prepared for evolving regulations. By staying ahead of legal obligations, you strengthen your reputation, gain a competitive advantage, and position your organisation as a trusted leader in the fire industry.
Builds Business Credibility
Certified companies stand out in a crowded marketplace. Customers, insurers, and stakeholders recognise certification as proof of competence and reliability. It signals that you don’t just say you meet best practice – you can prove it.
Supports Tender Opportunities
Many large contracts, particularly within the public sector, stipulate certified suppliers as a prerequisite. Without it, businesses risk being excluded from lucrative opportunities. Certification is therefore not only about compliance but also about growth and market access.
Drives Operational Excellence
Certification requires robust quality management systems, documentation, and auditing processes. This isn’t simply a one-off achievement – it embeds a culture of continuous improvement, helping companies run more efficiently, reduce errors, and improve customer satisfaction.
Strengthens Industry Reputation
By holding third-party certification, your company contributes to raising industry standards. This collective commitment enhances public confidence in fire safety services as a whole, strengthening the sector’s professional standing.
Whether you’re seeking product approval, system accreditation or personal certification, the FIA acts as your expert partner, helping you meet your compliance obligations while setting your business apart in a competitive marketplace.

Why It Matters
The introduction of the Building Safety Act has further underlined the importance of competence in the fire industry. This legislation specifically emphasises the need for professionals involved in building design, construction, and management to demonstrate a high level of expertise and accountability. The recent update to BS 5839-1:2025, which sets out the code of practice for fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings, has brought about important changes that all fire safety professionals must understand and implement.
The FIA has played a crucial role in supporting its members through these changes. By offering upto-date training, detailed guidance, and resources tailored to the new BS 5839-1:2025 standard, the FIA ensures that members are well-equipped to interpret and apply the latest requirements. FIA training goes beyond simply meeting industry expectations – it empowers members to align with current legal obligations and adopt best practice, particularly in light of evolving regulations like the Building Safety Act and the updated British Standard.
As a member, you’re not only saving money – you’re joining a growing network of fire safety professionals committed to doing things the right way.
By staying connected with the FIA, members gain more than technical know-how – they gain a voice in shaping the industry’s future. Through consultation responses, standards committees, and close engagement with government, the FIA ensures that the concerns of its members are heard at the highest levels. This means that membership isn’t just about keeping up with change, but about actively influencing it, helping to create a safer, more professional fire industry for everyone.
By engaging with the FIA, members not only stay compliant and competitive but also demonstrate their commitment to raising standards across the fire industry. This collective effort strengthens the professionalism of the sector, drives innovation, and ultimately delivers safer outcomes for the communities we all serve.

Councils & Working Groups
Purpose of FIA Councils
The beating heart of the FIA is its Councils and Working Groups. It is where all our technical prowess and knowledge is generated and formed into industry leading guidance and training.
The FIA is governed by eight elected Councils, each representing a key sector of the fire safety industry. Each Council focuses on its sector’s unique challenges and priorities, whether that’s fire detection and alarms, extinguishing systems, emergency lighting, or service and maintenance. These Councils don’t just debate issues, they actively shape the standards, codes of practice, and training that set the benchmark for the wider fire industry.
Fire Detection & Alarm Council
The Fire Detection & Alarm Council is the hub for developers and installers of detection and alarm systems. It leads on the interpretation and revision of BS 5839-1, EN 54 and related technical codes, hosts device-performance trials, and issues Bulletins on topics like wireless technology, multi-sensor detectors and system reliability. By pooling field data and lab insights, the Council ensures detection standards keep pace with emerging hazards and installation techniques.
Services Council
The Services Council unites installers, designers, commissioners and maintainers of fire-protection systems, ranging from sprinklers and extinguishers to emergency lighting and fire doors. It develops templates for technical reports, issues guidance on commissioning protocols and supports the FIA Technical Audit Portal (TAP). By standardising service-delivery criteria and running competency schemes, the Council raises quality benchmarks and helps members demonstrate consistent, compliant workmanship.
FRES Council
The Fire & Rescue Equipment Suppliers (FRES) Council brings together manufacturers and suppliers of goods and services used by Fire & Rescue Services, from hydraulic cutting tools and thermal imaging cameras to specialist rescue kits. Members debate operational feedback from front-line crews, develop Best Practice Guides for equipment selection and maintenance, and liaise with national agencies to ensure new products meet the evolving needs of rescue teams. By coordinating product trials and sharing incident data, the FRES Council helps shape procurement standards and drives innovation in life-saving technology.
Export Council
The Export Council supports members in expanding their international reach by navigating export regulations, trade agreements and foreign certification requirements. Through trade missions, market-intelligence briefings and introductions to overseas distributors, the Council works alongside UK government export promotion bodies to open doors in key markets. Regular seminars cover topics such as CIF/FOB terms, foreign standards harmonisation and finance instruments, giving members the confidence and contacts to grow overseas.
Extinguishing Council
Representing manufacturers and suppliers of fixed and portable extinguishing media, such as gaseous, foam, watermist and dry chemicals, the Extinguishing Council oversees the development of technical specifications and test protocols. Members contribute to updates of EN 15004 (gaseous systems), BS 5306-0 (foam systems) and other standards, organise joint fire-testing programmes and produce guidance on environmental impact, installation best practice and agent compatibility.
Fire Risk Assessment Council
Charged with representing risk-assessment professionals, this Council refines fire-risk methodology, maintains the FIA Code of Conduct for assessors and shapes guidance on competence and ethics. Members collaborate on scenario-modelling tools, review incidents to refine hazard matrices, and provide input to BSI committees on risk-based approaches. Their work underpins the quality and consistency of fire-risk assessments across the UK.
Fire Engineering Council
The Fire Engineering Council champions performance-based fire-safety design and consultancy. Its members draft Best Practice Guides on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), structural fire safety and human behaviour modelling, peerreview complex project proposals and represent the industry on CEN/ISO engineering committees. By sharing case studies and fostering professional training, the Council advances sophisticated design techniques that go beyond prescriptive rules.
Technology Council
The FIA Technology Council is focused on meaningful technological improvements within the fire safety sector. Its programme includes collaborating on open, interoperable standards; evaluating emerging technologies; delivering education and training; running pilot projects to validate solutions; issuing cybersecurity guidance; and advocating with regulators and policymakers on technology issues.

Tailored Support
We don’t do off-the-shelf answers. Each response is tailored to your specific project, ensuring compliance with the latest British and European standards. This means our guidance isn’t just generic information, it’s practical, project-focused advice that takes into account your unique circumstances, challenges, and requirements. From reviewing design specifications to helping you interpret new regulations; our goal is to give you the confidence that your work not only meets legal obligations but also reflects best practice. By tailoring our support in this way, we help you deliver safer, more effective solutions while protecting your reputation and strengthening trust with your clients.
Shaping Standards & Compliance
Our experts sit on key BSI committees and working groups, influencing standards such as BS 5306 (portable fire extinguishers), BS 7273 (fire system interfaces) and BS 5839 (fire detection and alarm). Through direct involvement, we:
Interpret New Legislation
The FIA translates complex legislative updates into clear, actionable guidance notes and technical bulletins. Instead of spending hours trying to interpret new requirements, members receive concise explanations that highlight what has changed, why it matters, and what steps need to be taken. This ensures businesses remain fully informed, confident, and compliant whenever new fire safety laws, standards, or regulations come into effect.
Champion Best Practice
We go beyond compliance by actively championing best practice across the fire industry. Through fact files, position statements, and expert publications, the FIA provides clarity on topics such as “verified alternatives,” user responsibilities, and technical interpretations. These resources don’t just inform, they set benchmarks for excellence, helping members demonstrate professionalism, reduce risk, and lead by example in delivering safe, high-quality fire safety solutions.
Drive Competency
At the heart of FIA training is the unrivalled technical expertise of our team. Every course and CPD certification is developed in line with the latest standards and legislation, shaped by the team’s direct involvement in technical committees and regulatory discussions.
Get Involved
By joining a Council or Working Group, members gain early insight into emerging Standards, contribute to funded research projects (for instance on multi-sensor and video fire detectors) and build valuable networks with peers and regulators. To ensure that new council members feel supported and quickly become involved, a mentor scheme is in place for all newcomers, offering guidance and reassurance throughout their integration. Your input helps shape the guidance documents that thousands of fire-safety professionals rely on every day, ensuring that the FIA remains the definitive voice of the UK fire-safety industry.
Your membership goes beyond access to advice. Join our working groups, submit questions for future FAQs, or contribute to forthcoming guidance documents. Together, we’ll continue to raise the bar for fire safety across the UK and Europe.
Events & Exhibitions
Major FIA Events: Opportunities to attend, exhibit, or sponsor
Overview
The FIA hosts and is involved in many events of all shapes and sizes throughout the year. The aim is to provide as many different opportunities and platforms, for the broadest number of member companies as possible. These events focus on the commercial growth of FIA member companies and educational opportunities for both the fire industry and end-users.
Below is an overview and some examples of the types of events that we are involved in during an average year.
FIM Expo
• The Fire Industry Manufacturers (FIM) Expo is a travelling exhibition and conference that features many of the UK fire industry’s manufacturers and showcases the latest products and developments across a range of industry sectors. What makes FIM Expo different to many other trade exhibitions is the informal format, regional focus, and ability to see the latest products from all the major fire industry manufacturers in one place. In recent years we have visited; Belfast, Cardiff, Nottingham, Portsmouth and Harrogate.
• The exhibition coincides with an FIA conference enabling attendees to meet all our exhibitors as well as gain valuable knowledge and insight from influential figures in the industry.
• FIM Expo offers a wonderful opportunity to meet and network with industry leaders. On the day, delegates can place orders with our exhibitors and gain valuable information about industry-leading products.
• Engage in in-depth discussions with a diverse range of fire industry stakeholders specifically, from installation and maintenance companies as well as end users. With the FIA, you can expand your knowledge and network.
AGM & Annual Lunch
• The FIA AGM and Annual Lunch is the highlight event in the fire safety calendar. This is the only event to find all the most influential individuals in the UK fire industry under one roof and is unmatched when it comes to networking. Over the years the event has continued to grow, 2024 saw over 560 guests come together for a fantastic day.
• The event combines our Annual General Meeting, where members come together to hear about the achievements of the association over the last 12 months and what we have planned for the future. Our Annual Lunch consists of a three-course meal, followed by our Young Technician of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Awards, as well as entertainment.
Overseas Events – The FIA Fire
Safety Summit Series
The FIA is committed to supporting the activities of its exporting member companies. Lead by the Export Council, the FIA targets overseas opportunities in order to provide its members with a range of options and security when it comes to growing the export side of their business.
Below are some examples from recent years.
Cyprus 2023
In 2023 we kickstarted the Fire Safety Summit series with the first event in Cyprus, with the intention of bringing the industry together and establishing FIA Cyprus, an association for Cypriots run by Cypriots. The event was split between exhibition and conference with a mix of UK and Cypriot manufacturers, exhibiting and speaking at the conference. This event was a huge success; FIA Cyprus has been established and continues to grow.
Ireland 2024
Following the success of the fire safety summit in Cyprus, after calls with the Irish fire industry, the FIA hosted a fire safety summit in the Republic of Ireland at Dublin’s landmark convention centre. The event brought together some of the UK and Ireland’s top manufacturers to showcase the latest advancements across various industry sectors, as well as bringing together the UK and Irish industries with over 145 delegates. In similar fashion to Cyprus, the event was a great success, with excellent discussion and calls for the FIA to have greater involvement in the Irish market. Following the event, we’ve been working closely with the industry in Ireland to identify how we can most effectively support them going forwards.
Gibraltar 2025
The latest stop in our Fire Safety Summit Series took us to Gibraltar; a growing industry hub with significant ongoing and future construction. The visit provided a valuable opportunity for knowledge sharing and learning within the Gibraltarian fire safety sector. The event was a far bigger success than we could have planned for, with over 120 delegates in attendance. The core message centred on the importance of knowledge sharing and proactive learning to help strengthen fire safety practices in Gibraltar. The local industry responded with great enthusiasm and a clear willingness to collaborate.
Coming up in 2025
We have an action-packed Autumn events period, in which we are supporting FIA member companies in the following regions:

Hochiki Europe Protects Students from False Alarms
Two eight-storey student accommodation developments in Frankfurt and Munich, each housing 239 residents, were built under The Flag brand to provide smart, flexible city living. Meeting the complex safety requirements of these sites meant complying with EN 54 standards and ensuring high reliability to protect residents and minimise false alarms.
To achieve this, 800 intelligent multi-sensor detectors were installed, programmed to only trigger alarms when both smoke and heat reach set levels, reducing unnecessary evacuations. Similarly, the chosen base sounders include smart features like auto shutdown to help prevent noise pollution common in large residential buildings.
