Employee Gi昀s & Grants Commi琀ee (EGG)

The Employee Gi昀s and Grants Commi琀ee and Dodie Novak, our Lifestyle Director, are pung the 昀nishing touches on the brochure designed for Tudor Oaks employees who wish to apply for a grant to pursue an opportunity to improve their job -related skills. EGG commi琀ee members will soon be mee琀ng with the Tudor Oaks leadership team to present the commi琀ee’s purpose, outline the gi昀s and grants program, answer ques琀ons, and seek input from department heads.

Now that the council’s employee Christmas Fund Drive has ended, we once again welcome resident dona琀ons. The dona琀on box is back in the dini ng room lounge for cash and check dona琀ons. Since ABHM prefers that all dona琀ons to the EGG Fund go only through the resident council of Tudor Oaks (RCTO), checks should be made out to the RCTO, with “EGG Fund” on the memo line. Dona琀ons will, therefore, no longer be tax deduc琀ble.

Thanks to all the resident who have supported the EGG Commi琀ee with dona琀ons and words of support. We will keep you posted on our ac琀vi琀es and progress in shaping this new council venture.

Beau琀ful Old People

A reporter was interviewing a 104-year-young woman. “And what do you think is the best thing about 104?” the journalist asked.

“No peer pressure,” she replied.

When I was in college, I worked in an a昀er-school daycare center with a marvelous woman in her mid-seven琀es. One day she was complaining about her age. “All my friends are old and crippled,” she remarked. “they’re either crippled in their legs or crippled in their minds.”

But even with its aches and pains and a variety of other problems, aging does have an upside. Sister Mary Gemma Brunke has so beau琀fully wri琀en: “It is the old apple trees that are decked with the loveliest blossoms. It is the ancient redwoods that rise to majes琀c heights. It is the old violins that produce the richest tones. It is the aged wine that tastes the sweetest. It is the ancient coins, stamps and furniture that people seek. It is the old friends that are loved the best. Thank God for the blessings of age and the wisdom, pa琀ence and maturity that go with it. Old is wonderful!”

Select Rehabilitation, Tudor Oaks therapy provider, will once again have a featured article in every Acorn. This month the focus will be on the definition of each of the therapy services provided.

Speech Therapy works with residents who have difficulty with swallowing, cognition and communication. A few examples would be: memory, word finding, or verbal expression.

Occupational Therapy uses assessments and interventions to develop, recover or maintain the meaningful activities, or occupations in the individual’s life. A few examples would be: ADLs like feeding and dressing as well as environment modifications.

Physical Therapy develops a treatment plan to improve an individual’s ability to move by reducing or managing pain, restoring muscle strength and movement to help to prevent disability by the use of exercise and physical activity. If you should need any of these therapy services please call 414-525-6517.

I was going to quit all my bad habits for the new year, but then I remembered that nobody likes a quitter.

A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.

An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.

Knock, knock!" "Who's there?" "Razor." "Razor who?" "Razor glass to toast the new year!"

Residents Highlight: Dorothy Henry

Dorothy Henry was born on June 19, the same date as her older brother that had passed away making it a special day for her family. She also has a sister four years older named Rita. At seventeen she was at her favorite place, the Riverview Roller Rink when it was “ladies’ choice.” She wanted to leave but her friend insisted she ask a boy to skate. She picked Dick because he has a nice maroon shirt on. The rest is history as they spent many more dates at the skating rink and were married about a year later.

Dorothy and Dick had two children, a son, James (Jim) born on Father’s Day and her parents’ anniversary and a daughter, Barbara, within the first two years of marriage. Dorothy needed adult interaction, so she got a part time job in the evenings at Schuster’s Department Store. A few years later she wanted one more child and Jean came along. Today Jim lives with his family in Florida, Barbara in Illinois and Jean is right here working as a CNA at Tudor Oaks on the third shift. She has six grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Dorothy later got a job at the Wisconsin Gas Company and loved it. She started with customer service and the was trained and became an engineer working with maps for 12 years.

Dick worked for Allen Bradly and was transferred to El Paso, TX, so the family moved. She worked part time in another department store for a while to keep busy. Dick passed in 1981. She then met Noah who was also a widower. They were married in 1986. The couple moved to Wisconsin so if anything happened to Noah, Dorothy would be near family.

Dorothy traveled a bit. She made solo a trip to Germany when her son was stationed there. The highlight of the trip was a visit to The Berghof, which was Adolf Hitler's vacation home in the Obersalzberg of the Bavarian Alps near Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, Germany. Dorothy also took a solo cruise to the Panama Canal. Going through the locks was a marvelous adventure.

Dorothy used to sew a lot including all her children’s clothes when they were little. She even sewed bridesmaids’ dresses. She also enjoyed baking cookies especially at Christmas time. Her eyes are not as good as they use too so she has not done these in a while.

Dorothy was a wonderful neighbor doing a good deed when she brought the neighbors trash cans up after garbage pickup. As she crossed the lawn, the can tipped over and Dorothy went with it, breaking her shoulder. This is how she ended up in the Frances Health Center here at Tudor Oaks. That was about a year and a half ago. She currently resides in Windsor Manor assisted living and enjoys all the activities Tudor Oaks has to offer. Her favorite is trivia.

Dorothy enjoys watching TV especially Hallmark, Lifetime, Jeopardy, History Channel, and Classic Movies. Some of Dorothy’s favorites include the color yellow, the movie “GREASE,” the song “Whispering Hope,” and Neapolitan ice cream!

Introducing “Tudor Notes”

We had a suggestion that we add a section to the Acorn to allow residents to have a forum to share information, offer gratitude, offer an opinion, etc. It will be called “Tudor Notes.” We would ask that the written piece be less than 150 words and that the Acorn staff does have the right to edit if necessary—they will reach out to the writer before editing. If possible, please send in PDF format to mhyde@abhomes.org. Submissions are due on the 15th of each month for the following month’s edition and can be given to a Lifestyle staff member or in the Poplar Lifestyle Room on top of the filing cabinet is a box (labeled Acorn) to place article.

Endangered Species

It was a day in November my husband Ralph saw an ad in the Milwaukee Journal for the sale of Owen Gromme Prints. The Endangered Species was a favorite of his. He said that they would look great in his new oce. I ordered the prints as a Christmas gi昀. The day a昀er Thanksgiving, Ralph had a massive coronary. He died on December 5th. He never received the gi昀. The prints were hung in the company’s oce and remained there un琀l this past Thanksgiving. I decided that this art work should be seen and appreciated by others. Our son brought the prints to me. Chuck Lamson and I chose the wall near the front entrance to display them. These lovely birds have completed their long migra琀on and landed at Tudor Oaks.

Thank you for sharing these beau琀ful prints!!!
