Within a narrowing architectural field the scope in which proffessionals practice needs to refocus to serve those who need design input the most. This is not the rich and powerful but often the vunerable and historically underserved. In my thesis I focus in on the broad catagory of rural/regional communities which due to transitioning industries and urbanization are being tested to their limits as populations drop and infrastructure both crucial to economies, communities and history are beginning to crumble. This architectural intervention aims to redesign a design practice built upon a network of staged projects using design education and empowerment, lofi and inherently flexibile solutions bringing together local communities, resources and production for a more resilient future.

Locating the project/practice within overlayed and overlapping social, cultural architectural and industrial lanscapes

the mobile office --> The architect instead of being a fixed node in which the rest of the system has to flow through it instead becomes part of the mobile pieces that go between nodes and serve them allowing momentum to build and locality to reside in the people not in the designer

An adaption of the Mobile Design Office (caravan model) is the bike trailer which will be constructed and used to test the delivery of mobile design ideas and interactive tasks.

An exploration of the architectural sketch in response to my fear and struggle with the blank white page. Inforcing a continued interest with the existing fabric of both our architeectural landscape and our other social and cultural landscapes which provide the richness we all rely on. The project also became a conversation around the boldness of new thinking in often frowned upon in the field of architectural design.

In Auckland the shift to move the inner city away from the domination as a business district and turn it into one of the largest residential and mixed-use suburbs is creating a junction between the urban landscape dominated by cars and men in suits towards a space for people, communities and in particular those of us who are most vulnerable‌ our children. This project aims to create a hub for children in the city to learn through playing, making and taking risks all within the company of others.

Beyond this project it will then act as a precedent for a more playful architecture within the city that encourages interaction and participation in the creation of our daily environments.

The use of specific media in this project aimed to align with the design proposal using analog media in a design process that was about physically interacting with an idea, having fun with materials, and giving the design the opportunity to change and evolve through my own mistakes. For the final presentation a similar use of media was used to the process however now it was also about communicating the idea at the appropriate level of resolution to its purpose and audience through hand sketches and collage.

The project does not seek to be fully resolved and detailed final instead it acts as a propositional vision of what is possible through the theoretical framework outlined by my research and making process which would then be defined by the individual users.

This project was influenced by the practice of still life to represent how architecture can be seen as a series of individual objects that together as a compostion tell a narative. This concept originated from the idea of the foreign object and how upon the banks of the Guadalquivir the people of Seville discovered the colonies through the eyes of the artifact.

The Project breaks down the scale of what we as the viewer is perceiving as the composition. At first it is the building as a whole on the riverbank, then it is the internal composition of the pathways and vessels that form the museum and lastly it is the the artifact exhibited. Each compostion gives the viewer information whether it be about which part of the museum they are in or the function and importance of the objects. This narrowing done of information and space is flipped when in the last section of the museum the oculus of screens shows our reality away from the outside light and the solid reality of the past as we venture into the uncomposed and undoctered modern world of globalization and the online world.

Rata’s Lesson of Whakaatanga

In this project the idea of a powhiri space was reimagined for the Auckland Council following thedesign process of a narrative driven design. In this concept the story of rata and the tree was reimagined as a scenario where rata follows the correct procedures to gain permission and in turn reaps the rewards. This translates into an architecture which acts as beacon and encourages a collaborative community where having a mediating body is a necessary process of change.

This project was located next o the heritage Old Government House and it proposed a design that criticed the modern disposable attitude towards buildingmaterial. This project was highly theoretical analysing architectural movements such as those with the postmodern era and applying them to a series of typological forms such as the tower the courtyard and the wall.

Completed for a course focused on expressive representation of space and form in the architectual practice. Taught by Michael Osullivan it gave us an oppurtunity to get out amongst the city and observe the things around us with a pencil and some watercolours.

This project became a satyrical critic on society. centring around the idea of the devils advocate the project is a tower housing all the seven deadly sins highlighting all the worse parts in society and becoming the antithesis of what is needed in a township such as Avondale.
