Dear Nordic friends, It is the time of year we have all been waiting for, the time when we all gather to strengthen our Nordic collaboration, exchange ideas, learn something new and meet both new and old friends. In the first organising committee (OC) meeting, the goal was set to offer you the best FINO yet, which is why we are extremely excited and grateful to share these coming days with you. The OC has been working hard to ensure a great conference, social program, as well as a Pre-FINO trip, should you wish to get to know Iceland better.

When deciding on a theme, we wanted it to be current, scientific, public health related and moreover, we wanted to discuss a topic that Icelanders hold very dear to heart. It is therefore with pleasure that we invite you to tackle the topic of cancer under the title Global Action Against Cancer: Join the fight!

We have worked on the agenda with Icelandic specialists as well as the European Cancer Leagues (ECL) in order to bring you the best experience possible. Now, we are excited to get your input on the matter and seek solutions on how we can join our Nordic forces in order to fight cancer.

The location of the conference as well as the social program has been carefully thought out and we hope that you will enjoy every single bit of it.

I am fortunate to be a part of such an outstanding OC, thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all your hard work. The committee is grateful for all the people involved in the planning of FINO, thank you.

WHAT IS FINO? Every year in the beginning of November, around 50 Nordic medical students gather for a four day conference called FINO. FINO is short for Federation of International Nordic Medical Students’ Organisations and can be thought of as a subregional IFMSA meeting (International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations), where students in the Nordic countries take turns in hosting a conference, each year with a new and exciting theme, decided by the hosting country’s organising committee. Hence, this year it is our turn in Iceland.

The conference aims to create a platform which hopes to sustain and develop communication and cooperation between the participating countries’ medical students and to provide the opportunity to make friendships that will hopefully last for a long time. The Nordic countries are similar in many ways, which we believe is a strength when it comes to learning from each other. Therefore, we hope you will leave the conference with your hearts full of inspiration, new knowledge and wonderful friends.

This year’s topic is cancer. Tackling cancer is a shared problem among the Nordic countries, that clearly needs to be addressed. We believe that the products of this conference will give rise to new ideas to get people talking about cancer prevention, a goal which can potentially have a major effect in all the Nordic countries.

THE THEME: CANCER After careful contemplation and lively discussions among the OC we came to the conclusion to focus this years FINO on cancer treatment.

But we wanted to do something different, we did not only want to tackle one aspect of treating cancer but rather, instead opted for a holistic approach in which the social problem of cancer is discussed. In light of that we decided that the discussion will revolve around the three pillars of the social problem of cancer; prevention, treatment and survivorship.

The OC has worked tirelessly on the program and is excited to be working with a slew of impressive yet accessible lectures, all tackling cancer within their own leagues. Workshops will then in turn provide a scene were the participants can implement their acquired knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact.

The workshops will aim to discuss and create easily implementable projects emphasizing cancer prevention which the participants can execute in their respective countries.

This years FINO is held in collaboration with The European Cancer League and together we will provide an open lecture in which everyone interested in the topic can attend. Much in line with our goal of increasing social awareness on how we can join forces to fight cancer!

THE

SOCIAL PROGRAM The social program for FINO 2019 will be outstanding. For those who are extra excited about this year’s FINO we offer the pre FINO trip where we will explore the wonders of the Icelandic southside. On Thursday after the opening ceremony we will start the formal social program with a group trip to Reykjavik’s oldest swimming pool where we will enjoy the cold winter air of Reykjavík.

On Friday evening we will invite FINO guests to join a classic Icelandic university tradition, a science trip to an Icelandic company related to the health care industry. The science trip includes a presentation of our hosts operations followed by drinks and snacks that they offer generously. After the science trip we will go on a barhopping tour de Reykjavík which will end on one of the best dancefloors available.

Saturday evening will be the night of the FINO gala! We will enjoy wonderful food looking our best where the dress code will be “dress to impress”. One of the high points of the night will be the first (annual?) Finovision where the nations will compete by performing an old Eurovision hit from their country.

This is the only rule, the rest is open for interpretation.

In between lectures and workshops we will plan microfuns to restore the brain and laugh a little!

ACCOMMODATION Accommodation will be provided for every guest at Hlemmur Square hostel, located in downtown Reykjavik. Next to the hostel is Reykjavík’s most central bus hub, providing fast, easy and inexpensive transport to every corner of the city.

The conference’s program will take place at three geographically distinct locations. At the University of Iceland's Læknagarður and Stakkahlíð as well as the Children's Hospital (Barnaspítalinn). Each location is within 15 min walking distance from each other and from Hlemmur Square. Participants will be required to walk between locations on demand. Therefore it is pivotal, given the unpredictability of Icelandic weather, that participants bring warm winter clothes.

INTERNET INFO

A free hot spot connection is available at the hostel, you will get the password when you check in. An eduroam connection is at our university, so if you have connected to eduroam at your university you will be able to connect to it at the conference halls.

TRAVEL INFORMATION Arriving to Reykjavík

The only international airport in Iceland is Keflavík airport, located approximately 45 minutes outside of Reykjavík. The best way to get from the airport to the city is via bus. It is both a lot cheaper and more eco-friendly than taking a taxi, which is the other option. There are two options of bus companies listed below.

1) Flybus This is the official bus from the airport to Reykjavík, the busses are located right outside of the airport and the departure time is connected to your flight.

You can both buy tickets online or at the airport when you arrive.

The ticket is a little cheaper if you buy it online, approximately 3.300 ISK. Here is a link to the Flybus website 2) Strætó This is the bus company that drives all around the country and has a fixed schedule of departure from the airport as seen below.

You can buy tickets in the arrival hall at the 10-11 store, or you can use their app, Strætó. If you use the app, be sure to choose a country ticket.

The bus fare with Strætó is approximately 1880 ISK from the airport.
