Fall News from the Leaf and Petal Greenhouse
It’s that 琀me of year when we get ready to bring our plants to the greenhouse as the weather turns chilly. Please check your plants for any bugs that might be living on them before you bring them to the greenhouse. Put your name tag on each pot and put your pots in a plas琀c saucer that you will 昀nd in the greenhouse. As your plants shed leaves and 昀owers, please sweep up a昀er them. You are responsible to water and care for your plants as no one else will do that. If you need any help with watering, let us know and we will help out. Put your dead plants, pots, and soil into the container by the door.
All of us are looking forward to another colorful assortment of 昀owers to enjoy all winter long as your plants enjoy being inside for the winter months. If you want to donate any unwanted plants, leave them on the table and s琀ck a dona琀on sign in the pot. Thank you.

In this season of thanksgiving, the Employee Gifts and Grants (EGG) committee members would like to thank all the generous residents who have contributed to the EGG Fund. Our Blue donation box will remain in storage during the course of the residents’ Christmas Fund Drive. We wish everyone a very enjoyable Thanksgiving! There will be a new monthly all-facility wellness calendar starting in November. These will be available on the wellness table in the front hallway. It will contain all wellness classes and times available across the facility. (These will no longer be on the Activity Calendars.)
SAVVY TUDOR OAKS RECYCLER
CHEERS!! to all the many, many STORs who are putting their clean plastic bags into the WHITE bins in the Recycling Rooms!!
Yes! Our plastic bags can be recycled by companies into more plastic bags.
Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6hzhKmw4EY
Hard to believe, but plastic bags are the number one contaminate in recycling loads. They act as “tanglers”, getting caught in the sorting machinery, shutting down equipment and recycling lines until removed.
Watch: https// www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlYLnHQ9peM
We are like a small village here at Tudor Oaks with nearly 125 IL residents. Collecting just our recyclable plastic bags two or three times a week from our Recycling Rooms, result in many larger sacks of those unneeded bags taken to a drop-off point (usually Wal-Mart). Keeping plastic bags out of the PAPER bins and the TALL COVERED bins make those recyclables useable. So once again--YES! YES! YES! Let’s place clean plastic bags in the WHITE bins in the Recycling Rooms. NO! NO! NO! Don’t put plastic bags into the PAPER or the TALL COVERED bins. If you do bring your recyclables to the Recycle Room in plastic bags---Empty them into the proper bin and then either throw them down the TRASH CHUTE, or if clean, place in the WHITE bin, or take them back to your apartment to refill again! We can all do our part as STORs ---Savvy Tudor Oaks Recyclers!! THANKS

A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen. 'Careful,' he said, 'CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh my gosh! You're cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my gosh! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They're going to STICK! Careful. CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you're cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don't forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!'
The wife stared at him. 'What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don't know how to fry a couple of eggs?' The husband calmly replied, 'I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I'm driving.'
Residents Highlight: Jul J Julie Wuie
Julie considers herself a “Yooper” as she was born in Menominee, Michigan but was only there for one year before her family moved to Milwaukee. She graduated from St. John’s Cathedral High School and a琀ended Marque琀e University a昀er that. Julie feels truly fortunate and thankful to God that she received a scholarship to a琀end Marque琀e University, as she did not think she would be able to a昀ord to go to college. Her scholarship was based on a wri琀en essay which was 昀 ng as she was a Journalism major. Along with the scholarship she was also able to get a job at Marque琀e that she had for all four years of college, un琀l her gradua琀on in 1961. She has a strong a nity for Marque琀e University to this day.
Julie’s father worked for Allis Chalmers and was an ar琀st as well. Her mother was a homemaker and later worked in the medical records o ce of Deaconess Hospital. She has four younger siblings—three sisters and one brother. Julie is a re琀red journalist, having worked at seven newspapers in four states. Julie’s 昀rst job was at the Green Bay Press Gaze琀e. She also did PR for three colleges and was at Northwestern Mutual for 12 years in Corporate Communica琀ons.
Julie met her 昀rst husband, Tom Agnew, while a琀ending Marque琀e University. They had 昀ve sons. Two of her sons and daughters in law live in the Milwaukee area and the other two sons and daughters in law live in Duluth, Minnesota. She has nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Julie unfortunately lost her oldest son, Dan, in a motorcycle accident in 2018. Julie’s second husband was Dr. Sherman Wu, who she met through her ski club. Sherman was a professor at Marque琀e University and was hired there to start a PhD program for electrical engineers. While at Marque琀e, he was on loan to NASA
and was responsible for the jet control systems for the Apollo mission (for the lunar module). Julie and Sherman were married for 17 years and during that 琀me travelled extensively. They visited six con琀nents, missing only Antarc琀ca. They loved Paris and visited eleven 琀mes! Their best trip was to South Africa where they went on several safaris and got to see many di昀erent types of African animals. A昀er Sherman passed away in 2010, Julie con琀nued to reside in Florida for another eight years. She moved back to Milwaukee in 2018.
Julie likes to do crossword puzzles and word searches in her free 琀me. She also loves watching movies on the Hallmark Channel. She has been a lector for over 48 years for the Catholic Church and con琀nues to be a lector here at Tudor Oaks. Julie enjoys walking and a relaxing dip in the hot tub. If possible, please send in PDF format to mhyde@abhomes.org. Submissions are due on the 15th of each month for the following month’s edition and can be given to a Lifestyle staff member or in the Poplar Lifestyle Room on top of the filing cabinet is a box (labeled Acorn) to place article.
