Love to read? Nothing better on a fall day than to cuddle up with a good book! Don’t forget about our wonderful on-site library! Thanks to Anita and the library committeewe have many options! Thanks for all you do!

Chuck Lamson, Development Officer

You may have heard the Chinese saying… If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap; If you want happiness for a day, go fishing; If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune; If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody. Our Lord himself asserted, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

The Tudor Oaks Development Office congratulates all who purchased bakery, found a treasure at the craft sale, put on tennis shoes for the “Walk,” or offered a freewill donation in exchange for lunch—all in support of the Alzheimer's Association! We also thank those that spent considerable time and effort baking goods, making crafts, and donating items for sale!

We are grateful to the volunteers and staff that gave invaluable help. Thank you Claire Liptrot, Reverend Michelle Peterson and Wendy Meyer and team for their leadership in the events supporting this drive for a worthy cause!

Please Welcome Amanda - our infection control nurse along with staff development! Amanda started her nursing adventure way back in HS and received her RN from UWM. For the last 18 years, Amanda has worked at the VA in Union Grove. She said she feels a little like a fish out of water after that many years somewhere else but she was ready for a change and excited to be here. She also commented on how fun it is to see so many women here at Tudor Oaks - as the VA was full of “grumpy old men” as she put it with a smile but she loved every one of them!

Amanda is celebrating 20 years of marriage this month and took her first trip alone with her hubby! Welldeserved! They live in Burlington with their two children, Lily (17) and Evan (13). Besides hanging with kids and hubby, Amanda likes puzzles, reading and WI sports! Going to Green Bay is one of her very favorite things to do! Amanda is looking forward to getting to know everyone. The beauty of the campus and the friendliness of the staff reeled me in. Amanda is right across from the library so please stop and say hi!

Franklin Roosevelt: An American Life

October 28: Franklin Roosevelt: Early Life

Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States, was born in Hyde Park, NY on January 30, 1882. His family was very wealthy, and FDR was tremendously close to his mother Sara Delano, and his father James. He attended boarding school at Groton out side of Boston, where he was greatly influenced by the Rev. Endicott Peabody who stressed to his students to always help the less fortunate. However, his greatest role model was his distant cou sin Thedore Roosevelt, a Republican, who became President of the United States in 1901, when Franklin was just 19 years old. He attended college at Harvard University, and law school at Colum bia University, and in 1903, he met and eventually married his distant cousin Eleanor Roosevelt. The two would eventually establish one of the greatest political partnerships in all of US history.

November 4: Roosevelt, Politics, and Polio

The United States became a major industrial power by the early 20th Century and joined the Allies in World War I. The nation unified under the leadership of President Woodrow Wilson amidst the call to “make the world safe for democracy.” Franklin Roosevelt, a fast riser in Democratic Party, was appointed by Wilson to become the Assistant Secretary to th e Navy. The United States joined World War I in 1917, and Germany and the Central Powers were fo rmally defeated the following year. The Paris Peace Conference that followed left major conce rns regarding the future of Europe and the world. While in Washington DC, FDR began an affair with Lucy Mercer, who was also Eleanor's personal assistant. When Eleanor discovered the affair, the Roosevelt marriage for all intents and purposes ended, but Franklin and Eleanor were able to establish the most significant political relationship in all of US history. In 1921, Franklin fell ill with polio, and the illness left him paralyzed from the waist down, and he could no longer walk or stand unassisted for the remainder of his life.

November 11: The Great Depression and Franklin Roosevelt

The economy was solid in the manufacturing sector, but agriculture experienced an expanding slump over the course of the decade. In 1928, Herbert Hoover was elected president, and he stressed at his inauguration that the nation would overcome poverty in t he near future. Unfortunately, just six months later, the stock market crashed, and the nation tumb led into the Great Depression. The Great Depression was the most significant economic event in American history. Unemployment and foreclosures on homes and businesses skyrocketed in the early 1930’s. Herbert Hoover was widely blamed for the economic chaos, and Hoovervilles or cardboard shacks, began appearing across the nation as millions of Americans were left homeless. Franklin Roosevelt decided to run for the White House, and in 1932 he defeated Hoover, and began his first of four terms as president. FDR stressed to Americans in 1933 that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” The New Deal sought to alleviate large-scale suffering in the nation, but th e war clouds rolling across Europe caused even greater concern as the decade continued.

November 25: The Origins of World War II and Franklin Roosevelt

Franklin Roosevelt attempted to lead the United States out of the Great Depression over the course of his first two terms in office with his New Deal legislation. Roosevelt was optimistic that all would be well, and as the decade progressed, he grew all the more concerned with the rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany. Americans wanted nothing to do with a Second World War in Europe and the nation was strictly isolationist. However, Roosevelt also realized that the corrosive evil of Nazi Germany needed to be stopped. On September 1, 1939 Germany invaded Poland and World War II began. WWII would be the most catastrophic war in human history taking the lives of 62 million people.

Inspirational Moment

It’s hard to believe that Fall is already here. As I have gotten older, I have begun to appreciate this time of year. For me, it is a time of renewal and regeneration. It’s a time to slow things down a bit and embrace the beauty that is happening all around me. In many ways, Fall is a time to begin again…a fresh start. I believe the changing of seasons is God’s way of reminding us that God is still active in creation.

Like the weather, we also have seasons in our lives that change as well. There are some changes in our lives that we experience that come like a torrent wind while other changes are like a calming sea. Some of the changes that we experience in our lives are great such as a wedding, the birth of a child, a new home, a new job or retirement. However, other changes are more challenging and devastating such as the loss of a job, the death of a spouse or child, moving from your home or dealing with serious illness. Change is an inevitable part of life. And, it doesn’t matter how old we are…change is sure to happen. Like Wisconsin weather, the seasons of our lives can change instantly.

However, I’ve noticed that it’s how we deal with change that matters. When changes occur in our lives, we should seek God regardless of whether or not those changes are good or bad. We need the grace of God to help us grow in faith in the midst of our changing circumstances. We should strive to have the mind of Christ when dealing with change. When we look to God for guidance in the midst of the changes we’re going through, we will often see things in a different perspective – God’s perspective.

As always….God loves you, so do I and there’s nothing you can do about it! Blessings, Pastor Michelle
