A Message to Our Graduates from DR. ROBERT K. NYE,
PRESIDENT OF FLCC
Welcome to the Fifty-Sixth Finger Lakes Community College Commencement. It is important to take time with family and friends and recognize major milestones in our lives. Many of our graduates have chosen to participate in the traditional ceremony in Canandaigua and plan to welcome guests at homes, parks and other gathering places afterward.
Others will celebrate in smaller get-togethers, due to work and family commitments or the sheer distances from the main campus. FLCC is a community that grows wider with each passing year. We also have students attend entirely online from across the country and around the world, making meaningful connections through online classes, clubs and events.
FLCC alumni will always be part of the heart and soul of the Finger Lakes. It is exciting to know they will also bring the values and lessons of the College to communities around the world as well.
Graduates, wherever you are now and wherever you go, please know that the faculty and staff share their best wishes for the future. Once a Laker, always a Laker!

About Today’s Keynote Speaker
RICK PLYMPTON, FLCC ALUMNUS AND CEO OF OPTIMAX
FLCC alumnus Rick Plympton is the CEO of Optimax, a precision optics manufacturer in Ontario, Wayne County. Rick earned three associate degrees in the 1980s: engineering science, computer science and business administration, and then graduated from the University of Rochester with a bachelor’s degree in optics. He holds an MBA from the University of Rochester’s Simon Business School.
Rick has provided leadership and vision at Optimax since 1995, enabling the company to grow from a small startup to America’s largest precision optics manufacturer for the medical, digital technology, military and aerospace industries. For example, Optimax lenses have been used in the Mars rover missions and on the International Space Station.
Rick works with colleges and universities to strengthen the optics workforce. A previous member of the FLCC Foundation Board of Directors, he is also a member of the New York State Workforce Investment Board and serves on the Board of Directors for Canandaigua National Bank and Trust.
Rick received the FLCC Distinguished Alumni Award in 2008, and he was inducted into the Rochester Business Hall of Fame in 2018. He was a 2018-19 Job Quality Fellow with the Aspen Institute, which seeks to expand the availability of good jobs to improve workers’ lives and their communities.

A reception, sponsored by AVI Fresh, for graduates and their families will be held in the Finger Lakes Café on the second floor of the Student Center immediately after the ceremony.

Ontario ARC’s College Experience gives individuals with developmental disabilities an opportunity to develop skills that will prepare them for employment and help them achieve greater independence. Finger Lakes Community College and Hobart and William Smith Colleges serve as the learning environments for Ontario ARC’s program. This year, we are pleased to celebrate an ARC College Experience graduate: Justin Wade.

ACADEMIC REGALIA
Academic regalia serves as a symbol of student accomplishments. The cap, gown and hood indicate the academic degree earned by the wearer. The color of the tassel represents the field of the degree earned. Some students also wear cords or stoles to show their commitment to certain clubs or organizations. At FLCC, these include:
• AALANA Green, gold and red cords, and officers wear a black stole with green, gold and red writing
• Active Minds Blue and green cords
• EOP Dark blue cords
• Honors Studies Blue, gold and green cords
• Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Blue and gold cords, and officers wear gold stoles with the Phi Theta Kappa crest
• Prism Blue, lavender and green cords
