From the quilts and rugs of old, patchwork has long enjoyed its reign as a key look within interior design. But as times and tastes change, the trend for patchwork has evolved with eclectic designs and intricate patterns coming together to form contemporary works of art. While many tile collections offer patchwork designs, the House of British Ceramic is keen to demonstrate how you can create your own style, bringing together tiles from different ranges into one colour palette to design a striking feature wall in the bathroom.

Claire explains: “We are all becoming much more experimental with our wall coverings, bringing the latest trends and designs into our homes. Patchwork is a hot trend that can turn a simple bathroom wall into a stunning centre piece by mixing and matching tiles from a number of different ranges into one eclectic design.”

When creating a patchwork design with tiles, try combining different sizes for maximum impact. If you stay within the parameters of a square shape, you can combine large square tiles with small square formats and even mosaics for visual interest and intrigue.

For this look to work, it’s important to remain within one colour palette to avoid tiles clashing. Monochrome offers a kaleidoscope of different shades from jet black, through to gunmetal, dove grey and off white, all of which work effortlessly together.

Many floor tiles can also be used on walls too, especially if they are ceramic like British Ceramic Tile’s Feature Floors collection.

The power of a geometric pattern

Wall and floor coverings have taken an edgy turn. In fact, the more edges the better, with geometric shapes now taking centre stage. Bringing a new dimension to rooms, geometric tiles with their simple, clean lines offer a whole host of different design possibilities. The Hex collection from the House of British Ceramic Tile embraces the trend for hexagonal shapes. With an achromatic colour palette, Hex can be used together in sweeping blocks of colour or individually offering maximum design flexibility. Made from porcelain, Hex is suitable for both walls and floors and can be used outdoors as an alternative to traditional decking or flagging. Available in four colours; black, grey, white and cream, each 175x202mm tile is extremely hard-wearing and comes in a gloss or matt finish. ÂŁ72/sqm

THE TRANSLUCENT BEAUTY OF GLASS Elegant yet contemporary, glass is much admired for its translucent beauty and ability to naturally bounce light around a room. Highly reflective, glass tiles instantly capture and reflect the light to create a feeling of space even in small rooms.

Be bold by opting for dark colour to add a sense of drama to walls

CUTTING A SHAPE When it comes to tiling walls, it pays to be adventurous. A simple, elegant glass tile can be transformed into a modern, intriguing design using a basket weave pattern. By alternating horizontal and vertical patterns, you can make the tile the hero of the room rather than a supporting artist, allowing the interesting pattern to draw the attention.

Jayne says: “A basket weave design is relatively straightforward with a touch of forward planning. The main factor to consider is being accurate with the layout, both vertically and horizontally, and to ensure the tiles are laid neatly so all lines are sharp and linear. The key to creating a standout design is using a contrasting grout that will show off the pattern.”

FEATURE FLOORS COLLECTION

Tiled floors have stood the test of time. From their early origins thousands of years ago, decorative tiled floors have adorned our homes becoming the goto option when looking at kitchen, bathroom and hallway floor coverings. Patterned tiles in particular have risen in popularity bringing with them a fresh perspective. ALFRED

Look fabulous under foot “If your home is looking a little tired, a new floor can transform your décor from drab to fab. With so many styles and options available, you can make a feature of your floors and create something extra special underfoot whether it’s a period look you’re after or a luxurious marble effect,” says Jayne.

With tiled flooring enjoying its moment in the spotlight, there’s never been a better time to invest in a feature floor. Made using the latest HD inkjet technology, the new Henry and Alfred designs, both part of the Feature Floors collection, offer highly decorative patterns in on-trend tones of grey and beige.

PL AY I T C OOL , S TAY W I T H GR E Y Chic and modern, grey has become the modern day magnolia. The hottest neutral to rock the world of interiors, grey offers a multitude of different shades from gunmetal to slate, graphite to pewter and looks set to remain a firm favourite in the world of interior design. Part of the Ted Baker Residence collection from British Ceramic Tile, GeoTile combines a sleek, on-trend grey colour palette with Ted’s favourite geometric prints taken from their menswear collection. With an eclectic mix of 12 different prints, the GeoTile range is made from hardwearing, high specification porcelain, making it ideal for use on wall and floors, both indoors and out. Jayne says: “Offering a neutral, hushed background for brighter accent colours, grey makes for an easy base colour to work with. If using lots of colour isn’t your thing, grey can also offer an understated, contemporary option for walls and floors even when used on it’s own, especially when blending or layering several different shades together to add depth and make an intricate, eye-catching pattern.” Inspired by the Edwardian tiles that lead up the pathways of London’s iconic townhouses, GeoTile is designed to co-ordinate perfectly with British Ceramic Tile’s VersaTile range, meaning you can easily create a feature wall or floor by mixing and matching between collections for a stylish border or rug style effect.

T HE P OW ER OF PAT T ER N Jayne says: “Beautiful patterns and patchwork designs have an incredibly powerful effect when updating the home. They not only help to add depth and substance to a room scheme, they can also create a focal point with a feature wall panel or floor.”

WHITE COLLECTION Modern minimalism with white A BLANK CANVAS Fresh, contemporary, versatile; white has long topped the charts when it comes to our favourite colour within the home. A blank canvas, white provides a neutral backdrop on which we can build, adding layers of interest through texture and complementary colours. In celebration of our lasting affection for minimalist, pared back interiors, the White collection from Laura Ashley has been designed to offer a modern take on a classic colour. With subtle, printed structures and lustre finishes, the result is a collection of beautifully unassuming tiles set to make a big style statement.

OMAR COLLECTION

When east meets west...

Combining traditional Eastern style with a Western vibe, British Ceramic Tile’s V&A Omar wall and floor tiles add style, colour and interest to any interior design scheme.

A ceramic tile collection, V&A Omar brings together the Victorian fascination with the decorative Islamic Middle East in a vibrant and eye-catching style. Influenced by the original drawings illustrated in Owen Jones’ The Grammar of Ornament, the colourful designs are reflective of Islamic art’s respect for nature, and regard for mathematical order and harmony. Omar’s bold blue, buttercup yellow and leaf green tones together with a striking geometric pattern make for a powerful combination that will instantly enliven walls and floors in need of an update and add a sense of personality to any home.

Show-stopping bold & beautiful Jayne says: “Patterned tiles with a strong Middle Eastern design influence are very on trend at the moment. For best results team with plain walls and pick out one of Omar’s central colours with your furnishings and accessories.”

Mix and match has never been so stylish

A SENSE OF INDIVIDUALITY Inspired by the traditions and style from the Middle East, Galicia and Temara, part of the V&A collection, combine to create a unique, eye-catching patchwork design. When married expertly together, these two stunning ceramic designs create a highly decorative, ornate pattern with beautiful bold shades of cobalt and Aegean blues offset by crisp whites and leaf greens for a truly unique wall covering. Galicia’s intricate blue and green floral design is beautifully drawn out by a high gloss vetrosa coating, which also creates a slightly raised finish, while Temara’s more simple yet equally striking, cobalt blue and white flower pattern also features a high gloss finish.
